• Good resources for learning modern OpenGL (3.0 or later)?

  I stumble upon the search of a good resource to start with OpenGL (3.0 or later) . Well, I found a lot of books but none of them can be considered a good resource! Here two examples: OpenGL Programming Guide (7th edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321552628/khongrou-20 This is FULL of deprecated material! Almost every chapters begin with a note about that. OpenGL Superbible (5th Edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321712617/khongrou-20 This book uses a library created by the author to explain the main arguments, hiding what you want to learn! I don't want to learn how to use your library! I want to learn OpenGL! I hope that you understand this is not the same question like "hey I'm not able to use Google... tell me how to learn OpenGL". I've just finished a full and deep search but I can't find a good and complete resource to learn the "new" OpenGL avoiding deprecated topics. Can someone heading me in the right direction? I know C++ and I have 10 years of experience in development... where I can find a good resource?! I want to spend time on it and I want to learn deeply. (please feel free to edit my question, my English is terrible!)

• Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

  I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration. • Problems with dual monitor & resolutions, only in 14.04

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 but i am having weird problems with my dual monitors and the resolutions. I also tried Xubuntu 14.04 and was having the same problem. I have one 32 inch LG TV with 1920x1080 and one monitor with 1280x1024 resolution. When i first start my 32 inch gets 1360x768, if i then try to change to 1920x1080, everythings looks fine and the prompt asking me if i want to keep settings comes up and starts the countdown, but after 2 seconds my computer freezes, and after a few more seconds it reboots itself. However, if i disable my smaller monitor first, i can change to 1920x1080 on my 32 inch without problems, but if i then activate the second monitor the same problem happens again. in Xubuntu 14.04 i can change the refresh rate, if i run the 32 inch at 30hz or 50hz everytying works, but i would like to be able to run it at 60hz. I'm currently running Xubuntu 13.10 without this problem. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4850. What is causing this problem, grahpics drivers? Kernel? Xorg? And how do i solve it?

• Data recovery on a Samsung SV1203N HDD

  Let me start by saying that I am a beginner in Ubuntu, but pretty knowledgeable with Windows. I am having a strange problem trying to recover data from a Samsung SV1203N HDD (120 GiB). I have tried numerous things in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (on a flash drive, an external HDD and a Live CD). This drive has some very important data on it and I am praying some of you Ubuntu geeks can help me get it back. Here's my problem. The HDD is clicking while I am booting, but it stops when I get into Ubuntu or Windows. It refuses to be detected in the bios, so I cant perform any tests on it. I have tried numerous things in both Windows (repair CD, Jumpers, etc.) and Ubuntu (Boot-Fix, GParted, Testdisk, Photorec, forcing a mount, etc.). But it all seems to lead me back to the fact that the drive is not being recognized in the BIOS. I've even tried chilling the drive in the fridge, which worked well for another drive I work on, and I recovered all of the data in Ubuntu flawlessly. I am assuming that since the drive stops clicking when I get into the OS' that there is hope for recovery. I am going to try an IDE/SATA to USB cable, and replacing the Logic Board, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities before I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated Bye

• Why won't Webmaster Tools let me set a preferred domain? (says to verify, but it should already be)

  I've got a domain that I apparently forgot to set a preferred domain for, so I just tried to do it. Webmaster Tools instead popped up a little box: Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://www.example.com/. Please verify http://www.example.com/. I'm running into some problems following these instructions: As far as I can tell I already did verify sometime in the past. There's a TXT DNS record with the gibberish Google tells you to set for it that I couldn't have come up with myself. …and nothing is telling me this information is bad. So let's assume the site is somehow not actually verified. All the various methods' instructions start with "click the Manage Site button next to the site you want, and then click Verify this site." That button doesn't even exist on my screens. (It presumably goes away when you successfully verify?) Those instructions were all updated pretty recently, and the DNS one in particular just a couple weeks ago so it seems a bit unlikely they're inaccurate. I am not using Apps, and won't be, so can't try out the verification through there. Note that I also have another domain that I have not done any verification for which is showing the same behavior(no such button, being told to verify when it seems impossible etc.) so something appears to just be broken. I already have a no-www process in place server-side, so we can skip that. I'm just trying to get the box checked off in GWT. If I don't get any resolution, I'll eventually scrap the TXT record and see if the site gets un-verified(or whatever since it thinks it isn't), and see if I can just restart the process. It's not urgent so I'm just trying to figure out if I've gone blind to something or what. Did the button move?

• Working for a company vs starting my own? [closed]

  I need some advice, I am considering going to grad school for CS. I have a few big projects I came up with on my own that I am extremely motivated to work on and complete and try to turn it into a career. I am currently completing an internship working for a big company, decent pay, 9-5 hours in an office. I feel like working for the same company many people would enjoy and like, is extremely boring in my opinion and procedural at times and kills my motivation. As a result, I am kind of unsure if I should continue to get my CS M.S. degree and start working for a big company? What I would enjoy doing most is working for myself and developing my own project, but I am not sure if I will be able to finanically support myself doing that and I do not want to miss out on a big opportuinities/ job offers to work for a company. With that being said, I will never know if my project will ever succeed if I don't give it %110 of my time and dedication, so if I decide to go that route and work on my own project, I will have to set everything else aside, If anyone could give me any advice on what they think about my situation?

• To program in free time as a programmer, is to show that programming is passion. If not, is the programmer good? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer? A lot of blogs and advice on the web seem to suggest that in order to become a great developer, doing just your day job is not enough. For example, you should contribute to open source projects in your spare time, write smartphone apps, etc. In fact a lot of this advice seems to suggest that if you don't love programming enough to do it all day long then you're probably in the wrong career. That doesn't ring true with me. I enjoy my work, but when I come home from the office I'm not in the mood to jump straight back onto the computer and start coding away until bedtime. I only have a certain number of hours free time each day, and I'd rather spend them on other hobbies, seeing friends or going outside than in front of the computer. I do get a kick out of programming, and do hack around outside of work occasionally. I'm committed to my personal development and spend time reading tech blogs and books as a way to keep learning and becoming better. But that doesn't extend so far as to my wanting to use all my spare time for coding. Does this mean I'm not a 'true' software developer at heart? Is it possible to become a good software developer without doing extra outside your job? I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

• Crackling sound from right laptop speaker

  This problem lasts for several months already (first on Ubuntu 13.10, not on 12.04. I get very loud cracking/popping sound from my right Asus K56C's speaker, I searched everything but could not get rid of it. Several facts: There is no problem on Windows 8. It has nothing to do with applications running because it appears even before login screen of Ubuntu. Also same problem if I boot from Live USB. Muting sound will remove noise, but lowering volume has no effect. Inserting any headphones, removes the noise. If I disconnect power cable while there is noise, noise will always disappear, but only if there is no music playing. If I start playing music, noise again appear even with power cable disconnected. Sometimes that noise disappears for 1-4 weeks, and then again appears for no reason and lasts from several days to weeks. That noise is always the same, and I tried adding tsched=0 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. Also tried this PositionReporting fix, with no effect. I also tried disconnecting all the cables and removing all electronic devices around laptop, but it has no effect. I also tried removing Pulse Audio, didn't change anything. Would be great if someone has some real solution for this problem.

• How do I develop database-utilizing application in an agile/test-driven-development way?

  I want to add databases (traditional client/server RDBMS's like Mysql/Postgresql as opposed to NoSQL, or embedded databases) to my toolbox as a developer. I've been using SQLite for simpler projects with only 1 client, but now I want to do more complicated things (ie, db-backed web development). I usually like following agile and/or test-driven-development principles. I generally code in Perl or Python. Questions: How do I test my code such that each run of the test suite starts with a 'pristine' state? Do I run a separate instance of the database server every test? Do I use a temporary database? How do I design my tables/schema so that it is flexible with respect to changing requirements? Do I start with an ORM for my language? Or do I stick to manually coding SQL? One thing I don't find appealing is having to change more than one thing (say, the CREATE TABLE statement and associated crud statements) for one change, b/c that's error prone. On the other hand, I expect ORM's to be a low slower and harder to debug than raw SQL. What is the general strategy for migrating data between one version of the program and a newer one? Do I carefully write ALTER TABLE statements between each version, or do I dump the data and import fresh in the new version?

• How to manage a lot of Action Listeners for multiple buttons

  I have this Tic Tac Toe game and I thought of this really cool way to draw out the grid of 9 little boxes. I was thinking of putting buttons in each of those boxes. How should I give each button (9 buttons in total) an ActionListener that draws either an X or O? Should they each have their own, or should I do some sort of code that detects turns in this? Could I even do a JButton Array and do some for loops to put 9 buttons. So many possibilities, but which one is the most proper?   Solution: To move a unit forward: forward = Quaternion(0,0,0,1) rotation.normalize() # ocassionally ... pos += ((rotation * forward) * rotation.conjugated()).xyz().normalized() * speed I think the trouble stemmed from how the Euclid math library was doing Quaternion*Vector3 multiplication, although I can't see it. I have a vec3 position, a quaternion for rotation and a speed. I compute the player position like this: rot *= Quaternion().rotate_euler(0.,roll_speed,pitch_speed) rot.normalize() pos += rot.conjugated() * Vector3(0.,0.,-speed) However, printing the pos to console, I can see that I only ever seem to travel on the x-axis. When I draw the scene using the rot quaternion to rotate my camera, it shows a proper orientation. What am I doing wrong? Here's an example: You start off with rotation being an identity quaternion: w=1,x=0,y=0,z=0 You move forward; the code correctly decrements the Z You then pitch right over to face the other way; if you spin only 175deg it'll go in right direction; you have to spin past 180deg. It doesn't matter which direction you spin in, up or down, though Your quaternion can then be something like: w=0.1,x=0.1,y=0,z=0 And moving forward, you actually move backward?! (I am using the euclid Python module, but its the same as every other conjulate) The code can be tried online at http://williame.github.com/ludum_dare_24_evolution/ The only key that adjusts the speed is W and S. The arrow keys only adjust the pitch/roll. At first you can fly ok, but after a bit of weaving around you end up getting sucked towards one of the sides. • Should I Open Source? [closed]

  My company recently created a full javascript, html & css Virtual Tour. Since it is html based there is no real way of securing our information/code so selling it could be flimsy. We are an extremely small company, barely on the map so I was thinking that by making this an open source project it could give us a chance to jump start our SEO by page views alone, especially if we provide documentation. Not to mention hopefully bring a community following on our blog. On the other hand though could this possibly hurt our sales as a web development company? If we are handing out this cool "plugin" we made what keeps people from making it commercial somehow? So I'm trying to weigh the options on whether I should make this Open Source or not and the pros / cons of each especially for a small business. What do you guys think about making things Open Source? How do I know if this product is the right thing to make Open Source? What are some pros and cons to going Open Source?

• Reliance on the compiler

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being expert. For some time I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC I typed in long listings before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learnt to write a small bit and then test it. These days I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this ? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

• UCS Documentation: Home1 or Home2? You Decide.

  How you go about finding information can be a very personal affair. We each have our own style of locating content, we each have our particular bent. But when it comes to getting started finding technical information, sometimes the simplest ways are best, especially if you are relatively new to a product or technology, and you just need to get going quickly with that Installation Guide or those Release Notes. With that in mind, I recently created an alternative home page for the Unified Communications Suite documentation. You can now have your Home2, in addition to the original, more wiki-fied Home1. I would recommend Home2 for those who are used to, and are more comfortable with, the spreadsheet-like view of manuals: here you'll find those familiar titles and the option to either view on the wiki or download the equivalent PDF file. Once you get familiar with what guides are available for the UCS component products, then move on to the Home1 layout, and start using some of the more advanced techniques for finding content in a wiki. Either way, you should be able to locate the "thing" you are looking for.

• Why does my flash video get stuck? (not lag?)

  After moving to Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition, I've noticed a strange problem that manifests itself most obviously with streaming videos like youtube and hulu. The video will load and begin playing fine and eventually stop, as though it is buffering. However, it usually happens between 40 and 60 seconds into the clip. The loading indication however shows that it actually isn't buffering anymore of the data, and will just sit there. If I force the clip forward (e.g. click to start the movie somewhere ahead of the stall point) the clip will usually reload quickly and begin playing as expected. Because of the quick load times, and the consistent stop of video, I don't think the problem is related to hardware performance or network throughput. Also, I have none of these problems in 10.04. Rebooting into 10.04 makes the problem disappear. However, one more clue, I also have noticed a higher occurrence of web pages that simply "stop loading" - say, 1/10 clicks while browsing I have to hit "reload" to get the page to load because the page timed out part of the way through. This seems strangely related to the video problem, though is a lot less infuriating. Help! Where do I begin to look with a problem like this?

• Redesigning my website has destroyed my SEO

  Unfortunately i read an article on how to avoid destroying your websites SEO from a redesign article AFTER its was too late! Here is the article (http://www.searchenginejournal.com/how-to-avoid-seo-disaster-during-a-website-redesign/42824/) On 20 November 12 completely redesigned our www.retromodern.com.au . We get ALL our customers from our website as we do not have a shop. Since that dreaded day a month ago the phone pretty much stopped, basically no emails, Google rankings down and Google analytics have halved by 50%. Yesterday i did some research into as as i had no idea that a re-design of a website could have such a damaging effect - yes i am a novice and use a WYSIWYG type web builder. There are lots of info on how to AVOID this from happening BUT what do i do as i have already made the mistake? Yesterday i reloaded my OLD site with my new pages in the background hoping this would be a start. I really have no idea of how to get out of this mess. Please please help. Thanks in Advance. • Can't boot to Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.10

  Here's what happened: I have 2 HDDs. 1st HDD is partitioned like this: C - Windows 7 D* - Empty drive where I installed Ubuntu E - Personal Files F - Personal Files 2nd HDD is partitioned like this: G - Personal Files *the D partition is originally part of the C partition. I resized it (using Easus Partition Master in Windows) and defragged it prior to installing Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu by booting to the Ubuntu Secure Remix CD, and chose the D partition to install Ubuntu. I did not create a swap drive, and I mounted the / to the D partition. I didnt know where to mount the others, so I just thought by mounting the / to D, it would be okay. After the long installation, upon rebooting, I can't access Windows AND Ubuntu. I get an infinite bootloop and eventually the choices to boot to Safe Modes, Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows normally. After failing in all of them, I placed the CD back and ran the Boot Repair. I chose the MBR 1st, it didn't work. I then chose the GRUB 2nd and now I was able to boot to the Ubuntu I installed, but not to my Windows 7! I'm using my newly installed Ubuntu while writing this. I hope you can help me. • Hosting and scaling a Facebook application in the cloud? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • How do I get 12.04 to recognize swap partition so that I can hibernate?

  I justed installed 12.04 and used gparted to erase and enlarge my swap partition. When I rebooted, gparted said that the file partition for the swap was unknown. Gparted doesn't let me change the file partition to "linux-swap". It does let me change it to NTFS, but when I reboot, it goes back to "unknown". Thanks in advance for your help. • Ubuntu 12.10 and nVidia drivers don't like each other?

  I decided to upgrade both my computers from Precise to Quantal. What a mistake that was. My laptop has a nVidia GT 330M card, while the desktop has an nVidia 9600 GT. In both cases everything goes great as long as I use the Nouveau driver (ugh!). Can't really play games (Amnesia... and hoping for Steam Beta participation...), even though it's OK for work. Now, ever since 9.04 or so, I just installed nvidia-current and all just worked. Since 12.10, after installing nVidia drivers, Unity won't start at all (hangs with only the wallpaper displayed, no cursor or widgets), Gnome Shell is permanently in fallback mode. Now, I have tried on both computers, with multiple clean installs on Ubuntu (two separate downloads, just in case), one from Ubuntu Gnome Remix. And additionally, Fedora 17, which seems to suffer from the same issue. Tried all nVidia driver suggestions available in Software Sources, and even compiled the drivers myself. I tried several versions of the driver to exclude an issue with the newest one. In my frustration, I have switched to Windows (which, ironically, "just works" with my hardware), but still hold a twin OS configuration on the desktop and would like to use Ubuntu again. So, can anyone point me to where the issue might lie?

• dist-upgrade broke my insatll HELP

  so I ran apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade failed and I lost the gui, I have an encrypted /home drive. When I run apt-get * (any command) I have all kinds of errors mostly missing depends and thats because apparently my network stack is gone. I have no NIC if I run ifconfig. It doesn't even show up with lspci If I were to do a "clean" install of 10.04 LTS which is what I had on my on my build, will I lose all my data? BTW I was just using Ubuntu's default encryption to manage the encryption using my PSWD as the key so if I were to use the same user name and PSWD would my data be accessible? I can see my data from command line, when or if Xorg does start it just loads a basic window with nothing but a black X in the middle of the screen which I can only assume is my mouse cursor but it doesn't move! Reddit /r/linux had some ideas none of which worked was, no help. And apparently /r/ubuntu is full of jerks because all they did was ridicule me. If I can get my install back I probably will be switching back to either Slackware or Gentoo. The Ubuntu forums were of no help they had the same suggestion as /r/linux. I am about to just run my back up script to my back up drives and nuke everything else but I'd rather not.
