• Connecting To SQL Database In C#

  Hey everyone, I'm pretty familiar with SQL syntax (via MySQL) and am just getting my feet wet with C# and SQL server. I currently have a .sdf database on my C:\ drive and want to connect to it in C#. I added the database as a data source and now need help figuring out how to get data from the database in my C# application. I just want to be able to set an object to the data in my SQL database so I can manipulate it using C#. Thanks in advance for replies.

  I'm doing an insert query where most of many columns would need to be updated to the new values if a unique key already existed.   I have a program which needs to upgrade any Access (Jet) database it opens to JET Version4.x if it isn't already that version. (This enables use of SQL-92 syntax features) Upgrading is (relatively) easy. A call to the JRO.JetEngine object's CompactDatabase method (as described here) should do the trick, but before I do this I need to determine whether an upgrade is required. How do I determine the Jet OLEDB:Engine Type of an existing database? Can this be determined from an open OleDBConnection? Note: I'm talking about database versions, not Jet library versions. C# or .Net solution greatly appreciated.

• Preventing focus on next form element after showing alert using JQuery

  I have some text inputs which I'm validating when a user tabs to the next one. I would like the focus to stay on a problematic input after showing an alert. I can't seem to nail down the correct syntax to have JQuery do this. Instead the following code shows the alert then focuses on the next text input.   I've found this snippet on Ajaxian, but I can't seem to use the cursor.y (or cursor.x) as a variable and when the function is called as such it does not seem to work. • Python del() built-in can't be used in assignment?

  I noticed a problem when I was trying to use del in a lambda to thin out a list of threads to just those running: map(lambda x: del(x) if not x.isAlive() else x, self.threads) Ignore for a second that this doesn't do anything, I'm just fooling around with map, reduce, and lambda. This fails with a syntax error at del(x). With some messing around, I think the problem is del() doesn't return a value. For example, this fails with the same error: b = 5 x = del(b) This doesn't, however: def rmThis(x): del(x) Which means I'm using this workaround: map(lambda x: rmThis(x) if not x.isAlive() else x, self.threads) So is the limitation just because del() doesn't return a value? Why not? I'm using python 2.6.2

Here's what I've tried: <import> <fileset dir="${basedir}" includes="*-graph.xml" /> </import> However, I just get the error message import requires file attribute or at least one nested resource The documentation for import (and include) both say that you can use a nested resource collection, and the documentation for resource collections says <fileset> is a resource collection.   I have multiple client databases that I need to hit on the fly and I am having trouble getting the code I have to work. At first I was just storing a connection string in a clinet object in the db, pulling it out based on logged-in user, and passing it to linq data context constructor. This works fine in my development enviorment but is failing on the Winhost server I am using. It is running SQL 2008. I am getting a "The current configuration system does not support user scoped settings." error. Any help or guidance on this issue is greatly appreciated. Greg

  I have a medium sized WinForm App (1 Form that hosts 40 user controls) that we use in house. I want to migrate over to WPF but I cannot do a Mass ReRelease. My idea was, for now, to recreate the App 1 User Control at a time in WPF and have that hosted in the existing WinForm App. I would make them look nearly identical, at this point, so there would be no need for mass retraining. My question is more to the point of, has any one else tried this and how does the data portion work. I have recreated one of the WinForms User Controls as a WPF user Control. Do I need to publish that as a User Control Library? How, then, would I access the DAL for that UC? I use a Linq to Sql data layer.

• How to name an event handler of a private variable in Vb.Net following FxCop rules and Vb.Net standa

  Hello, On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>. As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand. On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant. At the end, when I create event handlers for events raised by private variables I end with Subs like m_myVariable_MyEvent. Code Analysis (Fx Cop) is complainig about this way of naming because the method does not start with uppercase and because the _, so the question is: What naming standards do you follow when creating event handlers by hand that follow the Fxcop rules if any? • Using SortableRows and know when rows have been moved

  I want to take advantage of the sortableRows property of the jqGrid. How do I detect when a row has been moved. I have studied the documentation and looked for examples but haven't found much. I do believe it is something like jQuery("#grid").sortableRows({connectWith:'#gird', ondrop: function(){ alert("row moved") }}); but that does not work. I can move the rows, but don't seemed to have trapped the event. Is there something wrong with my syntax or my approach in general. Basically, I need to know that the rows have been rearranged so I can be sure they get saved with their new order. Thanks

  Hi, I know theres hundred of questions and answers out there, but cant find one to specifically answer this. I need a web editor that will let me choose a dark themed editor. I understand gvim is one, but im not totally ready to let go of my mouse. I would like something like sublime text editor for windows, but open to other suggestions. The less bloat the best. I dont need a full IDE like eclipse, but willing to compromise, as long as the themes can easily be added. I've tried bluefish, kompozer and not happy with them. Just need a basic text editor that will highlight php syntax on a dark background.

  I'm developing a site that will display confidential readonly information, with data fetched from a WCF service. My question: What is the best approach to user management across different information pages. The service returns a collection with customer info after a secure login. My idea is to have a Customer object class that is stored in session. Is it possible to use things like HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated followed by HttpContext.Current.Session["UserId"] without using a database with role-based security? Would I be better off with a combination of local database, Linq to SQL or datasets rather than using just class objects for data fetched from service? thanks, nakori

  This is probably a really dumb question with a simple answer but... I am working on a project where I need to use AJAX to send/receive information. I am using Ruby on Rails (which I am pretty new to), but rather than using the helper methods or the built in functionality in the 'defaults' Javascript file, I need to do this manually in my own Javascript. I believe that ultimately I will want to send a request with a JSON object, then have the controller return another JSON object containing the requested information. The problem is that I cannot seem to find the syntax for sending something to a specific controller method, with parameters, directly from Javascript - everything I Google ends up being tutorials for using the Rails AJAX helper methods.

  I have a wrapper class for the Bitmap .NET class called BitmapZone. Assuming we have a WIDTH x HEIGHT bitmap picture, this wrapper class should serve the purpose of allowing me to send to other methods/classes itself instead of the original bitmap. I can then better control what the user is or not allowed to do with the picture (and I don't have to copy the bitmap lots of times to send for each method/class). My question is: knowing that all BitmapZone's are created from a Bitmap, what do you find preferrable? Constructor syntax: something like BitmapZone bitmapZone = new BitmapZone(originalBitmap, x, y, width, height); Factory Method Pattern: BitmapZone bitmapZone = BitmapZone.From(originalBitmap, x , y, width, height); Factory Method Pattern: BitmapZone bitmapZone = BitmapZone.FromBitmap(originalBitmap, x, y, width, height); Other? I do not really know if this is scientifically proven, but I've read in a book (It was a relatively modern AI book by Peter Norvig) that secon-order logical programming could be more expressive than existing first-order languages. The question is: Is it statistically/symbolically proven that higher-order predicate logics exceed first-order predicates in their expressive power? Or they just bring the modularity/convenience/maintainability to your knowledge bases? Additionally: If there is some kind of firm direction in which I could go seeking more expressive power than I have (I mean exactly the descriptive potential of the symbols I write in given semantics/syntax) - then I would be glad to hear just almost everything :) Thank you.

• Core Data table record count

  I have an entity called Person and it has a relationship called participatingGames, to another entity called GameParticipant. I (apparently) can retrieve the number of matches in the GameParticipant entity using this simple code in the Person object I created from the entity in the model: [self.participatingGames count]; However, I'd just like to retrieve the number of Person records and one might guess the syntax for this is just as simple. I have lots of books including those by Jeff LaMarche, but those sources and what I find around here make me wonder if I need to set up a fetchedResultsController just to know the count of some entity. My background is in SQL, so of course it seems odd that what would take 15 seconds to code in any other environment seems like such a well-guarded secret in Core Data. I'm using iPhone SDK 3.1.4 under OSX 10.5.8 Suggestions?
