  Hi Guys, I simply want to create a fairly basic REST service, so that I can expose some of the data in my asp.net/SQL server application to the outside works, like this..... http://domain.com/api/offices - would return an xml set of office locations. http://domain.com/api/offices/15 - would return all the details of office 15. It's all fairly standard stuff (including basic authentication) but there seem to be several ways to achieve this using Microsoft technologies and I don't really know where to start. These seem to be the options... 1) WCF 2) ASP.NET MVC 3) ADO.NET Data Services 4) Rest Starter Kit project templates? Which of these is the easiest and most "up-to-date" solution to creating a web service?

Basic course is rather simple, compared to Alternate course, because this is normally given by client. Alternate course is what we, as a programmer or Business Analyst needs to take care of. Java has some built-in mechanism (try-catch) to force us to handle those unexpected behavior. The question is, how to handle them? Any pattern to follow? Any guideline or industry practice for handling alternate course?

  Hi, see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/695752/product-table-many-kinds-of-product-each-product-has-many-parameters for similar topic. My question: i want to design a database, that will be used for a production facility of different types of products where each product has its own (number of) parameters. because i want the serial numbers to be in one tabel for overview purposes i have a problem with these different paraeters . One solution could be AEV, but it has its downsides, certainly because we have +- 5 products with every product +- 20.000 serial numbers (records). it looks a bit overkill to me... I just don't know how one could design a database so that you have an attribute in a mastertable that says: 'hey, you could find details of this record in THAT detail-table". 'in a way that you qould easely query the results) currenty i am using Visual Basic & Acces 2007. but i'm going to Visual Basic & MySQL. thanks for your help. Bob

• Generating PDF's via Delayed Job while maintaing a RESTful pattern.

  Hi, currently I am running a Rails app on Heroku, and everything is working great with exception of generating PDF documents that sometimes contain thousands of records. Heroku has a built-in timeout of 30 seconds, so if the request takes more than 30 seconds, it's abandoned. That's fine, since they offer delayed_job support built-in. However, all of the PDF's i generate follow a typical restful pattern. For instance, a request to "/posts.pdf" generates a pdf (using PRAWN and PRAWNTO) and it's delivered to the browser. So my basic question is, how do I create dynamically generated PDF's with delayed_job while maintaining the basic RESTful patterns Rail's so conveniently provides. Thanks.

• When not to use a Drupal node?

  I've recently created a very simple CRUD table where the user stores some data. For the data, I created a custom node. The functionality works great for creating, editing, and deleting data in the CRUD table using the basic node functionality (I'm actually amazed how fast and easy it was to program the basic functionality with proper access controls using only a tiny bit of code).... Since the data isn't meant to be treated the same way as 'content' such as a blog post (no title, no body, no commments, no revisions, shouldn't show up on ?q=node page, no previews, no teasers, etc)... I find that I'm spending most of my time 'turning off' and modifying the stuff that drupal does automatically for nodes. I know its a matter of taste, but where should one draw the line on what should be treated as a node and what shouldn't? In other words, would it be better to program this stuff from scratch without using nodes?

  One of my colleagues joined our company, which by the way is a internet company, months ago as an on-line marketing specialist. He majored English in his college and has never deeply touched IT before. He says that to be a good on-line marketing specialist he needs to lean some basic IT skills in order to deliver superb work. According to him, things like Search Engine Optimization, monitoring competitors' web sites, design some functionality on web site and so on require IT entree-level knowledge. And he asks me what kind knowledge is helpful for him to do his job. I am stunted by his question. It is easy enough to answer, things like HTML, CSS, even Photo-shop are required in some job descriptions. Also, I believe some basic understanding of dynamic web site, static web site is helpful to him. On the other hand, as a techie I still feel my answer is awkward. What is your opinion on this? Always lot of thanks to you guys on SO.

  I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

• Teaching a mainframe COBOL programmer Java?

  I’m trying to help someone learn Java who’s only programming experience is COBOL on the mainframe. I was wondering if anyone knew any good resources for object oriented concepts. I learned how to program with C++ so just understand the theory behind basic OOP. I’m more concerned about a way to get the basic concepts across, such as encapsulation and inheritance rather then Java syntax. I think it’d be better to teach the concepts of OOP then a language rather then trying to cram both a new language and paradigm in at the same time. Does anyone have any resources or ideas that could help this person learn OOP followed by Java?

  my partner and i are launching a social learning platform - the requirements have been mapped out and are quite basic/intuitive. we are familiar with html/css, and have some very basic understanding of php, but we would love some feedback on whether we should tackle this ourselves or not. we've built websites, but in the past relied mostly on pre-fab code, i.e. wordpress, ning, etc. we've been looking specifically at ruby for developing the network, but i haven't delved into it fully yet. we're looking for some guidance and feedback - e.g. thoughts on ruby on rails? what's the learning curve? are we getting in over our heads? thanks in advance!

• wordpress image showing up multiple times

  I am writing a wordpress theme, and have run into a fairly basic problem. By default, when you inset an image into the post, it displays that image at the size you specify, on both the homepage and the single post. I would like to have different sized images, displaying a thumbnail on the homepage, and a full sized image when you click through to the post. I am using wordpress 2.9's new thumbnail feature, which has created great thumbnails for the homepage. But now, I am stuck with a nice thumbnail next to a large photo (on the index/home page). On the single page, it is displaying correctly with just the large picture. Basically, I need to know how to tell wordpress to only display the large post image on the single page, not on the index. Also: I have used the timthumb script, but I think the answer is far more basic then needing plugins or scripts Thanks!

• why does backbone not send the delete?

  I have a very basic backbone (sample) application which just creates and destroys model items. When the model is created the object is persisted with a POST to the web server, but when the model is destroyed there is no DELETE sent to the server?   I am interested in getting a few Microsoft Certs and I am currently facing the option for .NET Framework app development language. My choices are C++, C#, and Visual Basic. I have some experience with Java and Visual Basic .NET but I honestly would like to know what the best would be for developing stand-alone applications in a workstation (local) environment. This is for my career and honestly, 90% of the developers are all experienced in the above three languages and I wanted to improve my chances of staying employed by learning/certifying myself on my own time.

  I'm trying to select a record with the most effective votes. Each record has an id, the number of upvotes (int) and the number of downvotes (int) in a MySQL database. I know basic update, select, insert queries but I'm unsure of how to form a query that looks something like: SELECT * FROM topics WHERE MAX(topic.upvotes - topic.downvotes). Please excuse my made up SQL. The tutorials on SQL I find on the internet cover very basic stuff. Does anyone recommend a good book on this subject?

  How are applications providing import / export (or backups) of data in SaaS based multi-tenancy applications, particularly single database designs? Imports: Keeping things simple I think basic imports are useful, ie CSV to a spec (or a way of providing a mapping between CSV columns and fields in the database. Exports: In single database designs I have seen XML exports and HTML (basic sitse generated) exports of data? I would assume that XML is a better option? How does one cater for relational data? Would you reference various things within XML and provide documentation of the relationships or let users figurethis out? Are vendors providing an export/backup that can be imported back in/restored? Also, Assembly has limited instruction set like mov etc. So how can anybody create OS in assembly? and even C has limited functionality. But it is said to be the mother of all languages. • Custom annotations to configure tests

  First of al let me start off by saying I think custom annotations can be used for this but i'm not totally sure. I would like to have a set of annotations that I can decorate some test classes with. The annotations would allow me to configure the test for different environments. Example: public class Atest extends BaseTest{ private String env; @Login(environment=env) public void testLogin(){ //do something } @SignUp(environment=env) public void testSignUp(){ //do something } } The idea here would be that the login annotation would then be used to lookup the username and password to be used in the testLogin method for testing a login process for a particular environment. So my question(s) is this possible to do with annotations? If so I have not been able to find a decent howto online to do something like this. Everything out there seems to be your basic here's how to do your custom annotations and a basic processor but I haven't found anything for a situation like this. Ideas?

  Every app I make starts out with a number of common base classes, interfaces, utility classes and a basic package structure that has been working for me. Is there a way for me to set up a project template in Eclipse that will give me all of the basic Android project stuff PLUS a bunch of custom packages, classes and interfaces? I guess I could just put all of this stuff into one or more libraries as opposed to creating a whole project template, so if you have a preferred approach or information/links/etc on how to do any of the above, please share (I'm relatively inexperienced with Eclipse, so the more detail the better).   Hi, I have a really basic question concerning unix timestamp and mysql date. I'm trying to build a small website where users can register and fill in their birthdate. Problem is that unix starts with Jan 01 1970. Now if i calculate age for users, form dates like date('m.d.Y', $unix_from_db) and so on it will fail with users older that 40 years, right? So what would be the rigth way for doing this. Sorry, for basic question like this, but I'm inexperienced with php and mysql.

  I can find some articles on how to use them but I can't seem to find anywhere peoples impression of them using them in real projects. I have been trying to figure out how to use them and Ive had alot of problems.. Can someone out there who uses these tools on the job give me thier impression? Are there better alternate tools available? Using these really just a waste of time ? With Coded UI Tests I see how they are good for basic javascript checking but its so basic of a example I don't think it is worth it. With web tests I like how they work but when I activate code coverage/ASP.NET profiling it doesnt work half the time.

• Verify p2p node

  Hey guys, I have been working on a p2p namespace for some of my programs. I created a system to encrypt/decrypt the packets send/received with the class. I was using the basic public private key system: 1) encrypt the data with Symmetric encryption 2) encrypt the symmetric key with RSA. Then do the opposite when you decrypted.. I was wondering though, how would you verify if the packet was coming from where it said it was. I was going to use a basic certificate system (where you encrypt with your private RSA key, then they decrypt it with your public key), but I don't know how to do this with C#. I am using the RSACryptoServiceProvider class. Does anyone know how do this? Thanks, Max

• Is there an easy way to concatenate several lines of text into a string without constantly appending

  So I essentially need to do this: String text = "line1\n"; text += "line2\n"; text += "line3\n"; useString( text ); There is more involved, but that's the basic idea. Is there anything out there that might let me do something more along the lines of this though? DesiredStringThinger text = new DesiredStringThinger(); text.append( "line1" ); text.append( "line2" ); text.append( "line3" ); useString( text.toString() ); Obviously, it does not need to work exactly like that, but I think I get the basic point across. There is always the option of writing a loop which processes the text myself, but it would be nice if there is a standard Java class out there that already does something like this rather than me needing to carry a class around between applications just so I can do something so trivial. • Getting started with Rails testing

  I asked a question about different testing frameworks yesterday. This question can be found here. Now that I have a better understanding of the different frameworks, I have a very simple question: With a basic understanding, but very limited experience with writing tests with rails' built in testing framework (basic assertions), would it be okay for me to jump directly to testing with RSpec, Webrat, and Cucamber?
