• My laptop hangs a lot

  My laptop is 1G ram and 120G hard-disk 1.68HZ processor , I've both Ubuntu and Windows7 on my machine For the last few days, my laptop, running Ubuntu 11.10 has been hanging a lot. A lot of the time, the touchpad won't work for unknown reasons, and I have to connect a USB mouse to be able to move the pointer on the screen. When browsing the web, the browser hangs a lot, and I have to restart the laptop to refresh it. I know that there is a hotkey to force Ubuntu to refresh when it hangs, but it doesn't work here.These problems happens only on ubuntu not on windows 7... How do I make Ubuntu light and fast? Help me, please.

• Class as first-class object

  Could a class be a first-class object? If yes, how would the implementation look? I mean, how could syntax for dynamically creating new classes look like? EDIT: I mean what example syntax could look like (I'm sorry, English is not my native language), but still I believe this question makes sense - how you give this functionality while keeping language consistent. For example how you create reference for new type. Do you make reference first-class object too and then use something like this: Reference<newType> r = new Reference<newType>(); r.set(value); Well this could get messy so you may just force user to use Object type references for dynamically created classes, but then you loose type-checking. I think creating concise syntax for this is interesting problem which solving could lead to better language design, maybe language which is metalanguage for itself (I wonder if this is possible).

Into the FAQ on the official site you can also view that, for the future, Oracle plans to fully integrate Virtual Iron technology into Oracle VM products, and any enhancements will be delivered as a part of the combined solution; this is what is going on with Oracle VM 3.x. So, customers started asking us to migrate Virtual Iron guests to Oracle VM. IMPORTANT: This procedure needs a dedicated OVM-Server with no-guests running on top; be careful while execute this procedure on production environments. In these little steps you will find how-to migrate, as fast as possible, your guests between VI ( Virtual Iron ) and Oracle VM; keep in mind that OracleVM has a built-in P2V utility ( Official Documentation )  that you can use to migrate guests between VI and Oracle VM. • Ease Rotate RigidBody2D toward arbitrary angle

  I'm trying to make a rigidbody2D circle return to an orientation after a collision. But there is a weird behavior I do not expect - it always orients to the same direction. This is what I call in FixedUpdate(): rotationdifference = -halfPI + rigidbody2D.rotation; rigidbody2D.AddTorque (rotationdifference * ease); I would expect this would rotate 90 degrees (1/2 Pi Radians) off of the neutral axis. But it does not. In fact it performs exactly the same as: rotationdifference = rigidbody2D.rotation; rigidbody2D.AddTorque (rotationdifference * ease); What is going on? How would I be able to set an angle I want it to ease towards, and then have it ease towards it when its not colliding with some other force?

• How to replace GRUB with BURG without overwriting MBR?

  I'd like to install BURG but I don't want it to overwrite my MBR. That's because I've got two bootloaders in my system : Default Windows 7 in MBR Grub in /dev/sda2 With the first power button, it will boot into Windows and with the second button it boots from /dev/sda2, loading Grub and then Kubuntu. Now I want to replace GRUB with BURG. I've installed Burg with burg-install /dev/sda2 --force because I don't want my MBR to be overwritten (pressing the first power button MUST load Windows and avoid showing any sign of Linux). Setup was completed without errors, If I open burg-manager it loads my settings, allowing me to change them and to test everything with burg-emu, so I've changed my settings but the second power button still loads GRUB (Even a different version from the default Kubuntu one). How can I replace GRUB that's on /dev/sda2 with BURG and without overwriting MBR?

• How should a site respond to automated login attempts with phony usernames?

  For the last couple weeks I've been seeing a consistent stream of 15-30 invalid login attempts per hours on my site. Many of them are non-sensical usernames that nobody would ever register for real, and often contain typical spam-related keywords. They all come from different IP addresses so I can't just IP block/throttle the requests. I'm not worried about unauthorized access to real accounts since they aren't using real usernames. And if it were a member of my site trying to brute force logins, they could easily scrape the valid usernames from the site, so I'm not worried about that kind of malicious behavior either. But what's the point of this type of activity? What would whichever bot operator is doing this have to gain by attempting all these logins?

• is there a bug with restart in edubuntu 12.04

  After a clean install of edubuntu 12.04 on an Acer AO531-h netbook, restart doesn't work. The process starts normally but just before it shuts down the netbook freezes and I have to force shut down. The command "sudo reboot" has the same problem. I have no issues with shut down, only with restart. I'm absolute beginner. Netbook specs: Acer, intel atom CPU N270 @1.60GHz, 1.05 GHz 0.98GB RAM Dual booting with windows xp. No problems with windows.

• Making an efficient collision detection system

  I'm very new to game development (just started 3 months ago) and I'm learning through creating a game engine. It's located here. In terms of collision, I know only brute-force detection, in which case, the game slows down if there are a number of objects. So my question is How should I program the collisions? I want them to happen automatically for every object and call the object's collision(GObject other) method on each collision. Are there any new algorithms which can make this fast? If so, can anybody shed some light on this topic?

• .NET Reflector Open Source Alternative

  When I found out yesterday that one of my top 5 development tools .NET Reflector will no longer be free at the end of February, I thought I'd see if work had started on a good open source alternative...and guess what...work on ILSpy is already well underway!! There seems to be a difference of opinion on what Red Gate said when they purchased .NET Reflector from Lutz Roeder in 2008. They say that they would try to keep it free, where as others think they promised to keep it free. Either way at the time I thought it was a smart purchase by Red Gate as it would raise their profile overnight within the .Net community. But not only are they going to charge $35 for v7 (which is up to them), they have also time-bombed v6 to force users to pay. This I think will lower their profile overnight within the .Net community!! Maybe they are been slightly naive in thinking the community wouldn't just write an alternative?  #

• URL Rewrite http to https EXCEPT files in a specific subfolder

  I am trying to force all traffic on my web site to use HTTPS, using the URL Rewrite 2.0 module added to IIS 7.5. I got that working and now have a need to exclude a couple of pages from using SSL. So I need a rule to rewrite all URL except those referencing this folder to HTTPS. I've been banging my head against the wall on this and am hoping someone can help. I tried creating a rule to match all URL except those in a nossl subfolder as in this example: <rule name="HTTP to HTTPS redirect" enabled="true" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(/nossl/.*)" negate="true" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll" trackAllCaptures="false"> <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="off" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" url="https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}" redirectType="Found" /> </rule> But this doesn't work. • Movement of body after applying weld joint

  I have two rectangular bodies. I've applied Weldjoint successfully on these bodies. I want to move that joined body by applying linear impulse. After weld joint, these two bodies becomes single body right? How do I apply force/impulse on the joined body? I am using Box2D with LibGDX. I've tried this: polygon1.applyLinearImpulse(new Vector2(-5, 0), polygon1.getWorldCenter(), true); I thought that if I move polygon1 then polygon2 will also move due to my weld joint but it is not working properly. Why don't they move together after being welded?

• Can only connect to file server on second attempt

  I have a FreeNas file server on my local network and I usually connect to it from Windows and Ubuntu computers. Ever since I have upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 Ubuntu will only connect after a second attempt. By which I mean, I will browse to it via the file manager and once I click on the link in "Bookmarks" it complains that it could not connect. If I then try again it connects successfully and will keep up it's connection until the laptop is suspended or looses connection to the LAN for whatever reason. This isn't much of a problem as I don't mind having to click twice but my real problem is that this means that my scheduled backup will complain that it cannot connect to the storage device if it has not already been accessed during the current session. If there is some way to either stop the issue all together or to force the backup tool (default) to immediately have a second attempt at connecting.

• How do you stop yourself from programming?

  Lately I've started earning enough off my software to not have to do consulting to support myself. So I work full time designing and writing my own software products. The problem is that there are no boundaries between my work and my life any more. When I mostly did consulting, I was weary enough of work at the end of the workday to go home and do other things. But now, I sit down to program in the morning, and before I know it it's 11pm and I'm still writing software and not bored or tired at all. I have to force myself to go to sleep. I feel happy and fulfilled, but objectively, I know I need more balance and variety in my life. Any tips or suggestions on how to pull yourself away from the console?

• Thinking differently about BI delivery

  My day job involves implementing Business Intelligence (BI) solutions which, as I have said before, is simply about giving people the information they need to do their jobs. I’m always interested in learning about new ways of achieving that aim and that is my motivation for writing blog entries that are not concerned with SQL or SQL Server per se. Implementing BI systems usually involves hacking together a bunch third party products with some in-house “glue” and delivering information using some shiny, expensive web-based front-end tool; the list of vendors that supply such tools is big and ever-growing. No doubt these tools have their place and of late I have started to wonder whether they can be supplemented with different ways of delivering information. The problem I have with these separate web-based tools is exactly that – they are separate web-based tools. What’s the problem with that you might ask? I’ll explain! They force the information worker to go somewhere unfamiliar in order to get the information they need to do their jobs. Would it not be better if we could deliver information into the tools that those information workers are already using and not force them to go somewhere else? I look at the rise of blogging over recent years and I realise that what made them popular is that people can subscribe to RSS feeds and have information pushed to them in their tool of choice rather than them having to go and find the information for themselves in a tool that has been foisted upon them. Would it not be a good idea to adopt the principle of subscription for the benefit of delivering BI information as well? I think it would and in the rest of this blog entry I’ll outline such a scenario where the power of subscription could be used to enhance the delivery of information to information workers. Typical questions that information workers ask might be: What are my year-on-year sales figures? What was my footfall yesterday? How many widgets have I sold so far today? Each of those questions includes a time element and that shouldn’t surprise us, any BI system that I have worked on includes the dimension of time. Now, what do people use to view and organise their time-oriented information? Its not a trick question, they use a calendar and in the enterprise space more often than not that calendar is managed using Outlook. Given then that information workers are already looking at their calendar in Outlook anyway would it not make sense then to deliver information into that same calendar? Of course it would. Calendars are a great way of visualising information such as sales figures. Observe: Just in this single screenshot I have managed to convey a multitude of information. The information worker can see, at a glance, information about hourly/daily/weekly/monthly sales and, moreover, he/she is viewing that information right inside the tool that they use every day. There is no effort on the part of him/her, the information just appears hour after hour, day after day. Taking the idea further, each one of those calendar items could be a mini-dashboard in its own right. Double-clicking on an item could show a plethora of other information about that time slot such as breaking the sales down per region or year-over-year comparisons. Perhaps the title could employ a sparkline? Loads of possibilities. The point is that calendars are a completely natural way to visualise information; we should make more use of them! The real beauty of delivering information using calendars for us BI developers is that it should be so easy. In the case of Outlook we don’t need to write complicated VBA code that can go and manipulate a person’s calendar, simply publishing data in a format that Outlook can understand is sufficient and happily such formats already exist; iCalendar is the accepted format and the even more flexible xCalendar is hopefully on its way as well.   I’d like to make one last point and this one is with my SQL Server hat on. Reporting Services 2008 R2 introduced the ability to publish data as subscribable Atom feeds so it seems logical that it could also be a vehicle for delivering calendar feeds too. • Manually activate Network Manager Applet

  The issue I've is that when I connect via modem through gnome-ppp the Network Manager Applet don't detect a connection and don't let me use the configured VPNs via its interface. How Can I manually activate the Network Manager Applet? What I need is to enable the Network Manager apple in order to use the "VPN Connection" section of the GUI. When I don't have an ethernet cable connected and I connect through a modem the Network Manager applet doesn't enables itself, it is like if don't recognizes the ppp0 interface. My question is: there is a way to force the Network Manager GUI indicator to make it "alive"/"up"/"enabled" in order to use the "VPN Connections"section? Thanks in advance.

• Projected trajectory of a vehicle?

  In the game I am developing, I have to calculate if my vehicle (1) which in the example is travelling north with a speed V, can reach its target (2). The example depict the problem from atop: There are actually two possible scenarios: V is constant (resulting in trajectory 4, an arc of a circle) or the vehicle has the capacity to accelerate/decelerate (trajectory 3, an arc of a spiral). I would like to know if there is a straightforward way to verify if the vehicle is able to reach its target (as opposed to overshooting it). I'm particularly interested in trajectory #3, as I the only thing I could think of is integrating the position of the vehicle over time. EDIT: of course the vehicle has always the capacity to steer, but the steer radius vary with its speed (think to a maximum lateral g-force). EDIT2: also notice that (as most of the vehicles in real life) there is a minimum steering radius for the in-game ones too).

  Suppose that I have an input stream interface, which defines a method for reading data. I also have a seekable interface which defines a method for seeking. A natural way of defining a input file is then to implement both input stream and seekable. I want to construct a data decoder from the input stream interface so I can read data from a file or from another stream. The problem is that I also want to implement seek functionality to the data decoder, since I want to be able to step individual records not raw bytes. This is not possible if I only provide an input stream, which does not have the bytewise seek method. Should I skip the seekable interface and add the seek method to input stream instead and force all streams to at least leave it as a nop.

• How should I account for the GC when building games with Unity?

  *As far as I know, Unity3D for iOS is based on the Mono runtime and Mono has only generational mark & sweep GC. This GC system can't avoid GC time which stops game system. Instance pooling can reduce this but not completely, because we can't control instantiation happens in the CLR's base class library. Those hidden small and frequent instances will raise un-deterministic GC time eventually. Forcing complete GC periodically will degrade performance greatly (can Mono force complete GC, actually?) So, how can I avoid this GC time when using Unity3D without huge performance degrade?

  I've just installed UBUNTU 12.04 for curiosity purposes. I'm a gamer and I wanted to install Brute force Save data on my comp. So i download it and it open in the Archive manager i go to run the ".exe" but encounter this message Archive: /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe [/home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe or /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe.ZIP, period. • Bluescreen after Ubuntu 12.10 installation, after recommended boot repair "no filesystem found" please help!

  After I tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 into my Windows 7 a black screen came up and nothing happened for over five minutes. So I force shutdown my computer and started again on the linux CD. I partitioned the Linux partitions manually and installed Ubuntu. At the next reboot I got a bluescreen from Windows three secounds after loading. I tried to repair the problem by using boot-repair. Then I got out the url: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1430803 And after the next restart he told me that he didn't found the filesystem. Because he didn't found the filesystem it was unable to repair it with the windows CD. Then I tried to repair it with TestDisk and was able to change the Windows Partition into NTFS, but I was not able to repair the windows 7 boot partition. Now I get the message that No Bootloader is found when I restart. Please help me.

• Using paypal to process credit cards in Sweden through an API [on hold]

  I'm looking for a Paypal API that lets me process credit cards to make payments without being redirected to a paypal site and without enforcing consumers to use their paypal account. And it needs to work in Sweden. The ones I've looked at (dodirectpayment, expresscheckout, paypalpro gateway) and none of them have let me process credit cards in Sweden via an API that doesn't force the user to visit the paypal login site. I have a form on my webpage that the user types their credit card number, ccv2, expiration, name, address, etc. I need an API that works in Sweden that simply processes the request, and it has to be without the step of being redirected into a paypal website. The ones that I have found only worked in a select few countries, is there an international solution? I've already spent over 12 work hours just looking for an API that meets my requirements.

• Should functions of a C library always expect a string's length?

  I'm currently working on a library written in C. Many functions of this library expect a string as char* or const char* in their arguments. I started out with those functions always expecting the string's length as a size_t so that null-termination wasn't required. However, when writing tests, this resulted in frequent use of strlen(), like so: const char* string = "Ugh, strlen is tedious"; libFunction(string, strlen(string)); Trusting the user to pass properly terminated strings would lead to less safe, but more concise and (in my opinion) readable code: libFunction("I hope there's a null-terminator there!"); So, what's the sensible practice here? Make the API more complicated to use, but force the user to think of their input, or document the requirement for a null-terminated string and trust the caller?
