• Partitioning requests in code among several servers

  I have several forum servers (what they are is irrelevant) which stores posts from users and I want to be able to partition requests among these servers. I'm currently leaning towards partitioning them by geographic location. To improve the locality of data, users will be separated into regions e.g. North America, South America and so on. Is there any design pattern on how to implement the function that maps the partioning property to the server, so that this piece of code has high availability and would not become a single point of failure ? f( Region ) -> Server IP

  hi, i just have a few weeks programming with vc# (2008) and i'm trying to build an application (winforms) and i have the following problem... i need my application to work with and without connection to the mssql database, this sounds like piece of cake for our friend DataSet right? i can persist the data as XML or binary until i can reach the database and the DataSet will magically sync; all without bothering the user. The problem is... the few books i have read just mention that logic like a fairy tale but dont give any practical example of how to do it, can you point me to one example/demo/whatever i can read or download of an application with (equal or) similar logic?

  Trying again. On advice, adding the piece of code that I do understand. I am fine with the fact that I have to save 4 bits of information in two lines like so: IniFile.WriteString('TestSection','Name','Country'); IniFile.WriteString('TestSection','City','Street'); My question is more about loading this information back into the form. If in my IniFile I have saved for example the following code [TestSection] John=Uk London=barlystreet Mike=Spain Madrid=eduardostrata Emma=USA New York=1st Avenue Made up information in the IniFile. Added through the code above. Now my question is: How could I load for example, when I type in an edit box Mike, the rest of the belonging information.(Spain, Madrid,eduardostrata).

• Triangular bounding volumes

  I've come up with an alternative for beziers that might be easier to ray-trace, perhaps even though a plain vertex shader. Though there's missing a piece. I need to find the parametric surface equation from the surface normals I have for edge vertices. I also have to know it's peak and valley so I can constraint the depth of my bounding triangle. Image explains the overall idea: I build a bounding-volume from a control triangle. Then apply a function to each parametric coordinate of the triangle (s+t+u=1 where s,t,u = 0) to get the height coordinate for that certain point. Simply put, it produces a procedurally generated height-map for the triangle's surface. I just need to find a function that generates the height-map so I can make it work.

• request payload versus query string parameters

  I am absolutely in the dark when it comes to this request payload that I'm seeing in my Chrome browser. A Query string will have a variable attached like session:2g0SoEE but this payload has just one long string I'm guessing is in base64. I do understand that the request payload can have whatever, but how do I use it? Can I do a post with jquery and send this request payload? For example: $.post(url, {variable: "variable"}, function(data){}); When this posts it will send &variable=variable this will be found as query string parameter in the headers sent in chrome. In this game I'm playing I see another piece of info being sending in the header called a payload request. I'm a confused as to how this is read, used, made, how I can reduplicate this? • How to debug macruby?

  Hi, I've encountered an inconsistent bug with MacRuby and have no idea how to go about debugging this. If anyone could help would be great. I don't know if this is due to my own code or is it a bug in the MacRuby framework. I have a feeling it's my own code, something about over-retaining a piece of memory and hence the garbage collection failed. This is the error from Xcode. Thanks.   I'm having a tough time figuring out how to instantiate a 2D array of pointer objects. Here is how I'm doing it: Pieces* chessBoard[9][9]; When I want to set it to an actual object pointer, I'm doing the following: chessBoard[1][1] = new Rook(p1Rook); Rook is a class that inherits attributes from the Pieces class and p1Rook is a char variable set to 'R'. This class also implements virtual functions (not pure virtual) from Pieces such as move() or getPiece() that are unique to the particular chess piece. However, when I compile my program, I get the following error: ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: expected type-specifier before ‘Rook’ ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: cannot convert ‘int*’ to ‘Pieces*’ in assignment Can someone please explain what I should change to get rid of this rather annoying persistent error? Point (x, y) lies inside of one these pieces. Problem: Write a fast algorithm that will find a point with integer coordinates in the same piece as (x,y) that is closest to the cross point of the two given lines. Note: This is not a homework, this is old Euler-type task that I have absolutely no idea how to approach.

• Access to path denied when saving an image with ASP.NET 4.0 project

  I have an existing application that was written in .NET 3.5. The piece of code in question is using the FileUpload control and its SaveAs method. Its worked perfectly for the past six months, but I've recently upgraded the project to .NET 4.0 and I'm now receiving an "Access to path (...) is denied" every time the method is called. It works fine locally in dev mode but fails on my prod server. I've upgraded the website to run under .NET 4.0 and I've made sure the account (Network Service) it runs under in the app pool has full control. Other than upgrading to .NET 4.0, nothing has changed for the project. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Track unicode words from Twitter using Ruby and the Tweetstream API

  I am trying to track a set of keywords from Twitter by using the Streaming API (can't post the link here because of spam limitations: google twitter streaming API). I am doing this inside Ruby, using the TweetStream gem: http://bit.ly/cODAWI The problem I have is that I want to track keywords that contain some unicode/UTF-8 characters. For instance: require 'rubygems' require 'tweetstream' TweetStream::Client.new("my_user_name", "my_password").track("é") do |s| puts s.text end (you can try it out, provided you installed the tweetstream and json gems) This piece of code does not print anything, while replacing "é" with "e" outputs a bunch of tweets continuously. • Database strucure for versioning and multiple languages

  Hi, I'm wondering how to best solve the issue of content existing in multiple versions and multiple languages. An image of my current structure can be seen here: http://i46.tinypic.com/72fx3k.png Each content can only have one active version in each language, and that's how I'm curious on how to best solve. Right now I have a column of the contentversions table, which means for each change of active version I have to run a update and set active=false on all version and then a update to set active=true for the piece of content in question. Any thoughts? :)

  I have the following piece of Javascript code on my web-page var central_image = document.createElement("img") central_image.setAttribute("src", imgs[curr_image_no - 1]); central_image.setAttribute("name", "jpeg"); document.getElementById("photo").appendChild(central_image); central_image.onload = getDimensions(); //function that alerts image dimensions Now, when the central_image is loaded for the 1st time in Firefox, its height always equals to 0. In IE its dimensions are 28 x 30 pixels. When I reload image, its dimensions are OK in both browsers. I guess the problem is that function getDimensions() starts before image was loaded completely. How to change that?

• Why does the token returned by LogonUser() in Win x64 not belong to LOCAL group?

  Hi, I have a piece of code that calls LogonUser() followed by CreateProcessAsUser(). In Win32, the resulting process belongs to a user (say, TESTDOMAIN\user1) who belongs to the LOCAL group. However, in x64, the process owner does not belong to LOCAL. The owner still belongs to all other groups (Authenticated Users, Everyone, etc.) Does anyone know if this is a documented behavior change? Or am I supposed to put some special flag in x64 when calling LogonUser()? Thanks.

• system() copy fails, while cmd copy works

  In cmd.exe, I can execute the command "copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt" and it worked fine. But in my C program, I ran this piece of code and got the following error: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { system("copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt"); system("pause"); return 0; } Output: The system cannot find the file specified.   Hi, I have html: <div class="field-label"><label>Email: </label></div> <div class="field"><input class="input" ......></div> and piece of css: .field-label { clear:left; float:left; padding:0.5em; width:6em; } .field { padding:0.5em; } And it worked fine. But for some elements I wanted to apply following change: when I add width to .field class layout goes to blazes: element with .field class appears under element with field-label class. • Best way to do something when a runloop event is done processing?

  I have some processing in my Cocoa app that sometimes ends up calling through a hierarchy of data to do a bunch of work as the result of an event. Each small piece creates and destroys some resources. I don't want those resources around most of the time, but I would like to find a smart way of creating them before all the work and killing them at the end. Short of creating the resources up front and then passing them entirely down through the call hierarchy when work is done, is there a way to know locally in some code when an event loop run has ended? Then I could create them if they're not there, and keep them until the run loop ends, reusing them for any subsequent calls before that time. Thanks.

  Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

  I have an application that isn't nav based. So there is no UINavigationController in the App Delegate. However, I need to switch to a UINavigationController for a piece of the application. Steps I currently took... Create a new Class that extends UIViewController Added a UINavigationController via IB Told IB that the new UIViewController's view is the view for the UINavigationController The problem now is that the File's Owner needs it's view set. But via IB there is no way to specify this. So obviously, I'm not going about this the right way. Any tips in the right direction are much appreciated.

  I have having difficulties protecting my blackberry application persistent data with ControlledAccess object. According to http://www.blackberry.com/developers/docs/4.5.0api/net/rim/device/api/system/PersistentObject.html, I need a PersistentObject, CodeSignKey, and ControlledAccess objects to work. I have everything except one piece: CodeSignKey codeSigningKey = CodeSigningKey.get( "ACME" ); here, I don't know what to replace for "ACME". Is this the PIN code I chose as I filled out the Code Sign Key? Is it my package name, output file name? The Blackberry API documentation doesn't seem to say anything about this particularly important parameter. Help please, thanks.
