• Complete refresh of the OS - windows 7.

  So, the girlfriend's got a virus, and it's pretty nasty. I don't have the time to mess around with it, and she's not so bad with computers, but this is out of her league. (considering her idea of fixing the problem was to download a virus scan that was malware itself) I think I remember hearing that it's possible to put in some restore/recovery disk that comes with the computer to bring Windows back to the way it was originally right from the factory. The problem is, I bought that computer off the shelf - literally - and I don't think I received a disk, or if I had, it's probably gone now. Do you guys have any idea what I could do? I'm all for reformatting, it's just a toy PC for her. I just don't have a disk to re-install windows 7 with.

• Possible to restore Windows Partition disk image?

  I have a machine that was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I used the Disks program in Ubuntu to make a disk image of my windows partition which I saved on an external disk. I then reformatted the main drive and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I created a spare partition and restored that Windows disk image to that partition. Is it possible to boot Windows? I have run boot-repair and Grub now gives me both Ubuntu and Windows options but when I select Windows I get only a black screen with blinking cursor. I ran a Windows recovery disk and ran startup repair but still no luck. I also tried running lilo inside Ubuntu but still can't boot Windows. Any other ideas? PS, I'm on a Netbook with no DVD drive so I can't just reinstall Windows though if that is my only option I can borrow a DVD eventually.

How do I get rid of the duplicates? I have tried apt-get remove and deleting old kernels. I am a bit lost. • Windows boots to Black Screen of Death — Is my HDD faulty?

  My wife's PC suddenly stopped booting up properly. It gets as far as the Windows 'loading' screen with the bar scrolling away, but that's as far as it gets for some time, then suddenly flashes up a BSoD barely long enough to see, then the display cuts out. We've got identical PCs, and after swapping components, I established that my PC suffers the same problem if I swap in the HDD. Even if I plug hers in as a second HDD on my machine, it still does the same thing, even though it's booting from mine. I can't even boot her machine from CD or DVD either, so I couldn't even use a recovery disc. I did manage to partially boot my PC into safe mode with the other HDD attached, and it got as far as loading 'crcdisk.sys' and froze. Anybody know what could be wrong with it, or at least how I can get the data off the disk? I'm assuming there's still data on the disk, given that it at least shows me the vista 'loading' screen.

  Scenario Two drives are connected to a computer. One via a SATA-to-USB interface, the other directly via a SATA-to-eSATA cable. The drive on USB appears as a removable drive, the drive on eSATA appears as a fixed drive. Both use NTFS. The USB drive offers Bitlocker-To-Go, the eSATA drive only offers BitLocker. Question It is my understanding that drives encrypted with BitLocker-To-Go include an app to allow Windows XP read-only access to the volume. Is this the only difference, and is there a way to use Bitlocker-To-Go on the eSATA drive? Update Another difference is found here: The recovery key is required when a BitLocker-protected fixed data drive configured for automatic unlocking is moved to another computer.[1] Assuming that does not apply to removable drives.

  I have MacOsX 10.8.2 installed on my MacBook Pro and Windows 8 licenced on a BootCamp partition. I have messed up my MacOsx partition (problems while programming, .h files not found, old applications removed that still appears) and I wanna start back from a clean OS. Is there a Way to reset my partition (or reinstall, obviously) keeping my BootCamp partition safe ? I know I could use my recovery partition but I do not know if it won't delete my Windows and it no longer appears in disk utility. As I found no answers in the Internet, does someone how how to do that ? Thanks in advance.

• Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

  I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything. • Ubuntu 10.04 upgrade: gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found

  Upgraded a machine straight from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. After a successful upgrade, GDM shows no users on the login screen, with the error message: "gdm-simple-greeter no seat-id found" Users can log in via text mode. A recovery user can startx without issue. I'm convinced this is an issue with GDM and/or ConsoleKit. What are my options? I've debated a reinstall but would rather not. I've also thought of switching to KDM or XDM instead. I've filed a launchpad bug--no responses yet.

• How to add nvidia drivers after previous failure with linux mint?

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was. • Installing 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit Ubuntu?

  I have a 64-bit processor in my PC, but because of worries over application compatibility, up until now I have been using 32-bit Ubuntu (and 32-bit Vista because Dell wouldn't sell me 64-bit with my PC). Is it possible for me to install 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit ubuntu and 32-bit Windows Vista, so I can choose between them at boot and share data, and without uninstalling my 32-bit Ubuntu? My partitions are as follows Drive 1: 10 GB Vista recovery partition (E:), 240 GB Windows NTFS parition (230 GB used, C:). Drive 2: 167 GB Windows NTFS Partition (130 GB used, D: ), 8 GB swap partition, 13 GB / partition (6 GB used), 62 GB /home partition (20 GB used).

• Linux Mint does not start after renaming home directory

  I am new to linux and was just trying to rename the only directory in home from rk to rhk. I messed up the whole thing and the settings. Created some new thing named rhk which I can't remember as it got all messed up and Now I am getting nothing after Linux Mint 10(julia) boots up - no start menu, no panel, no taskbar nothing. I tried to work in the recovery mode and got some(downloaded) 216mb of something(in the repair broken packages) hoping that it might help but didn't help. Moreover whenver I have booted in it shows messages like Could not update ICEauthority file /home/rk./.ICEauthority there is a problem with the configuration server. (usr/lib/libconfig24/gconfsanitycheck2 exited with status 256) The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_mintMenu" The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: GNOME_IndicatorApplet" Naulitis could not create the following reqiured folders: /home/rk/Desktop, /home/rk/. Naulitis Moreover Alt+F2 gives Run application or run with file and nothing seems to be working.

  I am having a dual os, windows 7 and linux, the c drive have 20 GB, in which 5 GB is allocated for windows 7 (original) and 15 gb for linux since the spacing for windows is very low i used EaseUS partition manager and deleted my linux OS, and merged the unused space into my C drive, now it becomes 20GB, the things, after the reboot, I am getting GRUB loading. Welcome to GRUB! error: no such partition. entering rescue mode. . . Kindly help me guys the problem i am facing is i dont have a DVD drive to resolve it, using recovery mode. • Dual boot - disk partition issues basic vs dynamic disk

  I have a lenovo X1 that I am looking to dual boot windows and ubuntu on. I am having an issue. The disk came with 4 partitions SYSTEM_DRV, Windows C:, Lenovov Recovery, Hibernate Partition I have a SSD (250 gb) I have shrunk Windows C: so that I have 100gb of unallocated space. My plan was to install ubuntu on that. But when I try to create a new partition to install ubuntu on. Windows is saying I have to convert to a dynamic disk. I don't really understand the difference between Dyanimc and Basic disk but a quick search I am assuming I dont want to do this as I boot from this disk? Any suggestions on what I can do to dual boot? Thanks

• How can I repair the boot loader on my laptop?

  I had removed my HD from a Dell laptop and accessed it with an external HD port on another computer. Though after returning it to the Dell laptop, it will no longer boot. The PC came pre-installed with Windows 7 and I do not have an installation disk. None of the contents of the original install have been removed or modified. If I use another laptop running Windows 7 to create a repair/recovery disk, would I be able to use it on my Dell to repair the boot sector? How can I repair the bootmgr?   I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5232. Now I am missing the graphics accelerator. I have been to Toshiba's website but cannot find the right one. Same is so for AMD. It has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The machine is recognizing a standard VGA. I ordered a recovery disk on eBay and it was supposed to be here yesterday. Can anyone help with other options?

  Hi, On my SQL server 2008, i have a SQL agent job to restore a database on nightly basis. Procedure: find latest backup on other server Kill all conenction to the destination database Restore destination database with replace, recovery It failed last weekend because the database was being used by a system process (spid 11 checkpoint). since I couldnt kill the system process, I fixed this by restarting sql server. It failed this weekend as well with same error (checkpint process in this database as from sp_who) and when I run: SELECT session_id,request_id,command,status,start_time FROM sys.dm_exec_requests WHERE session_id = 11 It shows: 11 0 CHECKPOINT background 2010-04-06 10:17:49.103 I cant restart the server every time it fails. • Bash Script to Back Up Backs Up Itself

The problem is, that it also tries to backup the tar.gz backup file, even though I am storing the backup in /tmp and omitting /tmp from the backup. • Windows 7 EFI Partition Deleted

  I converted my Windows 7 GPT disk to dynamic, which resulted in it being unable to boot. So I used EaseUs Partition Master on my second Win 7 installation to convert the disk back to basic. Now, I have one partition, which is my C: drive, and I can't figure out how to recovery my EFI partition. I no longer see the "Windows" entry in my EFI boot menu. The Windows 7 repair on the install DVD doesn't see my installation. Please let me know how to restore the EFI partition.

  We use a SharePoint wiki* at the office to serve as a knowledgebase for our IT operations. Recently we went through a disaster recovery exercise where we realized we had a key hole in our plans: how do you restore the services if your instruction manual is down because some services are offline? Anyhow, we did realize that the wiki angle was definitely something we wanted to keep, but rather that we should explore a way to create offline backups of the wiki which could be easily read using common software we should be able to setup without any knowledge from the wiki. So, does anyone know of a good utility that can take a SharePoint wiki and dump it to PDF/Word/RTF/[INSERT HUMAN FRIENDLY FORMAT] easily from the command line? *-Yes, there are better solutions out there. But this was easy and used existing infrastructure and generally does what we need it to do.

• How can I get Transaction Logs to auto-truncate after Backup

  Setup: Sql Server 2008 R2, databases set up with Full recovery mode. I have set up a maintenance plan that backs up the transaction logs for a number of databases on the server. It is set to create backup files in sub-directories for each database, verify backup integrity is turned on, and backup compression is used. The job is set to run once every 2 hours during business hours (8am-6pm). I have tested the job and it runs fine, creates the log backup files as it should. However, from what I have read, once the transaction log is backed up, it should be ok to truncate the transaction log. I do not see any option for doing this in the Sql Server Maintenance Plan designer. How can I set this up?

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, the virtual terminals are not accessible, ie, c+a+F1 etc does nothing, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console by booting off the installation cd, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! Additional Details on my blog and my first attempt at asking for help Update: I can reasonably say it is not a hardware fault, as a full install of 9.10 with dual screen nvidia xinemara indicate that nothing is wonky

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)
