• Does Ubuntu ever push new versions of GCC into the package repository between releases?

  Current version of GCC in Ubuntu 11.04 is 4.5.2. For certain C++0x features, I need GCC version 4.6, but would like to avoid compiling from source. Is there hope that Ubuntu will update GCC in the package repository before the next release in October (11.10). This question asks a similar thing except for an earlier version of Ubuntu and GCC. A second part of the question, if the answer is "no" to the first, then can I hope to see it appear in Ubuntu's unstable repository?

• Latest Exadata Quarterly Full Stack Patch

  The latest Quarterly Full Stack patch was released on October 17th for Exadata.  This patch contains all of the latest recommended patches for the Exadata Database Machine.  For more details, refer to My Oracle Support Note titled Database Machine and Exadata Storage Server 11g Release 2 (11.2) Supported Versions [888828.1].  Note that the information in the note applies only to Exadata Storage Server Software 11.2.  This note is maintained on a regular basis so bookmark it and use it as reference for the latest Exadata Database Machine patching recommendations.

• Hybrid Columnar Compression

  You heard me in the past talk about the HCC feature for Oracle databases. Hybrid Columnar Compression is a fantastic, built-in, free feature of Oracle 11Gr2. One used to need an Exadata to make use of it. However, last October, Oracle opened it up and now allows it to work on ANY Oracle DB server running 11Gr2, as long as the storage behind it is a ZFSSA for DNFS, or an Axiom for FC. • Should one use the legal "shall" in requirements documents and specification documents? [migrated]

  At least in the US, "will" has replaced "shall" in most every context, with the notable exception of the "legal shall". Shall is used instead of will in legal documents to indicate a sense of obligation or requirement; e.g. "the defendant shall vacate the premises by October 16". In software, requirements documents and specification documents serve close to the same purpose as the aforementioned legal documents; does this mean shall should be used in a similar fashion as a result?

It is titled "The Accessibility Act – ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and I will be part of a distinguished panel exploring some of the issues the upcoming European Accessibility Act may address - with a particular emphasis in my case on the role of ICT accessibility. This morning policy dialog will be followed by a more focused workshop in the afternoon looking at specific challenges and potential solutions to those challenges.   Nominations are now open for the 2012 JCP Awards. Submit nominations to PMO at JCP dot ORG or use this form.  The Java Community Process (JCP) program celebrates success. Members of the community nominate worthy participants, Spec Leads, and Java Specification Requests (JSRs) in order to cheer on the hard work and creativity that produces ground-breaking results for the community and industry in the Java Standard Edition (SE), Java Enterprise Edition (EE), or Java Micro Edition (ME) platforms. The community gets together every year at the JavaOne conference to applaud in person the winners of three awards: JCP Member/Participant of the Year, Outstanding Spec Lead, and Most Significant JSR. This year’s unveiling will occur Tuesday evening, 2 October, at the Annual JCP Community Party held in San Francisco during JavaOne. Nominations close on 16 July 2012. • Java ME JSRs approved by the JCP EC

  The two new Java ME related JSRs were submitted to the JCP earlier in October have been approved by the Executive Committee (EC) to continue development in the JCP program.  These JSRs are now open for Expert Group nominations. All registered JCP.org users can nominate themselves to serve on the JSR Expert Group, but you must become a JCP Member to be approved to serve on a JSR Expert Group. JSR 360, Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 8, was approved by the EC with 11 yes votes (AT&T was not eligible to vote).  You can also follow this project on their java.net project. JSR 361, Java ME Embedded Profile, was also approved by the EC with 11 yes votes (AT&T was not eligible to vote).  You can also follow this project on their java.net project. 11 yes votes

• Hello Again, San Francisco

  From the moment I got to the airport in Amsterdam, I've been bumping into JavaOne pilgrims today. Finally got to my hotel, after a pretty good flight (and KLM provides great meals, which helps a lot), and a rather long wait at customs (serves me right for getting seat 66C in a plane with 68 rows). And, best of all, on Twitter I've been seeing a few remarks around the Duke's Choice Awards for this year. The references all point to the September - October issue of the Java Magazine, where page 24 shows the following: So, from page 24 onwards, you can read all about the above applications. What's especially cool is that three of the above are applications created on top of the NetBeans Platform! That's AgroSense (farm management software), MICE (NATO system for defense and battle-space operations), and Level One Registration Tool (UN Refugee Agency sofware for managing refugees). Congratulations to all the winners, looking forward to learning more about them all during the coming days here at the conference.
