• VMware 1.0.1 Windows7 - Ubuntu hostnames

  I'm trying to run Ubuntu as the guest OS using VMWware 1.0.10 with Windows 7 Ultimate as the host OS. I had this set up previously with Win XP as the host OS and in fact I'm using the same .vmx My problem is I can't get either Win7 or Ubuntu to be able to ping the other by hostname. After installing Samba and Winbind on Ubuntu, I was able to get this working when under WinXP, but for some reason I can't get it to work under Win7. I can ping by IP Address, and the guest OS even shows up by hostname under the Windows networking panel (but of course I can't do anything with it), but pinging using short hostnames just won't work. Also, Win7 firewall is turned off completely.

• Why am I seeing excessive disk activity when installing applications?

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a Dell Vostro 1720 with 8GB of RAM, 7200RPM Disk, 2.53 GHz Core2Duo (Windows 7 64 bit is a supported option and the laptop came with the OS pre-installed). I'm noticing some fairly excessive disk activity when running installers. For example the Visual Studio 2010 RC installer constantly accessed the disk for ~10 minutes. It was so excessive that I was unable to use the machine until this ceased. Today I installed Trillian Astra 4.1 for Windows (latest build from the website). Again when I ran the installer I was pretty much locked out of the machine until the disk activity calmed down. In both cases when I eventually managed to launch task manager I could see that the CPU was sitting at around 5% to 7% utilisation whilst this was going on. All other disk related activity is fine, the machine is snappy and applications launch without delay. It's just when I run an installer I see this odd behaviour. Why would this be?

• Windows 7 unresponsive after hibernate.

  The last few days, when I get Windows out of hibernate, Windows itself gets unresponsive. I can use any of my programs that were already opened before hibernating, but the window functions (closing, changing the size etc) aren't reacting. I can't open any new programs, except for the Task Manager. Also, I don't get an Internet connection. When I use Ctrl + Alt + Del, I get either a black screen, or the regular background. Then it hangs and after a while shows me a message that Windows failed starting up that "thing"(don't know what it's called in English, something with safety, etc). I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed.

  I have a desktop with windows 7 ultimate installed. Whenever I shut it down from the start button. The text that says that it is logging off and shutting down is present and the monitor blacks out and says no signal. But the lights in the RAM is still on and all the fans in the desktop is still spinning. Why is that? It seems like its not shutting down completely. I have also got disk problems lately. Event id 175 and 50. Which I think is caused by the computer not shutting down completely. How do I troubleshoot this one? Feel free to ask if you need more details, thanks.

  I have been using Apache Web Server for a while now and one thing I have noticed is that outside of my computer I can not access it. I use my Apache server for PHP development on my computer, but I would like to access stuff I have made outside of my computer. I am on a linksys router network. I usually run it of http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/. I IPCONFIGED my computer and got 192.168.1.105 so I went there with my browser and got the page just fine. I tried doing this on another computer on the same network but it didn't work. How do I fix this? Sorry about the bad wording. • How to access USB stick content from VMWare running Ubuntu 10.10?

  Hi, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 via VMWare under Windows 7. I have followed the procedure to install the USB stick. It is now connected to the host. However, I don't know how to access the content of the stick. My Google research indicates that this may be a mounting issue. I read somewhere that I should check /proc/bus/usb, but the usb directory does not exist in /proc/bus. Unfortunately, I am not a Linux expert at this. The ultimate issue I am trying to solve is the one describe here. I am trying to use vi to create ~/.vmware/config, but it is virtually impossible to use vi, since I don't have access to the arrow keys (chicken & egg problem). I have created the config file on my usb stick and want to copy it where it should be. Thanks!

  Not quite sure if this question is better asked here or on superuser.com Hi All, My Win7 Ultimate no longer 'UAC prompts' me when I open the services applet (administrative tools). I can manipulate services without ever confirming the elevation. Yes, UAC is still enabled. Yes, I've rebooted to make sure this is not due to a former UAC elevation of explorer.exe or so. It looks like a big security hole. Does anyone have an idea about the reason for this behaviour? Or how to investigate it? TIA,

• Why does the CPU usage reach 100% when laptop is plugged in?

  I have an HP Elitebook 8440p with Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 Processor and 8 GB RAM. For the last couple of days, when I plug-in my laptop for charging, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and remains there for around 15 minutes. No offending process shows up in Task Manager/Process Explorer but the laptop is practically unusable for that time. The CPU usage becomes normal when I remove the power cord but shoots up again when plugged back. This is happening with different power adapters/wall sockets so it might not be a faulty adapter issue. Why is this happening and any pointer to resolve this issue?

• Firefox (on windows) constantly consuming 10% CPU - is there an add-in to find the rogue tab?

  I often have many Firefox windows open, each with many tabs. Now and then one of the tabs will be running a web page that for some reason consumes lots of resources. Right now, I have a tab somewhere that is constantly consuming 10% of the CPU...which would be fine as my computer can easily handle that (see specs below...all other apps are responsive), but it seems to slow Firefox down....everything, everywhere is extremely laggy in Firefox, I can see pauses while I type this. Is there: - a way I can isolate separate instances (or even tabs) in FF into a separate process, so one rogue tab doesn't bog down FF across the entire system? - maybe an add-in that can either identify tabs consuming lots of CPU, or maybe a way to "shut down" activity on tabs you haven't used in a while? • Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Why can't I create a Windows backup on my secondary disk?

  I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on an SSD that I've added to the XPS desktop that I bought from Dell. I would like to use the built-in backup functionality to create incremental backups and store them on the large drive that came with the machine. I formatted the large drive and turned it into a Basic disk. However, when I try to set the backup location to the large internal disk (E:\) in the "Set up backup" wizard, a get a message saying, "A system image cannot be saved on a drive that your computer boots from or that Windows is installed on." Windows is not installed on that disk. I even deleted the OEM partition that was on the disk, and removed it completely from the boot order in the BIOS. Any clue why Windows is griping at me about this?

• Workstation 7 build 203739 - Capture Movie Mouse Pointer Not Visible

  Hi, I have noticed that whenever I create a Capture Movie, the movie is fine but the mouse pointer is not visible at all. The clicks are on buttons file menus are executed but is hard for a viewer of the capturre movie session to follow the recording smoothly. This was not a problem in previous versions of WorkStation. Is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to see the mouse pointer? Note: VM Tools are installed, Host is Vista Ultimate Edtion SP1, x64 and the guest is a Win XP SP2. • Windows 7 Home Premium - Unable to View Chinese Characters Properly

  Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

• Visual Studio 2010 Graphic Artifacts

  This problem started happening to me once I installed SP1 onto my Windows 7 Ultimate install. When changing between tabs, or even just hovering my mouse over buttons, VS2010 starts artifacting. It's bad enough where I often times can't see any of the code I'm working on. Sometimes just the button the mouse is over will go black, and other times the entire code panel will turn a black and grey pattern. This problem only happens with Visual Studio 2010 (2008 works fine). The problem remained when I upgraded Visual Studio to SP1. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and the graphics drivers several times now, and I'm about ready to reinstall Windows 7, but I figured I'd ask for suggestions first. Google, as well as searching through Stack Exchange, did not turn up anything useful.

• PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

  AMD PC Motherboard - Asus M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from Asus website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

• Preventing Windows from automatically removing broken desktop shortcuts

  I have two external harddrives which I'm using for archiving purposes, because of that they are turned off most of the time. I have some shortcuts on the desktop to some directories on these external harddisks. Windows occasionally removes these desktop shortcuts. It happens when the harddisks are turned off. I think it thinks that the shortcuts are broken and no longer needed, and tries to clean the desktop up. How do I prevent this behavior? (OS Version: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1)

  My environment: Centos 5.6, Asterisk with freepbx , skype i.e.sends message with parameter skype.sh skype_user message. Now i wanted to send skype notification so that my asterisk server notification are sent to skype rather than email (or to both skype and email). I know, there is voicemail.conf, voicemail_general and vm_email.inc, which has these body created. vm_email.inc emailbody=${VM_NAME},\n\nThere is a new voicemail in mailbox ${VM_MAILBOX} But i dont see where is something like "mail" command. What my thought to do is: instead of saying "mailcmd" pass system ( /path/to/script) and it would simply send message as rest is already configured. Any suggestion where i could run script rather than sending email Or Executing script on every incoming call, so that i could send as notification on every call over the Skype. (however, ultimate goal is to achieve miss call notification or voice mail notification over Skype.)

• I can't delete a file - even when using unlocker

  So I have a 64 bit windows 7 ultimate computer. On my desktop, I have a .iso file that should NOT be used by anything. However, when I use lockhunter (unlocker doesn't work for me), it says it can't unlock or delete it. When I check what it's being used by, it says by the system. I've also tried eraser erase on startup, but that doesn't work, either. How can I remove this file?

• Windows non-responsive during Remote Desktop connection

  This is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I use the command mstsc to establish a Remote Desktop connction to a remote server. The login window shows up, and while I'm entering the password the system almost freezes. Each character of the password takes 3 or 4 seconds to be accepted, and all other opened programs are not accessible. This behavior tends to happen only the first time I use mstsc. If I used it again moments later, everything is normal. Whar can be the cause of this problem?

So after I created a new connection, I created a shortcut from this and placed it in "Startup" folder (at start menu). But after restart my system, windows 7 was coming up without start to connect to my network (that shortcut in startup didn't work!). but I placed a shortcut from Mozilla Firefox in startup folder for testing that, and it started at windows booting. A vmware workstation vm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition server in my laptop w/o internet connectivity Some of my peers' machines connected to internet I want to create a VPN with these machines, provided the VM will not have any direct internet connection and my peers should able to connect to the SVN server application running on this Win2003 server VM. Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Recommend a Rackspace Cloud Server API Language Binding?

  Rackspace publishes only a hard-to-use HTTP and JSON/XML based "API" (they call it an API but it's really a non-standard Web Service without a WSDL). There are dozens of open-source language bindings to choose from. I have tried three of them so far and they're all horrible (incomplete, buggy, and/or undocumented). Can anybody recommend a language binding which is reasonably complete, well documented, and bug-free? I can use Perl, Python, PHP, or Java. My ultimate objective is to create a script/program that will provision a server, launch a process inside it, wait for the process to finish, copy the results to the local server, and destroy the remote server. What's the best choice for that? Thanks
