• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this? • Reasons for firewall alerts from ICMPv6 Local Link Address unreachable?

  For some reason I'm receiving numerous alerts, for a variety of processes, from my firewall. These are all related to ICMPv6 and are the same, apart from the process for which the alert was generated. 'Application/Process' Is trying to Access the Internet Remote Address - fe80::7191:6bd1:e5fa:58af [The Link Local Address] ICMP Type = 1 [Destination Unreachable] ICMP Code = 3 [Address Unreachable] Protocol = ICMPv6 Allow or Block If I Allow or Block, the alert never reoccurs. I understand what the various elements of these messages represent, I just can't fathom out why they are being generated. What could be the reason for these Alerts?   I tried to reinstall Windows XP to Windows 7, but I could not install the video card drivers because the driver installation software only works on XP.I have launched the setup program with XP mode. After I installed the setup, I restarted the computer and Windows 7 wasn't booting.But that isn't the problem why I asked this question. The problem is that I have reinstalled my Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows XP SP3 and I wanted to install Dameon Tools.After installation I restarted the PC (as the setup wanted) and when the Daemon Tools launches it shows the error: Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

• Windows 7 Taskbar doesn't remember configuration

  Hi all... I have my taskbar on Win7 all customized. I have it at the top of the screen, and i have the address bar, desktop toolbar, and a custom folder toolbar all turned on. I have it set to two rows, and have the taskbar and desktop on one row and the address bar and custom folder on the second row. When i shutdown then restart my computer it remembers that i have the taskbar at the top of the screen, but it does not remember the way i had the various bars organized, and it just makes it a single row with the bars all mushed together on one row. Anyone else had this/know how to fix it? Running Win7 Ultimate x64.

• Video has become blurred and smoothed out?!

  Hi, Since yesterday video and graphics on my Windows 7 desktop seem to have become smoothed out and blurred slightly and I'm not sure why. The last thing I did on the machine was play Fallout New Vegas for the first time. An example can be seen in the picture here screenshot - note how smoothed out the character on the right seems, lots of definition looks lost. It's really annoying and happening regardless of what I watch.   I just bought a 48GB SSD express card for my laptop and I am trying to decide how best to use it. I will be running some sort of virtualization (prob VirtualBox) to test / learn Windows Server administration. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have 4GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM SATA hard disk. The express card will read at 115MB/s and write at 65MB/s. So how best to use this new disk? Readyboost, relocate pagefile, store VM disks, mix / match?

• How to change the computer name on a server configured by Puppet

  I am new to Puppet and I'm trying to get Puppet to configure my EC2 instances after they're started from a Cloud Formation Template in AWS. The problem is that all the nodes that get started from the Cloud Formation Template all have the same name (the name from the AMI that the new nodes derive from). I would love to find a way to have puppet rename the nodes when the nodes start up. (although, as far as I know, a Computer Name change requires reboot, a separate issue...) If you can point me to some documentation that can help me figure this out or if you have any ideas that would be great. My ultimate goal is to have each EC2 start with a unique name so that I can use New Relic server monitoring to report the different servers.

• Can I set Windows default second-monitor behaviour to "Extend these displays"?

  I travel to multiple offices (and multiple desks in those offices), and whenever possible I plug an external monitor into my laptop. Whenever I plug in a monitor I haven't used before, Windows defaults to "Duplicate these displays" - which messes up the arrangement of icons on my desktop if the external monitor is a different shape from my laptop's monitor. I then select "Extend these displays", and my laptop screen returns to its original shape - but my icons don't go back to their original arrangement. Grrrrr. Fast-forward a few days or weeks; I've got my icons arranged so I can find stuff again - then I go to a new office and it starts all over again. I'm tired of this. Is it possible to make "Extend these displays" the default behavior? I'm using Windows 8 x64 Home Premium, but I had the same complaint under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. (Prior to that, I hadn't discovered the joy of dual displays. Ah, the time I wasted...)

• Dell XT on Windows 7 never recovers from sleep

  My Dell XT, after upgrade to windows 7 ultimate seems to never recover from a sleep i.e. opening the lid shows a flicker, and then all lights go off. When I press the power button long enough it reboots and says that Windows had a serious error, blah blah (but no BSOD). Hibernate doesnt cause any problem, and that is what I am doing as default. Any idea how to debug more and fix it. Looked around (on web) for answer, tried related solutions (hotfixes for similar but not same problems) etc, but noting fixes this.

• Windows 7 Install command prompt can't access the C drive

  I'm trying to create a new Windows 7 Professional VHD which I can dual boot to, following Scott Hanselman's guide to creating a bootable VHD. When I get to the command prompt in the Windows 7 installation and try to create a VHD or select/attach a pre-created VHD file I get an error saying that diskpart can't find the path specified. If I try and switch to the c drive using cd c: I see c:\ x:\something\> I already have a Windows 7 Ultimate install and my C drive is an SSD – if that makes a difference.

• Automatically make or update a copy real-time on another hard drive volume whenever files are saved to a particular folder

  Whenever I save or update a file to a particular designated folder on my C:\drive I would like to make or update a copy on my network-attached storage device, ideally saving the copy to the NAS as a version rather than overwriting a copy there, if possible. I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Is there any feature built-in that can accomplish this? It has to be a real copy, not merely a pointer. I'm trying to achieve some redundancy for especially critical documents (in a variety of formats) that change frequently throughout the day. P.S. I am looking for folder-level granularity; I wouldn't want this to happen for every file on the C: volume.

• Importing Bookmarks from a Text File (to any browser/website)

  I have dozens of text files containing around 60 url's each, accumulated over years of browsing on multiple computers. I wish to import these into any browser, to allow me to then use cross-browser importing. My ultimate goal is to then import the bookmarks to somewhere like delicious, which will automatically tag the links, allowing me to sort each page by subject. The closest I've managed to find is: Import bookmarks to firefox from txt file However while this plugin imports from a text file, it has no correlation with Firefox's bookmarks, and only allows you to export back to csv/txt files. I understand that the problem of importing from text files is that bookmarks need a Title, and so I wish to use a given pages existing title. I've been unable to find any such tool on the net.

• SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help.. • How do I install a language pack in Windows 7 Home Premium?

  Specifically, I want Korean (link), but I hope this helps other people in general. According to this page, it is only possible for Ultimate and Enterprise. Specifically, I'd like to enable my keyboard to type in Korean, and I specified Korean as the input language (Start - type "Input Languages", only result). Under the General tab, I selected Add, and specified Korean.. but it doesn't work, because the language pack isn't installed I presume. Would anyone know how to add different language input / packs to Windows 7 Home Premium? Also, I tried following this tutorial on adding a language pack to HP, but the .cab keeps disappearing so it will not work. Note: Unlike the link in the tutorial as well, I do not have an option to change the display language of Windows, only the option to change input methods.

• How can I have a Windows 7 VMware guest without mouse support?

  Despite having vmmouse.present = "FALSE" mouse.vusb.absDisabled = "TRUE" pref.motionUngrab = "FALSE" in my .vmx file and a customized VMware Tools installation on the guest that does not include the mouse driver, I somehow have fully integrated mouse support for my Windows 7 VM. I can smoothly mouse from the host into the guest without needing to click or Ctrl+G in and Ctrl+Alt out. I don't want this because of the issues it causes with games. How can I get the VM to have no special mouse support while still having VMware Tools installed for its other functions (network, graphics, etc.)? The mouse works as I want without VMware Tools but not otherwise — again, despite not installing the mouse driver and having all those settings trying to disable it. Device Manager shows that the generic Windows PS/2 mouse driver is being used and not the virtual mouse driver. Guest and host are both Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, x86 and x64 respectively. I'm using VMware Player 3.1.4 and the VMware Tools installed is the latest, 8.4.6.16648.

• Windows 7 fresh install blank screen

  I've just installed Win7 Ultimate to my PC. During the install it reboots a couple of times, but 2nd or 3rd reboot I see the "Starting Windows..." message, but followed by a black screen. No mouse cursor, taskbar, anything. The monitor power light is blue (indicating it has a signal) and it was displaying the setup wizard with no problems whatsoever. Has anyone else witnessed this phenomenon? Many thanks in advance. UPDATE I booted in safe mode, and got a screen saying "Setup is preparing your computer for first use". That's brilliant, although a message box has popped up over that saying: Windows cannot complete instlalation in Safe Mode. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer. So I don't really have the opportunity to do any cleverness with drivers or anything. I guess I could try getting a different version of Win7 (I'm installing from an MSDN DVD).

• VMware Workstation 7 build 203739 - Capture Movie Mouse Pointer Not Visible

  Hi, I have noticed that whenever I create a Capture Movie, the movie is fine but the mouse pointer is not visible at all. The clicks are on buttons file menus are executed but is hard for a viewer of the capturre movie session to follow the recording smoothly. This was not a problem in previous versions of WorkStation. Is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to see the mouse pointer? Note: VM Tools are installed, Host is Vista Ultimate Edtion SP1, x64 and the guest is a Win XP SP2. • Renaming Files & Folders in Windows 7

  This has been happening to me for some time now. I'm currently running Windows 7 RTM. When I try to rename a new folder that is created (by copying usually), I usually get a "Folder is in use" error. I would have to wait a while before I would be able to modify the folder name. Files behave the same way too. I am thinking that this is because I am sharing the folder, or library, via Homegroup Sharing. Is anyone who is running Windows 7 RTM experience this as well? EDIT 1: I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate.

• IE8 Stopped Keeping History

  Like the title says, apparently my IE8 has stopped keeping the history of pages I've visited. I've searched SU and Google and can't find anything that seems to describe what I'm seeing. I have IE set to retain history for 999 days (the maximum allowed): As you can see below, apart from today and last Thursday, IE appears to be oblivious to any activity more recent than three weeks ago. Clicking on either "Thursday" or "Today" reveals no recorded history, however. Very odd behavior. Finally, the history does extend back 30 weeks to when I built the computer, and there is recorded history for every week. I'd appreciate suggestions. NB. Windows 7 Ultimate, x64 (but 32-bit IE8).

• Windows File Checksums - Is my system hacked?

  I would like to know if there is a utility to verify the checksums of every windows file on my Win 7 Ultimate system. It seems on the surface such an obvious utility but I dont ever remember seeing one? I had a very weird experience while surfing earlier today and now Im not entirely sure my system is secure. I have a collection of tools in the WSCC suite but these tools no doubt just make system calls to the win32 api and if that has been subverted then the tools are practically useless. How do I know my Win 7 files are actually Win 7 files? I am particularly interested in verifying the integrity of all network TCP/IP files.

• Default Program With Multiple Versions Installed

  I have multiple versions of Excel installed. Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. I have them installed on one hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. When I double-click on an XLS file, Excel 2007 opens. I would like Excel 2010 to open. I read and followed the instructions to go to the Control Panel at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs" and set the default programs. I changed the default to the physical EXE for Excel 2010 at the proper folder that it is installed. When I double-click on the XLS files, Excel 2007 still opens. So I tried to change it to Excel 2003 just to see if it changed to that and it still opens Excel 2007. What am I missing? I would really like the file extension to open Excel 2010, but can not seem to do that.

• Ubuntu in Virtualbox - web server very slow when using local IP address

  I'm using Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) to learn Ruby On Rails. I'm running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (the host is Windows 7 Ultimate), using bridged networking. When I run my Rails app and point the browser at it using localhost:3000, the app responds immediately and my page is rendered in a second or two. However, if I use 10.0.0.5:3000 (where 10.0.0.5 is my IP address reported using ifconfig), the response from my rails app is incredibly slow - maybe 30 seconds or more for the server to respond and render the page. This happens in both Firefox and Chrome. Also, when I hit the Rails app from the host (to test it in IE), I get the same slooooooow response. Any ideas what might be going on? I've tried it with two different routers, and on two different networks (work and home) with the same result. Cheers all.

• "TMGR is Missing" after repair-installing Windows XP

  I have two OSes installed in my computer. - Windows XP Professional - Windows 7 Ultimate (Release Candidate 1/Build 7100) I used the Windows 7 boot loader by default to choose between OSes. When I was using my WinXP, my computer gets lagged suddenly and continuously, and the only way to fix it is by repair-installing it (because I've experienced this many times before, but without W7 installed). Everything goes OK. But when my XP was successfully reinstalled, I cannot boot my Windows 7 anymore. Every time I tried to boot the harddisk that contains W7, an error appeared. "TMGR is Missing". Now I have no idea how can I get back to my Windows 7. Any kind of help would be appreciated! :)

  I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here?
