• Attributed strings in UITableViewCells without WebView?

- by arnekolja
Hello, does anyone know if there's a way in with 3.0+ to display attributed strings within a UITableViewCell without using a UIWebView for that? I need to display a string with linked, tappable substrings as the typical detailTextLabel. I wouldn't mind exchanging this UILabel against another type of view, but I think a UIWebView could be just too slow when rendering a table with hundrets of cells. Or does someone have opposite experiences here? So my question is: what's the best way to achieve mixed strings in a very large table without a great performance hit? I searched for this almost a whole day now, but I can only find old posts mentioning that there's no attributed string on the iPhone (outdated, as this was pre-3.0) and/or saying that they use a UIWebView for that. But really, I don't think this would perform very well on large tables, would it? Many, many thanks in advance Arne

• Why is my code not printing anything to stdout?

- by WM
I'm trying to calculate the average of a student's marks: import java.util.Scanner; public class Average { public static void main(String[] args) { int mark; int countTotal = 0; // to count the number of entered marks int avg = 0; // to calculate the total average Scanner Scan = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("Enter your average: "); String Name = Scan.next(); while (Scan.hasNextInt()) { mark = Scan.nextInt(); countTotal++; avg = avg + ((mark - avg) / countTotal); } System.out.print( Name + " " + avg ); } }

• How do I set the user's locale on a JSP

- by ebynum
I have a .jsp page that the user loads directly. The request it with a URL like the following: http://www.example.com/myfile.jsp?country=CA&language=fr In the JSP, I pull the URL GET parameters and attempt to set the locale using them as follows: <% String myLanguage = request.getParameter("language"); String myCountry = request.getParameter("country"); Locale myLocale = new Locale(myLanguage, myCountry); pageContext.setAttribute("myLocale", myLocale, PageContext.PAGE_SCOPE); %> <fmt:setLocale value="${myLocale}" scope="page" /> There are several places in the JSP that then display a message pulled from a localized resource bundle using <bean:message bundle="ts" key="..." /> from Struts. On the first request for this page (after changing the language in the URL), it is returned in US English (the default Locale), and then subsequent refreshes will return the properly localized content.

• Decode base64 data as array in Python

- by skerit
I'm using this handy Javascript function to decode a base64 string and get an array in return. This is the string: base64_decode_array('6gAAAOsAAADsAAAACAEAAAkBAAAKAQAAJgEAACcBAAAoAQAA') This is what's returned: 234,0,0,0,235,0,0,0,236,0,0,0,8,1,0,0,9,1,0,0,10,1,0,0,38,1,0,0,39,1,0,0,40,1,0,0 The problem is I don't really understand the javascript function: var base64chars = 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789+/'.split(""); var base64inv = {}; for (var i = 0; i < base64chars.length; i++) { base64inv[base64chars[i]] = i; } function base64_decode_array (s) { // remove/ignore any characters not in the base64 characters list // or the pad character -- particularly newlines s = s.replace(new RegExp('[^'+base64chars.join("")+'=]', 'g'), ""); // replace any incoming padding with a zero pad (the 'A' character is zero) var p = (s.charAt(s.length-1) == '=' ? (s.charAt(s.length-2) == '=' ? 'AA' : 'A') : ""); var r = []; s = s.substr(0, s.length - p.length) + p; // increment over the length of this encrypted string, four characters at a time for (var c = 0; c < s.length; c += 4) { // each of these four characters represents a 6-bit index in the base64 characters list // which, when concatenated, will give the 24-bit number for the original 3 characters var n = (base64inv[s.charAt(c)] << 18) + (base64inv[s.charAt(c+1)] << 12) + (base64inv[s.charAt(c+2)] << 6) + base64inv[s.charAt(c+3)]; // split the 24-bit number into the original three 8-bit (ASCII) characters r.push((n >>> 16) & 255); r.push((n >>> 8) & 255); r.push(n & 255); } // remove any zero pad that was added to make this a multiple of 24 bits return r; } What's the function of those "<<<" and "" characters. Or is there a function like this for Python?

• How to get Firefox to not continue to show "Transferring data from..." in browser status bar after a

- by Edward Tanguay
The following silverlight demo loads and displays a text file from a server. However, in Firefox (but not Explorer or Chrome) after you click the button and the text displays, the status bar continues to show "Transferring data from test.development..." which erroneously gives the user the belief that something is still loading. I've noticed that if you click on another Firefox tab and then back on the original one, the message goes away, so it seems to be just a Firefox bug that doesn't clear the status bar automatically. Is there a way to clear the status bar automatically in Firefox? or a way to explicitly tell it that the async loading is finished so it can clear the status bar itself? • Linq-to-Sql query advice please

- by Mantorok
Hi all Just wondering if this is a good approach, I need to search for items containing all of the specified keywords in a space-delimted string, is this the right approach this? var result = (from row in DataContext.PublishedEvents join link in DataContext.PublishedEvent_EventDateTimes on row.guid equals link.container join time in DataContext.EventDateTimes on link.item equals time.guid orderby row.EventName select new {row, time}); // Split the keyword(s) to limit results with all of those words in. foreach(var keyword in request.Title.Split(" ".ToCharArray(), StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries)) { var val = keyword; result = result.Where(row=>row.row.EventName.Contains(val)); } var end = result.Select(row=>new EventDetails { Title = row.row.EventName, Description = TrimDescription(row.row.Description), StartDate = row.time.StartDate, EndDate = row.time.EndDate, Url = string.Format(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["EventUrl"], row.row.guid) }); response.Total = end.Count(); response.Result = end.ToArray(); Is there a slick Linq-way of doing all of this in one query? Thanks

• HTML form requirements specification

- by Peder
I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy. The specification format may look something like: { '<field_name>' : ['<validation_function>', 'req', ['<requirement>', <param>], ...], ... } ( the requirement list is ordered so that the user can get most basic error messages first, the 'req' requirement must come first if it exists and means that the field is required) e.g.) { 'name' : ['string', 'req', ['min',6], ['max',150], ['match', /^[\sa-z0-9ÅÄÖåäö&]$/i], ['not_match', /^tmp_/]], 'email' : ['email', 'req'], 'email_confirm' : ['same_as', 'email'], 'password' : ['string', 'req', ['min', 6], ['max', 64], ['match', /^[a-z0-9\!@#\$%^&*_+.]$/i] ], } Does anyone know of a similar technology? I think the Rails validation framework solves the problem on the wrong level because I have found that forms often operate on more than one model.

• Deterministic key serialization

- by Mike Boers
I'm writing a mapping class which uses SQLite as the storage backend. I am currently allowing only basestring keys but it would be nice if I could use a couple more types hopefully up to anything that is hashable (ie. same requirements as the builtin dict). To that end I would like to derive a deterministic serialization scheme. Ideally, I would like to know if any implementation/protocol combination of pickle is deterministic for hashable objects (e.g. can only use cPickle with protocol 0). I noticed that pickle and cPickle do not match: >>> import pickle >>> import cPickle >>> def dumps(x): ... print repr(pickle.dumps(x)) ... print repr(cPickle.dumps(x)) ... >>> dumps(1) 'I1\n.' 'I1\n.' >>> dumps('hello') "S'hello'\np0\n." "S'hello'\np1\n." >>> dumps((1, 2, 'hello')) "(I1\nI2\nS'hello'\np0\ntp1\n." "(I1\nI2\nS'hello'\np1\ntp2\n." Another option is to use repr to dump and ast.literal_eval to load. This would only be valid for builtin hashable types. I have written a function to determine if a given key would survive this process (it is rather conservative on the types it allows): def is_reprable_key(key): return type(key) in (int, str, unicode) or (type(key) == tuple and all( is_reprable_key(x) for x in key)) The question for this method is if repr itself is deterministic for the types that I have allowed here. I believe this would not survive the 2/3 version barrier due to the change in str/unicode literals. This also would not work for integers where 2**32 - 1 < x < 2**64 jumping between 32 and 64 bit platforms. Are there any other conditions (ie. do strings serialize differently under different conditions)? (If this all fails miserably then I can store the hash of the key along with the pickle of both the key and value, then iterate across rows that have a matching hash looking for one that unpickles to the expected key, but that really does complicate a few other things and I would rather not do it.) Any insights?

• difference fixed width strings and zero-terminated strings

- by robUK
Hello, gcc 4.4.4 c89 I got into a recent discussion about "fixed width strings" and "zero terminated strings". When I think about this. They seem to be the same thing. A string with a terminating null. i.e. char *name = "Joe bloggs"; Is a fixed width string that cannot be changed. And also has a terminating null. Also in the discussion I was told that strncpy should never been used on 'zero terminated strings'. Many thanks for any susgestions,

• Automapping to EntityKeys in Entity Framework

- by CodeGrue
Does anyone have a technique to automap (using Automapper) references to child entities. So say I have a ViewModel: class AddressModel { int Id; string Street; StateModel State; } class StateModel { int Id; string Name; } And I pass this into a repository to map to equivalent entities in Entity Framework. When Automapping, I want it to automap AddressModel.State.ID to the EntityKey of AddressEntity.StateReference. So hand crafted code would look like this: addressEntity.Id = AddressModel.Id; addressEntity.Street = AddressModel.Street addressEntity.StateReference.EntityKey = new EntityKey("MyDB.States", "Id", AddressModel.State.Id); Obviously, when automapper tries to assign an Address.State.Id to the equivalent in EF, an exception is thrown.

• XSD: xs:sequence & xs:choice combination for xs:extension elements?

- by bguiz
Hi, My question is about defining an XML schema that will validate the following sample XML: <rules> <other>...</other> <bool>...</bool> <other>...</other> <string>...</string> <other>...</other> </rules> The order of the child nodes does not matter. The cardinality of the child nodes is 0..unbounded. All the child elements of the rules node have a common base type, rule, like so: <xs:complexType name="booleanRule"> <xs:complexContent> <xs:extension base="rule"> ... </xs:extension> </xs:complexContent> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="stringFilterRule"> <xs:complexContent> <xs:extension base="filterRule"> ... </xs:extension> </xs:complexContent> </xs:complexType> My current attempt at defining the schema for the rules node is below. However, Can I nest xs:choice within xs:sequence? If, where do I specify the maxOccurs="unbounded" attribute? Is there a better way to do this, such as an xs:sequence which specifies only the base type of its child elements? <xs:element name="rules"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:choice> <xs:element name="bool" type="booleanRule" /> <xs:element name="string" type="stringRule" /> <xs:element name="other" type="someOtherRule" /> </xs:choice> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:element>

• Extract a regular expression match in R version 2.10

- by tovare
Hi, I'm trying to extract a number from a string. And do something like this [0-9]+ on this string "aaaa12xxxx" and get "12". I thought it would be something like: > grep("[0-9]+","aaa12xxx", value=TRUE) [1] "aaa12xxx" And then I figured... > sub("[0-9]+", "\\1", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaa12xxx" But I got some form of response doing: > sub("[0-9]+", "ARGH!", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaaARGH!xxx" There's a small detail I'm missing Please advice :-) I'm using R version 2.10.1 (2009-12-14) Thanks ! Comments on the solution The best solution is to ignore the standard functions and install Hadley Wickham's stringr package to get something that actually makes sense. Kudos to Marek for figuring out how the standard library worked.

• best practice for passing many arguments to method ?

- by Tony
Occasionally , we have to write methods that receive many many arguments , for example : public void doSomething(Object objA , Object objectB ,Date date1 ,Date date2 ,String str1 ,String str2 ) { } When I encounter this kind of problem , I often encapsulate arguments into a map. Map<Object,Object> params = new HashMap<Object,Object>(); params.put("objA",ObjA) ; ...... public void doSomething(Map<Object,Object> params) { // extracting params Object objA = (Object)params.get("objA"); ...... } This is not a good practice , encapsulate params into a map is totally a waste of efficiency. The good thing is , the clean signature , easy to add other params with fewest modification . what's the best practice for this kind of problem ?

• UITableView with Core Data and fetchedResultsController - don't want to call it at start up

- by zebulon
Hi all, I started with the Navigation-based application. I have a UITableView that shows the content fetched from CoreData - using the - (NSFetchedResultsController *)fetchedResultsController from the template. The thing is that I don't want to fill the TableView with the results at the start-up, instead I want to fill the TableView with the results from a search. In my app I have an UITextField, where the user can type a string. And from that string, using predicate, I want to fill the UITableView with the results. In other words, at start-up, the UITableView should be empty and later filled with the search-results. Does anyone have an idea on how to accomplish this? Thanks in advance! EDIT: Solved it by moving out if (![fetchedResultsController_ performFetch:&error]) { and calling it later. I feel a bit stupid ;)

• Google Chart Number formatting

- by MizAkita
I need to format my pie and column charts to show the $ and comma in currency format ($###,###) when you hover over the charts. Right now, it is displaying the number and percentage but the number as #####.## here is my code. Any help would be appreciated. // Load the Visualization API and the piechart package. google.load('visualization', '1.0', {'packages':['corechart']}); // Set a callback to run when the Google Visualization API is loaded. google.setOnLoadCallback(drawChart); var formatter = new google.visualization.NumberFormat({ prefix: '$' }); formatter.format(data, 1); var options = { pieSliceText: 'value' }; // Callback that creates and populates a data table, // instantiates the pie chart, passes in the data and // draws it. function drawChart() { // REVENUE CHART - Create the data table. var data4 = new google.visualization.DataTable(); data4.addColumn('string', 'Status'); data4.addColumn('number', 'In Thousands'); data4.addRows([ ['Net tution & Fees', 213.818], ['Auxiliaries', 30.577], ['Government grants/contracts', 39.436], ['Private grants/gifts', 39.436], ['Investments', 10.083], ['Clinics', 14.353], ['Other', 5.337] ]); // EXPENSES CHART - Create the data table. var data5 = new google.visualization.DataTable(); data5.addColumn('string', 'Status'); data5.addColumn('number', 'Amount'); data5.addRows([ ['Instruction', 133.868], ['Sponsored Progams', 34.940], ['Auxiliaries', 30.064], ['Academic Support', 25.529], ['Depreciation & amortization', 18.548], ['Student Services', 22.626], ['Plant operations & maintenance', 18.105], ['Fundraising', 13.258], ['Geneal Administration', 11.628], ['Interest', 6.846], ['Student Aid', 1.886], ]); // ENDOWMENT CHART - Create the data table. var data6 = new google.visualization.DataTable(); data6.addColumn('string', 'Status'); data6.addColumn('number', 'In Millions'); data6.addRows([ ['2010', 178.7], ['2011', 211.693], ['2012', 199.3] ]); // Set REVENUE chart options var options4 = { is3D: true, fontName: 'Arial', colors:['#AFD8F8', '#F6BD0F', '#8BBA00', '#FF8E46', '#008E8E', '#CCCCCC', '#D64646', '#8E468E'], 'title':'', 'width':550, 'height':250}; // Set EXPENSES chart options var options5 = { is3D: true, fontName: 'Arial', colors:['#AFD8F8', '#F6BD0F', '#8BBA00', '#FF8E46', '#008E8E', '#CCCCCC', '#D64646', '#8E468E'], 'title':'', 'width':550, 'height':250}; // Set ENDOWMENT chart options var options6 = { is3D: true, fontName: 'Arial', colors:['#AFD8F8', '#F6BD0F', '#8BBA00', '#FF8E46', '#008E8E', '#CCCCCC', '#D64646', '#8E468E'], 'title':'', 'width':450, 'height':250}; // Instantiate and draw our chart, passing in some options. var chart4 = new google.visualization.PieChart(document.getElementById('chart_div4')); chart4.draw(data4, options4); var chart5 = new google.visualization.PieChart(document.getElementById('chart_div5')); chart5.draw(data5, options5); var chart6 = new google.visualization.ColumnChart(document.getElementById('chart_div6')); chart6.draw(data6, options6);}

• Type problem when including tuple

- by Person
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with Feature Pack 1. I have a typedef like this typedef std::tr1::tuple<std::string, std::string, int> tileInfo with a function like this const tileInfo& GetTile( int x, int y ) const. In the implementation file the function has the exact same signature (with the added class name qualifier) and I am getting a redefinition: different type modifiers error. It seems to be looking for an int& instead of a tileInfo& When I mouse over the type of the function in the header, i.e. tileInfo& it brings up a little bar saying static const int tileInfo. I think this may be the problem, but I'm not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

• 'Why' and 'Where' Generics is actually used?

- by NLV
Hi all I know that generics are used to achieve type safety and i frequently read that they are largely used in custom collections. But why actually do we need to have it generic? For example, Why cant i use string[] instead of List<string> Lets consider i declare generic class and it has a property X T x; If i provide a method for the class which does x = x + 1; what does it mean actually? I dono what T is actually going to be and i dono what x = x + 1 going to perform actually? If i'm not able to do my own manipulations in my methods how the generics are going to be help me anyway? I've already studied lot of bookish answers. It would be much appreciated if any one can provide some clear insights in this. Regards NLV

• Need help with writing test

- by London
I'm trying to write a test for this class its called Receiver : public void get(People person) { if(null != person) { LOG.info("Person with ID " + person.getId() + " received"); processor.process(person); }else{ LOG.info("Person not received abort!"); } } Here is the test : @Test public void testReceivePerson(){ context.checking(new Expectations() {{ receiver.get(person); atLeast(1).of(person).getId(); will(returnValue(String.class)); }}); } Note: receiver is the instance of Receiver class(real not mock), processor is the instance of Processor class(real not mock) which processes the person(mock object of People class). GetId is a String not int method that is not mistake. Test fails : unexpected invocation of person.getId() I'm using jMock any help would be appreciated. As I understood when I call this get method to execute it properly I need to mock person.getId() , and I've been sniping around in circles for a while now any help would be appreciated.
