  I'm designing a News Feed system using PHP/MySQL similar to facebook's. I have asked a similar question before but now I've changed the design and I'm looking for feedback. Example Notifications: User_A commented on User_B's new album. "Hey man nice picture!" User_B added a new Photo to [his/her] profile. [show photo thumbnail] Initially, I implemented this using excessive columns for Obj1:Type1 | Obj2:Type2 | etc.. Now the design is set up using a couple special keywords, and actor/receiver relationships. My database is designed for efficiency - using a table of messages joined on a table containing userid,actionid,receiverid,receiverObjectTypeID, Here's a condensed version of what it will look like once joined: News_ID | User_ID | Message | Timestamp 2643 A %a commented on %o's new %r. SomeTimestamp 2644 B %a added a new %r to [his/her] profile. SomeTimestamp %a = the User_ID of the person doing the action %r = the receiving object %o = the owner of the receiving object (for example the owner of the album) (NULL if %r is a user) Questions: Is this a smart (efficient/scalable) way to move forward? How can I show messages like: "User_B added 4 new photos to his profile."?

• JScrollPanel without scrollbars

  I'm trying to use a JScrollPanel to display a JPanel that might be too big for the containing Jpanel. I don't want to show the scrollbars (yes, this is questionable UI design, but it is my best guess of what the customer wants. We use the same idea other places in the application, and I feel this case have given me enough time to ponder if I can do it in a better way, but if you have a better idea I might accept it an answer.) First attempt: set verticalScrollBarPolicy to NEVER. Result: Scrolling using mouse wheel doesn't work. Second attempt: set the scrollbars to null. Result: Scrolling using mouse wheel doesn't work. Third attempt: set scrollbars visible property to false. Result: It is immidiately set visible by Swing. Fourth attempt: inject a scrollbar where setVisible is overridden to do nothing when called with true. Result: Can't remember exactly, but I think it just didn't work. Fifth attempt: inject a scrollbar where setBounds are overridden. Result: Just didn't look nice. (I might have missed something here, though.) Sixth attempt: ask stackoverflow. Result: Pending. Scrolling works once scrollbars are back.

  I have been given the dubious task of working with the Facebook API. I have managed to get quite far with all the little bits and pieces (bringing in "fan pages" and "friend lists"). However, I cannot seem to import a users wall into my App using SOLELY Javascript. • SerializationException with custom GenericIdentiy?

  I'm trying to implement my own GenericIdentity implementation but keep receiving the following error when it attempts to load the views (I'm using asp.net MVC): System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException was unhandled by user code Message="Type is not resolved for member 'OpenIDExtendedIdentity,Training.Web, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'." Source="WebDev.WebHost" I've ended up with the following class: [Serializable] public class OpenIDExtendedIdentity : GenericIdentity { private string _nickName; private int _userId; public OpenIDExtendedIdentity(String name, string nickName, int userId) : base(name, "OpenID") { _nickName = nickName; _userId = userId; } public string NickName { get { return _nickName; } } public int UserID { get { return _userId; } } } In my Global.asax I read a cookie's serialized value into a memory stream and then use that to create my OpenIDExtendedIdentity object. I ended up with this attempt at a solution after countless tries of various sorts. It works correctly up until the point where it attempts to render the views. What I'm essentially attempting to achieve is the ability to do the following (While using the default Role manager from asp.net): User.Identity.UserID User.Identity.NickName ... etc. I've listed some of the sources I've read in my attempt to get this resolved. • using indexer to retrieve Linq to SQL object from datastore

  class UserDatastore : IUserDatastore { ... public IUser this[Guid userId] { get { User user = (from u in _dataContext.Users where u.Id == userId select u).FirstOrDefault(); return user; } } ... } One of the developers in our team is arguing that an indexer in the above situation is not appropriate and that a GetUser(Guid id) method should be prefered. The arguments being that: 1) We aren't indexing into an in-memory collection, the indexer is basically performing a hidden SQL query 2) Using a Guid in an indexer is bad (FxCop flagged this also) 3) Returning null from an indexer isn't normal behaviour 4) An API user generally wouldn't expect any of this behaviour I agree to an extent with (most of) these points. But I'm also inclined to argue that one of the characteristics of Linq is to abstract the database access to make it appear that you're simply working with a bunch of collections, even though the lazy evaluation paradigm means those collections aren't evaluated until you run a query over them. It doesn't seem inconsistent to me to access the datastore in the same manner as if it was a concrete in-memory collection here. Also bearing in mind this is an inherited codebase which uses this pattern extensively and consistently, is it worth the refactoring? I accept that it might have been better to use a Get method from the start, but I'm not yet convinced that it's completely incorrect to be using an indexer. I'd be interested to hear all opinions, thanks.

• Asynchronous callback - gwt

  Hi, I am using gwt and postgres for my project. On the front end i have few widgets whose data i am trying to save on to tables at the back-end when i click on "save project" button(this also takes the name for the created project). In the asynchronous callback part i am setting more than one table. But it is not sending the data properly. I am getting the following error: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: insert or update on table "entitytype" violates foreign key constraint "entitytype_pname_fkey" Detail: Key (pname)=(Project Name) is not present in table "project". But when i do the select statement on project table i can see that the project name is present. • Monitor file selection in explorer (like clipboard monitoring) in C#

  Hi, I am trying to create a little helper application, one scenario is "file duplication finder". What I want to do is this: I start my C# .NET app, it gives me an empty list. Start the normal windows explorer, select a file in some folder The C# app tells me stuff about this file (e.g. duplicates) How can I monitor the currently selected file in the "normal" windows explorer instance. Do I have to start the instance using .NET to have a handle of the process. Do I need a handle, or is there some "global hook" I can monitor inside C#. Its a little bit like monitoring the clipboard, but not exactly the same...   According to rule SA1201 in StyleCop elements in class must appear in correct order. The order is following: Fields Constructors Finalizers (Destructors) Delegates Events Enums Interfaces Properties Indexers Methods Structs Classes Everything is ok, except of Interfaces part, because Interface can contain mehtods, events, properties etc... If we want to be strict about this rule then we won't have all members of Interface in one place which is often very useful. According to StyleCop help this problem can be solved by spliting class into partial classes. • How to find the leaky faucet that loads into Malloc 32kb

  I have been messing around with Leaks trying to find which function is not being deallocated (I am still new to this) and could really use some experienced insight. I have this bit of code that seems to be the culprit. Every time I press the button that calls this code, 32kb of memory is additionally allocated to memory and when the button is released that memory does not get deallocated. What I found was that everytime that AVAudioPlayer is called to play an m4a file, the final function to parse the m4a file is MP4BoxParser::Initialize() and this in turn allocates 32kb of memory through Cached_DataSource::ReadBytes My question is, how do I go about deallocating that after it is finished so that it doesn't keep allocating 32kb every time the button is pressed? • cakephp Activation Email Sending slow

  Hi all, I have a simple email sender for user account activation. Depending on which email address I use, I get significantly different response times: University email - 1 minute, Gmail - 3-4 hours, Yahoo - 1 or 2 days -- which seems bizarre. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon? EDIT: There weren't many responses (even for a bounty), but I'll try to explain my problem more clearly. This probably isn't greylsting -- If I so a simple: php mail ($to, $subject, $body) // this delivers instantly. • Swingworker producing duplicate output/output out of order?

  What is the proper way to guarantee delivery when using a SwingWorker? I'm trying to route data from an InputStream to a JTextArea, and I'm running my SwingWorker with the execute method. I think I'm following the example here, but I'm getting out of order results, duplicates, and general nonsense. • Adding a JLabel to JLayeredPane from event listener not dragging.

  Ok, So for some reason When I add components to a JLayeredPane in its constructor: JLabel label = new JLabel(); label.setSize(100,100); label.setText("This works"); add(label); It works perfectly fine, but If a add it later in the JLayeredPane's parent EDT it doesnt let me move the objects around but they let me see the objects. • Datatable add new column and values speed issue

  I am having some speed issue with my datatables. In this particular case I am using it as holder of data, it is never used in GUI or any other scenario that actually uses any of the fancy features. In my speed trace, this particular constructor was showing up as a heavy user of time when my database is ~40k rows. So my solution to this was to open editing on all of the rows and never close them again. _dt.BeginLoadData(); foreach (DataRow row in _dt.Rows) row.BeginEdit(); Is there a better solution? This feels too much like a big giant hack that will eventually come and bite me. You might suggest that I dont use DataTable at all, but I have already considered that and rejected it due to the amount of effort that would be required to reimplement with a custom class. The main reason it is a datatable is that it is ancient code (.net 1.1 time) and I dont want to spend that much time changing it, and it is also because the original table comes out of a third party component.

• How can I open VLC via browser with PHP (Mac OS X)

  I'm trying to open VLC via browser and make it instantly play the given video file on Mac OS X. This runs on my local server and is only meant to run locally - therefore I already run apache (MAMP) with my username and with group "staff" (defined in httpd.conf). YES - I do know that VLC has http interface - however that is not what I need, so do not suggest that... My current system works without any problems when I run it via Terminal: php /var/www/Movies/index.php - This leads to VLC opening and video starts playing fullscreen like intented. Problems start when I run the same PHP-page with browser. Then the VLC-process starts, but there's no GUI for it, video file won't start playing and the VLC-process takes nearly 100% of CPU. Both; terminal and browser started VLC-processes run with the same user (mine) Both have "Parent process" bash VLC-process begun with Terminal has empty "Process group" (only process id-number) and browser started has "httpd" + (id-number) VLC-process started via browser makes 1000-times more "Mach System Calls" than it's Terminal-started counterpart.   I have a silverlight application which users can install out-of-browser.   I have a series of (say) boxes on the screen in a row, all subviews of my main view. Each is a UIView. I want to shift them all left and have a new view also enter the screen from the right in lockstep.
