  • Delayed instantiation with c# using statment

    - by fearofawhackplanet
Is there any way to write a using statement without instantiating the IDisposable immediately? For example, if I needed to do something like: using (MyThing thing) { if (_config == null) { thing = new MyThing(); } else { thing = new MyThing(_config); } // do some stuff } // end of 'using' Is there an accepted pattern for cases like this? Or am I back to handling the IDisposable explicitly again?

  • Javascript plugins design pattern like jQuery

    - by Marco Demaio
Could someone write down a very simple basic example in javascript to conceptualize (and hopefully make me understand) how the jQuery plugin design pattern is done and how it works? I'm not interested in how creating plugin for jQuery (so no jQuery code here at all). I'm interested in a simple explanation (maybe with a bit of Javascript code) to explain how it is done the plugin concept. Plz do not reply me to go and read jQuery code, I tried, but I it's too complex, otherwise I would have not post a question here.

  • What the purpose/difference in using an event-type constructor

    - by phq
In all examples I can find as well as the automatically generated code i Visual Studio, events are set using the following code: button1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button1_Click); But I can also write it visually cleaner by omitting the constructor wrapper: button1.Click += this.button1_Click; Which also compile fine. What is the difference between these two? And why is the first one mostly used/preferred?

  • Why is the compiler not complaining about an additional ',' in Array or Object Initializers?

    - by Danvil
Using simple type like class A { public int X, Y; } with object intializers, one can write var a = new A { X=0, Y=0 }; But the following is also accepted by the compiler: var a = new A { X=0, Y=0, }; // notice the additional ',' Same for int[] v = new int[] { 1, 2, }; This looks a bit strange ... Did they forgot to reject the additional ',' in the compiler or is there a deeper meaning behind this?

  • Detect the file size of a link's href using JavaScript

    - by noblethrasher
Hi, Would like to write a script to detect the file size of the target of a link on a web page. Right now I have a function that finds all links to PDF files (i.e. the href ends with '.pdf') and appends the string '[pdf]' to the innerText. I would like to extend it so that I can also append some text advising the user that the target is a large file (e.g. greater than 1MB). Thanks

    - by DonGar
I'm attempting to write a function in bash that will access the scripts command line arguments, but they are replaced with the positional arguments to the function. Is there any way for the function to access the command line arguments if they aren't passed in explicitly? # Demo function function stuff { echo $0 $* } # Echo's the name of the script, but no command line arguments stuff # Echo's everything I want, but trying to avoid stuff $*

  • How would I rspec/test an updated_at field without using sleep() in ruby?

    - by Kamilski81
    How do i write my spec without using the sleep(1.second) method? When I remove the sleep then my tests break because they are returning the same time stamp? I have the following class method: def skip qs = find_or_create_by(user_id: user_id) qs.set_updated_at qs.n_skip += 1 qs.save! end and following spec: qs = skip(user.id) sleep(1.second) qs2 = skip(user.id) qs.should_not be_nil qs2.should_not be_nil (qs.updated_at < qs2.updated_at).should be_true

    - by Richard Knop
Why is it that this works: $cacheMatchesNotPlayed = $cache->load('externalData'); $cacheMatchesNotPlayed = $cacheMatchesNotPlayed['matchesNotPlayed']; But this doesn't work: $cacheMatchesNotPlayed = $cache->load('externalData')['matchesNotPlayed']; Is there some reason for it? The second bit is easier to write.
