  • Question regarding drives

    - by user205934
I am a new Ubuntu user who has spent a lot of time on Windows. A very common practice for me on Windows was making two drives, C: and D: , storing installs/files in C:, and I used D: for backup or if I downloaded something that I wanted to save, I saved in D: When installing Ubuntu, it asked me if I wanted to replace Windows 7. I thought it would install Ubuntu on C: but instead it used the whole partition, nevertheless I recovered my backup using testdisk. What I wanted to do was to create a similar backup drive on Linux too. My current partition table: sda 8:0 0 232.9G 0 disk +-sda1 8:1 0 230.9G 0 part / +-sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part +-sda5 8:5 0 2G 0 part [SWAP] sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom So should I use Gparted to create another sda3 and store my important data on that? Also my current sda2 is listed as an extended partition, should I delete it? It's a very small partition, just 1K.

I would like to order by date and then team in a MySQL query. It should be something similar to this: SELECT * FROM games ORDER BY gamedate ASC, team_id AND it should output something like this: 2010-04-12 10:20 Game 1 Team 1 2010-04-12 11:00 Game 3 Team 1 2010-04-12 10:30 Game 2 Team 2 2010-04-14 10:00 Game 4 Team 1 So that Team 1 is under each other on the same date, but separate on a new date

  • Zend Framework-where should this root.php file go for MVC?

    - by Joel
Hi guys, I'm converting over a web-app to use the MVC structure of Zend Framework. I have a root.php include file that contains most of the database info, and some static variables that are used in the program. I'm not sure if some of this should be in the application.ini of in a model that is called by the init() function in a controller, or in the bootstrap or what? • Tomcat running, catalina throwing exception

  • How can I keep the cpu temp low?

    - by Newton
I have an HP pavilion dv7, I'm using ubuntu 12.04 so the overheating problem with sandybridge cpu is a lot better. However my laptop is still becoming too hot to keep on my legs. The problem is that the fan wait too much before starting, so the medium temp is too hight. When I'm using windows 7 the laptop is room-temperature cold, I've absolutely no problem. On windows the fan is always spinning very low & very silently so the heat is continuously removed, without reaching an unconfortable temp. How can I force the computer to act like that also on ubuntu? PS The bios can't let me control this kind of thing, and this is my experience with lm-sensors and fancontrol al@notebook:~$ sudo sensors-detect [sudo] password for al: # sensors-detect revision 5984 (2011-07-10 21:22:53 +0200) # System: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC (laptop) # Board: Hewlett-Packard 1800 This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. • Dell Studio 1737 Overheating

    - by Sean
I am using a Dell Studio 1737 laptop. I have been running Linux and have ran Windows recently for a very long time. I upgraded to the 10.10 distribution and since that distro, it seems that for some reason all Linuxes want to push my laptop to extremes. I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 since I heart that it contains kernel fixes for overheating issues. 12.04 will actually eventually cool the system, but that is after the fans run to the point it sounds like a jet aircraft taking off and the laptop makes my hands sweat. In trying to combat the heat problems I have done the following: I installed the propriatery driver for my ATI Mobility HD 3600. I have tried both the one in the Additional Drivers and also tried ATI's latest greatest version. If I don't install this my laptop will overheat and shut off in minutes. Both seem to perform similarly, but the heat problem remains. I have tried limiting the CPU by installing the CPUFreq Indicator. This does help keep the machine from shutting off, but the heat is still uncomfortable to be around the machine. I usually run in power saver mode or run the cpu at 1.6 GHZ just to error on safety. I ran sensors-detect and here are the results: sean@sean-Studio-1737:~$ sudo sensors-detect # sensors-detect revision 5984 (2011-07-10 21:22:53 +0200) # System: Dell Inc. And the Magento Site which consists of a lot of InnoDB tables, some MyISAM and some INMEMORY. The "read" side seems to be running pretty well with a mass of optimizations I've used on Magento, the NGINX setup and PHP-FPM + XCACHE. I'd love to have a kick in the right direction with the MySQL config so I'm not blindly altering it based on the MySQLTuner without understanding what I'm changing. Thanks

  • Log of cron actions on OS X

    - by Doug Harris
Does the cron which comes with OS X log its actions anywhere? I'm not looking for output of any particular cron job, but rather log of what cron is doing. On a couple linux machines I've checked, there's /var/log/cron which has contents like: Apr 26 11:00:01 localhost crond[27755]: (root) CMD (/root/bin/mysql-backup) Apr 26 11:01:01 localhost crond[27892]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) Apr 26 11:07:01 localhost crond[28138]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/bin/python /home/ user1/scripts/pythonscript.py) Apr 26 11:18:18 localhost crontab[28921]: (user2) LIST (user2) Apr 26 11:18:22 localhost crontab[28929]: (user2) BEGIN EDIT (user2) Apr 26 11:18:59 localhost crontab[28929]: (user2) REPLACE (user2) This shows when jobs ran, when users viewed or edited crontabs, etc. This stuff is nowhere that I've found on my Snow Leopard machine.

  • Excel 2007: Using a time to set XY chart axis scaling like in 2003

    - by CookieOfFortune
In Excel 2003, when you created a XY chart using time as an axis, you could set the scaling of these axes by typing in the date. In Excel 2007, you have to use the decimal version of the time (eg. How many days since some arbitrary earlier date). I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to make such a calculation? A developer posted on a blog that this issue would be fixed in a future release, but all versions of Excel 2007 I have tried have not resolved this issue. The relevant quote: Those of you familiar with this technique of converting time to a decimal may recall that Excel 2003 allowed you to enter a date and time like “1/1/07 11:00 AM” directly in the axis option min/max fields and Excel would calculate the appropriate decimal representation. This currently does not work in Excel 2007 but will be fixed in a subsequent release.

  • Inserting static current time in Excel

    - by Mike Cole
I have a time log spreadsheet. I have a new sheet for each day. In each sheet, I have a transactional record of how my time was spent. When I start or end a task, I usually type in the time ("11:00 AM" for example). Is there a shortcut to inserting the current time into a field? I'm sure it can be done with a macro, but I'm not very knowledgeable about macros. I'd like to simply highlight a field and hit some sort of shortcut key to insert a static value of the current time. Thanks for any help!

  • SSL Certificate Expiry: Does the expiry time make any difference at all?

    - by CYMR0
I need to know when an SSL certificate actually expires. Does it just look at the expiry date, or does it also take into account the expiry time? Let's say a certificate expired on 1/1/2013 at 11am. Does that certificate expire at 11:01am or is it only the following day that the certificate expires? I have been told both are true. Hope that makes sense! Our suppliers messed up and let our certificate expire, and I'm trying to figure out how much compensation we're owed. I found this question Details on exact expiration datetime of an SSL certificate? but it didn't quite answer what I need (and I didn't like to revive a dead question).
