  I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. One for low-level platform development (for the guys working with Platform Builder), another one for native application development (for people writing their real-time applications in C/C++ or people using Silverlight for Windows Embedded) and, last but not least, a forum dedicated to managed application development (for people that are quickly developing their applications with the .NET Compact Framework).   Every once in a while on some technology websites a headline like this will pop up: http://www.osor.eu/news/nl-moving-to-open-source-would-save-government-one-to-four-billion My initial thought about government and organizations moving to open source software is that tons of programmers would lose their jobs and the industry would shrink. At the same time the proliferation and use of open source software seems to be greatly encouraged in many programming communities. Is my thinking that the full embrace of open source software everywhere will hurt the software industry a misconception? If it is not, then why do so many programmers love open source software?

  We have a site primarily targeted at the UK market, and are adding a US-market alternative. As per Google's recommendations: To indicate to Google that you want the German version of the page to be served to searchers using Google in German, the en-us version to searchers using google.com in English, and the en-gb version to searchers using google.co.uk in English, use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" to identify alternate language versions. Which gives us: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" href="http://www.example.com/page.html" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.example.com/us/page.html" /> We do get enquiries from other areas of the world - particularly where there are expat communities (Dubai, UAE, Portugal etc). By adding the above tags, is there a risk that Google will only surface our site for UK and US search users? Do we need to specify a catch-all that will default all other searches to our UK site?

• how to select categories for user generated content site?

  On the site I'm building, users can create tutorials. I want the users to be able to create tutorials on as many subjects as possible, but still have some preset categories. What's the best way to select these categories? The reason I don't just let users add keywords, and use these for categorization, is because users gain experience points in a certain subject when their tutorial is liked by someone, and in a similar way the Stack Exchange network does, create communities around these subjects. I will give visiters the possibility to suggest new categories. here are the categories that I'm thinking of at the moment: health gardening cooking technology science & math music visual art

• Is Apple doing a favor to HTML5?

  As everyone know, with the latest release of the iPhone OS, Apple made all applications not developed natively with the Apple stack (XCode, Objective-C) illegal. This change created a big turmoil in all developer communities because that means that no translators/converters/adapters can be used to develop native iPhone app. While probably this had the goal to ban only the new iPhone Packager included in Adobe CS5 (which would have allowed Flash developer to develop a Flash application and automatically...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Which languages are more conducive to telecommuting, and also less concerned with pairing?

  I don't know that it may even make a difference, and I reckon if it did the differences would be cultural rather than technical, but if one were going to set out today (2011) to learn a language, and specifically wanted to telecommute (so they could live in two different places during the year), are there any languages whose culture looks more favorably upon telecommuting than other languages / cultures? For example, I get the impression (and I am probably completely wrong) that in the Ruby community, you are more likely to be expected to be on-site and doing pair programming (though I suppose you can do pairing remotely too). As a corollary question, are there languages / communities where pair programming is less important, for people who wanted to program in part because they aren't social butterflies?

• How should I select continuous integration tool?

  I found this cool comparison table for integration servers on Wikipedia, but I am a little uncertain how to rank the tools vs. my needs and interests. The chart itself seems to have a lot of boxes marked unknown, so if you are comfortable updating it on Wikipedia, that could be great too. Are there a few top performing products so I can quickly narrow down to four or five options? Which products seems to have the largest user communities and most ongoing enhancements and integration with new tools? Are the open source offerings best, or are there high quality tools that can be a great deal for a single user at home? Will use of multiple systems (primary desktop, local only home network server, personal and work notebooks, multiple virtual machines spread across all) create problems and how can they be managed?

• Using an open source non-free license

  Are there any projects/products out there that use an open source license that basically says "free for small companies" and "cost money for larger companies" in addition to "make modifications available"? (And are there any standard licenses with such a wording?) If I were to release a project under such a license, would it be automatically shunned by every developer on the face of the earth, or, assuming it is actually a useful project, does it have a fair chance at getting contributions from Joe Programmer? The second part of this question can easily become subjective, but any well argued point of view will be highly appreciated. For example, do dual licensed projects made by commercial entities have success with the open source communities?

• What functional language is most suited to create games with?

  I have had my eye on functional programming languages for a while, but am hesitating to actually get into them. But I think it's about time I at least starting glancing that direction to make sure I'm ready for anything. I've seen talk of Haskell, F#, Scala, and so on. But I have no clue the differences between the languages and their communities, nor do I particularly care; except in the context of game development. So, from a game development standpoint, which functional programming language has the most features suited for game programming? For example, are there any functional game development libraries/engines/frameworks or graphics engines for functional languages? Is there a language that handles certain data structures which are commonly used in game development better? Bottom line: what functional programming language is best for functional game programming, and why? I believe/hope this question will declare a clear best language therefore I haven't marked it CW despite its subjective tendency.

  Last year I started working with a team on our first major web project (We, the Pixels). I believe the idea is very solid, but it has a hard requirement for a group of people being on the site for the randomly scheduled events. We are having problems getting people to come and stay for these events. What is the proper marketing approach needed to bring people to the site for these events? We have recently done the following in an attempt to fix the problem: Added email notification of new events being created Added privileges based on rank Added text throughout the site encouraging setting up the events in the future so other users can have time see that it exists. Gotten involved in with other communities that would find the site interesting in order to promote (market) the site Advertised using Google Adwords Is there an standard marketing approach for such a case as this?

• Preparing For TechEd

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention. • SEO problem for site with 2 domains [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is duplicate content and how can I avoid being penalized for it on my site? I have two domains pointing to the same site. I want both domains to co-exist, they share most of the same content, but they differ in design and they are aimed at different markets / rivaling communities. Is there a way to let google know that these two domains are the same site and don't cause me to get hit with a duplicate content penalty? Any other general SEO tips for this situation would also be welcomed. Thanks. Come on man, why was this closed. The linked page is completely irrelevant for me.
