• How to find date ranges in records with consecutive dates and duplicate data

- by alan s
There's probably any easy solution for this, but I can't see it. I have a table with consecutive dates and often duplicate associated data for several of these consecutive dates: Date Col1 Col2 5/13/2010 1 A 5/14/2010 1 A 5/15/2010 2 B 5/16/2010 1 A 5/17/2010 1 A 5/18/2010 3 C 5/19/2010 3 C 5/20/2010 3 C Using MS T-SQL, I wish to find the start and end dates for each run of distinct Col1 and Col2 values: StartDate EndDate Col1 Col2 5/13/2010 5/14/2010 1 A 5/15/2010 5/15/2010 2 B 5/16/2010 5/17/2010 1 A 5/18/2010 5/20/2010 3 C Assumptions: There are never any missing dates. Col1 and Col2 are not null. Any ideas - preferably that don't use cursors? Many thanks, -alan

• How to make a tooltip appear immediately in Silverlight?

- by Edward Tanguay
In WPF, I get a tooltip to appear immediately like this: TextBlock tb = new TextBlock(); tb.Text = name; ToolTip tt = new ToolTip(); tt.Content = "This is some info on " + name + "."; tb.ToolTip = tt; tt.Cursor = Cursors.Help; ToolTipService.SetInitialShowDelay(tb, 0); This makes the user experience better since if the user wants to look at the tooltips of five items on the page, he doesn't have to wait that long second for each one. But since Silverlight does not have SetInitialShowDelay, what is a workaround to make the tooltip appear immediately?

• how to prevent myControl.g.cs from overwriting with wrong base class

- by Jonny Cundall
I've got two custom cursors for my app, MyCursor and MyOtherCursor, both of which were designed in xaml, and I added some behaviour in the xaml.cs for each of them. This behaviour was the same for both so I had them inherit from a base class to reduce code duplication. public partial class myCursor: CursorBase { public InterchangeCursor() { InitializeComponent(); } } public class CursorBase : UserControl { public virtual void MoveTo(Point pt) { this.SetValue(Canvas.LeftProperty, pt.X); this.SetValue(Canvas.TopProperty, pt.Y); } } my problem is that if I change something in the xaml for MyCursor, the MyCursor.g.cs file is regenerated, and instead of inheriting from CursorBase, the partial class in the g.cs inherits from System.Windows.Controls.UserControl. Since the other side of the partial class in the xaml.cs file still inherits CursorBase, a build error occurs. I'm finding it annoying fixing the g.cs file each time. Does anyone know how to prevent this happening?

• How to move the mouse

- by GroundZero
I'm making a little bot in C#. At the moment it works pretty well, it can load text from a file and type it for you. But for now, I need to manualy click the textfield to put the focus on it, remaximize my form and then click the Type-button. After the typing, I need to manualy slide the scorebar and press submit. I'd like to know how I can move my mouse with C# and if possible, if possible I'd like to load the mouse positions from a xml-file. I need to move to the textfield, click in it to focus on it, start the type script, move to the slider, hold the mouse down on it while dragging, releasing it on the correct position & clicking on the submitbutton This is what I have for now: To load in the variables, I'm using this script: private void Initialize() { XmlTextReader reader = new XmlTextReader(Application.StartupPath + @"..\..\..\CursorPositions.xml"); while (reader.Read()) { switch (reader.NodeType) { case XmlNodeType.Element: // The node is an element. element = reader.Value; break; case XmlNodeType.Text: //Display the text in each element. switch (element) { case "Textbox-X": textX = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; case "Textbox-Y": textY = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; case "SliderBegin-X": sliderX = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; case "SliderBegin-Y": sliderY = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; case "SubmitButton-X": submitX = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; case "SubmitButton-Y": submitY = int.Parse(reader.Value); break; } break; } } This is the xml-file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <CursorPositions> <Textbox-X>430</Textbox-X> <Textbox-Y>270</Textbox-Y> <SliderBegin-X>430</SliderBegin-X> <SliderBegin-Y>470</SliderBegin-Y> <SubmitButton-X>860</SubmitButton-X> <SubmitButton-Y>365</SubmitButton-Y> </CursorPositions> To move the mouse I'm using this piece of code: public partial class FrmMain : Form { [System.Runtime.InteropServices.DllImport("user32.dll")] public static extern void mouse_event(int dwFlags, int dx, int dy, int cButtons, int dwExtraInfo); public const int MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTDOWN = 0x0002; public const int MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTUP = 0x0004; public const int MOUSEEVENTF_RIGHTDOWN = 0x0008; public const int MOUSEEVENTF_RIGHTUP = 0x0010; ... private void btnStart_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // start button (de)activates loop if (!running) { btnStart.Text = "Stop"; btnStart.Cursor = Cursors. No; running = true; } else { btnStart.Text = "Start"; btnStart.Cursor = Cursors.AppStarting; running = false; } while (running) { // move to textbox & type Cursor.Position = new Point(textX, textY); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTDOWN, textX, textY, 0, 0); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTUP, textX, textY, 0, 0); Type(); // wait 90 seconds till slider available Thread.Sleep(90 * 1000); // move to slider & slide according to score Cursor.Position = new Point(sliderX, sliderY); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTDOWN, sliderX, sliderY, 0, 0); Cursor.Position = new Point(sliderX + 345 / 10 * score, sliderY); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTUP, sliderX + 345 / 10 * score, sliderY, 0, 0); // submit Cursor.Position = new Point(submitX, submitY); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTDOWN, submitX, submitY, 0, 0); mouse_event(MOUSEEVENTF_LEFTUP, submitX, submitY, 0, 0); // wait 10 sec to be sure it's submitted Thread.Sleep(10 * 1000); // refresh page SendKeys.SendWait("{F5}"); // get new text NewText(); // wait 10 sec to refresh and load song Thread.Sleep(10 * 1000); } } } PS: I get the coordinates via my form. I've got 2 labels that show my X & Y coordinates. To capture them outside the form, I press and hold my Left Mouse Button and 'drag' it outside the form to the correct place. This way I get the coordinates of my mouse outside the form

• Assign values from same table

- by Reddy S R
I have a database table with parent child relationships between different rows. 1 parent can have any number of children. Children do not have children. I want to copy 'Message' from 'Parent Category' to child categories. CategoryID Name Value Message ParentID DeptId 1 Books 9 Specials 1 2 Music 7 1 3 Paperback 25 1 1 4 PDFs 26 1 2 5 CDs 35 2 1 If that was sample data, Paperback should have Specials as it's Message after the query is run. I have gotten the child rows (the query runs very slow, don't know why), but how do I get the data and assign it to appropriate child rows? --@DeptId = 1 select * from Categories where ParentID in( select CategoryID from Categories where DeptID = @DeptId ) I would like to see a solution that would not use cursors. Thanks

• Changing the cursor in WPF sometimes works, sometimes doesn't

- by Scott
On several of my usercontrols, I change the cursor by using this.Cursor = Cursors.Wait; when I click on something. Now I want to do the same thing on a WPF page on a button click. When I hover over my button, the cursor changes to a hand, but when I click it, it doesn't change to the wait cursor. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that it's a button, or because this is a page and not a usercontrol? This seems like weird behavior.

• Order of declaration in an anonymous pl/sql block

- by RenderIn
I have an anonymous pl/sql block with a procedure declared inside of it as well as a cursor. If I declare the procedure before the cursor it fails. Is there a requirement that cursors be declared prior to procedures? What other rules are there for order of declaration in a pl/sql block? This works: DECLARE cursor cur is select 1 from dual; procedure foo as begin null; end foo; BEGIN null; END; This fails with error PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "CURSOR" when expecting one of the following: begin function package pragma procedure form DECLARE procedure foo as begin null; end foo; cursor cur is select 1 from dual; BEGIN null; END;

• oracle call stored procedure inside select

- by CC
Hi everybody. I'm working on a query (a SELECT) and I need to insert the result of this one in a table. Before doing the insert I have some checking to do, and if all columns are valid, I will do the insert. The checking is done in a stored procedure. The same procedure is used somewhere else too. So I'm thinking using the same procedure to do my checks. The procedure does the checkings and insert the values is all OK. I tryied to call the procedure inside my SELECT but it does not works. SELECT field1, field2, myproc(field1, field2) from MYTABLE. This kind of code does not works. I think it can be done using a cursor, but I would like to avoid the cursors. I'm looking for the easiest solution. Anybody, any idea ? Thanks alot. C.C.

• How to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results?

- by Chris Dutrow
What is a good way to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results? We are cureently using PostgreSQL. A few suggested methods: Paging using Cursors Paging using random numbers ( Add "GREATER THAN ORDER BY " to each query ) Save information to a file and let the client download it Iterate through results, then POST the data to the client server Return only keys to the client, then let the client request the objects from Cloud files like Amazon S3 (still may require paging just to get the file names ). What haven't I thought of that is stupidly simple and way better than any of these options?

• Getting "too many rows" error inside a "for" cursor loop

- by Will
I have a trigger that contains two cursors loops, one nested inside the other like this: FOR outer_rec IN outer_cursor LOOP FOR inner_rec IN inner_cursor LOOP -- Do some calculations END LOOP; END LOOP; Somewhere in this it is throwing the following error: ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows I've been trying to determine where it's coming from for an hour or so.. but should this error never happen? Also.. I am assuming the inner loop automatically closes and opens itself again every time the outer loop goes the next record, i hope this is correct.

• Is there a way to find TOP X records with grouped data?

- by Chris Simmons
I'm working with a Sybase 12.5 server and I have a table defined as such: CREATE TABLE SomeTable( [GroupID] [int] NOT NULL, [DateStamp] [datetime] NOT NULL, [SomeName] varchar(100), PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (GroupID,DateStamp) ) I want to be able to list, per [GroupID], only the latest X records by [DateStamp]. The kicker is X 1, so plain old MAX() won't cut it. I'm assuming there's a wonderfully nasty way to do this with cursors and what-not, but I'm wondering if there is a simpler way without that stuff. I know I'm missing something blatantly obvious and I'm gonna kick myself for not getting it, but .... I'm not getting it. Please help. Is there a way to find TOP X records, but with grouped data?

• How to create a shape acting like a textbox?

- by subho100
Please refer this control http://www.charlespetzold.com/blog/2009/10/Using-Text-Outlines-in-Silverlight.html The formattedtext control is a shape which helps to generate the shape of the text with proper geometry. I would like to make this control act like a text box with cursors and features like typing in from keyboard. Right now I use an invisible text box with a formattedtext control to act like that. But the cursor position always creates a problem when the size of the text is not equal to the size of the rendered text as shape. Can anyone please show the way to achieve this.

• mysqldb python escaping ? or %s?

- by asldkncvas
Dear Everyone, I am currently using mysqldb. What is the correct way to escape strings in mysqldb arguments? Note that E = lambda x: x.encode('utf-8') 1) so my connection is set with charset='utf8'. These are the errors I am getting for these arguments: w1, w2 = u'??', u'??' 1) self.cur.execute("SELECT dist FROM distance WHERE w1=? AND w2=?", (E(w1), E(w2))) ret = self.cur.execute("SELECT dist FROM distance WHERE w1=? AND w2=?", (E(w1), E(w2)) ) File "build/bdist.linux-i686/egg/MySQLdb/cursors.py", line 158, in execute TypeError: not all arguments converted during string formatting 2) self.cur.execute("SELECT dist FROM distance WHERE w1=%s AND w2=%s", (E(w1), E(w2))) This works fine, but when w1 or w2 has \ inside, then the escaping obviously failed. I personally know that %s is not a good method to pass in arguemnts due to injection attacks etc.

• SQL SERVER – Out of the Box – Activty and Performance Reports from SSSMS

- by pinaldave
SQL Server management Studio 2008 is wonderful tool and has many different features. Many times, an average user does not use them as they are not aware about these features. Today, we will learn one such feature. SSMS comes with many inbuilt performance and activity reports, but we do not use it to the full potential. Let us see how we can access these standard reports. Connect to SQL Server Node >> Right Click on it >> Go to Reports >> Click on Standard Reports >> Pick Any Report. Click to Enlarge You can see there are many reports, which an average users needs right away, are available there. Let me list all the reports available. Server Dashboard Configuration Changes History Schema Changes History Scheduler Health Memory Consumption Activity – All Blocking Transactions Activity – All Cursors Activity – All Sessions Activity – Top Sessions Activity – Dormant Sessions Activity - Top Connections Top Transactions by Age Top Transactions by Blocked Transactions Count Top Transactions by Locks Count Performance – Batch Execution Statistics Performance – Object Execution Statistics Performance – Top Queries by Average CPU Time Performance – Top Queries by Average IO Performance – Top Queries by Total CPU Time Performance – Top Queries by Total IO Service Broker Statistics Transactions Log Shipping Status In fact, when you look at the above list, it is fairly clear that they are very thought out and commonly needed reports that are available in SQL Server 2008. Let us run a couple of reports and observe their result. Performance – Top Queries by Total CPU Time Click to Enlarge Memory Consumption Click to Enlarge There are options for custom reports as well, which we can configure. We will learn about them in some other post. Additionally, you can right click on the reports and export in Excel or PDF. I think this tool can really help those who are just looking for some quick details. Does any of you use this feature, or this feature has some limitations and You would like to see more features? • Plan Operator Tuesday round-up

- by Rob Farley
Eighteen posts for T-SQL Tuesday #43 this month, discussing Plan Operators. I put them together and made the following clickable plan. It’s 1000px wide, so I hope you have a monitor wide enough. Let me explain this plan for you (people’s names are the links to the articles on their blogs – the same links as in the plan above). It was clearly a SELECT statement. Wayne Sheffield (@dbawayne) wrote about that, so we start with a SELECT physical operator, leveraging the logical operator Wayne Sheffield. The SELECT operator calls the Paul White operator, discussed by Jason Brimhall (@sqlrnnr) in his post. The Paul White operator is quite remarkable, and can consume three streams of data. Let’s look at those streams. The first pulls data from a Table Scan – Boris Hristov (@borishristov)’s post – using parallel threads (Bradley Ball – @sqlballs) that pull the data eagerly through a Table Spool (Oliver Asmus – @oliverasmus). A scalar operation is also performed on it, thanks to Jeffrey Verheul (@devjef)’s Compute Scalar operator. The second stream of data applies Evil (I figured that must mean a procedural TVF, but could’ve been anything), courtesy of Jason Strate (@stratesql). It performs this Evil on the merging of parallel streams (Steve Jones – @way0utwest), which suck data out of a Switch (Paul White – @sql_kiwi). This Switch operator is consuming data from up to four lookups, thanks to Kalen Delaney (@sqlqueen), Rick Krueger (@dataogre), Mickey Stuewe (@sqlmickey) and Kathi Kellenberger (@auntkathi). Unfortunately Kathi’s name is a bit long and has been truncated, just like in real plans. The last stream performs a join of two others via a Nested Loop (Matan Yungman – @matanyungman). One pulls data from a Spool (my post – @rob_farley) populated from a Table Scan (Jon Morisi). The other applies a catchall operator (the catchall is because Tamera Clark (@tameraclark) didn’t specify any particular operator, and a catchall is what gets shown when SSMS doesn’t know what to show. Surprisingly, it’s showing the yellow one, which is about cursors. Hopefully that’s not what Tamera planned, but anyway...) to the output from an Index Seek operator (Sebastian Meine – @sqlity). Lastly, I think everyone put in 110% effort, so that’s what all the operators cost. That didn’t leave anything for me, unfortunately, but that’s okay. Also, because he decided to use the Paul White operator, Jason Brimhall gets 0%, and his 110% was given to Paul’s Switch operator post. I hope you’ve enjoyed this T-SQL Tuesday, and have learned something extra about Plan Operators. Keep your eye out for next month’s one by watching the Twitter Hashtag #tsql2sday, and why not contribute a post to the party? Big thanks to Adam Machanic as usual for starting all this. @rob_farley

• The Red Gate Guide to SQL Server Team based Development Free e-book

- by Mladen Prajdic
After about 6 months of work, the new book I've coauthored with Grant Fritchey (Blog|Twitter), Phil Factor (Blog|Twitter) and Alex Kuznetsov (Blog|Twitter) is out. They're all smart folks I talk to online and this book is packed with good ideas backed by years of experience. The book contains a good deal of information about things you need to think of when doing any kind of multi person database development. Although it's meant for SQL Server, the principles can be applied to any database platform out there. In the book you will find information on: writing readable code, documenting code, source control and change management, deploying code between environments, unit testing, reusing code, searching and refactoring your code base. I've written chapter 5 about Database testing and chapter 11 about SQL Refactoring. In the database testing chapter (chapter 5) I cover why you should test your database, why it is a good idea to have a database access interface composed of stored procedures, views and user defined functions, what and how to test. I talk about how there are many testing methods like black and white box testing, unit and integration testing, error and stress testing and why and how you should do all those. Sometimes you have to convince management to go for testing in the development lifecycle so I give some pointers and tips how to do that. Testing databases is a bit different from testing object oriented code in a way that to have independent unit tests you need to rollback your code after each test. The chapter shows you ways to do this and also how to avoid it. At the end I show how to test various database objects and how to test access to them. In the SQL Refactoring chapter (chapter 11) I cover why refactor and where to even begin refactoring. I also who you a way to achieve a set based mindset to solve SQL problems which is crucial to good SQL set based programming and a few commonly seen problems to refactor. These problems include: using functions on columns in the where clause, SELECT * problems, long stored procedure with many input parameters, one subquery per condition in the select statement, cursors are good for anything problem, using too large data types everywhere and using your data in code for business logic anti-pattern. You can read more about it and download it here: The Red Gate Guide to SQL Server Team-based Development Hope you like it and send me feedback if you wish too.

• Alternatives for comparing data from different databases

- by Alex
I have two huge tables on separate databases. One of them has the information of all the SMS that passed through the company's servers while the other one has the information of the actual billing of those SMS. My job is to compare samples of both of these tables (for example, the records between 1 and 2 pm) to see if there are any differences: SMS that were sent but not charged to the user for whatever reason that may be happening. The columns I will be using to compare are the remitent's phone number and the exact date the SMS was sent. An issue here is that dates usually are the same on both sides, but in many cases differ by 1 or 2 seconds. I have, so far, two alternatives to do this: (PL/SQL) Create two tables where i'm going to temporarily store all the records of that 1hour sample. One for each of the main tables. Then, for each distinct phone number, select the time of every SMS sent from that phone from both my temporary tables and start comparing one by one using cursors. In this case, the procedure would be ran on the server where one of the sources is so the contents of the other one would be looked up using a dblink. (sqlplus + c++) Instead of storing the 1hour samples in new tables, output the query to a text file. I will have two text files, one for each source. Then, open the first file and load all of it's content on a hash_map (key-value) using c++, where the key will be the phone number and the value a list of times of SMS sent from that phone. Finally, open the second file, grab each line (in this format: numberX timeX), look for numberX's entry on the hash_map (wich will be a list of times) and then check if timeX is on that list. If it isn't, save it somewhere to finally store it on a "uncharged" table (this would also be the final step on case 1) My main concern is efficiency. These samples have about 2 million records on each source, so just grabbing one record on one side and looking it up on the other would not be possible. That's the reason I wanted to use hash_maps Which do you think is a better option?

• SQL Server becomes slow after restart

- by Tobi DM
I already posted this one on stackoverflow but someone gave me the hint to that I might have more luck on serverfault. We use SQL Server 2005 on an Windwos Server 2008. Ther Server has 48 GB RAM. SQL Server is configured to use 40 GB RAM. There is only one database hosted (About 70 GB). The only app beside SQL Server is our App-Server which connects the clients to the database. Now we encounter the following problem: After a restart of the server our the performance is great. The server grabs the 40 GB RAM wich it is allowed to and then runs fast as hell. But after about 4 weeks the system becomes slower and slower. The execution of statements (seen in the profiler) is raising slowly. But I cannot see that there is something going wrong on the server. CPU usage is at about 20% I/O also seems to be no Problem The process monitor does also not show that there are strange apps or something like that. Eventlog does also have no interessting messages No open transactions or blockings to see We do not use cursors in our app We tried already the following things without effect: Droped the cache by using the statements DBCC FreeProcCache DBCC FREESYSTEMCACHE('ALL') DBCC DropCleanbuffers Restarted the Appserver we are using. Restart the sql server service But nothing did help exept restarting the whole server. Any ideas?

• Can't start Windows 7 after cloning HDD

- by Paul
Brief description: cloned HDD1 - HDD2 HDD1 partition 1 boots HDD1 partition 2 boots HDD2 partition 1 boots HDD2 partition 2 doesn't boot Windows, but is bootable in general Now verbosely: In all the cases computer is the same. I have two Windows 7 installations on HDD1 - both are booting fine. I choose between them using standard Windows 7 boot loader menu. Technically there are 4 partitions: 100 MB Boot loader partition (active), Windows 7 copy 1 (25 GB), Windows 7 copy 2 (150 GB) and Working partition. All are primary. In past few days I tried to clone the whole HDD1 to HDD2 of the same size (but 2,5 inch form factor) as is using Minitool Partition wizard. Everything has been copied, all files are accessible, no faults in file system structure, even boot loader wasn't damaged and I hadn't to repair it. But I can boot only first installation of Windows 7 (it boots without issues). When I choose the second installation, I get immediately a completely black screen without any texts, cursors and other data. HDD isn't accessed after that. This black screen is sensitive to Ctrl-Alt-Delete which causes computer reboot. I did some experimenting: Installed Windows 7 to that partition - it booted fine. Then I renamed "Windows" to "Windows.old" and copied Windows directory from HDD1 as it was, using Far Manager, and got the same troubles - black screen. (Of course I performed renaming and copying from other copy of Windows). So, it seems that problems are inside this installation of Windows, somewhere in its files.

• Windows xp blinking under score after bios

- by heyjoe
so this is for an older pc I have to repair for a friend. The pc has an hdd of about 60 something gb, It uses win xp and let's say 60-70% of the boots it hangs on showing only an underscore bilking line after bios screen, rest of the times it boots fine or the computer shuts down on xp loading screen. Sometimes if you let it alone while the underscore is blinking, it will boot after a while, like a few minutes, some times it won't boot at all even if you give him more time, like one hour. When it boots successfully the pc seems to work fine. I think it's a bad hard disk and i'm about to suggest buying a new one and switching it but I don't have enough experience and i would hate making him buy a new hdd and not solving the problem. anyone has any tips? I know there are other topics about blinking underscores or cursors while xp is booting but the issues about the pc shutting itself down or sometimes booting really freaks me out. Can't format everything and re install until about 10 days from now, cause the dude has some program for his business on this pc and I have to migrate it when the next computer arrives, however he needs to use it until then. so please advise, thx.

• You Might Be a DBA

• T-SQL Tuesday #025 – CHECK Constraint Tricks

- by Most Valuable Yak (Rob Volk)
Allen White (blog | twitter), marathoner, SQL Server MVP and presenter, and all-around awesome author is hosting this month's T-SQL Tuesday on sharing SQL Server Tips and Tricks. And for those of you who have attended my Revenge: The SQL presentation, you know that I have 1 or 2 of them. You'll also know that I don't recommend using anything I talk about in a production system, and will continue that advice here…although you might be sorely tempted. Suffice it to say I'm not using these examples myself, but I think they're worth sharing anyway. Some of you have seen or read about SQL Server constraints and have applied them to your table designs…unless you're a vendor ;)…and may even use CHECK constraints to limit numeric values, or length of strings, allowable characters and such. CHECK constraints can, however, do more than that, and can even provide enhanced security and other restrictions. One tip or trick that I didn't cover very well in the presentation is using constraints to do unusual things; specifically, limiting or preventing inserts into tables. The idea was to use a CHECK constraint in a way that didn't depend on the actual data: -- create a table that cannot accept data CREATE TABLE dbo.JustTryIt(a BIT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, CONSTRAINT chk_no_insert CHECK (GETDATE()=GETDATE()+1)) INSERT dbo.JustTryIt VALUES(1) I'll let you run that yourself, but I'm sure you'll see that this is a pretty stupid table to have, since the CHECK condition will always be false, and therefore will prevent any data from ever being inserted. I can't remember why I used this example but it was for some vague and esoteric purpose that applies to about, maybe, zero people. I come up with a lot of examples like that. However, if you realize that these CHECKs are not limited to column references, and if you explore the SQL Server function list, you could come up with a few that might be useful. I'll let the names describe what they do instead of explaining them all: CREATE TABLE NoSA(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_No_sa CHECK (SUSER_SNAME()<>'sa')) CREATE TABLE NoSysAdmin(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_No_sysadmin CHECK (IS_SRVROLEMEMBER('sysadmin')=0)) CREATE TABLE NoAdHoc(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_No_AdHoc CHECK (OBJECT_NAME(@@PROCID) IS NOT NULL)) CREATE TABLE NoAdHoc2(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_No_AdHoc2 CHECK (@@NESTLEVEL>0)) CREATE TABLE NoCursors(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_No_Cursors CHECK (@@CURSOR_ROWS=0)) CREATE TABLE ANSI_PADDING_ON(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_ANSI_PADDING_ON CHECK (@@OPTIONS & 16=16)) CREATE TABLE TimeOfDay(a int not null, CONSTRAINT CHK_TimeOfDay CHECK (DATEPART(hour,GETDATE()) BETWEEN 0 AND 1)) GO -- log in as sa or a sysadmin server role member, and try this: INSERT NoSA VALUES(1) INSERT NoSysAdmin VALUES(1) -- note the difference when using sa vs. non-sa -- then try it again with a non-sysadmin login -- see if this works: INSERT NoAdHoc VALUES(1) INSERT NoAdHoc2 VALUES(1) GO -- then try this: CREATE PROCEDURE NotAdHoc @val1 int, @val2 int AS SET NOCOUNT ON; INSERT NoAdHoc VALUES(@val1) INSERT NoAdHoc2 VALUES(@val2) GO EXEC NotAdHoc 2,2 -- which values got inserted? SELECT * FROM NoAdHoc SELECT * FROM NoAdHoc2 -- and this one just makes me happy :) INSERT NoCursors VALUES(1) DECLARE curs CURSOR FOR SELECT 1 OPEN curs INSERT NoCursors VALUES(2) CLOSE curs DEALLOCATE curs INSERT NoCursors VALUES(3) SELECT * FROM NoCursors I'll leave the ANSI_PADDING_ON and TimeOfDay tables for you to test on your own, I think you get the idea. (Also take a look at the NoCursors example, notice anything interesting?) The real eye-opener, for me anyway, is the ability to limit bad coding practices like cursors, ad-hoc SQL, and sa use/abuse by using declarative SQL objects. I'm sure you can see how and why this would come up when discussing Revenge: The SQL.;) And the best part IMHO is that these work on pretty much any version of SQL Server, without needing Policy Based Management, DDL/login triggers, or similar tools to enforce best practices. All seriousness aside, I highly recommend that you spend some time letting your mind go wild with the possibilities and see how far you can take things. There are no rules! (Hmmmm, what can I do with rules?) #TSQL2sDay

• How to make Ubuntu recognize an unknown external display (so I can adjust its resolution)?

- by WagnerAA
I have a Dell laptop with an external monitor attached (a Samsumg SyncMaster 931c). My laptop display was recognized, and I can adjust its optimum resolution. My external display is still unknown, thus I'm stuck at a lower resolution (1024x768): I tried the "Detect Displays" button, but it didn't work, nothing happens. I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. Things were working before. I don't know if I can actually change this configuration, or if this is a bug. I searched for an answer here and also in Launchpad's website, but found none. I even tried to install Nvidia drivers, and just messed things up. It seems I wasn't even using nvidia before, as I guessed by looking at my additional drivers configuration: My laptop has an Intel chipset, I guess: $ dpkg --get-selections | grep -i -e nvidia -e intel intel-gpu-tools install libdrm-intel1:amd64 install libdrm-intel1:i386 install nvidia-common install xserver-xorg-video-intel install I don't have an xorg.conf file (I think this is nvidia related, am I right?): $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory $ ls -l /etc/X11/ total 76 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Out 19 23:41 app-defaults drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Abr 25 2012 cursors -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18 Abr 25 2012 default-display-manager drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Abr 25 2012 fonts -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17394 Dez 3 2009 rgb.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Mai 1 03:33 X -> /usr/bin/Xorg drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Out 19 23:41 xinit drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 23 2012 xkb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Out 24 08:55 xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 709 Abr 1 2010 Xreset drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Out 19 10:08 Xreset.d drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Out 19 10:08 Xresources -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3730 Jan 20 2012 Xsession drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Out 20 00:11 Xsession.d -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 265 Jul 1 2008 Xsession.options -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13 Ago 15 06:43 XvMCConfig -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 601 Abr 25 2012 Xwrapper.config Here is some information I gathered by looking at other related posts: $ sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a *-display:0 description: VGA compatible controller product: Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 07 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:48 memory:f6800000-f6bfffff memory:d0000000-dfffffff ioport:1800(size=8) *-display:1 UNCLAIMED description: Display controller product: Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2.1 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.1 version: 07 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f6100000-f61fffff LSB Version: core-2.0-amd64:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-amd64:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-amd64:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-amd64:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch:cxx-3.0-amd64:cxx-3.0-noarch:cxx-3.1-amd64:cxx-3.1-noarch:cxx-3.2-amd64:cxx-3.2-noarch:cxx-4.0-amd64:cxx-4.0-noarch:desktop-3.1-amd64:desktop-3.1-noarch:desktop-3.2-amd64:desktop-3.2-noarch:desktop-4.0-amd64:desktop-4.0-noarch:graphics-2.0-amd64:graphics-2.0-noarch:graphics-3.0-amd64:graphics-3.0-noarch:graphics-3.1-amd64:graphics-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.2-amd64:graphics-3.2-noarch:graphics-4.0-amd64:graphics-4.0-noarch:printing-3.2-amd64:printing-3.2-noarch:printing-4.0-amd64:printing-4.0-noarch:qt4-3.1-amd64:qt4-3.1-noarch Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 12.10 Release: 12.10 Codename: quantal Linux Batcave 3.5.0-17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:31:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2304 x 800, maximum 32767 x 32767 LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x 1790mm 1280x800 59.9*+ 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 connected 1024x768+1280+32 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x600 60.3 56.2 848x480 60.0 640x480 59.9 DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) If there's anything else I can do, any other information I can post here, to help me configure this external display, please let me know. • Android threading and database locking

- by Sena Gbeckor-Kove
Hi, We are using AsyncTasks to access database tables and cursors. Unfortunately we are seeing occasional exceptions regarding the database being locked. E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): Couldn't open iviewnews.db for writing (will try read-only): E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: database is locked E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.native_setLocale(Native Method) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.setLocale(SQLiteDatabase.java:1637) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.<init>(SQLiteDatabase.java:1587) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:638) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openOrCreateDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:659) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.openOrCreateDatabase(SQLiteDatabase.java:652) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.app.ApplicationContext.openOrCreateDatabase(ApplicationContext.java:482) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.content.ContextWrapper.openOrCreateDatabase(ContextWrapper.java:193) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteOpenHelper.getWritableDatabase(SQLiteOpenHelper.java:98) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteOpenHelper.getReadableDatabase(SQLiteOpenHelper.java:158) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at com.iview.android.widget.IViewNewsTopStoryWidget.initData(IViewNewsTopStoryWidget.java:73) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at com.iview.android.widget.IViewNewsTopStoryWidget.updateNewsWidgets(IViewNewsTopStoryWidget.java:121) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at com.iview.android.async.GetNewsTask.doInBackground(GetNewsTask.java:338) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at com.iview.android.async.GetNewsTask.doInBackground(GetNewsTask.java:1) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at android.os.AsyncTask$2.call(AsyncTask.java:185) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask$Sync.innerRun(FutureTask.java:256) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask.run(FutureTask.java:122) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.runTask(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:648) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:673) E/SQLiteOpenHelper(15963): at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:1060) Does anybody have a general example for code which writes to a database from a different thread than the one reading and how can we ensure thread safety. One suggestion I've had is to use a ContentProvider, as this would handle the access of the database from multiple threads. I am going to look at this, but is this the recommended method of handling such a problem? It seems rather heavyweight considering we're talking about in front or behind Thanks in advance.
