• Group Policy processing and autologon on Windows 7

  I'm trying to accomplish a few things via Group Policy on Windows 7. Software Installation, map drives, map printer, etc. I've got these computers set to autologon. The problem I'm running into is that the computers logon before DHCP has done its thing. Therefore, they don't apply any group policies properly. How do I fix this? I've already set a policy to "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon". I've read up a bit and this doesn't actually mean that it waits for DHCP. So it's a little pointless. Anything that would delay logon would work. Or if I can somehow make the computer wait for DHCP.

• Group policy preventing XenApp from creating start menu menus

  I have a citrix Xenapp server that has some apps installed. The are placed in a folder and set to populate the start menu. The problem is when I log on with a user from a particular OU I am unable to get the start menu inserted from xenapp. It is quite a restrictive group policy but does anyone know the setting for preventing users from modifying the start menu. I have tried "Prevent changes to Taskbar and Start Menu Settings" but this didnt work. Any ideas would be great. I know it isnt permissions because I have another user that has the same permissions assigned to them, the only difference is that one user gets the restrictive group policy and the other doesnt.   Where I work, the admins just migrated us to Windows 7. They gave me admin rights but still, I had to "Run as Administrator" my Google Chrome installation. After I managed to install it, I realized I even have to go through the "Run as Administrator" shortcut every time I have to execute the application. I even edited the properties of the shortcut to check "Always run as Administrator" but nothing changed. The message I get when I'm trying to launch Chrome is "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information contact your system administrator"... Is it something I could work out alone or I have to convince them to change the "policy"?

  Using Windows 7 Professional I need to get access to the Folder Options screen. At work we primarily use Windows XP and are connected to a domain. Through Group Policy we disable access to the Folder Options. We use a tool called KillPol that temporarily removes Group Policy and let's me access the screen. This tool doesn't work on Windows 7 and I can't find a replacement. Any ideas on how I can get access to the Folder Options screen in Windows 7 when it is disabled through GP?

• Group Policy for Setting Passwords: Server 2003 Domain

  In my 2003 domain, I am being requested to set a password policy to require passwords to expire every 4 months, and also require users to change their password on their next login, due to a security issue. In my domain, my OU's are setup by location, then drilled down to city, then the users and computers are in separate sub-domains. My question is, how do I set this up for my domain? Will I need to set the policy up for loop back? Can I configure this for just a specific OU? Any suggestions on how to move forward? Any advise is much appreciated, and thanks in advance!

• Group policy reset upon restart?

  Is it possible for a group policy to revert back to its original state upon server restart? Our servers are hosted as a Virtual Machine on the rack. We had to restart our server for some reason and all of a sudden we cannot remote desktop into the server any more. Pinging the server succeeds but RDPing into it fails. My assumption is that the group policy has reverted back preventing any remote desktop connections from taking place. Is that a possibility? Since the network is managed by another group, we don't have the authority to physically look into what's going on with this particular VM. Can somebody suggest some ideas? Thanks

• Folder redirect policy does not apply to one user

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2, my station runs Windows 7. while defining folder redirection policy (and others) I find that the redirection does not apply (or appear) in rsop.msc checkout. First thing I've checked is restrictions on the folders where the My Documents folder will be redirected to, I have set full rights for my user on those folders (on the server), and yet I get no actual result. Eventually I decided to add my specific user to the scope under the Folder Redirection policy, and well - still nothing... Would love some clue about what can be wrong.

• Manager keeps changing requirement specification after every demo.

  Background of my working environment My manager has no background or understanding of computers or software whatsoever. It is highly likely he hasn't seen code in any form (not even from a physical distance of 10 feet or less) in his life. There is no one who understands the complexity of what I am asked to implement. To the point that if I semi-hardcode no one would know. On Joel's test we score an unbelievable score 0. The problems The manager and at times other "senior" keep changing the requirement specification. Changes which, if good engineering be done and not patchy "fixes", require change in the underlying design. There is absolutely no one who looks at code (probably because no one knows how to, or even if it should be done) which means no one will ever be able to: Appreciate the complexity of the problem or the elegance of the solution. Suggest improvement to the approach. Appreciate the quality of the code. Point out where the code can be improved. A lot of jargon is used which makes sense grammatically but fails to make any sense any other way. Doesn't feel, behave or work like a software company. The question What should be done? Especially regarding there being no one who would point out improvements in my code. Update To answer HLGEM's (and possibly others) question about what I've done to try and fix it. I offered to set up Redmine and introduce source control to everyone. I said I would recommend distributed (git or mercurial) but will also talk about centralized ones and let the team decide. Response was that things are being done and will be done within weeks. Haven't seen that nor am I aware if other parts of the company use it.

I have searched for and found similar cases (relating to ubuntu 12.10), but most of those cases involved ppa's, and I don't use any ppa's. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I'd like to connect to a wireless access point from the command-line. ideally, I'd only need the name of the AP. But the hardware-address would work as well. I know I can use nmcli to connect to a managed network connection, but in my case, the access point may not be configured for Network-Manager yet (See the difference between the output of nm-tool and nmcli con). • Reverse WiFi to Broadcast connection coming from a USB device

  I am using the app called Clockworkmod Tether. It connects using a script ( command line " gksu ./run.sh " ) on the computer. All my programs connect to the internet perfectly, minitube, midori, transmission torrents. But the network manager does not show any connection, wired or wireless. So this may cause issues? What I want to do is take this connection, and be able to share it some way, any way, by wireless. This Acer Timeline "Aspire 5810TZ" does have an Ethernet, so wired out to a router might be an option. But I would prefer to simply reverse the Wireless card to broadcast out to about 2 or 3 devices. Is this possible? Yes I have taken a look at the other questions already posted here, but the answers are 1 year old or older, and not clear at all. I am moderately comfortable (4.5 out of 10 ) on the command line. But pretty much need line by line directions for what commands are needed and what order, ect. Edit I have already tried the method of "Left click network manager, Create New Wireless Network" It is created fine, and I am able to connect to it with a tablet, but am un-able to get an outside connection with it. Using the "Shared to other computers" option because DHCP doesn't seem to work, and WEP Passphrase Security. I get an IP address on the connected device. But as I said, won't bring up any outside webpages or the like. So perhaps this is the wrong approach?

• Oracle Tutor: Installing Is Not Implementing or Why CIO's should care about End User Adoption

  Eighteen months ago I showed Tutor and UPK Productive Day One overview to a CIO friend of mine. He works in a manufacturing business which had been recently purchased by a global conglomerate. He had a major implementation coming up, but said that the corporate team would be coming in to handle the project. I asked about their end user training approach, but it was unclear to him at the time. We were in touch over the course of the implementation project. The major activities were data conversion, how-to workshops, General Ledger realignment, and report definition. The message was "Here's how we do it at corporate, and here's how you are going to do it." In short, it was an application software installation. The corporate team had experience and confidence and the effort through go-live was smooth. Some weeks after cutover, problems with customer orders began to surface. Orders could not be fulfilled in a timely fashion. The problem got worse, and the corporate emergency team was called in. After many days of analysis, the issue was tracked down and resolved, but by then there were weeks of backorders, and their customer base was impacted in a significant way. It took three months of constant handholding of customers by the sales force for good will to be reestablished, and this itself diminished a new product sales push. I learned of these results in a recent conversation with the CIO. I asked him what the solution to the problem was, and he replied that it was twofold. The first component was a lack of understanding by customer service reps about how a particular data item in order entry was to be filled in, resulting in discrepant order data. The second component was that product planners were using this data, along with data from other sources, to fill in a spreadsheet based on the abandoned system. This spreadsheet was the primary input for planning data. The result of these two inaccuracies was that key parts were not being ordered to effectively meet demand and the lead time for finished goods was pushed out by weeks. I reminded him about the Productive Day One approach, and it's focus on methodology and tools for end user training. A more collaborative solution workshop would have identified proper applications use in the new environment. Using UPK to document correct transaction entry would have provided effective guidelines to the CSRs for data entry. Using Oracle Tutor to document the manual tasks would have eliminated the use of an out of date spreadsheet. As we talked this over, he said, "I wish I knew when I started what I know now." Effective end user adoption is the most critical and most overlooked success factor in applications implementations. When the switch is thrown at go-live, employees need to know how to use the new systems to do their jobs. Their jobs are made up of manual steps and systems steps which must be performed in the right order for the implementing organization to operate smoothly. Use Tutor to document the manual policies and procedures, use UPK to document the systems tasks, and develop this documentation in conjunction with a solution workshop. • Mouse takes a while to start working after boot

  I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) and a number of my USB devices have stopped working. At least, they don't work for the first 3-5 minutes. I have two mice (one wireless, one wired) and a camera, which seem to take Ubuntu 3-5 minutes to recognize after booting up.   Is there any boot manager editor that I can run in DOS (possibly) before the system will load and edit boot manager itself? I would like to delete, edit VHD's and other files, copying them from the network, changing the names and adding to the manager)? Are there any other boot managers that I can use to boot up Windows 7 and 2008 from VHD file? I would like to have flexibility similar to virtualization w/o performance hit and ability to use all 4 processors on the server (using Windows HPC Server).

• How can I prioritize wireless networks with network-manager

  Mostly I use my laptop in an environment where different wireless networks are available and I would like to preferably connect to one of those and only fall back to the other one if that one is not available. Is there any way of prioritizing which wireless networks network-manager preferably connects to? The only workaround I found so far was unchecking Connect Automatically in the options and re-enabling it when my preferred network is not available.

• update manager has killed wifi after i finally got it working [closed]

  HI i had just got my wifi to work properly in 12.04 and I got a pop up from update manager saying there was 100's of updates I needed to install so i installed them it then said I needed to reboot which I did but now my wifi isn't working I go add a new connection and I have no wifi option just Ethernet also the pci card is showing no signs of life (the green light is not light) but when i go in to terminal and type lspci it is showing my wifi card in the list whats gone wrong and how do i fix it???
