• How should I sort images in an isometric game so that they appear in the correct order?

  Hi! This seems like a rather simple problem but I am having a lot of difficulty with it. What should I do to properly sort images in an isometric game? In a normal 2d top-down game one could use the screen y axis to sort the images. In this example the trees are properly sorted but the isometric walls are not. Example image: sorted by screen y Wall2 is one pixel below wall1 therefore it is drawn after wall1. If I sort by the isometric y axis the walls appear in the correct order but the trees do not. • webmaster tools 500 crawl error for asp faceted navigation that does not exist

  i am getting 2,500 type 500 url errors in google webmaster tools. These pages are faceted navigation results that can not be reached by a site visitor. These pages do not exist. We are using faceted navigation with the Volusion platform (asp.net, I think). I have specified url parameters in webmaster tools so that google will not try to index anything faceted. This does not stop the errors from generating. I am concerned about how this might effect seo (bleeding page rank). I can provide additional information if needed. I am not sure how to solve this. I have started down the path of creating 301's, but having some difficulty there as well.

• Declaring interface in the same file as the base class, is it a good practice?

  To be interchangable and testable, normally services with logic needs to have interface, e.g. public class FooService: IFooService { ... } Design-wise, I agree with this, but one of the things that bothers me with this approach is that for one service you will need to declare two things (the class and the interface), and in our team, normally two files (one for the class and one for the interface). Another discomfort is the difficulty in navigation because using "Go to definition" in IDE (VS2010) will point to the interface (since other classes refer to the interface), not the actual class. I was thinking that writing IFooService in the same file as FooService will reduce the above weirdness. After all, IFooService and FooService are very related. Is this a good practice? Is there a good reason that IFooService must be located in its own file?

• How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

  I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

• Handling & processing credit card payments

  I'm working on program that charges customers on a pay as you go per month modal. This means that instead of the customers paying their invoices at the start of the month, they will have to pay at the end of the month. In order to secure the payments I want my customers credit card information stored so that they can be charged automatically at the end of the month. I do not have the resources, time, or risk to handle and store my customers credit card information on my servers and am looking for a third party solution. I'm a tad overwhelmed by all the different options and services that are out there and was wondering if anyone with experience have any recommendations and tips. I'm having difficulty finding services that allow me to to store my customers credit card information and charge them automatically. Most of them seem to offer an invoice styled approach.

• Having tried differen ways but none worked - How do I disable a service from auto-start at boot in Ubuntu?

  This really doesn't make sense. I've been using many other distros and never had such difficulty managing autostart services. I found three ways of disabling autostart services, and none of them works for me: update-rc.d -f service_name remove chkconfig --level 12345 service_name off sysv-rc-conf I tried all the three ways to disable mysql daemon, mongo daemon, redis server, cups daemon, yet all of the utilities confirmed that the daemons are disabled, yet they still automatically start on boot. Please suggest the most correct way to disable services from auto-start at boot. Thank you! btw, it's running 12.04

  ive been trying to install the unity player that supports battlestar gallactica online at big point.com /but then it is saying that my system (ubuntu) is not supported isnt there a patch by now because the game has been on for years now and there has been many people that i know running ubuntu who has the same difficulty ! also is there another program that would work with ubuntu and battlestar gallactica online?? there has to be a fix or ill just have to uninstall ubuntu/which is my next question how do i do that ??where is the control panel that allows you to uninstall programs within ubunty thank you very much for any support or advice [email protected]

• Copying an SSH Public Key to a Server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?

In our setting (sketched below) we have 2 data sources, where data source A is the primary source for items of type Foo. A secondary data source exists which can be used to retrieve additional information on a Foo; however this information does not always exist. Furthermore, data source A can be used to retrieve items of type Bar. However, each Bar refers to a Foo. The difficulty here is that each Bar should refer to a Foo which, if available, also contains the information as augmented by data source B. My question is: how to remove the tight coupling between data source A and B?

• When designing a job queue, what should determine the scope of a job?

  We've got a job queue system that'll cheerfully process any kind of job given to it. We intend to use it to process jobs that each contain 2 tasks: Job (Pass information from one server to another) Fetch task (get the data, slowly) Send task (send the data, comparatively quickly) The difficulty we're having is that we don't know whether to break the tasks into separate jobs, or process the job in one go.   Hello I do not have internet connection at my home. So i use "apt-get --print-uris" to list the http's and take it to other PC with internet connection and use wget to download them. I am facing difficulty about how to list the http's that amarok will download from for the extra functionality (like mp3 codecs). KDE deamon is showing me that these packages are needed for extra functionality of amarok but i don't know how to list their http's. "apt-get --print-uris upgrade" does not list http's need for amarok/reqonk.

• Wireless connect- Webcam activation- MBR repair/rebuild

  Evening: I've NEVER had so much difficulty with Ubuntu. I got "Ubuntu Made Easy" and couldn't believe it hasn't done a damn thing to help solve the problems!!! #1. Since install of 12.04 I haven't been able to connect to wireless. Have done everything I can find/think of. Laptop indicates it's receiving wireless. Ran all updates, restricted extras, etc. NOTHING!! Tried to find how to activate built-in webcam (it worked when I installed O.S.) NOTHING; tried to find MBR repair/rebuild terminal command.. NOTHING!!! The book has has been useless, so far!! I really have to solve these problems, otherwise laptop and UBUNTU are worthless!!!   How to interact with colleague who will happily talk about a thing, but from the way he talk about it, it becomes clear, that he does not fully understand some underlying concepts - but at the same time is not that kind of personality, that would ask for clarification or explanation (maybe because it is sign of weakness). There is difficulty involved in such a situation, since such people will demand to be consulted in a decision process, but instead of brainstorming solutions one will need to neutralize the diffusion of the concepts first, and when this is done time is already up and solution cannot be brainstormed any more. Maybe FUD is not the correct acronym, maybe DIS, Diffusion, Indifference, Surety.

• Software requirements for replicating a Windows application

  I developed an application using Windows Form in C++ (IDE MSVC 2010). Some part of application also has MFC, and OpenCv. I want to send the application to my cleint for interim testing on his own machine. I have not developed any installer for the same, and so I will be sending him the.EXE file. I want that the client should not face any difficulty in replicating the experiment, and thus saves his time. Can somebody suggest me what all softwares(such as, MSVC, .NET Framework, Windows SDK etc) should already be installed on the client's machine for successfull testing of the application? Note: OS (Windows 7) and hardware is exactly same at both sides.

• Images Loading Very Slowly

  I'm currently working on optimizing my site to try to decrease load time by using Pingdom tools. I seem to be having some difficulty with long load times on images. For example, the body background for my site is a 29kb file but takes almost 500 ms to load, the majority of which is spent connecting to the server. This one seems to take the longest times but other images seem to take a lot of time as well—the majority of which seems to be spent connecting to the server. This also seems to fluctuate as I've seen the same image load in 500ms one minute and ten minutes later load in 1.5 seconds. My site is using the Modx CMS but I'm not sure if that would affect this at all. Is it more likely that this is a server issue? Is there anything that I should check or do to help alleviate these inflated 'connect' times?

• What are some good, simple examples for queues?

  I'm teaching CS2 (Java and data structures), and am having some difficulty coming up with good examples to use when teaching queues. The two major applications I use them for are multithreaded message passing (but MT programming is out of scope for the course), and BFS-style algorithms (and I won't be covering graphs until later in the term). I also want to avoid contrived examples. Most things that I think of, if I were actually going to solve them in a single-threaded fashion I would just use a list rather than a queue. I tend to only use queues when processing and discovery are interleaved (e.g. search), or in other special cases like length-limited buffers (e.g. maintaining last N items). To the extent practical, I am trying to teach my students good ways to actually do things in real programs, not just toys to show off a feature. Any suggestions of good, simple algorithms or applications of queues that I can use as examples but that require a minimum of other prior knowledge?

This trivial sounding problem was made famous by Jon Bentley in his Programming Pearls where he uses it to demonstrate algorithm design techniques. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the FizzBuzz (or HoppityHop) test and 10 being implement the C stdlib function malloc(), how would you rank the above problem? I think the people who can best answer this question are those who have read Programming Pearls and have tried to solve this problem on their own. • How do you deal with the details when reading code?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?

• Balancing Player vs. Monsters: Level-Up Curves

  I've written a fair number of games that have RPG-like "levelling up," where the player gains experience for killing monsters/enemies, and eventually, reaches a new level, where their stats increase. How do you find a balance between player growth, monster strength, and difficulty? The extreme ends of this spectrum are: Player levels up really fast and blows away monsters without much effort Monsters are incredibly strong and even at low levels, are very difficult to beat I've also tried a strange situation of making enemies relative to players, i.e. an enemy will always be at 50% or 100% or 150% of player stats (thus requiring the player to use other techniques instead of brute strength to succeeed). But where's the balance, and how do you find it? Edit: For example, I am expecting to hear things like: Balance high instead of balance low (200 HP and 20 str is easier to balance than 20 HP and 2 str) Look at easiest vs. hardest monsters, and see what you have in terms of a range

• Is there any way to simulate a slow connection between my server and an iPad (without installing anything on the server)?

• Using a GPL licensed library in a commercial app

  I develop an android application and in my app I use a libary (jar) that I download from the internet. This jar is open-source under the "GNU General Public License v2". I tried to read the text of the license but had difficulty understanding it. My question is: can I use this libary without changing nothing in the jar in a commercial application? I will be making profit from selling my app which uses this GPL-ed .jar file. If possible, I would like to avoid converting my application to open-source.
