• Are Promises/A a good event design pattern to implement even in synchronous languages like PHP?

  I have always kept an eye out for event systems when writing code in scripting languages. Web applications have a history of allowing the user to add plugins and modules whenever needed. In most PHP systems you have a global/singleton event object which all interested parties tie into and wait to be alerted to changes. Event::on('event_name', $callback); Recently more patterns like the observer have been used for things like jQuery. $(el).on('event', callback); Even PHP now has built in classes for it. class Blog extends SplSubject { public function save() { $this->notify(); } } Anyway, the Promises/A proposal has caught my eye. It is designed for asynchronous systems, but I'm wondering if it is also a good design to implement now that even synchronous languages like PHP are changing. Combining Dependency Injection with Promises/A seems it might be the best combination for handling events currently.

• PHP - Loop thru recordset and fire event each n rows

  I'm looking for the right logic to loop thru a recordset and fire an event each n times. Searching on Google i've found some discussion on similar situations, but it seems that solutions don't fits my needs. Let's say i have a recordset of 22 rows. I want to loop thru each row and launch a function on the 4th, the 8th, the 12th and so on... Using the modulus operator as shown in this answer, if($i % 4 == 0), i get the event fired each 4 rows, but 22 its not a multiple of 4 so the event is fired till the 20th row and then nothing. Maybe i need to make a division counting rows in 'excess'? Since the recordset will be between 50 and 200 rows i think its not necessary run multiple query of 4 rows, am I wrong? Thanks in advance!

• Turn Windows Event Logs EVT files into Syslog to send to LogLogic

  I have a a requirement to analyze 13gb of Windows logs by feeding it into a LogLogic Log aggregator. LogLogic is essentially Linux Syslog server, it can take a Syslog (Tcp/udp 514) feed or log on to a windows share and pull a flat file log. The only problem is that it cannot read the binary .EVT files from Windows Event logs. Normally, I would use Lasso to end the logs to a loglogic as syslog, but it has to read the logs from WMI and uses the DLLs on the log source host to format them and transmit them as syslog in the formatting that LogLogic expects. Does anyone know: A. Is there some kind of product out there to do this? or - B. Is there some way to import them into a Windows event veiwer in a way that lasso (or snare for that matter) will see them as actual real event logs on that host and forward them to the loglogic device as syslog.

  i want to view tracing events from the Event Tracing for Windows system. As far as i can tell the only client program that exists for connecting to providers is a command line tool that comes with the Microsoft Windows Device Driver Development Kit (DDK), e.g.: tracelog -start "NT Kernel Logger" -f krnl.etl -dpcisr -nodisk -nonet -b 1024 -min 4 -max 16 -ft 10 –UsePerfCounter ... tracelog –stop It then requires a separate command line tool to convert the generated log file into something usable, e.g.: trcerpt krnl.etl -report isrdpc.xml Has nobody come up with a Windows program (ala Performance Monitor, Process Monitor, Event Viewer) that lets me start tracing by pushing a "Go" button, let me see events, and i can stop it with a "Stop" button? Is there GUI for Event Tracing for Windows?

• Event Viewer shows service name as a truncated 8 character name

  I have written a service which logs to the Windows Event Log when it has any problems. This works fine and the service name is shown correctly in the Source column of the Event Viewer. The problem I am seeing is when my service hits some major problems like the networking layer has died etc. When this happens the event log shows errors about my service but the service name is shown as a truncated 8 character name. This name looks to be that of the executable and not the service name. Is this normal behaviour for a truncated name to be show ?

• SBS 2003 no network connection and acting strangely a bunch of Event ID 13568

  I've got an SBS 2003 Standard server and it was running fine until earlier today when it was rebooted, after the reboot it has no network connection, I can't seem to right click on a lot of stuff and get dialog boxes, I can't launch IE, it's acting extremely strange. We are dead in the water at this point. I checked the event logs and noticed we're getting a ton of Event ID's 13568. I thought it was a Journal Wrap error, and while I was going to try to fix it using this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762 I can't even do that because after I set the D4 value, then went to restart NTFRS from command prompt and I got the following: System Error 1059 has occurred. Circular service dependency was specified. That is where I'm at and haven't been able to figure anything else out. • Looking for event management application

  Hello, I'm looking for a web-based event management application for managing events (or activities) on certain days that I setup. And then I want people to be able to sign up for them. I'm looking for something that can then be embedded in my website, similar to a Google Calendar. Then for a given event's day, I can click on it, see who's attending. Ideally, I wouldn't have to invite people to the event, but they can just sign up for it. I'm not looking to use something like Evite. This application is going to be used to manage a schedule of bike races, and who from my club will sign up for them. Thanks for any suggestions.

• Windows 2008 server unaccessible without traces in the event log

  I am trying to figure out why a Windows 2008 server became inaccessible in terms of RDP and access to a web application. The server was turned off and then on. Look at the event log at the time it went offline, I can't find anything. And looking at misc application logs, the system was running like normal after it went offline. It has to be said that by mistake the firewall was switched off earlier, so a lot of attempts had been done to access the SQL Server with the sa user as well as RDP login. But the attempts has been going on for days, so nothing new about that. Besides the event logs, is there anywhere else I can go to examine the cause of this? I am also in doubt whether or not a DOS attack or similar would show up in the event log. From a log for a backup application running on this server I can see that an attempt was done to access a remote IP after the server went offline, but got no connection.

Simply putting it, I would like to have several UIButtons generated dynamically (within a loop) naming them dynamically, as well as other related functions. button1,button2,button3 etc.. I can't change it. • Text Hints with JQuery and JavaScript for loop

  Hey guys! I'm developing a small app where i ask users to put some info. I want to show text hints in the input fields. I do this in a for loop... When the page is loaded, the hints are displayed correctly but nothing happens on 'focus' and 'blur' events... I'm wondering why since when I don't use a 'for loop' in my js code, everything works find... • Basic syntax for an animation loop?

  I know that jQuery, for example, can do animation of sorts. I also know that at the very core of the animation, there must me some sort of loop doing the animation. What is an example of such a loop? A complete answer should ideally answer the following questions: What is a basic syntax for an effective animation recursion that can animate a single property of a particular object at a time? The function should be able to vary its target object and property of the object. What arguments/parameters should it take? What is a good range of reiterating the loop? In milliseconds? (Should this be a parameter/argument to the function?) REMEMBER: The answer is NOT necessarily language specific, but if you are writing in a specific language, please specify which one. Error handling is a plus. {Nothing is more irritating (for our purposes) than an animation that does something strange, like stopping halfway through.} Thanks!

• Having a different action for each button dynamically created in a loop

  Hi, use this website a lot but first time posting. My program creates a number of buttons depending on the number of records in a file. E.g. 5 records, 5 buttons. The buttons are being created but i'm having a problem with the action listener. If add the action listener in the loop every button does the same thing; but if I add the action listener outside the loop it just adds the action listener to last button. Any ideas? The method sort runs properly until the third iteration, unil for some reason the for loop seems to repeat indefinitely.   I have a PSP page with html embedded. I need to place another for loop so i can insert another %s next to background-color: which will instert a appropriate colour to colour in the html table. For example i need to insert for z in colours so it can loop over the colours list and insert the correct colour. Where ever i try to insert the for loop it doesnt seem to work it most commonly colours each cell in the table 60 times then moves onto the next cell and repeats itself and crashes my web browser. • Internal loop only runs once, containing loop runs endlessly

  noob question I'm afraid. I have a loop that runs and rotates the hand of a clock and an internal loop that checks the angle of the hand if it is 90, 180, 270 and 360. On these 4 angles the corresponding div is displayed and its siblings removed. The hand loops and loops eternally, which is what I want, but the angle check only runs the loop once through the whole 360. As the hand passes through the angles it is correctly displaying and removing divs but is doesn't continue after the first revolution of the clock. I've obviously messed up somewhere and there is bound to be a more efficient way of doing all this. I am using jQueryRotate.js for my rotations. • How to parse (infinite) nested object notation?

  I am currently breaking my head about transforming this object hash: "food": { "healthy": { "fruits": ['apples', 'bananas', 'oranges'], "vegetables": ['salad', 'onions'] }, "unhealthy": { "fastFood": ['burgers', 'chicken', 'pizza'] } } to something like this: food:healthy:fruits:apples food:healthy:fruits:bananas food:healthy:fruits:oranges food:healthy:vegetables:salad food:healthy:vegetables:onions food:unhealthy:fastFood:burgers food:unhealthy:fastFood:chicken food:unhealthy:fastFood:pizza In theory it actually is just looping through the object while keeping track of the path and the end result.   I would like to pack the content of a directory into an ext4 partition image easily, without mounting a loop device. Background: I am building a version of Android which will mount system partitions as a loop device for ARM. Though I can create those partition images by hand using loop devices, it is very troublesome. I want to use an sh script to automatically do the work, and without needing to loop mount the dd-created image and use cp -rp. The best is to directly pack the files into an image file. Question: Is there any simple command-line tools without needing loop mount and root permission that can pack files into an ext4 partition image?

• Correct For Loop Design

  What is the correct design for a for loop? Felix currently uses if len a > 0 do for var i in 0 upto len a - 1 do println a.[i]; done done which is inclusive of the upper bound. This is necessary to support the full range of values of a typical integer type. However the for loop shown does not support zero length arrays, hence the special test, nor will the subtraction of 1 work convincingly if the length of the array is equal to the number of integers. (I say convincingly because it may be that 0 - 1 = maxval: this is true in C for unsigned int, but are you sure it is true for unsigned char without thinking carefully about integral promotions?) The actual implementation of the for loop by my compiler does correctly handle 0 but this requires two tests to implement the loop: continue: if not (i <= bound) goto break body if i == bound goto break ++i goto continue break: Throw in the hand coded zero check in the array example and three tests are needed. If the loop were exclusive it would handle zero properly, avoiding the special test, but there'd be no way to express the upper bound of an array with maximum size. Note the C way of doing this: for(i=0; predicate(i); increment(i)) has the same problem. The predicate is tested after the increment, but the terminating increment is not universally valid! There is a general argument that a simple exclusive loop is enough: promote the index to a large type to prevent overflow, and assume no one will ever loop to the maximum value of this type.. but I'm not entirely convinced: if you promoted to C's size_t and looped from the second largest value to the largest you'd get an infinite loop!

• Windows Server 2008 Send Error Message on Event Log Error

  We currently have a Windows Server 2008 machine that we have configured with a Custom Task to send an email whenever an error occurs in a certain Event Log. The trigger works perfectly, and sends emails whenever we need them to. HOWEVER, we cannot find a way to get the email to contain information about the error, particularly the error message. Is there any way to have the message change based on the contents of the event-log error?
