• Is it safe to run an operating system from an USB flash drive?

  I've got a laptop that has a broken harddisk controller. Replacing the motherboard is quite expensive. I thought about buying a flash drive and installing & running the system from it. However, I'm concerned about some things. Speed: Are they fast enough for swap memory (I've got only 1GB RAM installed.) I'm considering buying 2 or 3 of them and making them into a RAID. What about limited write cycles? How long will it last for a system that has a filesystem with journaling enabled? I'd hate to abandon it. Are there significant differences between internal SSD which are used in modern laptops like MacBooks and USB flash drives? What should I expect in 10 years when the memory wear starts kicking in?

• win7: app crashing/hanging on "save as"-dialog

  hi all, now this is really annoying - i'm having a global problem in win7: when using the system's "save as"-filedialog, the main app will just hang. the mouse-cursor is showing progress, the whole app is hanging and i need to terminate it manually. it's happening with every app! (notepad, word, graphics app). i'm assuming it's something with the system enumerating the harddisk-drivenames or something. any idea how to fix this? btw - when viewing the problem details - it's telling the module - it's msonsext.dll looks like some office thing to me. thanks

• httpd service keep restarting. after 15-20 mins

  I have recently purchased Dedicated Server which has 16bg ram and 1TB Harddisk. It has Cpanel and for firewall CSF Installd. I am mainly going to install it for File hosting service. Now the day i moved my httpd service keep restarting every 15-20 mins. It becomes unresponsive after that so have to manually restart it. • VMWare ESX installation on sata disk

  I have a PC with Gigabyte H77 motherboard with Intel I5-3550 CPU 8 GB RAM 1600MHz and a 500GB Harddisk (7200RPM) - WD Sata III disk I wish to install esx on it and run some virtual machines on it. not alot, something like 2-3 VMs. My hardisk is Sata, is it possible to install ESX Server on it ? I am not worried about loading issues. When i try loading the installation it writes it cannot detect my disk (since its not SCSI disk). How can i bypass this ? or find a solution. thanks

  I just got my new computer with a much bigger harddisk. I think I copied all important files over but just to be sure, I'd like to keep a disk image of my old disk. To save space, I'd like to compress it but I didn't find an option to mount a compressed image. My goals: Result must be easy to access No need to decompress the whole thing before I can access anything Files should be quick to locate - no TAR/CPIO archive Necessary space should be less than just copying the files over So ideally, I'm looking for a read-only, compressed file system which I can create in a file and which grows automatically.

• Clonezilla , NLite and PCs with different hardware specs

  I used Clonezilla to create and restore images from a master computer to other workstations with the same specs. But the problem now is there are new computers whose hardware specs are different than the ones I maintained (mostly the videocard is different). Is it possible to create a customize Windows XP installer using Nlite and integrate all potential videocard and motherboard drivers ? If I then used this NLite ISO to install to a master computer which i will later clone and restore the image to other workstations, will windows xp still pick up the correct driver set? During XP installation, does the installer transfers all the drivers to the computer's harddisk? Thanks! Ryan

• How can I retrieve data from a Western Digital Passport External Disk which is not getting recognized but getting shown as healthy in Device manager

  When I plug in this external harddisk It is not getting shown in the My Computer. But it gets shown perfectly well in the Device Manager When I go into the Computer Administrative panel and into the disk manager it asks me to initialize the disk Now when I try to initialize it, regardless of the method I try it shows me an error "Incorrect Function" As you can see windows tells me it is working properly. Is there anyway I can retrieve data from this?/access it? I have googled and it seems to be a frequent problem with WD drives. Anyone has any solutions on how I can get the data back?

• Can the onborad LAN cause computer shutdown

  I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again. • Recover Partition-Table still present in running system

  Hy, I accidentially overwrote the first 1M of my harddisk on linux (using dd). So, the partition-table is gone. I can still access all partition (except the first one) using /dev/sda2 (and so on), so the data is still there. I only need the partition boundaries to restore the table. How can I do this? The Linux-Kernel must still know them because all mount-points still work. fdisk -l /dev/sda doesn't work because it acctualy reads the partition table. Thanks!

  my domain is controlled by a Samba domain controller running on openSUSE 11.3. It manages other openSUSE boxes and some Windows 7 boxes. Now one harddisk of a Windows 7 computer crashed and I had to reinstall. I wasn't able to get the computer name ("Win26") of the broken PC out of the domain and so I couldn't add the reinstalled "Win26" to the domain again. So how can I remove the entry of the old "Win26" computer out of the domain controller, so that I can add the new "Win26" to the domain again?   The 300 GB harddisk has 2 partitions,90 GB and 200 GB! I can see the drives in windows(XP) but unable to access them, the file system is shown as RAW, 0 used space and 0 free space!..chkdsk returns the error "unable to determine volume version and date. chkddsk aborted." Is the MBR corrupt? How do I restore it? TestDisk tool isn't recognizing the partitions and says invalid entry for heads/cylinder, 15 and should be 255 and suggests to change it..Should I go ahead and change it? Please advise!

• "TMGR is Missing" after repair-installing Windows XP

  I have two OSes installed in my computer. - Windows XP Professional - Windows 7 Ultimate (Release Candidate 1/Build 7100) I used the Windows 7 boot loader by default to choose between OSes. When I was using my WinXP, my computer gets lagged suddenly and continuously, and the only way to fix it is by repair-installing it (because I've experienced this many times before, but without W7 installed). Everything goes OK. But when my XP was successfully reinstalled, I cannot boot my Windows 7 anymore. Every time I tried to boot the harddisk that contains W7, an error appeared. "TMGR is Missing". Now I have no idea how can I get back to my Windows 7. Any kind of help would be appreciated! :)

  Hi, When I plug an USB pen to my PC and mount the device using KDE's Device Notifier, the mounted device is owned by my user, who has write permissions. However, when I connect a USB harddisk and mount a partition in the same way, the mounted device is owned by root, and since the owner is the only one with write permissions I can't write to the disk. How do I configure the device notifier's actions to mount the HD with my user as owner, just like it mounts the USB pen? I'm using Fedora 9.

• Recovering data from a corrupted disk

  I use an external harddisk to backup my data (it had 3 partitions). Last week when I plugged it in, the OS (Win 7) hung up and I had to force re-boot the machine. When I turned it back on, the system just did not detect the hard-disk. It was last Sunday and I had to give up after sometime. Now I return back next Sunday (today) and when I plug it back-in to the machine, the OS detects the disk as well as all the 3 partitions on it. But it says all 3 are unformatted and I cant access any of them. Is there any way to recover data from the 3 partitions (I tried PC File Recovery and Recuva from PiriForm but neither detected these partitions).

  I have an external harddisk and my friends asked for it. The point is I don't trust in his anti-virus software. Is there anyway to allow some folders (I prepare hdd space for him) to write-able and all others is read-only ? or is there a software that can do like this ? And it would be great if I can have full access on my computer ONLY (may be with some specific software on my PC) and without having to modify anything. I don't ask for hdd-encryption since I only want to limit the area of write-able folder (and allow my friend to read through all my data), later I can scan for virus myself only in that area ... scanning entire hdd with 500gb/friend is not fun at all ! Background For example: At present and with only one programm installed (MS Access 2007) I have a about 15GB of my harddisk space used. I have little space (its a 17 GB partition on a SSD disk). I would like solutions that are like: Remove files not really needed (drivers not actually needed in the system) Help files not really needed (documentation) pagefile.sys (assuming I would have 4GB ram and no real need for swaping) hiberfil.sys (used for hibernate and sleep... I need that. though I would regain about 4GB space) At best I would like to delete mostly files that I would most likely not need. Though I have no good idea where to start there. Since my setup (hardware will not change) I would be willing to delete all the drivers that windows 8 has for hardware I do not have.... • Does multi-platter hard-drive use all of their heads to read simultaneously?

  Suppose we have a harddisk with 2 platters with characteristics below: Rotational rate: 10, 000 RPM Avg sectors/track: 1000 Surfaces: 4 Sector size: 512 bytes I was reading "Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective 2ed" when I found that it calculates transfer time as if it only uses ONE head to read a sector. If that's the case, why not use 4 heads to write(read) on 4 surfaces? So when I write a 2K bytes file, each head should only need to wait for the platters to rotate just one sector length instead of 4, thus reducing the transfer time by a factor of 4. Or even redesign sector to make each sector on one cylinder but on 4 tracks residing same position respectively on 4 surfaces. Each one of (512/4) bytes. So when the hd needs to read a sector of 512 bytes, we only need the disk to rotate roughly 1/4 compare to original time. The idea looks like RAID 0.

• Problem resolving many of the Web Pages

  I am presently running Ubuntu 12.04 and using Chrome/Firefox along with OpenDNS (have tried Google Public DNS as well as DNS of my ISP). Suddenly, a lot of websites that I visit frequently don't load anymore. Some of them are imgur, yahoo, fed-sudoku, microsoft and addons page of firefox. I am sure there are many more that won't load. I have Windows 7 in Dual-Boot and there are no problems whatsoever in opening these pages on Windows. A little History: 2 weeks back I installed Ubuntu 12.10. I faced this issue right-away on Ubuntu 12.10. I thought something must have went wrong with the installation, so I removed Ubuntu 12.10 and instead installed Lubuntu 12.10 on it. But the same issue persisted on Lubuntu as well. So, I tried opening these webpages in Live Environments (of Ubuntu 12.10, Lubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04.1) from USB. The issue was there for Ubuntu 12.10 and Lubuntu 12.10. However, I was able to access these webpages from Ubuntu 12.04.1. So, I installed 12.04.1 on my HardDisk. Everything on 12.04 was fine till yesterday; but suddenly, these sites don't load anymore. All this while, Windows 7 in Dual-Boot works flawlessly. Please help me resolve this issue.

• Windows 7 not booting after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I have Samsung sf511 with Windows 7 Home preinstalled. I installed Ubuntu 12.10 last night. First I mounted downloaded ubuntu 12.10 iso on a DVD from Windows 7, then I restarted, changed the boot option to DVD and let the Ubuntu DVD run. I selected "Install ubuntu alongside windows 7". In the next step I allocated the diskspace . Ubuntu installed perfectly and it ranned OK. I spent a good time exploring Ubuntu. When I restarted to start my work on Windows again and selected Windows 7 to boot, it showed blue screen after booting up (after logging in). I tried restarting several times but the same blue screen keep showing at the same point of bootup. I also restored windows to an earlier time. Left with no option I booted from Samsung provided windows recovery option. The recovery process ran fine but when it restarted to boot Windows for the first time all I see is a black screen. Nothing happens. It switches between dark command promt screen to a pitch black screen as if it's rebooting after every 10 seconds or so. The laptop can be booted from the DVD Drive or USB drive but is not booting from Harddisk. What should I do in order to use both Windows 7 and Ubuntu?
