  I find the UI and general usability of the prepackaged windows Media Player to be cludgy and at times incomprehensible. I used to use programs like WinAmp and Sonique, many years ago. What are some current alternatives to the windows Media Player? I don't have iTunes - I'm pretty happy with ripping my own audio files from my album collection. I'm specifically looking for the follow qualities/abilities: Easy sorting and manipulation of the media library Easy tagging of media - marking favorites and ratings, etc. Preferably lightweight. Something like a Picasa for audio media.

• Bulk delete music files physically in songbird

  I've downloaded hundreds of songs from SXSW 2009 Showcasing Artists. In Songbird, I've filtered out a lot of songs which I don't like, i.e. gave rating of one to them. I hope to delete all these from my hard disk, but it's a feature yet to implement in Songbird. The most close solution I could get is this. But it works not well, and always messes files around. So, hope you could bring up a reliable and better solution.

  I'm sitting under Vista and the problem is -- though I can see disc number of track in Winamp or some other multimedia players, I cannot sort files by disc number in Windows Explorer. I've scanned through the whole long list of available properties of files but haven't found "disc number" or similar property. So is there any way to sort tracks by disc number in Windows Explorer, and if there is, then how to do it?

  It's come to my mind that parts of the code in, say, Unix, has maybe passed unaltered from one version or flavor into another. Maybe some pieces of the source code of the ls command is the same, unaltered, than was written years ago. Have any of you read or learn about this ? What would be the oldest living piece of unaltered production code still running, passing from version through version of a program or system ? Will the code we write outlive us for decades ?

• How to create a test environnement on the production FTP

  Hello, I'm currently working on a symfony webapp, which is already on production. To develop and add/delete/modify functionnality of the model, I work on my laptop, using symfony 'dev' environnemment. I test if everything work fine, then I pray a little and deploy it on the prod server (with all the risk of data error, like when I add new not null attributes on the model, prod server configuration special stuff, version of php/apache etc.). The problem is that I would like to setup a "staging" server, which would be a copy of the production server (same database, same configuration apache/php), so that, if the deployment goes bad, the production user stay untouched and working, only the staging server is down. But my client has only 1 FTP available. So, the question is : can I run 2 symfony project, with different models, on the same FTP ? Or is there another way to do what I want to do ? Thank you !

• U1 Music Streaming: Is it possible to have album cover art for OGG files?

  Just started trying out the U1 music streaming service and so far very pleased. The one issue I have that could be a deal-breaker when it comes time to pay up is that half of my collection is OGG Vorbis and I cannot find a way to show album art for OGG files. I already tried adding a cover.jpg to the folder and embedding the image via easyTAG (works for MP3 but not OGG). Does anybody have a solution besides transcoding them all to MP3? Will this likely be supported in future?

• Server unable to find public folder in rails 3 production environment

  Hi, I'm using the latest rails 3 beta. The app works fine in development mode, but when I start the server in production mode via rails server -e production, it seems that the public folder can't be found. I get error messages like: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/javascripts/jquery.js"): And similar messages for everything that should be in the public folder. I've tried this with both mongrel and webrick. I'd appreciate any help.

I tried modifying the file directly on the server, and restarting the app, but the changes does not seem to take effect, or takes a long time to (caching?) I also tried to do "script/server production" locally, but that is very slow The other option is to code and deploy, but that is very inefficient.   This has happened to most of us... You come to work one day. Everything seems normal: the sun is shining, birds are chirping, but you notice a couple of weird things on your way to work like deja vu with cat in matrix. You get into office, there are a lot of phones ringing, but could be that they are just doing a new sales promotion. You settle in, when you notice a dark cloud hovering over you. It takes you a couple of moments, but you recognize the cloud is your boss. Usually he checks on you every morning with his "Soooo Peeeeter, how about those TCP/IP reports?" routine, but today he forgot everything about common manners and rudely invaded your personal space. No "Good Morning", just some drooling, grunts and curses. He reminds you a bit of neanderthal who is trying to get away from cyber tooth tiger, fear and panic all compressed in a tight ball. You try to decipher the new language that he created since yesterday and you start understanding that something bad happened overnight - production system went down. Now, your system is usually used by clients during regular working hours from 9-5, but for whatever reason you didn't get any alerts on your beeper (for people under 30 - beeper was like a mobile phone that could only ring and tell you who beeped you). Need to remember to charge it next time. So it is 8:45am, the system MUST be up at 9am. Every 10 seconds, your boss lets out yet another curse which communicates to you that another customer is having problems getting into the system. Also several account managers are now hovering over your boss trying to make him understand how clients are REALLY REALLY suffering. Everyone is depending on you to get the system up ASAP and at the same time hinder your progress by constantly distracting you. How do you keep cool in a situation like this?

  Hey I am looking for theory, algorithms and similar for how to compare music. More specifically, I am looking into how to dupecheck music tracks that have different bitrates or perhaps slightly different variations (radio vs album version), but otherwise sound the same. Use cases for this include services such as Grooveshark, Youtube, etc. where they get a lot of duplicate tracks. I am also interested in text comparisons (Britney Spers vs Britney Spears, how far they deviate, etc.) although this is secondary and I already have some sources to go on in this area. I am mostly interested in codec-agnostic comparison techniques and algoritms (assuming a "raw" stream), but codec-specific resources are appreciated. I am aware of projects such as musicbrainz.org, but have not investigated it further, and would be interested if such projects could be of help in this endeavor.

  It seems to me as if there are a higher proportion of musicians in the programming field than in the general public. Maybe it's just an illusion caused by the fact that I'm an amateur guitarist myself, so I tend to notice coding musicians (or musical coders?) more. But I wonder if there really is some connection. Perhaps a shared set of skills or an innate quality that makes it more likely for someone who enjoys programming to also enjoy playing and composing music. • Node & Redis: Crucial Design Issues in Production Mode

  This question is a hybrid one, being both technical and system design related. I'm developing the backend of an application that will handle approx. 4K request per second. We are using Node.js being super fast and in terms of our database struction we are using MongoDB, with Redis being a layer between Node and MongoDB handling volatile operations. I'm quite stressed because we are expecting concurrent requests that we need to handle carefully and we are quite close to launch. However I do not believe I've applied the correct approach on redis. I have a class Student, and they constantly change stages(such as 'active', 'doing homework','in lesson' etc. Thus I created a Redis DB for each state. (1 for being 'active', 2 for being 'doing homework'). Above I have the structure of the 'active' students table; xa5p - JSON stringified object #1 pQrW - JSON stringified object #2 active_student_table - {{studentId:'xa5p'}, {studentId:'pQrW'}} Since there is no 'select all keys method' in Redis, I've been suggested to use a set such that when I run command 'smembers' I receive the keys and later on do 'get' for each id in order to find a specific user (lets say that age older than 15). I've been also suggested that in fact I used never use keys in production mode. My question is, no matter how 'conceptual' it is, what specific things I should avoid doing in Node & Redis in production stage?. Are they any issues related to my design? Students must be objects and I sure can list them in a list but I haven't done yet. Is it that crucial in production stage?

• Artists and music - i need help to decide wich cms to use.

  A friend has asked me to build a site with the following options: staff members must be able to add new music and artists to the page a gallery must be provided - it is also good if each artist has the ability to have his/her own, smaller, gallery users must be able to vote for artists users must be able to alter in discussions (forums or comments sections) staff members must be able to blog staff members must be able to write articles I did a small project where i actually implementet all of these features, but i want to use an existing content managment system for all of these features so that future devolpers can, hopefully, more easy extend the website. And also, so that i dont have to provide to much documentation. I have never developed a website using an external cms like drupal or wordpress and after seeing hours of tutorial videos of both systems, i still cant make up my mind on wheter i should : a) use Drupal 7 b) use Wordpress 3 c) create my own cms I can only imagine that staff members would also want to create content using iphone or android based mobile devices. But this is not a required feature. Can someone, with experience, please tell me about their experiences with bigger projects like this? The site will approx. have a total of 400 000 - 500 000 visitors (not daily visitors, based on numbers from last year in a period of 4 months)
