  • Debian Squeeze Pre-review

<b>Christofoo Review: </b>"Right now, Lenny (5.0) is the stable release, and Squeeze (6.0) is in testing. Sometime "soon" Squeeze will get frozen, which means the regular flow of package migration will stop, and from then on it will only get bug and security fixes through a method of back-porting."

  • Cross-platform independent development

    - by Joe Wreschnig
Some years ago, if you wrote in C and some subset of C++ and used a sufficient number of platform abstractions (via SDL or whatever), you could run on every platform an indie could get on - Linux, Windows, Mac OS of various versions, obscure stuff like BeOS, and the open consoles like the GP2X and post-death Dreamcast. If you got a contract for a closed platform at some point, you could port your game to that platform with "minimal" code changes as well. Today, indie developers must use XNA to get on the Xbox 360 (and upcoming Windows phone); must not use XNA to work anywhere else but Windows; until recently had to use Java on Android; Flash doesn't run on phones, HTML5 doesn't work on IE. Unlike e.g. DirectX vs. OpenGL or Windows vs. Unix, these are changes to the core language you write your code in and can't be papered over without, basically, writing a compiler. You can move some game logic into scripts and include an interpreter - except when you can't, because the iPhone SDK doesn't allow it, and performance suffers because no one allows JIT. So what can you do if you want a really cross-platform portable game, or even just a significant body of engine and logic code? Is this not a problem because the platforms have fundamentally diverged - it's just plain not worthwhile to try to target both an iPhone and the Xbox 360 with any shared code because such a game would be bad? (I find this very unlikely. I can easily see wanting to share a game between a Windows Mobile phone and an Android, or an Xbox 360 and an iPad.) Are interfaces so high-level now that porting time is negligible? (I might believe this for business applications, but not for games with strict performance requirements.) Is this going to become more pronounced in the future? Is the split going to be, somewhat scarily, still down vendor lines? Will we all rely on high-level middleware like Flash or Unity to get anything cross-platform done? tl;dr - Is porting a problem, is it going to be a bigger problem in the future, and if so how do we solve it?

  • Converting from different handedness coordinate systems

    - by SirYakalot
I am currently porting a demo from XNA to DirectX which, as I understand it, both have coordinate systems with different handednesses. What are the things I need to bare in mind when converting between the two? I understand not everything needs to be changed. Also I notice that many of the 3D maths functions in some of the direct3D libraries have right handed and left handed alternatives. Would it be better to just use these?

  • Pack of resources in one big file with XNA

    - by Cristian
Is it possible to pack all the little .xnb files into one big file? Given the level of abstraction of the XNA Framework I though this would come out of the box but I can't find any well integrated solution. So far the best candidate is XnaZip but in addition to having to compile the resources in a post-build event, and a little trouble porting the game to XBOX I have to rename all the references to resources I have already implemented.

  • Redirecting requests for .html pages in subdirectories to the same page in root with .htaccess

    - by Asherion
I am porting a site from an old version of a CMS to a newer version which has different page addressing techniques. I'm unfortunately not very good with htaccess at all. URL/blog/sublblog/article.html is now simply URL/article.html Unfortunately, this will destroy any linking programs they have going, and break all the old links. I need a way to use .htaccess say: if request = /(any subdirectory)/(string).html then redirect to /(string).html If that makes any sense.

  • Adobe Air Mobile AS3 app: challenges and how to overcome them?

    - by Arthur Wulf White
I made a PC flash game for LD 26 - minimalism and I am working on porting it to Android. Some questions I'd like to ask: Is it bad to heavily use vector graphics (ie. this.graphics.lineTo()) in Mobile Air? Does Stencyl completely alleviate this issue? Are there any inherit disadvantages to using Air Mobile that I'm missing? Where is the documentation for Air mobile (I googled and found no recent books or documentation pdf so far)

  • What are the app file size limitations for different smartphone OSes & carriers?

    - by Nick Gotch
I know the iPhone App Store limits how large an app can be in general and there are also limitations with AT&T over the size it can be to transmit over a data plan vs WiFi. I have no idea what, if any, these limits are for Android apps and what I'm finding online is a mix of different numbers. Does anyone know these numbers definitively? The Android game I'm porting is in the 20-30MB range and we'd like to know if we need to further reduce its size.

Above the Fold: Silverlight: "Accept and Cancel Buttons Behavior in Silverlight" Matt Casto WP7: "Windows Phone 7 Runtime Debugging" Mike Wolf Shoutouts: Al Pascual announced a get-together if you're going to be in Phoenix on February 10 (next Thursday)... I just can't tell what time it is from the page: Phoenix Dev Meet-Up From SilverlightCream.com: Ten Pet Peeves of WP7 Applications Check out Shawn Wildermuth's Top 10 annoyances when trying out any new app on the WP7... if you're a dev, you might want to keep these in mind. Silverlight TV 60: Checking Out the Zero Gravity Game, Now on Windows Phone 7 John Papa has Silverlight TV number 60 up and this one features Phoenix' own Ryan Plemons discussing the game Zero Gravity and some of the things he had to do to take the game to WP7 ... and the presentation looks as good from here as it did inside the studio :) The Full Stack: Entity Framework To Phone, The Server Side Jesse Liberty and Jon Galloway have Part 6 of their full-stack podcast up ... this is their exploration of MVC3, ASP.NET, Silverlight, and WP7... pair programming indeed! Life Cycle: Page State Management Jesse Liberty also has episode 29 (can you believe that??) of his Windows Phone From Scratch series up ... he's continuing his previous LifeCycle discussion with Page State Management this time. Windows Phone 7 Runtime Debugging Mike Wolf is one of those guys that when he blogs, we should all pay attention, and this post is no exception... he has contributed a run-time diagnostics logger to the WP7Contrib project ... wow... too cool! Accept and Cancel Buttons Behavior in Silverlight Matt Casto has his blog back up and has a behavior up some intuitive UX on ChildWindows by being able to bind to a default or cancel button and have those events activated when the user hits Enter or Escape... very cool, Matt! • Extreme Makeover, Phone Edition: Comcasts xfinity

Mobile Makeover For many companies the first foray into Windows Phone 7 (WP7) may be in porting their existing mobile apps. It is tempting to simply transfer existing functionality, avoiding the additional design costs. Readdressing business needs and taking advantage of the WP7 platform can reduce cost and is essential to a successful re-launch. To better understand the advantage of new development lets examine a conceptual upgrade of Comcasts existing mobile app. Before Comcast has a great mobile app that provides several key features. The ability to browse the lineup using a guide, a client for Comcast email accounts, On Demand gallery, and much more. We will leverage these and build on them using some of the incredible WP7 features.   After With the proliferation of DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) and a variety of media devices (TV, PC, Mobile) content providers are challenged to find creative ways to build their brands. Every client touch point must provide both value added services as well as opportunities for marketing and up-sale; WP7 makes it easy to focus on those opportunities. The new app is an excellent vehicle for presenting Comcasts newly rebranded TV, Voice, and Internet services. These services now fly under the banner of xfinity and have been expanded to provide the best experience for Comcast customers. The Windows Phone 7 app will increase the surface area of this service revolution.   The home menu is simplified and highlights Comcasts Triple Play: Voice, TV, and Internet. The inbox has been replaced with a messages view, and message management is handled by a WP7 hub. The hub presents emails, tweets, and IMs from Comcast and other viewers the user follows on Twitter.  The popular view orders shows based on the users viewing history and current cable package. The first show Glee is both popular and participating in a conceptual co-marketing effort, so it receives prime positioning. The second spot goes to a hit show on a premium channel, in this example HBOs The Pacific, encouraging viewers to upgrade for this premium content. The remaining spots are ordered based on viewing history and popularity. Tapping the play button moves the user to the theatre where they can watch previews or full episodes streaming from Fancast. Tapping an extra presents the user with show details as well as interactive content that may be included as part of co-marketing efforts. Co-Marketing with Dynamic Content The success of Comcasts services are tied to the success of the networks and shows it purveys, making co-marketing efforts essential. In this concept FOX is co-marketing its popular show Glee. A customized panorama is updated with the latest gleeks tweets, streaming HD episodes, and extras featuring photos and video of the cast. If WP7 apps can be dynamically extended with web hosted .xap files, including sandboxed partner experiences would enable interactive features such as the Gleek Peek, in which a viewer can select a character from a panorama to view the actors profile. This dynamic inline experience has a tailored appeal to aspiring creatives and is technically possible with Windows Phone 7.   Summary The conceptual Comcast mobile app for Windows Phone 7 highlights just a few of the incredible experiences and business opportunities that can be unlocked with this latest mobile solution. It is critical that organizations recognize and take full advantage of these new capabilities. Simply porting existing mobile applications does not leverage these powerful tools; re-examining existing applications and upgrading them to Windows Phone 7 will prove essential to the continued growth and success of your brand.Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Converting Complicated Oracle Join Syntax

I need this in a format that pg will understand. I am having trouble deciphering this join hierarchy: SELECT * FROM PLANNED_MISSION PM_CTRL, CONTROL_AGENCY CA, MISSION_CONTROL MC, MISSION_OBJECTIVE MOR, REQUEST_OBJECTIVE RO, MISSION_REQUEST_PAIRING MRP, FRIENDLY_UNIT FU, PACKAGE_MISSION PKM, MISSION_AIRCRAFT MA, MISSION_OBJECTIVE MO, PLANNED_MISSION PM WHERE PM.MSN_TASKED_UNIT_TYPE != 'EAM' AND PM.MSN_INT_ID = MO.MSN_INT_ID AND PM.MSN_INT_ID = PKM.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND PM.MSN_INT_ID = MA.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND COALESCE(MA.MA_RESOURCE_INT_ID,0) = (SELECT COALESCE(MIN(MA1.MA_RESOURCE_INT_ID),0) FROM MISSION_AIRCRAFT MA1 WHERE MA.MSN_INT_ID = MA1.MSN_INT_ID) AND MA.FU_UNIT_ID = FU.FU_UNIT_ID (+) AND MA.CC_COUNTRY_CD = FU.CC_COUNTRY_CD (+) AND MO.MSN_INT_ID = MC.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND MO.MO_INT_ID = MC.MO_INT_ID (+) AND MC.CAG_CALLSIGN = CA.CAG_CALLSIGN (+) AND MC.CTRL_MSN_INT_ID = PM_CTRL.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND MO.MSN_INT_ID = MRP.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND MO.MO_INT_ID = MRP.MO_INT_ID (+) AND MRP.REQ_INT_ID = RO.REQ_INT_ID (+) AND RO.MSN_INT_ID = MOR.MSN_INT_ID (+) AND RO.MO_INT_ID = MOR.MO_INT_ID (+) AND MO.MSN_INT_ID = :msn_int_id AND MO.MO_INT_ID = :obj_int_id AND COALESCE(PM.MSN_MISSION_NUM, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( PKM.PKG_NM,' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MA.FU_UNIT_ID, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MA.CC_COUNTRY_CD, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE(FU.FU_COMPONENT, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MA.ACT_AC_TYPE,' ') LIKE '%' AND MO.MO_MSN_CLASS_CD LIKE '%' AND COALESCE(MO.MO_MSN_TYPE, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MO.MO_OBJ_LOCATION,COALESCE( MOR.MO_OBJ_LOCATION, ' ')) LIKE '%' AND COALESCE(CA.CAG_TYPE_OF_CONTROL, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MC.CAG_CALLSIGN,' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MC.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM, ' ') LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( MC.CTRL_MSN_INT_ID, 0) LIKE '%' AND COALESCE(MC.CTRL_MO_INT_ID, 0) LIKE '%' AND COALESCE( PM_CTRL.MSN_MISSION_NUM,' ') LIKE '%' Any help is appreciated.

  • SQL Server Collation / ADO.NET DataTable.Locale with different languages

    - by Turro
Hi all, we have WinForms app which stores data in SQL Server (2000, we are working on porting it in 2008) through ADO.NET (1.1, working on porting to 4.0). Everything works fine if I read data previsouly written in Western-European locale (E.g.: "test", "test ù"), but now we have to be able to mix Western and non-Western alphabets as well (E.g.: "test - ???" - these are just random arabic chars). On the SQL Server side, database has been set with the Latin1_General collation, the field is a nvarchar(80). If I run a SQL SELECT statement (E.g.: "SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE field = 'test - ???'", don't mind about the "*" or the actual names) from Query Analyzer, I get no results; the same happens if I pass the Sql statement to an ADO.NET DataAdapter to fill a DataTable. My guess is that it has something to do with collation, but I don't know how to correct this: do I have to change to collation (SQL Server) to a different one? Or do I have to set the locale on the DataAdaoter/DataTable (ADO.NET)? Thanks in advance to anyone who will help

  • MonoGame: PC + Mobile?

    - by ashes999
I'm researching Monogame. Their goal is to allow "easy" porting of an existing XNA/Windows game to mobile. Does this mean you can have one solution (theoretically) with shared code, and it works on all three platforms (PC, Android, iPhone)? Or do you need to port your game from PC to Android, and then again to iPhone? I'm sure "write once, run anywhere" works 80% of the time, I'm not worried about that other 20% like support for GPS, acceleratometer, etc. which doesn't exist on all platforms.

  • Portal Ported to a Graphing Calculator

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
It’s not exactly a 3D-rendered GPU-burner, but this calculator-based version of Portal still features the same portal-jumping tricks that delighted players in the original game. Built using Axe Parser, an advanced programming language for graphing calculators, Portal: Prelude is part an experiment in pushing the limits of Axe Parser and part long standing tradition of porting popular video games to graphing calculators. You can read more about Axe Parser and the many games and program projects under development using it here. • Cross platform mobile development VS Native Mobile Development: Present And Future.

    - by MobileDev123
I just completed one year in Smart phone development, working on BlackBerry and Android and also developed one application exclusively targeted to nokia feature phones. And just a month ago I come to know about Titanium Appcelerator tool that enables cross platform development, but there are some developers who complain about it's sub-par functionalities. Even a little bit experience of mine says that developing in native environment rather than these cross platform tools will give you more advantages by giving a developer a chance to add more features with better performance. Do you have same experience? Or you find such cross development tools really useful regarding to advance functionality and performance? As porting (or co developing) same application to different mobile platform is common thing nowadays, what do you think will these cross platform tools evolve and force developers to get a hands on approach on them or majority will stick to the native development environment?

  • What programming Language Would you learn to Re-engineer USB Devices? [closed]

    - by user70113
Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed Ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer. Far from it. But, I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers. I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up. Thanks for any advise folks Most Appreciated.

  • Multi-lingual error messages and error numbers

    - by Jon Hopkins
So we're looking at the possibility of porting our software to support multiple languages and one of the areas we're going to have to deal with is error messages and other notifications. These obviously have to be reported to the users in their own language. Our team (largely) only speak English and even if we were all multi-lingual we're looking at selling to a wide range of countries and could never expect to have a reasonable number of people speaking all languages (we're a small company). The obvious way to get round the language issue when errors or other messages we may get asked about which are being reported is error numbers which would be consistent across language. While these are going to exist in the backend (if only as key on the error message), I'd really rather not throw them at users if we don't have to but I don't have any other solution. Anyone have any useful suggestions for alternatives?
