  • How do you balance the speed of Sprints with the customer's conservative adoption schedule?

    I'd prefer to have sprints that last 3-4 weeks, but customers don't want to adopt new feature/function every 3-4 weeks. Existing customers are conservative and, once we meet their minimum bar for features and capabilities, they like to remain on a stable release for much longer than 4 weeks. Even a 3-month cycle would be pushing it for them. On the other hand, newer customers tend to have more feature requests, and are willing to follow sprints. But this willingness dissipates after we've met their bar. How do you balance the need for rapid sprints with the customer's conservative view of application change? I'm particularly interested in SaaS scenarios.

  • Monitor SQL Server Replication Jobs

    The Replication infrastructure in SQL Server is implemented using SQL Server Agent to execute the various components involved in the form of a job (e.g. LogReader agent job, Distribution agent job, Merge agent job) SQL Server jobs execute a binary executable file which is basically C++ code. You can download all the scripts for this article here SQL Server Job Schedules By default each of job has only one schedule that is set to Start automatically when SQL Server Agent starts. This schedule ensures that when ever the SQL Server Agent service is started all the replication components are also put into action. This is OK and makes sense but there is one problem with this default configuration that needs improvement  -  if for any reason one of the components fails it remains down in a stopped state.   Unless you monitor the status of each component you will typically get to know about such a failure from a customer complaint as a result of missing data or data that is not up to date at the subscriber level. Furthermore, having any of these components in a stopped state can lead to more severe problems if not corrected within a short time. The action required to improve on this default settings is in fact very simple. Adding a second schedule that is set as a Daily Reoccurring schedule which runs every 1 minute does the trick. SQL Server Agent’s scheduler module knows how to handle overlapping schedules so if the job is already being executed by another schedule it will not get executed again at the same time. So, in the event of a failure the failed job remains down for at most 60 seconds. Many DBAs are not aware of this capability and so search for more complex solutions such as having an additional dedicated job running an external code in VBS or another scripting language that detects replication jobs in a stopped state and starts them but there is no need to seek such external solutions when what is needed can be accomplished by T-SQL code. SQL Server Jobs Status In addition to the 1 minute schedule we also want to ensure that key components in the replication are enabled so I can search for those components by their Category, and set their status to enabled in case they are disabled, by executing the stored procedure MonitorEnableReplicationAgents. The jobs that I typically have handled are listed below but you may want to extend this, so below is the query to return all jobs along with their category. SELECT category_id, name FROM msdb.dbo.syscategories ORDER BY category_id; Distribution Cleanup LogReader Agent Distribution Agent Snapshot Agent Jobs By default when a publication is created, a snapshot agent job also gets created with a daily schedule. I see more organizations where the snapshot agent job does not need to be executed automatically by the SQL Server Agent  scheduler than organizations who   need a new snapshot generated automatically. To assure this setting is in place I created the stored procedure MonitorSnapshotAgentsSchedules which disables snapshot agent jobs and also deletes the job schedule. It is worth mentioning that when the publication property immediate_sync is turned off then the snapshot files are not created when the Snapshot agent is executed by the job. You control this property when the publication is created with a parameter called @immediate_sync passed to sp_addpublication and for an existing publication you can use sp_changepublication. Implementation The scripts assume the existence of a database named PerfDB. Steps: Run the scripts to create the stored procedures in the PerfDB database. Create a job that executes the stored procedures every hour. -- Verify that the 1_Minute schedule exists.     I have a file called config.yml in my /config folder of my rails application. I also have an initializer: config/initializers/load_config.rb with the following code: APP_CONFIG = YAML.load_file("#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/config.yml") I am using the Whenever gem to set up a cron job, and would like to use my APP_CONFIG to call a function like so: #inside schedule.rb every 2.hours do runner "MyModel.someMethod('#{APP_CONFIG['some_value']}')" end but the Whenever gem doesn't seem to recognize the config file when I call whenever --update-crontab mysite How can I incorporate values from my configuration in my schedule.rb file (instead of hard-coding the value)?     How do I schedule a task to run once any time within a time range? and also, just once in a day without specifying a time? can windows task scheduler do it? and specifically, if my computer is off or on standby or hibernation at the time I want it to run it when it is on if it hasn't been run that day and the time has passed. I see an option to wake it to run the task , but could I then put it back to sleep? And i'd like to be able to as mentioned.. let it run when the computer is back on.

    I have a Buffalo AirStation WZR-HP-G301NH I am able to access it's settings via 192.168.11.1 I'm connecting wirelessly with toshiba i686 laptop on Linux Mint Debian with service pack 3 and i686 dual core kernel This is just my home network but I know that there must be a way for large industries to shut their networks down or lock out their network access temporarily based on a time schedule, automatically. Like mon - fri the network provides access from 8am to 10pm and then automatically shuts down. I want this to affect all the computers accessing this netowork... basically all my families computers so that the internet just automatically shuts down at bedtime. I am running Linux Mint Debian and so maybe I need to make a cron job or something but does anyone know how big industries implement this and how I can do it privately? TIA

    How to schedule a task X minutes after Windows Server 2003 starts? In "Scheduled Tasks" one can specify "When my computer starts" but I see no way to specify delay. What I am trying to achieve: there is a service (JIRA) that even though dependent on SQL Server service still doesn't wait long enough for SQL Server to become fully operational. So JIRA service fails to connect to the database and needs to be restarted manually after each server reboot. My plan is to add "SC stop" and "SC start" commands for JIRA service 3 minutes after server starts.

    could someone please tell me what I need to do in order to create an object in a function. I will try to explain by making up some sort of example... Let's say I have a program named TimeScheduler.cpp that implements the class Schedule.h (and I have the implementation in a separate file Schedule.cpp where we define the methods). In the declaration file we have declared two constructors Schedule(); //the default and Schedule(int, int, int);//accepts three arguments to get to the point--let's say in the main program file TimeScheduler.cpp we created our own functions in this program apart from the functions inherited from the class Schedule. so we have our prototypes listed at the top. /*prototypes*/ void makeSomeTime(); etc..... we have main(){ //etc etc... } we then define these program functions void makeSomeTime(){ //process } let's say that inside the function makeSomeTime(), we would like to create an array of Schedule objects like this Schedule ob[]={ summer(5,14, 49), fall(9,25,50) }; what do I have to do to the function makeSomeTime() in order for it to allow me to create this array of objects. The reason I ask is currently i'm having difficulty with my own program in that it WILL allow me to create this array of objects in main()....but NOT in a function like I just gave an example of. The strange thing is it will allow me to create a dynamic array of objects in the function..... like Schedule *ob = new Schedule[n+1]; ob[2]= Schedule(x,y,z); Why would it let me assign to a non-dynamic array in main(), but not let me do that in the function?

However, after restarting my windows xp, a dialog window poped out saying that my janel generated .exe file has crashed, with my RunAsService service kept on going. The service worked fine when I terminated the service and restarted it again manually. Nevertheless, the same crash happens over and over again every time I restart my Windows.

    I'm trying to script some IIS7 setup tasks in PowerShell using the WebAdministration module. I'm good with setting simple properties, but am having some trouble when it comes to dealing with collections of elements in the config files. As an immediate, example, I want to have application pools recycle on a given schedule, and the schedule is a collection of times. When I set this up via the IIS management console, the relevant config section looks like this: <add name="CVSupportAppPool"> <recycling> <periodicRestart memory="1024" time="00:00:00"> <schedule> <clear /> <add value="03:31:00" /> </schedule> </periodicRestart> </recycling> </add> In my script I would like to be able to accomplish the same thing, and I have the following two lines: #clear any pre-existing schedule Clear-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" #add the new schedule Add-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" -value (New-TimeSpan -h 3 -m 31) That does almost the same thing, but the resulting XML lacks the <clear/> element that is created with via the GUI, which I believe is necessary to avoid inheriting any default values. This sort of collection (with "add", "remove", and "clear" elements) seems to be fairly standard in the config files, but I can't seem to find any good documentation on how to interact with them consistently.

  • Can I specify which VCS module or adaptor is used by a Luntbuild buiulder or schedule?

    I have luntbuild set up and working great for my project, with several different builder schedules running on trunk. Now, I just created a branch, and I want to add at least one schedule (and corresponding builder, if necessary) to build that branch (I want the branch built separately from trunk). Is this possible? Some others in my company have just created separate projects in Luntbuild for their branches, but I feel like that might not be the ideal solution. So, to reiterate, I want to build this branch continuously. If I just add a second module to the current setup, it tries to build both trunk and the branch together. I want them build separately. Thanks for any insight! EDIT: The bounty is about to end, and still no answers. I have worked around the original problem by creating a new project in LB, but I feel like there must be a better way.

I know that this would do this the job alarms.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP,triggerAtTime, interval,alarmIntent); But what is confusing me is what to put in the triggerAtTime and the interval.It says System.currentTimeMillis() timebase. I might be installing the app on any day so the TriggerAtTime should be midnight of that day and the interval would be 24 hours from there on.   • Group Policy Task Schedule deployed to User Configuration not working, works when in Computer Configuration?

    I added a Scheduled Task on my Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller in the Group Policy Manager: MyDomain Policy User Configuration Preferences Control Panel Settings Scheduled Tasks Basic Task, like starting notepad, when user unlocks his workstation. This should show up in the client workstation's task scheduler, but it dosn't. No errors or anything like that. If I use the "Computer Configuration" instead of "User Configuration" the task appears, and I'm able to run the task. I've tried the gpupdate /force followed by gpresult and checked the report, but it dosn't contain the GPO Scheduled Tasks I created? (again, does show up when using "Computer Configuration".) The issue is that I have to run the application in the current users context, and only on a specific Employee OU, and thereby limit this task only to Employee Workstations and not apply the application when the same employee log on to internal servers and such. Primary domain dontroller is a Windows 2008 R2, workstations Windows 7 Enterprise. What am I doing wrong ?

  • IIS7.5 App Pool recycling. What is the best schedule for Recycling

    I have been using IIS7.5 Since its release. I am also using commerce server 2007sp2. Due to Commerce Servers Need for memory and processor I have the app pool the website is assigned to recycling at midnight every night. My Question is what is the best time table to recycle heavy web app pools? I am looking to keep speed and not bump potential customers while recycling multiple times a day if possible. Another issue is that every few days the same app pool will hang and I have to force a reset of IIS to get it working again.

    I'm looking to find a way to update some Windows Defender settings via command line, gpo etc. From my research it looks like windows defender creates a hidden scheduled task named 'MP Scheduled Scan', but modifying this task does not seem to make a difference as to what shows up in the Windows Defender UI. I have also done some process monitoring to see what data Windows Defender uses and I can see that it reads/writes to the 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan' ScheduleDay key, but if I attempt to modify this key, I get an "Error Writing the new values contents" error message.

  • What is the best time to schedule regular updates on inhouse production server?

    Given an inhouse server running in production mode I would like to keep the impact on the users as low as possible when deploying regular updates (to the server itself, not the user machines .. but that would be a pretty similar problem). The obvious answer to my question is "at night, when the users are at home". But "night" is a long period of time. Should one start early in the evening to perhaps catch problems with the update early on and be ready to rollback? Or is it better to start early in the morning and use the first users as "guinea pigs" to faster trigger the problems? Or in the middle of the night when the concentration of the one overseeing the update is pretty low but it is guaranteed to have no open file handles of some late working users? Are there any research papers on the topic?

    I run a job every minute to reindex my site's content. Today, the search engine died, and when I logged in there were hundreds of orphan processes that had been started by cron. Is there another way using some kind of existing software that will let me execute a job every minute, but that won't launch another instance if that job doesn't return (i.e. because the search engine process has failed)?
