• Reliability of S.M.A.R.T.?

  I've been using ActiveSmart to monitor my hard-drives health for a few weeks now, and its telling me my brand new 1.5 TB hard-drive is half-dead already. About on-par with one of my hard-drives which I know is at least half dead because I've been having some read errors and heard ticking noises. Now I haven't actually noticed any problems with my 1.5 TB drive; should I be concerned that it's going to crap out on me too? Or could ActiveSmart be giving a mis-diagnosis because I use it a lot or something (I've used up 795 GB in the 2 and a half weeks I've had it). The events that ActiveSmart has been catching is "Hardware ECC recovered". Maybe these new fangled super big hard-drives somehow rely on ECCs to squeeze out the extra space, but this isn't actually a cause for concern?

  My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues? • Recommended storage scheme for home server? (LVM/JBOD/RAID 5...)

  Are there any guidelines for which storage scheme(s) makes most sense for a multiple-disk home server? I am assuming a separate boot/OS disk (so bootability is not a concern, this is for data storage only) and 4-6 storage disks of 1-2 TB each, for a total storage capacity in the range 4-12 TB. The file system is ext4, I expect there will be only one big partition spanning all disks. As far as I can tell, the alternatives are individual disks pros: works with any combination of disk sizes; losing a disk loses only the data on that disk; no need for volume management. cons: data management is clumsy when logical units (like a "movies" folder) are larger than the capacity of any single drive. JBOD span pros: can merge disks of any size. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks LVM pros: can merge disks of any size; relatively simple to add and remove disks. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks RAID 0 pros: speed cons: losing one drive loses all data; disks must be same size RAID 5 pros: data survives losing one disk cons: gives up one disk worth of capacity; disks must be same size RAID 6 pros: data survives losing two disks cons: gives up two disks worth of capacity; disks must be same size I'm primarily considering either LVM or JBOD span simply because it will let me reuse older, smaller-capacity disks when I upgrade the system. The runner-up is RAID 0 for speed. I'm planning on having full backups to a separate system, so I expect the extra redundancy from RAID levels 5 or 6 won't be important. Is this a fair representation of the alternatives? Are there other considerations or alternatives I have missed? And what would you recommend?

• How much HDD space would I need to cache the web while respecting robot.txts?

  I want to experiment with creating a web crawler. I'll start with indexing a few medium sized website like Stack Overflow or Smashing Magazine. If it works, I'd like to start crawling the entire web. I'll respect robot.txts. I save all html, pdf, word, excel, powerpoint, keynote, etc... documents (not exes, dmgs etc, just documents) in a MySQL DB. Next to that, I'll have a second table containing all restults and descriptions, and a table with words and on what page to find those words (aka an index). How much HDD space do you think I need to save all the pages? Is it as low as 1 TB or is it about 10 TB, 20? Maybe 30? 1000? Thanks

• What are the different Partition Types listed in gparted?

  I am reformatting an older 40meg drive using gparted from within a Linux distro. The drive had no partitions and no partition table, so I am creating a new Partition Table via the Advanced option. The default partition type is msdos, which I think is the same as MBR in parted. The description sounds right: maximum of 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary and 1 extended partition, maximum of 2 tb with 512b sectors. There are a number of other options, gpt being one. Which I would use if the drive was greater than 2 tb. The following partition types are also available: apx, amiga, bsd, dvh, mac, pc98, sun, loop. The question: what are these other types and where can I find a description or discussion about them? Secondary question: is there any reason to not use gpt on a smaller drive? Thank-you

• Change the update channel in Portable Thunderbird?

  I think it needs some explanation How to update a TB Portable installation to beta or aurora. I tried to change the preferences in about:config: update.channel to aurora but that had no effect. Then I edited ThunderbirdPortable3\App\thunderbird\defaults\pref\channel-prefs.js and restarted TB. There I got the message in the Help screen, that I am on update channel aurora, which seems fine. Still: the update downloaded Thunderbird 29 pre beta and tried to install but ended with the message that it couldnt be installed due to patch problems: Das Update konnte nicht installiert werden (Patch-Anwendung fehlgeschlagen) I tried this again with the channel "nightly" and got the same error. (On channel "beta" there seem to be no newer version than in the channel "release".) How can I change my installation to channel aurora and update it?

• Windows DFS Limitations

  So far I have seen an article on performance and scalability mainly focusing on how long it takes to add new links. But is there any information about limitations regarding number of files, number of folders, total size, etc? Right now I have a single file server with millions of JPGs (approx 45 TB worth) that are shared on the network through several standard file shares. I plan to create a DFS namespace and replicate all these images to another server for high availability purposes. Will I encounter extra problems with DFS that I'm otherwise not experiencing with plain-jane file shares? Is there a more recommended way to replicate these millions of files and make them available on the network? EDIT: I would experiment on my own and write a blog post about it, but I don't have the hardware for the second server yet. I'd like to collect information before buying 45 TB of hard drive space...

  I have a WD Elements 1 TB external drive. I'm in a pinch and I need an internal SATA drive. How do I find out if the drive in here is actually a SATA drive? Edit: The WD Elements is a really nice external drive. I gently pried open the top and slid out a 1 TB Caviar Green hard drive. There were four black rubber brackets that slid off easily. One screw removed the SATA -- USB, and then I slid it into my computer.

• Partition falsly recognized as RAW

  On my 2 TB data disk I have two primary partitions, one of 1.6 TB for data storage in Linux (ext3) and one of 300 GB for some additional data storage for Windows. I run a dual-boot Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 install. The issue I have that if I start my computer into Windows 7, bot the partitions on my 2TB data drive are not recognized. In stead, Windows 7 sees one 1TB partition with type RAW. However, if I reboot to Linux, and then back to Windows 7, the partitions are correctly recognized. • How many hours of use before I need to clean a tape drive?

  I do backups to a HP Ultrium 2 tape drive (HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448). The drive has a 'Clean' LED that supposedly will light up or blink when the drive needs to be cleaned. The drive has been in use since october 2005, and still the 'Clean' light has never been lit. The drive statistics are: Total hours in use: 1603 Total bytes written: 19.7 TB Total bytes read: 19.3 TB My question is: How many hours of use can I expect before I need to clean the drive? Edit: I have not encountered any errors using the drive. I do restore tests every two months, and every backup is verified. Edit 2: The user manual says: "HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape drives do not require regular cleaning. An Ultrium universal cleaning cartridge should only be used when the orange Clean LED is flashing." Update: It is now May 2010 (4.5 years of use), and the LED is still off, I have not cleaned, backups verify and regular restore tests are done.

• Binding for MinWidth property does not work in Silverlight

  I have noticed something very unusual today, I need to bind "MinWidth" property of TextBlock to some value, however following example does not work. It only accepts MinWidth at a time of creation, but after that it is not affected at all if LeftWidth property is changed at runtime, however if I bind LeftWidth property to WidthProperty it works well. Binding b = new Binding("LeftWidth"); // following never changes layout of control tb.SetBinding(TextBlock.MinWidthProperty,b); However, this one works correctly, // following never changes layout of control tb.SetBinding(TextBlock.WidthProperty,b); Now I also did hook events and tried to do InvalidateMeasure and InvalidateArrange on TextBlock, but it has no effect. Seems like Changing MinWidth Property after layout pass does not work at all. Can it be a bug in Silverlight? or Does anyone have any idea at all why MinWidth does not redo the layout?

• Stored procedure called from C# executes 6 times longer than from SQL Management studio

  I have search stored procedure which is my performance bottleneck. In order to get control about what is happened, I added logging for all parameters and also execution time in SP. I noticed, that when I call SP from MIcrosoft SQL server management Studio execution time is 1.3-1.6 seconds, but when i call it from C#, it takes 6-8 secods (!!!) • DataGridView cells not editable when using an outside thread call

  Hi, I'm not able to edit my datagridview cells when a number of identical calls takes place on another thread. Here's the situation: Dataset table is created in the main window The program receives in files and processes them on a background thread in class TorrentBuilder : BackgroundWorker creating an array objects of another class Torrent My program receives those objects from the BW result and adds them into the dataset The above happens either on my main window thread or in another thread: I have a separate thread watching a folder for files to come in, and when they do come in, they proceed to call TorrentBuilder.RunWorkerAsynch() from that thread, receive the result, and call an outside class that adds the Torrent objects into the table. When the files are received by the latter thread, the datagridview isn't editable. All of the values come up properly into the datagridview, but when I click on a cell to edit it: I can write letters and everything, but when I click out of it, it immediately reverts back to its original value. If I restart the program, I can edit the same cells just fine. If the values are freshly added from the main window thread, I can edit the cells just fine. The outside thread is called from my main window thread, and sits there in the background. I don't believe it to be ReadOnly because I would have gotten an exception. • Reconstructing the disk order in RAID 6 with 7 disks

  a little background to this question first: I am running a RAID-6 within a QNAP TS869L external RAID/NAS system. I started with 5 disks of 3 TB each back in the day, and later added another 2 disks of 3TB to the RAID. The QNAP internals handled the growing and re-syncing etc, and everything seemd to be perfectly fine. About 2 weeks ago, I had one of the disks (disk #5, disk #2 has gone bad in the mean time) fail, and somehow (I have no idea why), also disks 1 and 2 got kicked out of the array. I replaced disk #5, but the RAID didn't start working again. After some calls to QNAP technical support, they re-created the array (using mdadm --create --force --assume-clean ...), but the resulting array couldn't find a filesystem, and I was kindly referred to contact a data recovery company that I can't afford. After some digging through old log files, resetting the disk to factory default, etc, I found a few errors that were made during this re-create - I wish I still had some of the original metadata, but unfortunately i don't (I definitely learned that lesson). I'm currently at the point where I know the correct chunk-size (64K), metadata-version (1.0; factory default was 0.9, but from what I read 0.9 doesn't handle disks over 2 TB, mine are 3 TB), and I now find the ext4 filesystem that should be on the disks. Only variable left to determine is the right disk order! I started using the description found in answer #4 of "Recover RAID 5 data after created new array instead of re-using" but am a little confused on what the order should be for a proper RAID-6. RAID-5 is pretty well documented in a number of places, but RAID-6 much less so. Also, does the layout, i.e. distribution of parity and data chunks across the disks, change after the growing of the array from 5 to 7 disks, or does the re-sync re-organize them in such a way a native 7-disk RAID-6 would have been?
