• What is a "Public DNS registered IP address"?

  I've been reading this ICANN agreement on new TLDs and it has this section on DNS service availability, which i don't completely understand: Refers to the ability of the group of listed-as-authoritative name servers of a particular domain name (e.g., a TLD), to answer DNS queries from DNS probes. For the service to be considered available at a particular moment, at least, two of the delegated name servers registered in the DNS must have successful results from “DNS tests” to each of their public-DNS registered “IP addresses” to which the name server resolves. If 51% or more of the DNS testing probes see the service as unavailable during a given time, the DNS service will be considered unavailable. I'm not 100% sure of the part in bold: does "public" refer to the DNS or to the IP addesses? It looks like there's a mistake and that the hyphen should have been after "DNS". So basically does it mean "the public IP addresses registered in the DNS"?

The only command that I know to run to find out any information is lspci, which tells me that I have 02:00.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23885 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 04) I've looked at using Me TV, but haven't worked out how to configure it for my card, or what I need to do to get it running. I'm not fussed on what software I use to run the Capture Card, but I've currently got only Me TV installed.   I have set up a new PC and installed cygwin on it. Its windows 7 pro. I have already done a lot of research on this problem. I have already uninstalled and installed cygwin more than 5 times. Done rebaseall everytime I installed it. Checked for possible BLODA, I had notron antivirus, which I have removed. As an aside, I tried posting this question to cygwin mailing list after subscribing to it. But my mail does not appear on the list. I suppose they want address to be munged and I have no clue how to do it. supposedly, they are treating it as a spam. Any idea how I can post to the mailing list there.

• 'License expired' error when dynamically generating Excel docs in ASP.NET

  Anyone familiar with error below? When I run my webapp to generate a dynamic excel doc from my local machine it works fine but when the same piece of code is invoked on the server I get the below error. It seems like it's a permissions issues since it works on my machine but not the server but I don't know where to start in order to pinpoint the problem. Any guidance/help is greatly appreciated!   Okay, I seriously cannot figure this out. I have a DLL project in MSVC that is attempting to use Asio (from Boost 1.45.0), but whenever I create my io_service, an exception is thrown.   Search Crawling is error out on my MOSS 2007 installation. I get the following error for all the web apps I have following error in Crawl logs. http://mysites.devserver URL could not be resolved. The host may be unavailable, or the proxy settings are not configured correctly on the index server. The Application Event log also has the following corresponding error The start address http://mysites.devserver cannot be crawled. Context: Application 'SSPMain', Catalog 'Portal_Content' Details: The URL of the item could not be resolved. The repository might be unavailable, or the crawler proxy settings are not configured. To configure the crawler proxy settings, use the Proxy and Timeout page in search administration. (0x80041221) I'm using Windows 2008 server. I tried accessing the site using the above mentioned url and its available. I did the registry setting for loop back issue found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861 still not luck. Any Ideas?

• PHP pages working slow from time to time

  I have VPS with limit of 2GB of ram and 8 CPU cores. I have 5 sites on that VPS (one of them is just for testing, no visitors exept me). All 5 sites are image galleries, like wallpaper sites. Last week I noticed problem on one site (main domain, used for name servers, and also with most traffic, visitors). That site has two image galleries, one is old static html gallery made few years ago and another, main, is powered by ZENPhoto CMS. Also I have that same gallery CMS on another two sites on that same VPS (on one running site and on one just for testing site). On other two sites I have diferent PHP driven gallery. Problem is that after some time (it vary from 10 minutes to few hours after apache restart), loading of pages on main site becomes very slow, or I get 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error. So pages becomes unavailable. But just that part with new CMS gallery, old part of site with static html pages are working fast and just fine. Also other two sites with same CMS gallery and other two with different PHP driven gallery are working fine and fast at the same time. I thought it must be something with CMS on that main site, because other sites are working nice. Then I tryed to open contact and guest book pages on that main site which are outside of that CMS but also PHP pages, and they do not load too, but that same contact php scipts are working on other sites at the same time. So, when site starts to hangs, ONLY PHP generated content is not working, like I said other static pages are working. And, ONLY on that one main site I have problems. Then I need to restart Apache, after restart everything is vorking nice and fast, for some time, than again, just PHP pages on main site are becomming slower. If I do not restart apache that slowness take some time (several minutes, hours, depending ot traffic) and during that time PHP diven content is loading very slow or unavailable on that site. After sime time, on moments everything start to work and is fast again for some time, and again. In hours with more traffic PHP content is loading slowly or it is unavailable, in hours with less traffic it is sometimes fast and sometimes little bit slower than usually. And ones again, only on that main site, and only PHP driven pages, static pages are working fast even in most traffic hours also other sites with even same CMS are working fast. Currently I have about 7000 unique visitors on that site but site worked nice even with 11500 visitors per day. And about 17000 in total visitors on VPS, all sites ( about 3 pages per unique visitor). • Windows 7 IIS problem

  Hi, the thing is that I just installed IIS in my Windows 7 computer to test it out, but I'm getting this error as soon as I try to load the localhost on my web browser: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. I found this solution but it didn't work. Anyone has an idea of what's going on? Thanks! More Info: I checked on the Application Pools, as soon as I go to http://localhost/ it stops the application pool of thw website I try.

• Configuring HAProxy with memcache with failover

  I'm configuring a new set of servers for an existing Wordpress site, and it's been requested that memcache be available and made more resilient. The idea proposed is to have HAProxy send requests to one of the two servers; if that memcache instance is inaccessible, then it should switch to the second, but should not switch back to the first if it comes back up unless the second is then unavailable. This doesn't appear to be a particularly common use case and I've not found much along these lines except to possibly set up the first node with an enormous rise value, such as: server server1 10.112.58.16:11211 check inter 5s fall 3 rise 99999999 server server2 10.112.58.19:11211 check backup which falls over as expected when server1 is unavailable. It won't ever fall back to server1, though, even if server2 goes offline. Can this be made to work?

  If I use runas /user:DOMAIN\user cmd.exe (using XP), previously mapped persistent network drives are considered unavailable. net use shows: Status Local Remote Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unavailable H: \\SERVER\SHARE Microsoft Windows Network dir H: fails with "The system cannot find the path specified.". The connection is easily revived with `NET USE H: \SERVER\SHARE': not asked for a password when I do this. What is going on? Can I make Windows safely revive this drive automatically when it is first accessed.

• Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

  I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

  Let's say example.com is my real site, and fooexample.com is the porn site. fooexample.com are pointing to my ip. Now you could think, just don't mind it right. Well the thing is that they are driving load of traffic. Not only that, but my main domain example.com become unavailable after a couple of minutes and the only domain that work is either fooexample.com or none of those 2. What i have done so far was using mod_rewrite to redirect the porn site to google but my domain still become unavailable. Blocking the ips served no result either. I hope someone will be able to help me because this is a huge problem right now. Thanks.

  Every now and then, often when I write a post on my Dreamhost DreamPress WordPress blog I get this Varnish related error: Error 503 Service Unavailable Service Unavailable Guru Meditation: XID: 180706672 Varnish cache server I did a related post here Varnish & ISPConfig under Debian give error 503 but they only tell me it could be an Apache Virtual Hosts issue and that the defined hosts should be checked. But that thread was on a different XID and just a comment, not an accepted solution. So perhaps this situation is different. Any ideas?

• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer? • Postfix not delivering mails

  Hi all, I have problems with a recently configured postfix MTA. When postfix starts the following warning appears: "postfix/qmgr[5078]: warning: connect to transport private/filter: No such file or directory" I have amavis-new as a content-filter, but even if I comment-out the relevant line, the warning appears. As a result (I think), of the above, I get errors like below, for every virtual domain that I have: "postfix/error[5080]: 254851834107: to=, relay=none, delay=13082, delays=13082/0.01/0/0.01, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (mail transport unavailable)" The good news for me, is that somehow I managed to fix that (don't ask me how!!!!) The problem is that now I have 50 or so mails, that were affected by the aforementioned problem, in the mail-queue... If I "postqueue -f " I get the same style of error as before (mail transport unavailable)...however new mails are delivered to their final destination properly... Any suggestions? Kind regards. P.S. Local mail delivery from/to Unix and virtual users, was OK write from the beginning!

When postfix starts the following warning appears: "postfix/qmgr[5078]: warning: connect to transport private/filter: No such file or directory" I have amavis-new as a content-filter, but even if I comment-out the relevant line, the warning appears. As a result (I think), of the above, I get errors like below, for every virtual domain that I have: "postfix/error[5080]: 254851834107: to=, relay=none, delay=13082, delays=13082/0.01/0/0.01, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (mail transport unavailable)" The good news for me, is that somehow I managed to fix that (don't ask me how!!!!) The problem is that now I have 50 or so mails, that were affected by the aforementioned problem, in the mail-queue... If I "postqueue -f " I get the same style of error as before (mail transport unavailable)...however new mails are delivered to their final destination properly... Any suggestions? Kind regards. P.S. Local mail delivery from/to Unix and virtual users, was OK write from the beginning!

• Exclude localhost from htt_proxy

  I'm trying to access a server that is running locally on my machine (localhost). I'm using the "wget"-command to download the servers http-response. I've also tried using the "curl"-command to do this, but both (wget and curl) are trying to get through my proxy-server and failing at it: --2010-05-04 09:05:34-- http://localhost:8080/api/getplist ... Proxy request sent, awaiting response... 503 Service Unavailable 2010-05-04 09:05:35 ERROR 503: Service Unavailable. Obviously they shouldn't need to go through the proxy, right? So I disabled the http_proxy: export http_proxy="" And then it worked fine. Disabling the the http_proxy every time or permanently are no options. How can I set it to ignore the proxy settings when accessing "localhost"?

• Can't connect to web-server on local host behind NAT

  I got Ubuntu as host. I'm running a web-server on http://192.168.199.8:80. It is accessible from the local network, but when I'm trying to reach it by external IP, I go to my router's web-page. I arranged port forwarding on router for port 80 to my local IP 192.168.199.8. Unfortunately web-server is still unavailable via external IP. I checked whether the port is open via http://www.canyouseeme.org/. As it showed that the port is unavailable, I changed port used to 3659 (not forget to rearrange port forwarding rule). Although http://www.canyouseeme.org/ shows that port 3659 is open, I still can't reach my web-server. Where can the problem be?

• Network connection fails when downloading data

  In the past few weeks, I've noticed my network connection becoming unstable while downloading files. I'm not sure how to diagnose this issue. I've found that my network connections appear to be temporarily unresponsive (for periods up to a minute or so) while I'm downloading a file (that's large enough to not be downloaded instantly). The problem occurs when downloading data through a webbrowser, but also when using SCP to download data from a remote location. During the period in which network connections are unresponsive, every resource that I try to access over the network is unavailable. This includes: The download itself (SCP reports a 'stalled' download) Web pages (won't load - browsers report 'resource unavailable') SSH sessions (CLI freezes) VPN connections (connections terminate) IM client connections (client starts reconnection attempts) ... (everything is pretty much dead) I've noticed that during such a period, I cannot even access the (web-based) administrative console of the router on my LAN at home (although it remains reachable for other devices). The problem occurs when connected to my home network, but also when I'm in the office. Other devices than my laptop are not affected. Given the above two characteristics I assume the problem cause lies within my laptop, not the network infrastructure. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Apart from applying automatic updates from Ubuntu, I can't think of a change that I applied to the OS that could have started the problems. I'm absolutely positive that this issue did not occur up to a few weeks ago (as it's very noticeable, and only started to annoy me in the last few days). When the problem occurs, applications that make use of a network connection fail visibly (I get popups telling me that a VPN connection is broken, for instance). The network manager does not report any issues related to my wifi-connection though. Help?
