• How do I load the Oracle schema into memory instead of the hard drive?

  I have a certain web application that makes upwards of ~100 updates to an Oracle database in succession. This can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, which sometimes causes the webpage to time out. A re-design of the application is scheduled soon but someone told me that there is a way to configure a "loader file" which loads the schema into memory and runs the transactions there instead of on the hard drive, supposedly improving speed by several orders of magnitude. I have tried to research this "loader file" but all I can find is information about the SQL* bulk data loader. Does anyone know what he's talking about? Is this really possible and is it a feasible quick fix or should I just wait until the application is re-designed?

• send dbmail on @@error from sql server 2005

  Hi, I am trying to send database mail when error occurs inside the transaction.My setup for dbo.sp_send_dbmail is correct , when I execute the proc I do get an email within 1 min. However when I try to use dbo.sp_send_dbmail inside another proc within transactions than I do not get the email. Sql server does show in the result window that "Mail queued" but I never receive it. • Running Sybase ISQL scripts from windows batch file

  I have already researched on this site as well as on google extensively for this. • .Net opening and closing database connections

  I designed the data access portion of our framework so that every time a business object needs to interact with the database it would have to open a connection, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query), and then close the connection. Then if it needed to run in a transaction it would open the connection, begin the transaction, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query) and then commit the transaction, close the transaction, and finally close the connection. I did it this way with the mindset of open late and close early... but what if I needed to call other BO's to submit data in a single transaction? Is there a better way to handle opening and closing connections as well as working with transactions? I'm a rookie in designing application architecture so I hope I'm not doing this wrongly... any help is appreciated.

  Hello, I want to develop a POS application in .NET (C#) that would be used to rent items. I have a good idea of what will be done and the famous question that I have is about the DBMS that I should use. I would like to use MySQL database. The question is: If some places use only one computer (no network, no internet connection), can I use a MySQL database in local? Do I need to install MySQL server on all thoses computers to be able to use such a database? I know SQLite but I'm not sure if the limitations can cause problems in the future... I also looked at SQLServer Express versions. (I must consider that other point of sales are using multiple computers and more transactions so there I can't put sqlexpress or sqlite) So can anybody suggest me what I should do in that situation? • setTimeout in javascript not giving browser 'breathing room'

  Alright, I thought I had this whole setTimeout thing perfect but I seem to be horribly mistaken. I'm using excanvas and javascript to draw a map of my home state, however the drawing procedure chokes the browser. Right now I'm forced to pander to IE6 because I'm in a big organisation, which is probably a large part of the slowness. So what I thought I'd do is build a procedure called distributedDrawPolys (I'm probably using the wrong word there, so don't focus on the word distributed) which basically pops the polygons off of a global array in order to draw 50 of them at a time. This is the method that pushes the polygons on to the global array and runs the setTimeout: for (var x = 0; x < polygon.length; x++) { coordsObject.push(polygon[x]); fifty++; if (fifty > 49) { timeOutID = setTimeout(distributedDrawPolys, 5000); fifty = 0; } } I put an alert at the end of that method, it runs in practically a second. • Using persistent and non-persistent connection together in a PHP MySQL app

  There are parts of my app where a persistent connection is required, in particular the parts where every hour maybe 30,000 select requests are made by many different users, this is causing my mysql server to max out on the 100 connection limit, and i really don't want to increase it since 100 connections already seems like alot. So for the parts of the application where reading and selecting is the case I want to switch to persistent connections. The other parts where data is being modified is usually done through a transaction, and the general rule is never to use persistent connections for transactions according to the php documentation. So I would like to keep this on non-persistent connections. My question is, am i able to use persistent and non-persistent connections together in the same app, the same script etc? I am using PHP 5.2+, MySQL 5+ (InnoDB tables) and the Zend Framework 10.6+

• Why might SQL execute more quickly on SQL Server 2000 when NOT using a stored procedure?

  I could see nothing wrong with the execution plan. Besides, as I understand it, SQL Server 2000 extended many of the performance benefits of stored procedures to all SQL statements by recognising new T-SQL statements against T-SQL statements of existing execution plans (by retaining execution plans for all SQL statements in the procedure cache, not just stored procedure execution plans) It's a fairly straight forward SELECT statement with sensible table joins, no transactions included or linked servers being referenced within the query and WITH (NOLOCK) table hints applied. The stored procedure was created by dbo and the user has all the necessary permissions. So my question is this: What are the likely reasons for a query to take only a few seconds to run but then take several minutes when identical T-SQL is run via a stored procedure?

  Let's say a security tester uses a proxy, say Fiddler, and records an HTTPS request using the administrator's credentials-- on replay of the entire request (including session and auth cookies) the security tester is able to succesfully (re)record transactions. The claim is that this is a sign of a CSRF vulnerability. What would a malicious user have to do to intercept the HTTPS request and replay it? It this a task for script kiddies, well funded military hacking teams or time-traveling-alien technology? Is it really so easy to record the SSL sessions of users and replay them before the tickets expire? No code in the application currently does anything interesting on HTTP GET, so AFAIK, tricking the admin into clicking a link or loading a image with a malicious URL isn't an issue.

  I have a function that returns a table. The returned table contains (among other things) a store_id. I can get the store_id for a particular transaction_id and city_id as follows: select store_id from table(f_get_store(city_id, transaction_id)); I have another table that contains a list of transactions (which includes transaction_id and city_id). I want a query that returns store_id, city_id, transaction_id for every entry in the transaction table. My first guess was: select f_get_store(city_id, transaction_id), city_id, transaction_id from table; (simplified away the unimportant details) However, this yields an "ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes" error. How do I need to structure this query? (I'm using Oracle)

  Hello, First of all sorry that I could not think of a more descriptive title. What I want to do is the following using only SQL: I have some lists of strings, list1, list2 and list3. I have a dataset that contains two interesting columns, A and B. Column A contains a TransactionID and column B contains an ItemID. Naturally, there can be multiple rows that share the same TransactionIDs. I need to catch those transactions that have at least one ItemID in each and every list (list1 AND list2 AND list3). I also need to count how many times does that happen for each transaction. [EDIT] That is, count how many full sets of ItemIDs there are for each TransactionID", "Full Set" being any element of the list1 with any element of the list2 with any element of the list3 I hope that makes enough sense, perhaps I will be able to explain it better with a clear head. • Rails Unit Testing with MyISAM Tables

  I've got an application that requires the use of MyISAM on a few tables, but the rest are the traditional InnoDB type. The application itself is not concerned with transactions where it applies to these records, but performance is a concern. The Rails testing environment assumes the engine used is transactional, though, so when the test database is generated from the schema.rb it is imported with the same engine. Is it possible to over-ride this behaviour in a simple manner? I'm interested in creating my own website, or possibly just a stand alone windows program for tracking my finances in ASP.NET or C#.NET. I'm assuming the answer is no, but is there any way that a personal developer can download transactions from financial websites like these? • How to determine whether a .NET exception is being handled?

  We're investigating a coding pattern in C# in which we'd like to use a "using" clause with a special class, whose Dispose() method does different things depending on whether the "using" body was exited normally or with an exception. To the best of my understanding, the CLR keeps track of the current exception being handled until it's been consumed by a "catch" handler. However it's not entirely clear whether this information is exposed in any way for the code to access. Do you know whether it is, and if so, how to access it? For example: using (var x = new MyObject()) { x.DoSomething(); x.DoMoreThings(); } class MyObject : IDisposable { public void Dispose() { if (ExceptionIsBeingHandled) Rollback(); else Commit(); } } This looks almost like System.Transactions.TransactionScope, except that success/failure is not determined by a call to x.Complete(), but rather based on whether the using body was exited normally.

• xsl:include fails after upgrading PHP version; is libxml/libxslt version mismatch the issue?

  I'm running Windows XP with the precompiled PHP binaries available from windows.php.net. I upgraded from PHP 5.2.5 to PHP 5.2.16, and now the xsl:includes in some of my stylesheets stopped working. Testing each version in succession, I discovered that it worked up through 5.2.8 and does not work in 5.2.9+. I now get the following three errors for each xsl:include. Warning: XSLTProcessor::importStylesheet() [xsltprocessor.importstylesheet]: I/O warning : failed to load external entity "file%3A/C%3A/path/to/included/stylesheet.xsl" in ... on line 227 Warning: XSLTProcessor::importStylesheet() [xsltprocessor.importstylesheet]: compilation error: file file%3A//C%3A/path/to/included/stylesheet.xsl line 36 element include in ... on line 227 Warning: XSLTProcessor::importStylesheet() [xsltprocessor.importstylesheet]: xsl:include : unable to load file%3A/C%3A/path/to/included/stylesheet.xsl in ... on line 227 I presume this is because it cannot find the specified file. Many of the includes are in the same directory as the stylesheet being transformed and have no directory in the path, i.e. <xsl:include href="fileInSameDir.xsl">. Interestingly, in the first and third errors, it is displaying the file:// protocol with only one slash instead of the correct two. I'm guessing that's the problem. (When I hard-code a full path using "file:/" it fails, but when I hard-code a full path with "file://" it works.) But what could cause that? A bug in libxslt/libxml? I also found an apparent version mismatch between libxml and the version of libxml that libxslt was compiled against. 5.2.5 libxml Version = 2.6.26 libxslt compiled against libxml Version = 2.6.26 5.2.8 libxml Version = 2.6.32 libxslt compiled against libxml Version = 2.6.32 === it breaks in versions starting at 5.2.9 === 5.2.9 libxml Version = 2.7.3 libxslt compiled against libxml Version = 2.6.32 5.2.16 libxml Version = 2.7.7 libxslt compiled against libxml Version = 2.6.32 Up until PHP 5.2.9, libxslt was compiled against the same version of libxml that was included with PHP. But starting with PHP 5.2.9, libxslt was compiled against an older version of libxml than that which was included with PHP. Is this a problem with the distributed binaries or just a coincidence? To test this, I imagine PHP could be built with different versions of libxml/libxslt to see which combinations work or don't. Unfortunately, I'm out of my element in a Windows world, and building PHP on Windows seems over my head. Regrettably, I've been thus far unable to reproduce this problem with an example outside my app, so I'm struggling to narrow it down and can't submit a specific bug. So, do you think it is caused by a version mismatch problem in the distributed binaries? a bug introduced in PHP 5.2.9? a bug introduced in libxml 2.7? something else? I'm stumped. Any thoughts that could point me in the right direction are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  Im currently uploading data to MS SQL server via SQLBulkCopy and Transactions. I would like to be able to raise an event after each batch has been uploaded (I have already tried SQLRowsCopied event and it doesnt work, see quote below) MSDN quote: No action, such as transaction activity, is supported in the connection during the execution of the bulk copy operation, and it is recommended that you not use the same connection used during the SqlRowsCopied event. • Is it a good idea to "migrate business logic code into our domain model"?

  I am reading Hibernate in Action and the author suggests to move business logic into our domain models (p. 306). For instance, in the example presented by the book, we have three entities named Item, Bid, and User and the author suggests to add a placeBid(User bidder, BigDecimal amount) method to the Item class. Considering that usually we have a distinct layer for business logic (e.g. Manager or Service classes in Spring) that among other things control transactions, etc. is this really a good advice? Isn't it better not to add business logic methods to our entities? Thanks in advance.

  Hi All, long time listener, first time caller. I use SPs and this isn't an SP vs code-behind "Build your SQL command" question. I'm looking for a high-throughput method for a backend app that handles many small transactions. I use SQLDataReader for most of the returns since forward only works in most cases for me. I've seen it done many ways, and used most of them myself. Methods that define and accept the stored procedure parameters as parameters themselves and build using cmd.Parameters.Add (with or without specifying the DB value type and/or length) Assembling your SP params and their values into an array or hashtable, then passing to a more abstract method that parses the collection and then runs cmd.Parameters.Add Classes that represent tables, initializing the class upon need, setting the public properties that represent the table fields, and calling methods like Save, Load, etc I'm sure there are others I've seen but can't think of at the moment as well. I'm open to all suggestions.
