  • Cannot establish Wired connection on Acer Aspire 5930G

    - by drakos46
    I use an Acer Aspire 5930G, dual booted with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. My problem is that i cannot establish wired connection on my ubuntu. Wireless connection works in both of my OSs but the Wired connection does not, only on the Ubuntu. I have already tried the common fix: echo on | sudo tee /sys/class/net/eth0/device/power/control but without any results. Any ideas? eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1d:72:c2:21:a5 inet6 addr: fe80::21d:72ff:fec2:21a5/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:945 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:204318 (204.3 KB) Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:7241 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:7241 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:645874 (645.8 KB) TX bytes:645874 (645.8 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:ea:57:7b:cc inet addr:192.168.2.2 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::216:eaff:fe57:7bcc/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:19937 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16933 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:10877245 (10.8 MB) TX bytes:3131378 (3.1 MB) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 16)

  • XNA Windows Resolution / Mouse Position Bug

    - by Ian Hern
    In XNA, when in windowed mode and resolution (set via PreferredBackBufferWidth/Height) is close to the resolution of the display, the view is distorted (zoomed in a bit)and the mouse coordinates are wrong. Here is what it looks like when I draw a bunch of lines to the screen. (Normal, Error on my ASUS Notebook G73Jh, Error on my EEE PC 1001P) In the top left of the screen the mouse position is correct, but the further you get away the more out of sync it becomes. Here are some images of the mouse in different positions and the game drawing a circle underneath where it thinks the mouse is. (Top Left, Bottom Right) If you shrink the resolution by a couple pixels then it goes back to working like normal, my first though at a fix was to limit the max resolution to a little smaller than the display resolution. I figured out the maximum resolution that works in a couple different modes, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern that would allow me to determine it based off the display resolution. Computer | Screen Resolution | Max Error-Free | Difference ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1920x1080 | 1924x1059 | +4x-21 ASUS Notebook G73Jh | 1024x600 | 1018x568 | -6x-32 EEE PC 1001P | 1024x600 | 1020x574 | -4x-26 Because the differences don't form a pattern I can't hack in a solution, the one even has +4 which baffles me. Here is a project that demonstrates the problem, just set the resolution to the resolution of your display. Any ideas on how I might fix this issue? As an insteresting aside, I tried to use FRAPS to capture a video of the issue but fraps actually records without distortion or mouse offset.

Two KM articles reflect Oracles policy towards the use of VMware: 249212.1 and 475484.1 . The bottom line is: “you may use it at your own risk, but Oracle does not recommend it”. So far we have seen few problems with the use of VMware (other than performance and the usual limitations) but Oracle does not certify its software for the use in VMware (and specifically for RAC Software actively refuses any support) and any issue that may occur will be fixed for the native OS only. It is on the customer to prove that the issue is NOT due to VMware in case that an issue is encountered. • Using Coherence API to get POF bytes

    - by Bruno.Borges
    Someone raised the question on how to use the Coherence API to get the bytes of an object in POF (Portable Object Format) programatically. So I came up with this small code that shows the very cool API simple usage :-)   SimplePofContext spc = new SimplePofContext();    spc.registerUserType(0, User.class, new UserSerializer());    // consider UserSerializer as an implementation of PofSerializer            User u = new User();    u.setId(21);    u.setName("Some Name");    u.setEmail("[email protected]");            ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();    DataOutput dataOutput = new DataOutputStream(baos);    BufferOutput bufferOutput = new WrapperBufferOutput(dataOutput);    spc.serialize(bufferOutput, u);            byte[] byteArray = baos.toByteArray();    System.out.println(Arrays.toString(byteArray));  Easy, isn't?

  • Restoring GRUB2 on Software RAID 0 using LiveCD after Windows 7 wiped it

    - by unknownthreat
    I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ] grub> root (hd0,0) root (hd0,0) Error 21: Selected disk does not exist grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 find /boot/grub/stage1 Error 15: File not found Fortunately, I got one person suggesting that what I've been trying to do is for GRUB Legacy, not GRUB2. So I went to the suggested website, ** (http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide) **try to look around, and try: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Unable to seek on /dev/sda This is just the step 2 of the instruction in the http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide and I cannot proceed because it cannot seek /dev/sda. However, ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -r /dev/sdb: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 /dev/sda: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 So what now? Do you have an idea for how to make fdisk see my RAID array on live cd (Ubuntu 10.10)? Honestly, I am lost, very lost in trying to restore GRUB2 on this software RAID 0 system right now.

  • RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Hooking Up Your Wires for Java

    - by hinkmond
    So, you bought your blue jumper wires, your LEDs, your resistors, your breadboard, and your fill of Fry's for the day. How do you hook this cool stuff up to write Java code to blink them LEDs? I'll step you through it. First look at that pinout diagram of the GPIO header that's on your RPi. Find the pins in the corner of your RPi board and make sure to orient it the right way. The upper left corner pin should have the characters "P1" next to it on the board. That pin next to "P1" is your Pin #1 (in the diagram). Then, you can start counting left, right, next row, left, right, next row, left, right, and so on: Pins # 1, 2, next row, 3, 4, next row, 5, 6, and so on. Take one blue jumper wire and connect to Pin # 3 (GPIO0). Connect the other end to a resistor and then the other end of the resistor into the breadboard. Each row of grouped-together holes on a breadboard are connected, so plug in the short-end of a common cathode LED (long-end of a common anode LED) into a hole that is in the same grouping as where the resistor is plugged in. Then, connect the other end of the LED back to Pin # 6 (GND) on the RPi GPIO header. Now you have your first LED connected ready for you to write some Java code to turn it on and off. (As, extra credit you can connect 7 other LEDs the same way to with one lead to Pins # 5, 7, 11, 13, 15, 19 & 21). Whew! That wasn't so bad, was it? Next blog post on this thread will have some Java source code for you to try... Hinkmond

  • How to Generate a Create Table DDL Script Along With Its Related Tables

    - by Compudicted
    Have you ever wondered when creating table diagrams in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) how slickly you can add related tables to it by just right-clicking on the interesting table name? Have you also ever needed to script those related tables including the master one? And you discovered you have dozens of related tables? Or may be no SSMS at your disposal? That was me one day. Well, creativity to the rescue! I Binged and Googled around until I found more or less what I wanted, but it was all involving T-SQL, yeah, a long and convoluted CROSS APPLYs, then I saw a PowerShell solution that I quickly adopted to my needs (I am not referencing any particular author because it was a mashup): 1: ########################################################################################################### 2: # Created by: Arthur Zubarev on Oct 14, 2012 # 3: # Synopsys: Generate file containing the root table CREATE (DDL) script along with all its related tables # 4: ########################################################################################################### 5:   6: [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName('Microsoft.SqlServer.SMO') | out-null 7:   8: $RootTableName = "TableName" # The table name, no schema name needed 9:   10: $srv = new-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server("TargetSQLServerName") 11: $conContext = $srv.ConnectionContext 12: $conContext.LoginSecure = $True 13: # In case the integrated security is not used uncomment below 14: #$conContext.Login = "sa" 15: #$conContext.Password = "sapassword" 16: $db = New-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Database 17: $db = $srv.Databases.Item("TargetDatabase") 18:   19: $scrp = New-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Scripter($srv) 20: $scrp.Options.NoFileGroup = $True 21: $scrp.Options.AppendToFile = $False 22: $scrp.Options.ClusteredIndexes = $False 23: $scrp.Options.DriAll = $False 24: $scrp.Options.ScriptDrops = $False 25: $scrp.Options.IncludeHeaders = $True 26: $scrp.Options.ToFileOnly = $True 27: $scrp.Options.Indexes = $False 28: $scrp.Options.WithDependencies = $True 29: $scrp.Options.FileName = 'C:\TEMP\TargetFileName.SQL' 30:   31: $smoObjects = New-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.UrnCollection 32: Foreach ($tb in $db.Tables) 33: { 34: Write-Host -foregroundcolor yellow "Table name being processed" $tb.Name 35: 36: If ($tb.IsSystemObject -eq $FALSE -and $tb.Name -eq $RootTableName) # feel free to customize the selection condition 37: { 38: Write-Host -foregroundcolor magenta $tb.Name "table and its related tables added to be scripted." 39: $smoObjects.Add($tb.Urn) 40: } 41: } 42:   43: # The actual act of scripting 44: $sc = $scrp.Script($smoObjects) 45:   46: Write-host -foregroundcolor green $RootTableName "and its related tables have been scripted to the target file."   • Hijacking ASP.NET Sessions

    - by Ricardo Peres
    So, you want to be able to access other user’s session state from the session id, right? Well, I don’t know if you should, but you definitely can do that! Here is an extension method for that purpose. It uses a bit of reflection, which means, it may not work with future versions of .NET (I tested it with .NET 4.0/4.5). 1: public static class HttpApplicationExtensions 2: { 3: private static readonly FieldInfo storeField = typeof(SessionStateModule).GetField("_store", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance); 4:  5: public static ISessionStateItemCollection GetSessionById(this HttpApplication app, String sessionId) 6: { 7: var module = app.Modules["Session"] as SessionStateModule; 8:  9: if (module == null) 10: { 11: return (null); 12: } 13:  14: var provider = storeField.GetValue(module) as SessionStateStoreProviderBase; 15:  16: if (provider == null) 17: { 18: return (null); 19: } 20:  21: Boolean locked; 22: TimeSpan lockAge; 23: Object lockId; 24: SessionStateActions actions; 25:  26: var data = provider.GetItem(HttpContext.Current, sessionId.Trim(), out locked, out lockAge, out lockId, out actions); 27:  28: if (data == null) 29: { 30: return (null); 31: } 32:  33: return (data.Items); 34: } 35: } As you can see, it extends the HttpApplication class, that is because we need to access the modules collection, for the Session module. Use with care!

  • Can't see like plugin iframe on (at least) some browsers [migrated]

    - by MEM
    Not sure why. I grabbed the code from: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ And as stated there, we can read: "href - the URL to like. The XFBML version defaults to the current page. Note: After July 2013 migration, href should be an absolute URL" So I did. <body> <div> <iframe src="//www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fprojectokairos&amp;width=100&amp;height=21&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;send=false" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:100px; height:21px;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe> </div> </body> Could this be related with the fact that the page is unpublished? I hope not because I do need to place the button here and there on several pages before the FB page goes live.

  • Why has my internet speed dropped down?

    - by Door Knob
    I recently switched to Ubuntu. I've been having a lot of internet troubles ever since. I used Windows 7 before. I've had trouble loading web pages, and it would take a solid minute or two to even start displaying anything. Why is this? How can I fix this? Details: Ubuntu 14.04 ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr f0:4d:a2:2c:59:42 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:21 Memory:f7ae0000-f7b00000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:785 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:785 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:70511 (70.5 KB) TX bytes:70511 (70.5 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 14:da:e9:b0:9d:66 inet addr:192.168.2.12 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:11979 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:10503 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:13659505 (13.6 MB) TX bytes:1449698 (1.4 MB) Here's a comparison: Speedtest on my phone: Speedtest on my PC: Taken about 30 seconds apart.

  • Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 5)

    - by hinkmond
    So, here's the finished product. I have 8 networked Raspberry Pi devices strategically placed around our Oracle Santa Clara Building 21 office. I attached a JFET transistor based EMF sensor on each device to capture any strange fluctuations in the electromagnetic field (which supposedly, paranormal spirits can change as they pass by). And, I have have a Web app (embedded in this page) which can take the readings and show a graphical display in real-time. As you can see, all the Raspberry Pi devices are blinking away green, indicating they are all operational and all sensors are working correctly. But, I don't see anything... Darn... Maybe, I have to stare at the Web app for a while. I don't know when the "alleged" ghosts in our Oracle Santa Clara office are supposed to be active, but let me know if you see anything... Oh, and by the way, Happy Halloween from the Internet of Spooky Things! See the previous posts for the full series on the steps to this cool demo: Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 1) Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 2) Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 3) Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 4) Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 5) Hinkmond

  • Best Usage of Multiple Computers For a Developer

    - by whaley
    I have two Macbook Pros - both are comparable in hardware. One is a 17" and the other a 15". The 17" has a slightly swifter CPU clock speed, but beyond that the differences are completely negligible. I tried a setup a while back where I had the 17" hooked up to an external monitor in the middle of my desk with the 15" laptop immediately to the right of it, and was using teleport to control the 15" from my 17". All development, terminal usage, etc. etc. was being done on the 17" and the 15" was primarily used for email / IM / IRC... or anything secondary to what I was working on. I have a MobileMe account so preferences were synced, but otherwise I didn't really use anything else to keep the computers in sync (I use dropbox/git but probably not optimally). For reasons I can't put my finger on, this setup never felt quite right. A few things that irked me was the 15" was way under-utlized and the 17" was overutilized having 2 laptops and a 21" monitor all on one desk actually took up lots of desk space and it felt like I had too much to look at. I reverted back to just using the 17" and the external monitor and keeping the 15" around the house (and using it very sparingly). For those of you who are using multiple laptops (or just multiple machines for that matter), I'd like to see setups that work for you for when you have 2 or more machines that gives you optimal productivity and why. I'd like to give this one more shot but with a different approach than my previous - which was using the 15" as a machine for secondary things (communication, reading documentation, etc. etc).

  • VMware Kernel Module Updater hangs on Ubuntu 13.04

    VMware Player has a nice auto-detection of kernel changes, and requests the user to compile the required modules in order to load them. This happens from time to time after a regular update of your system. Usually, the dialog of VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up, asks for root access authentication, and completes the compilation. VMware Player or Workstation checks if modules for the active kernel are available. In theory this is supposed to work flawlessly but in reality there are pitfalls occassionally. With the recent upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and the latest kernel 3.8.0-21 the actual VMware Kernel Module Updater simply disappeared and the application wouldn't start as expected. When you launch VMware Player as super user (root) the dialog would stall like so: VMware Kernel Module Updater stalls while stopping the services Prior to version 5.x of VMware Player or version 7.x of VMware Workstation you would run a command like: $ sudo vmware-config.pl to resolve the module version conflict but this doesn't work anyway. Solution Instead, you have to execute the following line in a terminal or console window: $ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Those switches are (as of writing this article) not documented in the output of the --help switch. But VMware already documented this procedure in their knowledge base: VMware Workstation stops functioning after updating the kernel on a Linux host (1002411). Update As of today I had the first kernel upgrade to version 3.8.0-22 in Ubuntu 13.04. Don't even try it without vmware-modconfig...

  • Hybrid Graphics on Ubuntu 12.04 switching to discrete

    - by cfstras
    I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB-27FX with hybrid graphics. Using vgaswitcheroo enables me to switch my discrete card off to save power. Now when i want to switch to the discrete card for performance, my system freezes. I already tried logging out and killing x with service lightdm stop, but still, it freezes as soon as I echo DIS > switch. typing blindly, echo IGD > switch returns me to my console where it reads [ 179.555171] i915: switched off, but it seems the discrete card never gets switched on... running echo DDIS > switch gives me the following: [540....] [drm:atop_op_jump] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 5secs aborting [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing CEE2 (len 62, WS 0, PS 0) @ 0xCEFE [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing BBF6 (len 1036, WS 4, PS 0) @ 0xBCF3 [540....] [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing BB8C (len 76, WS 0, PS 0) @ 0xBB94 [541....] [drm:r600_RING_TEST] *ERROR* radeon: ring test failed (scratch(0x8504)=0xFFFFFFFF) [541....] [drm:evergreen_resume] *ERROR* evergreen startup failed on resume after that, the atombios part repeats a few times. also, the terminal locks up again and sysrq+REISUB is my only rescue.
