  We have a production setup where we have Squid in the front(caching images, js, css, etc) Apache httpd in the middle(prefork + mod_rewrite + mod_jk/AJP + mod_deflate + mod_php(few php pages)) Apache tomcat 5.5 at the end serving all the dynamic stuff. What would be the best way to reduce the overhead of having 3 servers in the request path ? Wondering if replacing httpd with a faster web server like nginx/lighttpd will help. httpd right now does the job of url rewriting(for clean urls) and talking to tomcat(via mod_jk) and compressing output(mod_deflate) and serving some low traffic php pages. What would be ideal replacement for httpd given that we need these features? Is there a way to replace (squid + apache) with a single entity that does caching well (like squid) for static stuff, rewrites url, compresses response and forwards dynamic stuff directly to tomcat ? heard abt varnish cache, wondering if it can help.

• Windows Vista taskbar not resizing desktop

  Hi, I recently started having a frustrating problem with Vista on my laptop that I can't seem to solve. I'm trying to get it to have the vanilla taskbar settings - always shown, resizes the desktop area (as in, the space the taskbar takes up isn't available for fullscreen windows), and always on top. No matter what combination of settings and toggles I do, I can't get it. With the normal settings that achieve this (Only keep on top, and optionally locked, checked), I get: Desktop extends behind the taskbar (so icons and the like are behind it) Non-maximised windows appear behind it when overlapping. Maximised windows take the full area of the screen and are behind the taskbar Maximised Google Chrome takes the full screen size and is in front of the taskbar I tried googling and also just randomly toggling on and off the settings, haven't found a fix.

  My team has a need to publish documentation internally. At the moment, it's spread all over the place and this means we often have to search everywhere to find something. We'd like to publish everything in one place. The main thing that stops us is access control - the wikis in place don't belong to us and we can't do it. What is the best tool for publishing docs, ideally fitting these requirements: web front end - readers access docs using browser single place to put docs access control by individual doc or by sets of docs (folders, branch of 'site', ...) if you don't have access to a doc, you don't see the link to that page/doc/folder. either built-in editor or something my users are familiar with (e.g. Word) built-in version control would be nice Also, can you think of other criteria I should've specified?

• Outlook 2010 exchange setup prompts for [email protected] rather than [email protected]

  We use a hosted exchange service. When users want to set up Outlook 2010 to access their account, they open Outlook and run through the configuration steps. Autodiscover is enabled, and in the user's active directory profile, their email address is in the email field. However, when the configuration process reaches a point where they are prompted for their email account's username and password, their active directory username is filled in by default instead of their email address. Is there a way to fix that? Users get confused and try to enter their email password over and over again and wonder why it doesn't work (and completely miss/ignore the "use another account" button even though they have instructions right in front of them). I'm also using the Office 2010 ADM's in group policy, but I haven't yet seen an option to specify what gets auto-populated in that windows security prompt.

I have mod_jk configured for Apache front end and I am able to get the Tomcat index.jsp Now I created two virtualhosts for app1 and app2 so that app1.domain.com will point to app1 in tomcat and app2.domain.com will point to app2 in Tomcat but it's not working.   THE STORY: I've installed Apache 2.2.17 , PHP 5.2.16 , MySQL 5.5.8 . The PHP woks great, the phpinfo() works on the localhost. THE PROBLEM: The thing is that in phpinfo() there is no mysql mentionened. I've done the following: moved php.ini to C:\windows removed the ";" in front of the mysql extension line ( extension=php_mysql.dll ) copied the libmysql.dll to php folder & windows\system32 checked the extension path in php.ini to be " C:\php\ext" searched the internet for a solution for about 2 hours... ADDITIONAL INFO: In the Apache Enviorment path I have the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\OJI\MinGWStudio\work\mingw\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\; I think the Microsoft SQL path should be replaced with the MySQL one, but I don't know where to change that...

• Is there an application that can do a blue screen effect with a webcam?

  Background: This is not the blue screen of death I am speaking of but the process called "Blue Screening" that takes and removes a particular colored background from an image so that it can be superimposed on some other video/still picture. If you have ever seen the weatherman stand in front of the map, then you have seen someone doing a blue screen technique. I would like to be able to capture video from my webcam, then send that video to a blue screen program which removes the white (or other color) from the background and then inserts a background of my own choosing. (think of the dead guy in freejack who was calling from all of the different places on earth) Then once the image is superimposed, I would like to pipe it into Skype for video conferencing. Anyone have a good way to do this?

  After three days of intensive Google searching, I have not found any high-level workflow of how to build a low profile - cheap - computing cluster (we are not interested in HA yet). This is just a front-end plus a node for now. We want to start small with rockscluster, provide a web-based server for offering services, and then add nodes as our budget increases. We're small company, so we haven't enough human resources to implement it smoothly. Here are some facts about our environment: Our hardware is not constant (we will add nodes).   How do I increase performance in OWA 2010 SP2? I am running CAS on a seperate installation, which has 8GB RAM and 4 CPU cores - running virtualized in a vmware environment. However, the load times are pretty bad, so is there any way to improve those? I am thinking of installing a linux cache-stuff-server in front of the OWA, but will that work?   I'm just about to set myself up with a wireless network in my house. This is so that I can intregate an internet radio into my hifi system. What I would love to do is to listen to the radio in another room of the house. I also have a little portable radio/cd player that has a USB port on the front. Is there something I could buy which would allow me to listen to the radio through my portable in another room? I do realize that I could solve this problem by buying some wireless portable speakers, however I just wondered if anybody knew another way i.e. bluetooth or something similar?

• HP proliant dl360 g5 fails to reboot

  Some history of this also available here. As of my latest update on the forum linked above, now cold reboot as well as hard reset and following boot for my proliant dl360 g5 works as expected and successfully boot the system. However, soft-reboot results in internal health indicator turning RED on the front and long beeps every around 6seconds until I either cold reboot or press and hold the power button. A summary of system state when this happens: Internal Health led indicator: RED External Health led indicator: Green No led next to any component is red or amber No POST message neither on the video output nor on IML logs (verified both at the time issue occures and after cold reboot that boots the system successfully). Any thoughts please share. I hope we can knock this issue down together with your help!

• Nginx Restart Issues

They exist on the server but when loading the resources directly in Chrome they say "Oops this page can't be found." I set a special group and user to run my apache files using suexec for my domain files. I think the nginx are owned by root however which I'm assuming is the problem but which nginx file ownerships would I change?

• MySQL port 3306 became filtered when configured with Keepalived on Ubuntu server 12.04 lts

  I'm configuring two load balancer (lb01 & lb02) with keepalived for my two mysql server (db01 & db02) with standard port 3306. There is virtual ip address (192.168.205.10) to access it also act as failover, but somehow the web server in the front can't access this mysql server using vip. Here is my config: Keepalived: Only the mysql part that i added here. LB01: virtual_server 192.168.205.10 3306 { delay_loop 6 lb_algo rr lb_kind DR protocol TCP real_server 192.168.205.4 3306 { weight 10 TCP_CHECK { connect_port 3306 connect_timeout 2 } } } LB02: virtual_server 192.168.205.10 3306 { delay_loop 6 lb_algo rr lb_kind DR protocol TCP real_server 192.168.205.6 3306 { weight 10 TCP_CHECK { connect_port 3306 connect_timeout 2 } } } I already comment out the "bind-address=127.0.0.1" part in both server my.cnf. Also, remove all the firewall prog from my ubuntu server (ufw or iptables). Any help? thanks.

This is the requirement for the request: Look for Incoming Mail addressed to #CRITICAL (mutlipurpose, internal group containing a list of engineers) For mail matching Point 1, append "For Immediate Action: " to the front of the Subject Some restrictions I have: Only the Domino server is under my charge, not to touch on network-side or other servers No 3rd party software to be installed I have gone through the configurations in the Domino server and the closest thing I have to filtering Email is the Router/SMTP Restrictions... Rules. But this is not able to fulfill Point 2 in any way. Is this even possible using just Domino server settings, or through agents?

  I want to access and play media files on machine S (Windows XP) from machine C (Windows XP). Using Windows File Sharing ("share this folder" stuff), if it works, I would share the folder containing media files on machine S, and I would be able to play media files, sitting in front of C, using any media player I want. Windows somehow ensures that the remote files behave like local files. But Windows file sharing won't work for me, is there any alternative? If two machines were both Linux, I would install an SSH server on S and use Nautilus from C to access and play media files. The reason why I can't use Windows file sharing is, my campus use two different subnets, I have S and C on different subnets and it seems that the firewall governing the whole network in campus doesn't allow file sharing between different subnets. I tried changing Windows Firewall settings on S to allow C in, it still wouldn't work, so it must be the other firewall.

  i got an email from google a couple of hours ago (around 12AM EST today) that Google's TiSP service is now available in my area. this seems like a great deal compared to my cUrrent 16Mbps cable coNction at work, however i'm a lIttle nervous about the fact that linux support is "Coming soon". i was wOndering if anyone had successfully installed this system and gotten it woRking with their linux infrastructure? I'm assuming that there shouldn't be any issues siNce we have an ASA in front of our internet. TiSP Shouldn't care what is behind that. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

• sox mix nested scripts on amazon ec2 rhel linux

  I'm trying to use "sox" to mix some audio files. The command works great on my Mac terminal sox -m audio.wav "| sox upload.wav -p trim 2 1 pad 6" final.wav This mixes (not concatenate) audio.wav and a section of upload.wav from the 2nd second to the 3rd second and adds 6 seconds of padding in the front, and outputs to final.wav Now the problem is, the SAME EXACT command does NOT work my Amazon EC2 RHEL box. (sox is installed correctly). I get the following error sox soxio: Can't open input file `| sox upload.wav -p trim 2 2 pad 6': No such file or directory For some reason RedHat doesn't like the double quotes. Even though it is documented to be used this way. Thanks for your help!

• How to remove the smell of cigarette from the computer?

  So I'm a smoker, and of course I smoke in front of the computer when I'm at home. On last Friday I moved out from my mothers house to my own, and since the computers were always turned on and the room was a room that everybody could smoke, the smell didn't bother me. At my new home, I turned them on, about 15 minutes ago, and I'm dying because of the smell of cigarette ( this may be kind of stupid from a smoker, but I hope some of you understand ). This solution has to be relatively quick, because I can't stay without the desktop and the server for one week, for example. Tomorrow, I'm going to open them both, and remove all dust there is inside, this should clear some of the smell, but probably won't remove it completely. Does anyone know a technique to get rid of the smell?
