• SQL SERVER – Auto Recovery File Settings in SSMS – SQL in Sixty Seconds #034 – Video

  Every developer once in a while facing an unfortunate situation where they have not yet saved the work and their SQL Server Management Studio crashes. Well, you can minimize the loss by optimizing auto recovery settings. In this video we can see how to set the auto recovery settings. Go to SSMS >> Tools >> Options >> Environment >> AutoRecover There are two different settings: 1) Save AutoRecover Information Every Minutes This option will save the SQL Query file at certain interval. Set this option to minimum value possible to avoid loss. If you have set this value to 5, in the worst possible case, you can loose last 5 minutes of the work. 2) Keep AutoRecover Information for Days This option will preserve the AutoRecovery information for specified days. Though, I suggest in case of accident open SQL Server Management Studio right away and recover your file. Do not procrastinate this important task for future dates. • What is ODBC?

  According to Microsoft, ODBC is a specification for a database API.  This API is database and operating system agnostic due to the fact that the primary goal of the ODBC API is to be language-independent. Additionally, the open functions of the API are created by the manufactures of DBMS-specific drivers. Developers can use these exposed functions from within their own custom applications so that they can communicate with DBMS through the language-independent drivers. • Software for "High-level" source code (C++) Management

  after a lot of small-medium projects, I have a lot of libraries and test programs here and there. Also, I must admit that some of the "best practices" I learnt are not that "good" IMHO. In particular, documenting your code and making a "high-level" documentation is not useful in practice: High-level documentation are not maintain up to date = I prefer to read the source code directly; Browsing generated developer documentation is a pain (IMHO) = I prefer to read the source code directly. For that reason, I am looking for a tool who could help me organize all my source code directories in a more "readable manner". What I need is a tool which: Maintains an UML diagram from C++ source code. I don't need source code generation from UML; USE CASE: I am in this super-tool, I notice a design issue, I change the source code, when I get back, the UML diagram is updated; Maintains easily browsable call graphs; Lists references to methods, variables, etc. For example, when I want to see where/when a method is called; Helps writing pseudo-code from C++; Embeds a nice C++ source code browser; Is Open Source would be great; Works at least on Win7. The focus of this tool should be to browse source code to understand what's going on. For example, when you have a newcomer and you need him to go through source code. Do you know any great tool? Surprisingly, according to the recent 2010 Edelman Trust Barometer, survey respondents in the US valued transparency of business practices as well as company trustworthiness as the two most important factors influencing corporate reputation. What is trust? It's the confidence in a company's ability to do what is right for all its stakeholders -- shareholders, customers, employees, and the broader society at large -- and not just shareholders. Trust is an increasingly important component to maintaining your company's reputation and brand, and Western countries have seen an increase in global trust. Global businesses headquartered in the United States in particular have seen an 18 point boost to 54 percent in global trust. Whether this uptick represents the start of a new trend or a mere blip in the barometer remains to be seen. The Edelman report notes that the increase is "tenuous" as people expect companies to return to "business as usual" after the economy rebounds. This warning underscores the need for companies to continue engaging in open and frequent communications and business practices with its stakeholders across multiple channels and view trust as a "new line of business" to cultivate.

• Safari Mobile Multi-Line <Select> aka GWT Multi-Line ListBox

  Hi guys. Working on a webapp here that must run on the iPad (so, Safari Mobile). I have this code that works fine in just about anything except iPad: <select class="gwt-ListBox" size="12" multiple="multiple"> <option value="Bleeding Eyelashes">Bleeding Eyelashes</option> <option value="Smelly Pupils">Smelly Pupils</option> <option value="Bushy Eyebrows">Bushy Eyebrows</option> <option value="Green Vessels">Green Vessels</option> <option value="Sucky Noses">Sucky Noses</option> </select> What it's supposed to look like is a box with 12 lines ans 5 of them filled up. It works fine in FF, IE, Chrome, Safari Win. But, when I open it on iPad, it's just a single line! Styling it with CSS doesn't work. It just makes the single line bigger if I set the height. Is there a way to make it behave the same way as in normal browsers, or do I nave to make a custom component? Thanks.

  The inaugural Fusion conference was 1 year ago in June 2011 and I was there doing a demo in the keynote, and also presenting a breakout session. If you look at the abstract and title for that session you won't see the term "C++ AMP" in there because the technology wasn't announced and we didn't want to spill the beans ahead of the keynote, where the technology was announced. It was only an announcement, we did not give any bits out, and in fact the first bits came three months later in September 2011 with the Beta following in February 2012. So it really feels great 1 year later, to be back at Fusion presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress from that announcement, to the Visual Studio 2012 Release Candidate that came out last week. If you are attending Fusion (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is PT-3601 on Tuesday 4pm and part 2 is PT-3602 on Wednesday 4pm. • Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

  As the memory become really cheap now, a couple days ago I have updated my laptop memory to 12g. Plus I got my old desktop ,now I decide to build my own SharePoint farm at home. I decide to document the steps to build a simple SharePoint farm. I will use windows server 2008 r2 and VMware. In the first part of this series of building my own SharePoint farm. I will create my domain controller. Here are the steps to install it: Open the command line by going to run and type CMD and then type dcpromo in the command line. The AD Installation wizard will prompt and click next. 2. Click next as shown in the screenshot.   3. Select creates a new domain in a new forest and click next.      4. Type a domain name (e.g. ybbest.com) and click next. 5.In my case , I select Windows Server 2008 R2 forest Functional level and click next 6. Leave the default and click next.(If you have not make a static IP address , you need to do so now)      7.You might get scary prompt like the screenshot below , just ignore the message and click Yes.     8.Leave the default settings and click Next  9.Type a password when you need to restore your Domain        10.Click Next and restart your computer ,this will install your Domain Controller.

  I need to fix Ubuntu Accounts some how but don't really see how it could be done. The problem is: files /etc/passwd and /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts where changed. /etc/passwd After John:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash Befoure serg:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash /etc/hosts After 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 John-The-Rippe Befoure 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 serg-Protege /etc/hostname After John-The-Ripper Befoure serg-PORTEGE-Z835 I was trying to simply changed this files but can not do this because permission denied. When I'm trying to login as a root I got this message: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ sudo -s [sudo] password for John: John is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported The file sudoers is empty: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ vi /etc/sudoers When I type users in cp: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ users John John When I type id, I got this: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ id uid=1000(John) gid=1000(serg) groups=1000(serg) This doesn't work eather: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ usermod -l John serg usermod: user 'serg' does not exist John@John-The-Ripper:~$ adduser serg adduser: Only root may add a user or group to the system. ater. Then I tried to go to the GRUB menu and from there log in as a root. I did this, but however When I tryed to create user serg, It gave me an error that group already exist. When I tried to change /etc/passwd it said 'permission denied' And this doens't do the trick: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ visudo visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied Also The last thing I tried to do is to create a bootable USB and reinstall ubuntu, however I can not open USB-Creator because it asked me a root passwd. But it doesn't work. HELP ME PLEASE =)))

  My computer previously ran Ubuntu 10.4. After upgrading to 13.4, my Epson scanner no longer can be found by the system. Following documentation, I find the following: $ sane-find-scanner # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. could not open USB device 0x046d/0x082b at 001:007: Access denied (insufficient permissions) ... # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details. ... • Windows CE: SDK Doesn’t Show up in Visual Studio 2008

  A customer recently contacted me because after installing an SDK it didn’t show up in Visual Studio 2008.  So being a good vendor I installed VS2008 and then installed the SDK – no problem the SDK showed up and I could create projects based on it. I let the customer know that the SDK definitely works with VS2008. The customer got back to me and asked what OS I was using. Hmm, how could that play into this? I told him that I use Windows XP, and it turned out that he is way more modern than I am and is using both Windows Vista and 7. The customer opened a support case with Microsoft. The answer turns out to be that the SDK install requires the user to be logged on as an administrator when installing on Windows Vista and 7 for the SDK to show up in Visual Studio 2008. This problem does not seem to exist for Visual Studio 2005 on those operating systems. The actual instructions from Microsoft Support are: 1)      Make sure Visual Studio 2008 is not running. I also shut down the device emulator manager but you may not be using that. 2)      Open a “Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt” as Administrator. On Windows 7 just right click the short cut and pick the “Run as administrator” option. 3)      Enter the following command: msiexec /log SDKInstallLog.txt /package <the path to your .msi file> 4)      When asked if you wish to do a custom or complete install pick custom 5)      Instruct the installer to omit the installation of the documentation. This was something I found about CE 6 SDK installation issue and may have no bearing upon your problem but I did it anyway. 6)      Install   Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• Performing a silent install of JDeveloper

  Installing JDeveloper Now that you have downloaded the latest version of JDeveloper from: the Oracle technology network, you are almost ready to install it. The problem is that the GUI installer is not as accessible as it could be. However, there is an alternative called a silent install. To perform a silent install, follow these steps: Download the silent.xml file into the same folder as the JDeveloper installer. You can customize the silent.xml file by setting the folder where JDeveloper will be installed, and by setting the location where you have a 1.6 jdk installed with the accessbridge already configured. The defaults are: JDeveloper wil lbe installed at c:\jdev a jdk is installed at c:\jdk\1.6.0_25 (see instructions in the top of the silent.xml file). Open a command window and navigate to the folder where the JDeveloper installer and silent.xml files are located. Run the following command: jdevstudio11120install.exe -mode=silent -silent_xml=silent.xml -log=install.log Note: this assumes that you are installing JDeveloper 11.1.2.0.0. Change the above command to match the installer package you have. This command will start by extracting the archive then the oracle installer will launch, but you just have to wait until the command prompt returns and voila it will be installed. To run JDeveloper: Now you can use windows explorer to navigate to the %JDEV_HOME% as specified in the silent.xml file (c:\jdev unless you changed it)and drill down to: jdeveloper\jdev\bin and now you have a couple of choices. If you have a 32-bit jdk configured with the accessbridge, then run jdevw.exe, however, if you have a 64-bit jdk copnfigured with the accessbridge, you should run jdev64w.exe. Such a leaderboard would have the following requirements/features; The ability to search through demographics like region, country, platform, game mode, recentness ("best scores this month") and difficulty. (e.g. to make it possible for someone to say "I'm the best player in Italy!" or "I'm the best Linux player in South America!") Our game will not have online multiplayer, so no need to worry about that. We don't expect the game to be a million-dollar hit. We want the scores to be accessible both from in-game and the website. We would like some semblance of security to make sure no one plugs fake scores into the system. This is our present situation; Neither I nor my friend have any network programming background. All I really know is that sockets are low-level, HTTP is high-level. I happen to know that the Google App Engine might be useful for something like this, and I'm really thinking about going with that. We're not sure how we would store all the high score data. Our game will be free and open source (though we might keep the components that submit the high scores closed-source). Aside from all of this, we don't really have any idea where to begin. Any thoughts?

Show Notes Feature Interview James Gosling received a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Canada in 1977. He received a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983. The title of his thesis was "The Algebraic Manipulation of Constraints". He spent many years as a VP & Fellow at Sun Microsystems. He has built satellite data acquisition systems, a multiprocessor version of Unix, several compilers, mail systems and window managers. He has also built a WYSIWYG text editor, a constraint based drawing editor and a text editor called `Emacs' for Unix systems. At Sun his early activity was as lead engineer of the NeWS window system. He did the original design of the Java programming language and implemented its original compiler and virtual machine. He has been a contributor to the Real-Time Specification for Java, and a researcher at Sun labs where his primary interest was software development tools.     He then was the Chief Technology Officer of Sun's Developer Products Group and the CTO of Sun's Client Software Group. He briefly worked for Oracle after the acquisition of Sun. After a year off, he spent some time at Google and is now the chief software architect at Liquid Robotics where he spends his time writing software for the Waveglider, an autonomous ocean-going robot.
