  Happy Friday, everyone! Our tip this week is from an excellent white paper written by our own Greg King titled Oracle VM 3: Building a Demo Environment using Oracle VM VirtualBox. In it, Greg gives you everything you need to know to set up Oracle VM Server inside of Oracle VM VirtualBox for testing and demoing. The section we're highlighting below is on how to configure the network interfaces of your virtual machines: VirtualBox comes with a few different types of network interfaces that can be used to allow communication between the VM guests and the host operating system, including network interfaces that will allow the VM guests to communicate with local and wide area networks accessed from your laptop or personal computer. However, for the purpose of the demonstration environment we will limit the network communication to include access just between your desktop and the virtual machines being managed by VirtualBox. The install process for Oracle VM VirtualBox creates a single host-only network device on your laptop or personal computer. Using the host-only network device will allow you to open a browser on your desktop to access the Oracle VM Manager running within the VirtualBox VM guest. The device will only allow network traffic between the VM guests and your host operating system, but nothing outside the confines of your laptop or personal computer. We will need to add a second host-only network since the Oracle VM Server appliance has both eth0 and eth1 configured. You can choose to use eth1 on the Oracle VM Servers or not use them – the choice is yours. But, at least the host side network device will exist if you decide to use it. • Receiving an MVP Award and Credibility

  The post titled, The Problem with MVPs, by Steve Barbour was interesting because it makes you think about the thousands of MVPs around the world and what their value really is. Having been the recipient of multiple MVP awards, it’s an opportunity to reflect and judge my own performance. This is not a dangerous thing to do, but quite the opposite. If a person believes in self improvement, then critical analysis is an important part of that process. A lot of MVPs will tell you that they would be doing the same thing, regardless of whether they were an MVP or not; helping others in the community, which is also where I prefer to hang my hat. I’ve never defined myself as an expert and never will; this determination is left to others. In fact, let me just come out and say it, “I don’t know everything”. Shocked? Sometimes the gap between expectations and reality extends beyond a reasonable measure. Being labeled as a technical expert feels good for one's self esteem and is certainly a useful motivational technique. A problem can emerge though when an individual believes, too much, in what they are told. The problem is not with a pat on the back, but with a person does with the positive reinforcement. Is narcissism too strong a word? How often have you been in a public forum reading a demeaning response to a question that only serves in attempt to raise the stature of the person providing the response? Such behavior compromises one’s credibility, raises questions about validity of the MVP award, and is limited in community value. I’m currently under consideration for another MVP award on April 1st. If it happens, it will be good. Otherwise, I’ll keep writing articles, coding open source software, and whatever else I enjoy doing; with the best reward being that people find value in what I do. • Script Task/Component and Template Information

  The Script Task and Script component are often used by people developing SSIS packages because they are easy to use and now because SSIS could be perceived to be more developer friendly they are very powerful. That being said we should no be using them everywhere.  There are generally Tasks/Components already provided that will do the job it may be that we have to rethink the way we want to draw our package. I had cause last week to break out the script component in SQL Server 2008 SP1 and found that it was broken.  I don’t know when it broke as I do not use them all that often.  My error was as below.     Something must have overwritten this template information.  I looked in Event Viewer and tried the things it suggested but the templates still did not work.  Here is how I got them eventually to work for me (Your Mileage may vary) Open up a Command Prompt window using an administrator level account and “as an administrator” vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask /setup vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent /setup   This worked for me.  Hope it helps.

  We’re expanding! I’m thrilled to announce that Microsoft Gold Partner LobsterPot Solutions has started another branch appointing the amazing Ted Krueger (5-time SQL MVP awardee) as the US lead. Ted is well-known in the SQL Server world, having written books on indexing, consulting and on being a DBA (not to mention contributing chapters to both MVP Deep Dives books). He is an expert on replication and high availability, and strong in the Business Intelligence space – vast experience which is both broad and deep. Ted is based in the south east corner of Wisconsin, just north of Chicago. He has been a consultant for eons and has helped many clients with their projects and problems, taking the role as both technical lead and consulting lead. He is also tireless in supporting and developing the SQL Server community, presenting at conferences across America, and helping people through his blog, Twitter and more. • What groupware/project-management apps (preferably self-hosted webapp) do you recommend for a small dev shop?

  I run a small Drupal consulting shop and we've been trying different groupware solutions for what seems like ages, yet nothing we've found seems to be a good fit. We don't need CRM-overkill such as SugarCRM offers -- it's just too much for our small size. We do need git integration (at a minimum, an easy way to associate commits with issues) Time tracking on configurable or 15m increments per-project issue tracking billing (incl. recurring billing for support contracts, etc) some sort of per-project notes/wiki for things like login credentials, client contact info, etc. Contact logging (Client foo called at 2:20pm and asked to add bar to the spec, signed addendum with pricing due to client NLT CoB today, to be returned by CoB tomorrow) Open source solutions are greatly preferred to closed ones Most of all, it should be very efficient to use. Several solutions just fell out of use here because they required too many clicks for simple, frequent tasks like logging time spent on an issue or noting a call from a client. It shouldn't take 20 minutes to make a note. Edit: I almost forgot to mention: we're a mixed Linux/Mac shop with no Windows users.

• Advice for someone moving from Windows / Coldfusion / Java to Linux / Ruby / Rails

  Hi all I am thinking of undertaking a serious career move. Currently I work day to day with ColdFusion 9+, and some Java in a Windows environment. My background is Java/JSP etc prior to ColdFusion. I'm considering a move towards Ruby / Rails on Linux as I think it would be a real challenge, keep things fresh and would stand me in good stead for the next few years. There are also more jobs in this area. I would consider myself an experienced web professional. I do TDD and I understand good OO design concepts. I have worked for the past few years on a busy transactional gaming website with all the security and performance challenges that entails. I have also contributed to an open source ColdFusion project recently and I am a active member of the CF community on StackOverflow . In order to maintain my current remuneration (!) etc. I would like to get up to speed on Ruby / Rails and Linux before I go job hunting. The idea is that I can demonstrate enough proficiency in these new skills and combined with my other language / programming / architectural and performance experience I have I'll be a good candidate. I am building a personal website in Rails 3.0 on Ubuntu which I hope will expose me to lots of Rails/Ruby and I am reading a few books. What else can I do? Has anyone made this type of move, and if so would they have any tips apart from what I've mentioned? Is there any areas around Rails/Ruby/Linux that I have to get up to speed with? Any and all tips are appreciated.

• After upgrading to 12.04 the scanner from Brother Printer MFC-290C does not work

  I upgraded Ubuntu to 12.04 from 11.10. The printer works, but the scanner doesn't now. In 11.10 I had to install a special driver from Brother. The printer's model is Brother MFC-290C. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite. How can I get the scanner working? Update: I have a 64-bit installation on the Toshiba Satellite. Thank you for your instructions, Chad--24216. I followed each step: 1 through 5. I also updated the Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool. • Deployable dependencies in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta

  One new feature that comes with Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta is support for deployment references. Deployment reference means that you can include all necessary DLL-s to deployment package so your application has all assemblies it needs to run with it in deployment package. In this posting I will show you how to use deployment dependencies. When I open my ASP.NET web application I have new option for references when I right-click on my web project: Add Deployable Dependencies… If you select it you will see dialog where you can select dependencies you want to add to your project package. When packages you need are selected click OK. Visual Studio adds new folder to your project called _bin_DeployableAssemblies. Screenshot on right shows the list of assemblies added for ASP.NET Pages and Razor. All DLL-s required to run ASP.NET MVC 3 with Razor view engine are here. I am not sure if NuGet.Core.dll is required in production but if it is added then let it be there. Deploy to Azure I tried to deploy my ASP.NET MVC project that uses Razor to Windows Azure after adding deployable references to my project. Deployment went fine and web role instance started without any problems. The only DLL reference I made as local was the one for System.Web.Mvc. All Razor stuff came with deployable dependencies. Conclusion Visual Studio support for deployable dependencies is great because this way component providers can build definitions for their components so also assemblies that are loaded dynamically at runtime will be in deployment package.

• resolv.conf doesn't get set on reboot when networking is configured for static ip

  I'm experiencing, what appears to be a hostname resolution issue in ubuntu 12.04 server edition when configuring my computer to use a static ip. In /etc/network/interfaces: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.28 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 Running $ sudo apt-get upgrade, results in a 'Failed to fetch...': . . . W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en_US Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues?   For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the formalism "When Given Then". This formalism is used in all tools dedicated to BDD. • How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

  I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).

  I work as a consultant in a medium-sized firm. We need to keep track of time spent on individual tasks and which customers to bill to. Our current system for doing this is an old in-house system, that needs to be retired for various reasons. Most developers don't like registering time, so I am looking for the best tool for this job, that minimizes the time needed to register time. Must have features: Must be simple and easy to use. Must have reporting feature to use for billing. Must have an API, so we can integrate in-house tools. Registering time should be based on hours worked (ie. today, worked on Customer A, Task B from 8 AM to 12 AM). TFS integration is a plus, but not needed (ie. register time on a work item) May be open source or a paid product; doesn't really matter. What would you recommend ?
