• What advantages does TFS 2010 have over Axosoft OnTime?

  I am currently creating a business case for rolling out TFS 2010 as our source control and bug/release management tool. We currently use OnTime for our bug tracking software and subversion for our SCM. I was wondering what advantages TFS 2010 has over OnTime? I have done some thinking so far and would love to hear responses: TFS 2010 allows linking changesets-work items-builds TFS 2010 provides greater customisation of workflow than OnTime TFS 2010 is integrated into the Visual Studio IDE - This requires less apps to be open and less window flicking Thanks in advance.

• ruby / rails / mysql performance degraded on Snow Leopard

  I've burned a bunch of hours on this. I'm not having problems getting things to build, but I am seeing that my test suite runs about 2x slower than when I was on OS X 10.5.x . I've spent a lot of time playing around with different optimization settings (learning to avoid homebrew's llvm-gcc compilation). I've just learned that I needed to tweaks /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist in order to get the kernel to boot in 64 bit mode. However, my rails app is still running a bit slower than before, even after warming up the mysql server. So what performance tweaks might i need to look into? Right now the stock ruby 1.8.7 runs faster than 1.9.1 for some things, and I'd really like to know if there is anything I should be looking for. All my dev software has been compiled for x86_64, mysql with -O2 optimization, using regular gcc (not llvm-gcc).

• Best online course for C#/SQL for a professional engineer

  I know similar questions have been asked, but I've not been able to find information specific to my situation. I'm looking for "continuing education"-type options, specifically a C# and/or SQL course. I'm a software engineering professional with a graduate level computer science degree. So I'm looking for something substantial that will be challenging. I certainly already have me feet wet in both C# and SQL I'm just looking for a more formal training to round out the edges. There is a good chance my company will pay for it if it is reasonably priced so it doesn't have to be free and preferably shouldn't be (a certificate or certification to come out of it would be nice). When I tried Google, all I found were things that sounded like crash courses (like a 3 day course or course for "dummies"), or course that did not seem very credible. Can anyone recommend a course of action for this? Thanks!

  I am helping a startup business to launch and I will be building or finding a shopping cart software for its website. There will only be one product for sale, but anytime someone buys a product, I have to use customer information like their zipcode and which distributor they bought from to calculate commissions that will go to the different distributors. All the incoming money will be sent to one sort of escrow account for a few weeks, and after that few weeks is over, I need to be able to "throw the switch" and cause each of the 20,000 distributors to get their rightful share of that escrow account, depending on the data stored that reflects their sales activity and commissions due. Is this something I can write a script to handle? Better yet, is this something an inexpensive or open source solution can handle, or something that can be setup in something like Paypal? Or is a better approach to somehow create a webpage where each distributor can login to and see their commissions due and initiate the account transfer on their own, but the web app restrict them from transferring more than what they're due? • Reading Local Group Policy / Active Directory Settings

  I'm writing a C# program that will enforce password complexity in accordance with the Windows Group Policy setting "Password must meet complexity requirements". Specifically, if that policy is set to Enabled either on the local machine (if it's not part of a domain) or by the Domain Security Policy (for domain members), then my software needs to enforce a complex password for its own internal security. The issue is that I can't figure out how to read that GPO setting. Google searches have indicated that I can read GPO settings with one of these two APIs: the System.DirectoryServices library in .NET Framework, and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), but I haven't had any success so far. Any insights would be helpful.

• Is there a way to export an XSD schema from a DataContract

  I'm using DataContractSerializer to serialize/deserialize my classes to/from XML. Everything works fine, but at some point I'd like to establish a standard schema for the format of these XML files independent of the actual code. That way if something breaks in the serialization process I can always go back and check what the standard schema should be. Or if I do need to modify the schema the modification is an explicit decision rather then just a later affect of modifying my code. In addition, other people may be writing other software that may not be .NET based that would need to read from these XML files. I'd like to be able to provide them with some kind of documentation of the schema. Is there some relationship between a DataContract and an XSD schema. Is there a way to export the DataContract attributes in classes as an XSD schema?

• SQLCLR using the wrong version of the .NET Framework

  During a recent restart of our development server the SQL Server started using .NET 4.0 for the SQLCLR. This means that nothing using the CLR in SQL works, or at least that's my understanding by reading these sources: http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2009/10/16/sql-server-2008-sqlclr-net-framework-version/ www.sqlskills.com/BLOGS/BOBB/post/On-SQL-Server-and-NET-40.aspx All we get are error messages of this type: Msg 6517, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Failed to create AppDomain "xxx.dbo[ddl].3". Method's type signature is not Interop compatible. Does anyone know how to solve this or how we can force SQL Server CLR to use an earlier version of the Framework?

He shared a compelling story of operating on a soldier who had suffered a head-related trauma in a field hospital.  With minimal supplies available Gupta used a Black and Decker saw to operate on the soldier's head and reduce pressure on his swelling brain. Drawing from this example, Gupta encouraged underwriters to think creatively, be innovative, and consider new tools and sources of information, such as social networking sites, during the underwriting process. So as you are looking at risk take into consideration all resources you have available.    Gupta also stressed the concept of IKIGAI - noting that individuals who believe that their life is worth living are less likely to die than are their counterparts without this belief.  How does one quantify this approach to life or thought process when evaluating risk?  Could this be something to consider as a "category" in the near future? How can this same belief in your own work spur innovation?   The role of technology was a hot topic of discussion throughout the conference.  Sessions delved into the latest in underwriting software to the rise of social media and how it is being increasingly integrated into underwriting process and solutions.  In one session a trio of panelists representing the carrier, producer and vendor communities stressed the importance to underwriters of leveraging new technology and the plethora of online information sources, which all could be used to accurately, honestly and consistently evaluate the risk throughout the underwriting process.   Another focused on the explosion of social media noting:  1.    Social media is growing exponentially - About eight percent of Americans used social media five years ago. Today about 46 percent of Americans do so, with 85 percent of financial services professionals using social media in their work.  2.    It will impact your business - Underwriters reconfirmed over and over that they are increasingly using "free" tools that are available in cyberspace in lieu of more costly solutions, such as inspection reports conducted by individuals in the field.  3.    Information is instantly available on the Web, anytime, anywhere - LinkedIn was mentioned as a way to connect to peers in the underwriting community and producers alike.  Many carriers and agents also are using Facebook to promote their company to customers - and as a point-of-entry to allow them to perform some functionality - such as accessing product marketing information versus directing users to go to the carrier's own proprietary website.  Other carriers have released their tight brand marketing to allow their producers to drive more business to their personal Facebook site where they offer innovative tools such as Application Capture or asking medical information in a more relaxed fashion.     Other key topics at the conference included the economy, ongoing industry consolidation, real-estate valuations as an asset and input into the underwriting process, and producer trends.  All stressed a "back to basics" approach for low cost, term products.   Finally, Connie Merritt, RN, PHN, entertained the large group of atttendees with audience-engaging insight on how to "Tame the Lions in Your Life - Dealing with Complainers, Bullies, Grump and Curmudgeon." Merritt noted "we are too busy for our own good." She shared how her overachieving personality had impacted her life.  Audience members then were asked to pick red, yellow, blue, or green shapes, without knowing that each one represented a specific personality trait.  For example, those who picked blue were the peacemakers. • “Could not create the file”, “Access is denied” and “Unrecoverable build error” in building setup project in VS 2008

  When building a setup project I get a message: Error with setup build: Error 27 Could not create the file 'C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp\VSI1E1A.tmp' 'Access is denied.' I have tried the following (from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329214/EN-US) regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSI Tools\mergemod.dll" The DLL registers but this does not fix my problem. Also, I tried a Clean build, deleting the temp folder, ran VS2008 as administratror, restart my PC but it occurs every time. I have no anti-virus software running and running on Windows 7 64-bit. This operation worked fine until recently. I have read many other users see this but found no solution. The only half solution I found was to edit setup properties and switch to Package files as Loose uncompressed files. This works but is not ideal as I need a full installer.

  Hello, My program sets "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" value "Hidden". Hovewer I'm not able to refresh the explorer to take into account this change. I've tried: 1) SHChangeNotify(SHCNE_ASSOCCHANGED, SHCNF_IDLIST, IntPtr.Zero, IntPtr.Zero); 2) SHELLSTATE state = new SHELLSTATE(); state.fShowAllObjects = (uint)1; SHGetSetSettings(ref state, SSF.SSF_SHOWALLOBJECTS, true); 3) SendMessageTimeout(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_SETTINGCHANGE, SPI_SETNONCLIENTMETRICS, 0, SMTO_ABORTIFHUNG, 5000, ref dwResult); 4) SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_COMMAND, 28931 /* Refresh */, 0); Nothing works. So what should I do? If I refresh Explorer myself with F5, then it works. Hovewer I would like some elegant solution, so it would refresh the display everywhere, even in OpenFile/SaveFile dialogs, which are currently open. I'm using C# .NET, Win7. Thank you.

• MagicLibrary.dll 32bit convert for 64bit

  Hi Guys, I recently received an email about a guy who like to make my software compatible with 64Bit Windows 7 OS. I have 1 single problem though .. I have followed a steps regarding on compiling VS Solution/Project for 64bit. But when I start to to compile the solution for 64bit, this "Crownwood.Magic.Forms" (MagicLibrary.dll) doesn't work anymore. This is the compilation error message "Error 6 The type or namespace name 'Crownwood' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)" Please don't tell me I did not referenced the MagicLibrary.dll It's a bit of confusing because the MagicLibrary.dll is already in my reference list. I also remove and add it back. There was this CorFlags.exe but am not sure how to convert it to 64bit. "CorFlags MagicLibrary.dll /32BIT- /Force" did not work.. :( Please help. Thanks in advance - Jayson

• SQL Server 2008 Express doesn't see my Visual Studio 2008 Team System's SP1

  Hi, I want to install SQL Server 2008 express. I have already Visual Studio 2008 Team System with SP1. VS in help about shows me: MVS version: 9.0.30729.1 SP .NET Framework version: 3.5 SP1 but installator of SQL Server shows me that Visual Studio doesn't have SP1. Anyway I tricked up him by change in win registry HKLM Software Microsoft DevDiv VS Servicing 9.0 IDE 1033 value from RTM on SP1 and instalation runs. But during instalation error was occured about SP1 again. SQL Server was installed without SQL Managment. When I try install it I have allways the same error about SP1. I was install SP1 couple times with success but it does nothing. I was instal SQL Server SP1 also but it does nothing. Reinstall of VS 2008 and SP1 does nothing. What can I do?   We use FormAuthentication to manage logins and I have a case where a customer complains where he can login from one computer but to from another. I can see in my logs that his authentican is successfull but he gets bumped back to the login page. I can reproduce the symptons by disabling cookies so I asked the customer to test if cookies are enabled on http://www.tempesttech.com/cookies/cookietest1.asp, but this came out positive.   Hi, Today I had a discussion with a friend of mine and we debated for a couple of hours about "compiler optimization". I defended the point that sometimes, a compiler optimization might introduce bugs or at least, undesired behavior. My friend totally disagreed, saying that "compiler are built by smart people and do smart things" and thus, can never go wrong. He didn't convinced my at all, but I have to admit I lack of real-life examples to strengthen my point. Who is right here ? If I am, do you have any real-life example where a compiler optimization produced a bug in the resulting software ? If I'm mistaking, should I stop programming and learn fishing instead ?   Hi all, I'm looking to revamp our mobile site with something simple for phones below the ambiguous smart phone category and something a little more interesting for the phones above this category. I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices.   My university is hosting a Programming Competition, and have decided to support Turbo C (the 16-bit DOS version) as a valid programming environment. I have just read that PC^2, the software that is going to be used to auto-judge the competition, does not support 16-bit programs. So, is there any alternative to Turbo C that I can use. I need the same header files, and the compiler would need to support all the outdated C standards that Turbo C supports. But the output needs to be 32-bit. Is there any compiler that can satisfy these conditions?

In the above case, if the log files are deleted by the user or any administrator even, the bandwidth calculation will not be possible. Q1: *What is the standard way to measure the Bandwidth for various Hosting accounts (of websites) on a single server?* Q2: *If Log parser mechanism (as described above) is used, then how to take care of the security issue? • Implement 3270 protocol in Java

  I've got a big problem with IBM HACL for accessing a server which speaks 3270 protocol. The library keeps crashing, and our JNI wrapper is actually a bug-fixing layer for the poorly-implemented and poorly-documented library (and I suspect we have introduced new bugs with it too). Moreover, in our company, everybody knows Java, and could maintain the software if we didn't have the JNI-Layer and the IBM class library. We have to use the C++ class library, because the IBM Java library is unusable: we get every non-printable character translated, and we lose all control characters along the way. Now the question is: can we ditch this library and implement our solution in Java completely (we'd like to avoid using another library from another vendor)? Is the protocol well documented? Is the implementation of 3270-over-ssl really so complex? Thanks.

  I'm currently involved in a research project that requires me to access a Windows Mobile Camera and sound recorder with J2ME to, well take pictures and record sound... the phone has to be a windows mobile for some reason that has nothing to do with me and the software has to be written in Java, also not my decision. • Visual Studio .NET 2003 - Ignore Specific Library for libcmt vs libcmtd

  Hi, I have a template VS .NET 2003 project, which colleagues copy and customise when developing their software. It appears the template was altered a while back to set the IgnoreSpecificLibrary property to have libcmt.lib for both release and debug builds (i.e. for both release and debug, the build should ignore libcmt.lib in the linker). Some projects based on this have since been built, with the release build pulling in libcmtd.lib (evident by looking through the project .map file) which appears to have caused some runtime issues (i.e. a dialog window being flashed up as though a breakpoint had been set). Does setting IgnoreSpecificLibrary to exclude libcmt.lib automatically make the project link against libcmtd.lib? What is weird is that building the template (with the incorrect setting) links against libcmt.lib whereas some of the customised projects (though not all) link against libcmtd.lib. Any ideas?

  Just installed TFS 2008. Created a project with portal site. When I create a bug in TFS from Visual Studio I'd like to see that bug in the web portal. And the other way around. When I add a task in the web portal I'd like to see that in Visual Studio. It's as if the web portal is not connected to TFS. I'm using the MSF for Agile Software Development template. I just saw Team System Web Access. That's what I want in addition to the other pages Sharepoint portal provides. For example the Wiki page and calendar view. So one place to see all tasks lists and assign task and see other project related pages. Maybe be able to has the tasks due dates come up on the calendar. Many thanks
