• The Data Scientist

  A new term - well, perhaps not that new - has come up and I’m actually very excited about it. The term is Data Scientist, and since it’s new, it’s fairly undefined. I’ll explain what I think it means, and why I’m excited about it. In general, I’ve found the term deals at its most basic with analyzing data. Of course, we all do that, and the term itself in that definition is redundant. There is no science that I know of that does not work with analyzing lots of data. But the term seems to refer to more than the common practices of looking at data visually, putting it in a spreadsheet or report, or even using simple coding to examine data sets. The term Data Scientist (as far as I can make out this early in it’s use) is someone who has a strong understanding of data sources, relevance (statistical and otherwise) and processing methods as well as front-end displays of large sets of complicated data. Some - but not all - Business Intelligence professionals have these skills. In other cases, senior developers, database architects or others fill these needs, but in my experience, many lack the strong mathematical skills needed to make these choices properly. I’ve divided the knowledge base for someone that would wear this title into three large segments. It remains to be seen if a given Data Scientist would be responsible for knowing all these areas or would specialize. There are pretty high requirements on the math side, specifically in graduate-degree level statistics, but in my experience a company will only have a few of these folks, so they are expected to know quite a bit in each of these areas. Persistence The first area is finding, cleaning and storing the data. In some cases, no cleaning is done prior to storage - it’s just identified and the cleansing is done in a later step. This area is where the professional would be able to tell if a particular data set should be stored in a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), across a set of key/value pair storage (NoSQL) or in a file system like HDFS (part of the Hadoop landscape) or other methods. Or do you examine the stream of data without storing it in another system at all? This is an important decision - it’s a foundation choice that deals not only with a lot of expense of purchasing systems or even using Cloud Computing (PaaS, SaaS or IaaS) to source it, but also the skillsets and other resources needed to care and feed the system for a long time. The Data Scientist sets something into motion that will probably outlast his or her career at a company or organization. Often these choices are made by senior developers, database administrators or architects in a company. But sometimes each of these has a certain bias towards making a decision one way or another. The Data Scientist would examine these choices in light of the data itself, starting perhaps even before the business requirements are created. The business may not even be aware of all the strategic and tactical data sources that they have access to. Processing Once the decision is made to store the data, the next set of decisions are based around how to process the data. An RDBMS scales well to a certain level, and provides a high degree of ACID compliance as well as offering a well-known set-based language to work with this data. In other cases, scale should be spread among multiple nodes (as in the case of Hadoop landscapes or NoSQL offerings) or even across a Cloud provider like Windows Azure Table Storage. In fact, in many cases - most of the ones I’m dealing with lately - the data should be split among multiple types of processing environments. This is a newer idea. Many data professionals simply pick a methodology (RDBMS with Star Schemas, NoSQL, etc.) and put all data there, regardless of its shape, processing needs and so on. A Data Scientist is familiar not only with the various processing methods, but how they work, so that they can choose the right one for a given need. This is a huge time commitment, hence the need for a dedicated title like this one. Presentation This is where the need for a Data Scientist is most often already being filled, sometimes with more or less success. The latest Business Intelligence systems are quite good at allowing you to create amazing graphics - but it’s the data behind the graphics that are the most important component of truly effective displays. This is where the mathematics requirement of the Data Scientist title is the most unforgiving. In fact, someone without a good foundation in statistics is not a good candidate for creating reports. Even a basic level of statistics can be dangerous. Anyone who works in analyzing data will tell you that there are multiple errors possible when data just seems right - and basic statistics bears out that you’re on the right track - that are only solvable when you understanding why the statistical formula works the way it does. And there are lots of ways of presenting data. Sometimes all you need is a “yes” or “no” answer that can only come after heavy analysis work. In that case, a simple e-mail might be all the reporting you need. In others, complex relationships and multiple components require a deep understanding of the various graphical methods of presenting data. Knowing which kind of chart, color, graphic or shape conveys a particular datum best is essential knowledge for the Data Scientist. Why I’m excited I love this area of study. I like math, stats, and computing technologies, but it goes beyond that. I love what data can do - how it can help an organization. I’ve been fortunate enough in my professional career these past two decades to work with lots of folks who perform this role at companies from aerospace to medical firms, from manufacturing to retail. Interestingly, the size of the company really isn’t germane here. I worked with one very small bio-tech (cryogenics) company that worked deeply with analysis of complex interrelated data. So  watch this space. No, I’m not leaving Azure or distributed computing or Microsoft. In fact, I think I’m perfectly situated to investigate this role further. We have a huge set of tools, from RDBMS to Hadoop to allow me to explore. And I’m happy to share what I learn along the way.

• Can any Palm Pre be used for development?

  We're about to start developing software for the Palm, using WebOS. Though an emulator is available for testing, I always feel more confident seeing it run on a physical device as well. I can't find anywhere on Palm's website that tells me whether I can just buy an off-the-shelf Palm Pre and run my app on it, or if I have to buy one with a particular type of contract/ have it unlocked in some way/ whatever. Does anyone know? Have you done this? (Sorry this is barely programming-related, but I couldn't think where else to ask. I'm sure someone has done this and can give me a quick yay or nay. Thanks.) Oh - I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

• How do I render 3d model into directshow virtual camera output

  I want to provide a virtual webcam via DirectShow that will use the video feed from an existing camera running some tracking software against it to find the users face and then overlay a 3d model oriented just that it appears to move the users face. I am using a third party api to do the face tracking and thats working great. I get position and rotation data from that api. My question is whats the best way to render the 3d model and get into the video feed and out to direct show? I am using c++ on windows xp.

• ConnectionKit & iPhone SDK

  I'm still getting my feet wet with the iPhone SDK, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to get the ConnectionKit framework working for an iPhone app. I know it was developed for the desktop OS, so I'm not sure what sort of dependencies it has and whether or not it could be shoehorned into the iPhone OS. In my case, I would like to use its FTP functionality, though having access to this entire framework could prove useful for future projects as well. Any ideas or experience trying this? • Which language/framework to use for this desktop internet application?

  I'd like to experiment with a new language/framework to work on some desktop tools for myself, which will do tasks related to internet services. I.e. i'd like to to monitor some of my servers for http or icmp response, also parse xml responses. I have experience with php, lua, mysql, and basic knowledge of java and c++. I'm also interested in exploring multithreading for this, background tasks and a responsive gui do need that as i have read. Being a private project, i certainly want to learn something new, but i don't have that much free time. The question for you would be which language and what framework to choose that could help me with this tasks: lightweight + fast gui (windows only would be ok, platform-independent even better) network/socket support, html module would be appreciated htmlview support xml "parsing" support (xpath or something like the phpish DOMDocument class) threading support Free software would be nice, but paying some bucks won't hurt me if it really helps the case.

  Joel mentions in several of his blog posts that it is very important for a developer/software entrepreneur to have solid understanding of Economics. Yet the Fog Creek MBA book reading list does not include any Economics books. Is there any good material that people can recommend? Obviously, I am not as concerned about mathematical treatise as foundations and basic principles. For example, I was able to find a very good high-level read on Macroeconomics: Concise Guide to Macroeconomics but I am yet to find anything similar on Microeconomics. Any suggestions and reading pointers would be highly appreciated.

  I am in need of a lightweight way to store dictionaries of data into a database. What I need is something that: Creates a database table from a simple type description (int, float, datetime etc) Takes a dictionary object and inserts it into the database (including handling datetime objects!) If possible: Can handle basic references, so the dictionary can reference other tables I would prefer something that doesn't do a lot of magic. I just need an easy way to setup and get data into an SQL database. What would you suggest? There seems to be a lot of ORM software around, but I find it hard to evaluate them.

  Hi all, After several years of following the bad practice handed down from 'architects' at my place of work and thinking that there must be a better way, I've recently been reading up around TDD and DDD and I think the principles and practices would be a great fit for the complexity of the software we write. However, many of the TDD samples I have seen call a method on the domain object and then test properties of the object to ensure the behaviour executed correctly. On the other hand, several respected people in the industry (Greg Young most noticeably so) advocate the "no-getters" principle on our domain objects. My question therefore is: How does one test the functionality of a domain object if it is forbidden to retrieve its state? I believe I am missing something fundamental so please feel free to call me an idiot and enlighten me - any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

• Monodevelop: `Waiting for debugger to connect...`

  I am trying to debug this Mono desktop software in Monodevelop. I imported the SLN file, ran Build all with success, but when I press the Debug button I get this popup that stays waiting forever saying Waiting for debugger to connect...: The output says: User assembly '/home/nico/src/SparkleShare/SparkleShare/bin/SparkleShare.exe' is missing. Debugger will now debug all code, not just user code. Am I doing something wrong? Monodevelop 2.8.6.3 on Ubuntu 2012.04. Nothing special appears on the console with monodevelop -v -v -v. When I press Run instead of Debug, the app crashes immediately saying The application exited with code: 255, but I need Debug to find where the problem is. Note: It is not the same problem as this question, which is about MonoTouch waiting for a phone simulator... the suggestions over there are about the simulator or updating XCode... no simulator nor XCode here.

• Thoughts on moving to Maven in an enterprise environment

  I'm interested in hearing from those who either A) use Maven in an enterprise environment or B) tried to use Maven in an enterprise environment. I work for a large company that is contemplating bringing in Maven into our environment. Currently we use OpenMake to build/merge and home-grown software to deploy code to 100+ servers running various platforms (eg. WAS and JBoss). OpenMake works fine for us however Maven does have some ideal features, most importantly being dependency management, but is it viable in a large environment? Also what headaches have/did you incur, if any, in maintaining a Maven environment. • how to automate upsizing from Access to SQL Server?

  Hi, I need to automate the migration from an Access (2003) to an SQL Server DB (2005 or 2008). The upsizing should be done automatically as part of a build process. I need that because there are 2 versions of the software, a single user rich client and a web version. Access DB is used for single user to minimize setup effort, SQL Server to improve performance and scaling with many simultanious users. Access should be the "leading" DB, meaning devs do changes in Access DB and those are propagated to the SQL server within the build process. Many changes will occur, so doing it manually is not an option. I am new to the Microsoft world, so I dont know appropriate tools for that. What tools can I use and how? Not everything will get a retweet. But like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play. Promoting content is as important as creating it. If you’re going to make an intranet, it has to look great, work great, and employees are going have to want to go there. You can’t order them to like it.

  My partner and I have a webcam site that basically runs the old-school method....Every 0.5 seconds the javascript reloads the image in the browser from the webcam. However we are wanting to upgrade to a streaming media server to get higher quality video, and possibly audio. We aren't tied to any one specific file format or server type, as of right now we are leaning towards slicehost (as scalability is important), and installing darwin streaming server or wowza. This is meant to be a live stream. Does anyone have any suggestions for hosts/server software?

• iPhone Simulator locks up immediately upon Build / Run

  I'm having a problem getting my MacBook set up to build iPhone *apps* in xCode. The iPhone Simulator locks up and shows the "spinning circle" busy icon. I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting the simulator tried all of the different hardware options tried the two debug build choices in xCode. uninstalling the SDK and completely reinstalling I downloaded the SDK today - "xcode_3.2.2_and_iphone_sdk_3.2_final" I'm just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I've run all the software updates. xCode version says 3.2.2 (1650) If it matters, my MacBook is 3-4 years old, 13 inch, dual 2.16 ghz intel cores, 2 gig RAM. I've never had a single problem with it. I would be so grateful if anyone can help me thanks so much,

• Windows Aero areas in own C# Applications

  I'm wondering about that many new applications, I think most built in WPF, has this really cool Windows Aero Glass interfaces. For example Seesmic or the upcoming Firefox 3.7 Searching in the internet most time it looks like you need a hack to realize this. But seriously: I don't think big software development teams use hacks to roll out their huge used products. So my question is: Windows Aero Glass Areas - How to do? Is it only possible with a hack? Maybe it's just one property, i don't know. I'm WinForms developer so I never tested out WPF. But my Google search didn't look like It is easier with WPF.

  I'm thinking of one day moving to Japan and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience working there. I'm curious as to what languages/technology are popular there for web development and software development. I have heard Ruby is/was strong there due to its founder being Japanese. What would you recommend someone focus on if they wanted to work as a developer in Japan? I have heard Microsoft has a strong base in Japan, but my guess is that whatever platform has supported unicode or Shift-JIS the best would be the strongest.

• The best way to organize WPF projects

  Hello everybody, I've started recently to develop a new software in WPF, and I still don't know which is the best way to organize the application, to be more productive with Visual Studio and Expression Blend. I noticed 2 annoying things I'd like to solve: I'm using Code Contracts in my projects, and when I run my project with Expression Blend, it launches the static analysis of the code. How can I stop that? Which configuration of the project does Blend use by default? I've tried to disable Code Contracts in a new configuration. It works in VS as the static analysis is not launched, but it has no effects in Blend. I've thinked about splitting the Windows Application in 2 parts: the first one containing the views of the WPF (app.exe) and the second one being the core of the project, with the logic code (app.core.dll), and I would just open the former project in Blend.   Can anyone, please, explain to me how to transform a phrase like "I want to buy some milk" into MD5? I read Wikipedia article on MD5, but the explanation given there is beyond my comprehension: "MD5 processes a variable-length message into a fixed-length output of 128 bits. The input message is broken up into chunks of 512-bit blocks (sixteen 32-bit little endian integers)" "sixteen 32-bit little endian integers" is already hard for me. I checked the article on little endians and didn't understand a bit. However, the examples of some phrases and their MD5 hashes are very nice: MD5("The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog") = 9e107d9d372bb6826bd81d3542a419d6 MD5("The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.") = e4d909c290d0fb1ca068ffaddf22cbd0 Can anyone, please, explain to me how this MD5 algorithm works on some very simple example? And also, perhaps you know some software or a code that would transform phrases into their MD5. If yes, please, let me know.

• Python web server

  Hi I'd like to get suggestions on the best way to serve python scripts up as web pages. Typically I'd like a way for me and my colleagues to write simple web pages with minimal effort ie we focus on the business logic eg creating simple forms etc. Possibly with some way to manage sessions but this is a nice-to-have. It doesn't have to be WYSIWYG as they are developers but we are busy and don't want to spend long turning an idea into reality. It's for internal use so appearances are not paramount. The software required to enable this should be easy to setup and configure. eg adding new directories and python lib dirs should be easy. My first instinct is apache or tomcat with mod_python. Any comments / suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.
