  I found this week’s Windows Phone 8 event interesting.  Not just because it looks like some fantastic new features in the new OS but because of the wait for release.  If I were a Nokia shareholder (which I am not) I’d be very unhappy with MS announcing that Windows Phone 8 will NOT work with current hardware.  So, there are some very nice Lumia devices that are now end-of-life that have arrived relatively recently at carriers and retailers. I understand that MS needs to demonstrate progress against iOS and Android and that there is some Windows 8 tie-in that they are trying to capitalize (and MS IS still all about Windows).  However, it’s a bit of a kick to partners that have invested in the platform with pretty decent devices (Samsung, HTC and of course Nokia). Personally, I’m still using a Samsung Foucs.  I was seriously considering upgrading to a Lumia 900 (we just got Lync mobile available) but will now wait it out until new devices arrive with Windows 8.  If MS had waited to announce, I would happily have upgraded to the Lumia and when I found out it couldn’t be upgraded then that would be a gamble I took and lost and I’d live with it.  Now, however, I can see the future and know that waiting is the better option for me so that is 1 sale Nokia will miss out on.  Based on some chats I’ve seen on mobile forums I’m certainly far from the only one. I’m sure glad I’m not in charge of marketing at MS.  There are tough decisions to be made there and I’m pretty sure you piss somebody off regardless. Technorati Tags: WP8,Lumia,Nokia,Samsung

• How to rotate a group of objects around a common center?

  I've made a model in 3D Studio Max 9. It consists of a variety of cubes, clyinders etc. In XNA I've imported the model okay and it shows correctly. However, when I apply rotation, each component in the model rotates around it's own centre. I want the model to rotate as a single unit. Translating the object also causes the objects to get moved independently of each other rather than as a single model and each piece becomes spread around the scene. The model is in .X format.

• Is it any loose coupling mechanism in Objective-C + Cocoa like C# delegates or C++Qt signals+slots?

  Hello. For a large programs, the standard way to chalenge a complexity is to divide a program code into small objects. Most of the actual programming languages offer this functionality via classes, so is Objective-C. But after source code is separated into small object, the second challenge is to somehow connect them with each over. Standard approaches, supported by most languages are compositon (one object is a member field of another), inheritance, templates (generics) and callbacks. More cryptic techniques include method-level delagates (C#) and signals+slots (C++Qt). I like the delegates / signals idea, since while connecting two objects i can connect individual methods with each over, without objects knowing anything of each over. For C#, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); object1.SomethingHappened += object2.HandleSomething; In this code, is object1 calls it's SomethingHappened delegate (like a normal method call) the HandleSomething method of object2 will be called. For C++Qt, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); connect( object1, SIGNAL(SomethingHappened()), object2, SLOT(HandleSomething()) ); The result will be exactly the same. This technique has some advantages and disadvantages, but generally i like it more than interfaces since if program code base grows i can change connections and add new ones without creating tons of interfaces. After examination of Objective-C i havn't found any way to use this technique i like :(. It seems that Objective-C supports message passing perfectly well, but it requres for object1 to have a pointer to object2 in order to pass it a message. If some object needs to be connected to lots of other objects, in Objective-C i will be forced to give him pointers to each of the objects it must be connected. So, the question :). Is it any approach in Objective-C programming that will closely resemble delegate / signal+slot types of connection, not a 'give first object an entire pointer to second object so it can pass a message to it'. Method-level connections are a bit more preferable to me than object-level connection ^_^.

• Counting product releases if you work on the backend/online services?

  I am trying to update my resume, and I would like to count the number of "product releases" that I was directly involved in with a company. It would seem to serve as a performance metric. The problem is that I was working on the backend of a very large distributed system, like along the lines of Hadoop or other huge database. We had regular 6-month major releases and other minor releases. My manager kept saying that "shipped" these releases, but "shipping" a product to me sounds like releasing single pieces of software, like Microsoft would ship Office 11 or something. Any ideas on "product releases" for backend service engineers, or any other type of performance metric?

• Proper library for enums

  I'm trying to refactor some code such that the display is separate from the implementation, and I'm not sure where to put the existing enums. My project is currently structured as follows: Utilities RemoteData (Depends on: Utilities) LocalData (Depends on: RemoteData, Utilities) RemoteWeb (Depends on: RemoteData, Utilities) LocalWeb (Depends on: RemoteData, LocalData, Utilities) I'm now trying to add "ViewLibrary (Depends on: Utilities)" to this list, and then adding it as a new dependency to both RemoteWeb and LocalWeb. It will contain a set of interfaces which the other two projects will implement, use to populate the view, and then consume the result. There's an enum which is currently used in all the projects except Utilities. It thus lives in the RemoteData project, because everything else depends on it. But this new ViewLibrary won't depend on either data project. So how will it know about this enum? Some options I see: Create a new project just for shared enum values. Add it to Utilities, even though it is related to data. Define it a second time in ViewLibrary, and require both RemoteWeb and LocalWeb to convert the one type into the other when they access the shared views. Add a dependency on RemoteData to the ViewLibrary, even though it's supposed to be independent of data-source. Are there any better options? Is this structure flawed to begin with?

For me, giving the implementation access to parent's information is some how disconcerting. On the other hand, initializing a new list, just to collect the items is a useless overhead ... What is the better design? How would it change, if DoSomethingWithStuff wouldn't be part of BaseItem but a third class? PS: there might be missing semicolons, or typos; sorry for that! • [Android] Show default selection color for custom listview

  Hello, I have a listview with a custom BaseAdapter. Each row of the listview has a TextView and a CheckBox. The problem is when I click (or touch) any row, the textview foreground becomes gray, instead of the default behavior (background - green, textview foreground - white). • What environmental factors do you believe contribute to productivity?

  From the perspective of a developer what do you consider to be the most important environmental factors or work place perks/policies that contribute to increase productivity? For example, my top four includes the following: No internet restrictions - Because honestly ever few hours I need a 15 min deload, which usually involves checking my gmail account and or browsing a few choice site. Personal office with a door - for obvious reasons Dual monitors - do people really develop software with one monitor still? Flexible hours - This could be interpreted in different ways, but basically I really appreciate that fact that I can roll into work at 7am, 11am or whenever and the time police aren't on my back. It is just understood that I will put in my 8 hours or more if needed and get my job done however that works out.

• Android Thumbnail Loading Problem

  I'm using a thumbnail loader in my project the one mentioned below. The problem is that the it loads all the thumbnails properly except the ones who's size is of about 40K. When our back end is giving that sort of thumbnails are not generated and sometimes this eventually leads to a Crash too. • Collision Detection Problems

  So I'm making a 2D tile based game but I can't quite get the collisions working properly. I've taken the code from the Platformer Sample and implemented it into my game as seen below. One problem I'm having is when I'm on the ground for some strange reason I can't move to the left. Now I'm pretty sure this problem is from the HandleCollisions() method because when I stop running it I can smoothly move around with no problems. Another problem I'm having is when I'm close to a tile the character jitters very strangely. I will try to post a video if necessary.   I recently talked to some NetBeans users who were interested in a demonstration of the features that will be part of NetBeans IDE 7.2. (See the 7.2 New and Noteworthy for the full list.) One of the new features I demonstrated was this one. • LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

  So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.

You can configure it as you wish. For Office 365 (SharePoint Online), the limit is 7GB per user. Number of items (documents and folders): You can sync up to 20,000 items in your SkyDrive (personal library). You can sync up to 5,000 items from other libraries, per library. In other words, you could sync 10 libraries (for example), with each library having up to 5000 items. Third, site limits: No fixed limits. It depends on your computer's resources. • Very simple test view in MonoTouch draws a line using Core Graphics but view content is not shown

  Hi, I give up now on this very simple test I've been trying to run. I want to add a subview to my window which does nothing but draw a line from one corner of the iPhone's screen to the other and then, using touchesMoved() it is supposed to draw a line from the last to the current point. The issues: 1. Already the initial line is not visible. 2. When using Interface Builder, the initial line is visible, but drawRect() is never called, even if I call SetNeedsDisplay(). It can't be that hard...can somebody fix the code below to make it work? • Android , Read in binary data and write it to file

  Hi all , Im trying to read in image file from a server , with the code below . It keeps going into the exception. I know the correct number of bytes are being sent as I print them out when received. Im sending the image file from python like so #open the image file and read it into an object imgfile = open (marked_image, 'rb') obj = imgfile.read() #get the no of bytes in the image and convert it to a string bytes = str(len(obj)) #send the number of bytes self.conn.send( bytes + '\n') if self.conn.sendall(obj) == None: imgfile.flush() imgfile.close() print 'Image Sent' else: print 'Error' Here is the android part , this is where I'm having the problem. As far as I can tell its definitely sending too as the send all method in python sends all or throws an exception in the event of an error and so far it has never thrown an exception. So the client side is messed up . I have to send the file from the server so I cant use the suggestion suggested by Brian .

• Case studies for successful service (project) based software development businesses without constant overtime from its employees [closed]

  I work for an IT company that is primarily services (project) based rather than product based. All software engineers are salaried. The company has set new expectations that everyone should work 48 hours per week instead of 40. Note, this isn't occasional overtime due to crunches. This is the new 40. The reasoning is that this enables the company to provide benefits to its employees such as monetary incentives and training because the company is more profitable. more hours worked = more billable hours = larger profit I understand the need for profitability and the occasional crunch time and have put in the extra hours when it was needed and beneficial to the project. However, I am also very sensitive to work life balance and have raised my concerns about the the new expectation. My employer is open to other methods to increase profitability so I hold hope that we can turn things around before it becomes a horrible place to work. How does a services based company become more profitable without increasing the number of hours expected from it's salaried employees? Are there any case studies showing the pros and cons of consistent overtime? • How to remove geoclue-master?

  Looking in System Monitor I saw a process called geoclue-master. As far as I can tell, this reports my precise location to applications and the internet. This computer is sitting in the same office all the time so I have no need whatsoever for such a thing, and would rather have the memory and processor cycles that this unnecessary service uses up - however small - free for things that I do need and want. I could not find instructions for disabling and removing this service so I renamed the file, but then the calendar disappeared from the notification area. Is there a way to remove this service but leave the calendar? I'm using 11.10.

• Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04 stoped working after menu edditing

  I have recently installed cinnamon on ubuntu 12.04 with success. After installing MS Office with wine my menu got messy so I tried to edit it with alacarte. After having found out that alacarte is not the proper way to edit it, I right clicked on the menu icon to edit. After just a few editing steps it breaks and cinnamon stopped working (no menus, no desktop icons, no applets, no window decoration, nothing). Now, when I login with cinnamon I just get the background image. I can login with gnome though. I have tried to completely remove cinnamon and nemo and reinstall it but it didn't help. I have no idea of how to get any king of diagnostics so if you ask something please explain how to do it or post a link with explanations. Many thanks for the help, I hope I will not need to format the pc again to make it work.

  The StreamInsight Team is proud to announce the release of StreamInsight V2.0! This is the version that ships with SQL 2012, and as such it has been available through Connect to SQL CTP customers already since December. As part of the SQL 2012 launch activities, we are now making V2.0 available to everyone, following our tradition of providing a separate download page. StreamInsight V2.0 includes a number of stability and performance fixes over its predecessor V1.2. Moreover it introduces a dependency on the .NET Framework 4.0, as well as on SQL 2012 license keys. For these reasons, we decided to bump the major version number, even though V2.0 does not add new features or API surface. It can be regarded a stepping stone to the upcoming release 2.1 which will contain significantly new APIs (that will depend on .NET 4.0). Head over here to download StreamInsight V2.0. • c# video equivalent to image.fromstream? Or changing the scope of the following script to allow vide

  The following is a part of an upload class in a c# script. I'm a php programmer, I've never messed with c# much but I'm trying to learn. This upload script will not handle anything except images, I need to adapt this class to handle other types of media also, or rewrite it all together. If I'm correct, I realize that using (Image image = Image.FromStream(file.InputStream)) basically says that the scope of the following is Image, only an image can be used or the object is discarded? And also that the variable image is being created from an Image from the file stream, which I understand to be, like... the $_FILES array in php? • Drupal migration failed

  First of all, I'm new to Drupal and the work I have to do is some kind of too hard. My old colleague (webmaster) had a server with a multisite Drupal 6 installation. Sites and their dirs were (e.g.) Sites Site directory b.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/b.a.mycompany.com c.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/c.a.mycompany.com d.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/d.a.mycompany.com Unluckily my colleague moved and server hdd aren't in my hands: all I have is a backup of /drupal_install_dir and three sql dumps (one for each site). I had to restore three sites, but changing them as z.mycompany.com/b z.mycompany.com/c z.mycompany.com/d Beeing a sysadmin, I Extracted tar.gz backup file under wwwroot (let's call full path to extracted directory /new_install_dir) Restored three databases Created mysql users and give them correct GRANTS on databases Then (trying to restore at least first site) I changed /new_install_dir/sites/settings.php putting correct database connection data and new basepath. But there is no way I can see my new site, simply it doesn't work. Watching /var/log/apache2/error.log I saw Drupal searching for main drupal database; so I created that db too setting user and grants, but dump file is empty. Well, now I can run something like install.php or update.php, but my site is not shown. Is there something I can do? Do I have to walk another way? Consider I searched the web, but I'm not able to find a guide that can help me for my problem. Ah, I forgot: before producing the backup, my colleague set site in maintenance mode. When I try to run z.mycompany.com/?q=user (trying to login) nothing happens. I'm really stuck...

• Display glitches running ATI propietary driver under Ubuntu 12.10

  I have a lot of problems with the Ati propietary driver (fglrx). I have an iMac (mid 2011) with a Radeon HD 6900M [1002:6720]. I did not have any problem under Ubuntu 12.04, but since I updated to 12.10, I get some annoying graphic corruption. The worst one is that sometimes the screen does not update with the new information. It happens a lot when I change between tabs in Chrome or Sublime Text. It usually gets updated when I scroll the page. Sometimes, when I type, I have to wait a little bit to view the new characters. And I get trails when I move windows too (like a part of the window). After a while, the trail disappears. I tried to install fglrx, fglrx-updates and the new beta driver downloaded from Ati (12.11 Beta 11/16/2012), with no luck. It happens the same with all of them. I tried to mess with Compiz config, but it didn't fix anything. The open source driver does not suffer this problem, but I need the performance of the propietary driver . Do you have any clue? Thanks.
