  While I continue my affair with iOS / Android (which is now my bread / butter literally ); I also have managed to keep myself excited enough for all of new windows Stuff. Thanks to Priti Pushpak (my wife) for all the amazing Windows Phone 7 apps she is creating and uploading on appHub… I kind of like refreshing feel of win8 and apps. I also have fair bit of exposure on iPhone / iPad; Mac apps and I do put my two cents for win8 as well. If not an instant hit; win8 apps surely grows on you. So eventually win8 platform is here to stay. (oh yes and I cannot tell you how much hope I have for WP8 platform as well). Nevertheless; here is few topics I covered in a session on .Net 4.5  and on popular demand I am posting it all here… Note that for the demo you must have Win8 installed along with VS2012. • Ubuntu on galaxy note II

  I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note II on android 4.1. It was my idea to try to turn it into a pc and I bought a micro-keyboard for the same purpose. I had hoped there would be an app for OpenOffice, but there isn't. Now i see that ubuntu may be installed on smart phones. I already have ubuntu - including OpenOffice - on my laptop. My question is: is it possible to install ubuntu to galaxy note II, and if so, does it include office programs and other ubuntu programs?   i just recently installed ubuntu 11.04, english version that comes with libreoffice. I also installed Greek language. Is there some way to make Writer recognize my input language (English - Greek) and apply spelling check on the fly, according to my input language? For example, i type a sentence in English, then switch keyboard input (Alt-Shift) and type a sentence in Greek. Writer does no recognize the Greek sentence and underlines it red. MS Office and OO under Windows does it... As soon as you change input language (keyboard layout), the real time spelling checker changes also between languages... Thank you in advance...

• Higher Performance With Spritesheets Than With Rotating Using C# and XNA 4.0?

  I would like to know what the performance difference is between using multiple sprites in one file (sprite sheets) to draw a game-character being able to face in 4 directions and using one sprite per file but rotating that character to my needs. I am aware that the sprite sheet method restricts the character to only be able to look into predefined directions, whereas the rotation method would give the character the freedom of "looking everywhere". Here's an example of what I am doing: Single Sprite Method Assuming I have a 64x64 texture that points north. So I do the following if I wanted it to point east: spriteBatch.Draw( _sampleTexture, new Rectangle(200, 100, 64, 64), null, Color.White, (float)(Math.PI / 2), Vector2.Zero, SpriteEffects.None, 0); Multiple Sprite Method Now I got a sprite sheet (128x128) where the top-left 64x64 section contains a sprite pointing north, top-right 64x64 section points east, and so forth. And to make it point east, i do the following: spriteBatch.Draw( _sampleSpritesheet, new Rectangle(400, 100, 64, 64), new Rectangle(64, 0, 64, 64), Color.White); So which of these methods is using less CPU-time and what are the pro's and con's? Is .NET/XNA optimizing this in any way (e.g. it notices that the same call was done last frame and then just uses an already rendered/rotated image thats still in memory)?

• JList with JScrollPane and prototype cell value wraps element names (replaces with dots instead of s

  I've got a Jlist inside a JScrollPane and I've set a prototype value so that it doesn't have to calculate the width for big lists, but just uses this default width. Now, the problem is that the Jlist is for some reason replacing the end of an element with dots (...) so that a horizontal scrollbar will never be shown. How do I disable with "wrapping"? So that long elements are not being replaced with dots if they are wider than the Jlist's width? I've reproduced the issue in a small example application.   I am wondering which is the best way to go with java code. I need to create a class with simple prompts for input.. I have tried using both classes and cannot work out the particular benefits for each.   When upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 the distribution upgrade program freezes after it notifies me of a change in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.mysqld and asks me to keep the old file or accept the new changes (I accepted them). The terminal says: Configuration file `/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld' ==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation. ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : start a shell to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** usr.sbin.mysqld (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? y Installing new version of config file /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld ... The program hasn't done anything after this for about 2 hours now and I have no idea what I should do at this point. Can I quit the program and restart it? Or is there another action I should take? It did however change the '/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld' to the new version, but is still frozen...

• Trouble with collision detection in XNA?

  I'm trying to loop through an list of enemies (enemyList) and then any that have intersected the rectangle belonging to the box object (Which doesn't move), declare there IsAlive bool as false. Then another part of the code removes any enemies that have the IsAlive bool as false. The problem im having is getting access to the variable that holds the Rectangle (named boundingBox) of the enemy. When this is in a foreach loop it works fine, as the enemy class is declared within the foreach. However, there are issues in using the foreach as it removes more than one of the enemies at once (Usually at positions 0 and 2, 1 and 3, etc...). I was wondering the best way to declare the enemy class, without it actually creating new instances of the class? • jQuery replacing an image inside a .net datalist

  (submit said I was trying to post an image so I've changed image everywhere to ix I am trying to get jQuery to replace an ix inside a datalist. The original ix is the thumbnail ix of a product on a category page. The small ix I am clicking on are swatch ix for the different colors of a product. I can get it to work using a div tag around the ix tag inside the ItemTemplate. • Android - dialer icon gets placed in recently used apps after finish()

  In my application I detect the out going call when a call is dialled from the dialer or contacts. This works fine and I then pop up a dialog saying I have detected the call and then the user presses a button to close the dialog which calls finish() on that activity. It all works fine except that when I then hold the home key to bring up the recently used apps the dialer icon is there. And when it is clicked the dialog is brought back into focus in the foreground when the dialog activity should be dead and gone and not be able to be brought back to the foreground. Here is a picture of what I mean. So two questions arise, why would the dialer icon be getting placed there and why would it be recalling my activity to the foreground? Has anyone any idea why this might be happening?

• Handling commands or events that wait for an action to be completed afterwards

  Say you have two events: Action1 and Action2. When you receive Action1, you want to store some arbitrary data to be used the next time Action2 rolls around. Optimally, Action1 is normally a command however it can also be other events. The idea is still the same. The current way I am implementing this is by storing state and then simply checking when Action2 is called if that specific state is there. This is obviously a bit messy and leads to a lot of redundant code. Here is an example of how I am doing that, in pseudocode form (and broken down quite a bit, obviously): void onAction1(event) { Player = event.getPlayer() Player.addState("my_action_to_do") } void onAction2(event) { Player = event.getPlayer() if not Player.hasState("my_action_to_do") { return } // Do something } When doing this for a lot of other actions it gets somewhat ugly and I wanted to know if there is something I can do to improve upon it. I was thinking of something like this, which wouldn't require passing data around, but is this also not the right direction? void onAction1(event) { Player = event.getPlayer() Player.onAction2(new Runnable() { public void run() { // Do something } }) } If one wanted to take it even further, could you not simply do this? void onPlayerEnter(event) { // When they join the server Player = event.getPlayer() Player.onAction1(new Runnable() { public void run() { // Now wait for action 2 Player.onAction2(new Runnable() { // Do something }) } }, true) // TRUE would be to repeat the event, // not remove it after it is called. } Any input would be wonderful.

• What's the best way to use requestAnimationFrame and fixed frame rates

  I recently got into using the HTML5-requestAnimationFrame-API a lot on animation-heavy websites, especially after seeing the Jank Busters talk. This seems to work pretty well and really improve performance in many cases. Yet one question still persists for me: When wanting to use an animation that is NOT entirely calculated (think spritesheets for example) you will have to aim for a fixed frame rate. Of course one could go back to use setInterval again, but maybe there are other ways to tackle this. The two ways I could think of using requestAnimationFrame with a fixed frame rate are: var fps = 25; //frames per second function animate(){ //actual drawing goes here setTimeout(function(){ requestAnimationFrame(animate); }, 1000 / fps) } animate(); or var fps = 25; //frames per second var lastExecution = new Date().getTime(); function animate(){ var now = new Date().getTime(); if ((now - lastExecution) > (1000 / fps)){ //do actual drawing lastExecution = new Date().getTime(); } requestAnimationFrame(animate); } animate(); Personally, I'd opt for the second option (the first one feels like cheating), yet it seems to be more buggy in certain situations. Is this approach really worth it (especially at low frame rates like 12.5)? Are there things to be improved? Is there another way to tackle this?
