• gstreamer vaapi problem

  I installed gstreamer-vaapi from this PPA : ppa:guido-iodice/video sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-vaapi libgstvaapi-x11-0 libgstvaapi0 but, if I run totem movie player (via terminal) it's show this error : (totem:3383): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: g_object_set_valist: object class 'TotemScrsaver' has no property named 'reason' (totem:3383): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: value "10752000" of type 'guint' is invalid or out of range for property 'connection-speed' of type 'guint' libva: libva version 0.31.0 Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so libva error: /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so init failed libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 Segmentation fault It's seems I get wrong nvidia_drv_video.so. What should I do? If I uninstall it, it's work fine, but I want to use this vaapi backend for my video decoding via GPU while I run gstreamer based apps. • Flash doesn't work any more on 10.04

  I have a very strange problem with flash on my 10.04 system. (An update to 12.04 is not an option, because the system is just too old and slow.) After a recent update flash has just stopped working altogether. Youtube just shows a white square, vimeo a black one. After a 10.04 reinstall the problem stays the same. Not even chrome displays flash content, just a message that shockwave flash could not be loaded. 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' 'flashplugin-nonfree' and 'flashplugin-installer' are all installed in version 11.2.202.238ubuntu0.10.04.1.

• Flattening a Jagged Array with LINQ

  Today I had to flatten a jagged array.  In my case, it was a string[][] and I needed to make sure every single string contained in that jagged array was set to something (non-null and non-empty).  LINQ made the flattening very easy.  In fact, I ended up making a generic version that I could use to flatten any type of jagged array (assuming it's a T[][]): private static IEnumerable<T> Flatten<T>(IEnumerable<T[]> data) { return from r in data from c in r select c; } Then, checking to make sure the data was valid, was easy: var flattened = Flatten(data); bool isValid = !flattened.Any(s => String.IsNullOrEmpty(s)); You could even use method grouping and reduce the validation to: bool isValid = !flattened.Any(String.IsNullOrEmpty); Technorati Tags: .NET,LINQ,Jagged Array

• Package information was last updated 59 days ago even though Ubuntu is up to date

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and in the update manager I have a message that says package information last updated 59 days ago press the check button to check for software updates I do that, but i'm up to date. I checked other threads with this same problem, and saw i should do sudo apt-get update in a terminal to see which repository is not up to date and when I did, I got this message: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/Release Then I checked for this repository in software sources but couldn't find this specific one. In my /etc/apt/sources.list.d I have only one line: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu oneiric partner #Added by software-center So now I don't know what to do more. Should I upgrade to 12.04 and will it solve my problem? I wouldn't want to upgrade if there is a problem in the last version but I don't know much about Ubuntu so, can anyone help me please?   I am making a game which i will be open sourcing. Its a simple arcade like game but requires a network connection because it is meant to be played with other people. The thing i am worrying about is how would i be sure that the client is the one that i put out for the end user to play with? Kind of a like of sv_pure for Team Fortress 2. I was thinking of different ways to combat this such as the server requesting the client's version or even it's md5 hash but people with simple java knowledge could just force a method to always return what the server wants.

• Can't adjust brightness on Samsung RV420 with fn keys

  Typing ls /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness outputs /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness The max_brightness for the second is 8, but changing it with echo 2 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness doesn't change brightness. I can do it by using intel_backlight: echo 2000 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness (max_brightness: cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness outputs 4648). But I want to do this work with the fn brightness keys, as I always did. I don't know what happened to stop working, maybe the use of +1 monitor and removing it in a wrong time or a system update. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits in an Samsung RV420 notebook. Kernel Version is 3.2.0-27-generic. Could you help me? Please tell me what more info should I provide. Thanks!

I am currently debating between the traditional versioning convention [major].[minor].[revision] and my own, almost whimsical, [YYYY].[MM].[DD].[hh][mm] for a new project I am starting. I understand that [major].[minor].[revision] is probably the most popular versioning method on the planet and it is indeed pretty straightforward and reasonable, except that determining which changes merit the label "major", "minor" or even "revision" could be... subjective. A versioning system based on a timestamp is purely non-subjective and guarantees uniqueness. Which one would you choose for your project and why?

  I work in France as a Java programmer, mainly in French, but am a native English speaker. My level of French is pretty good (French wife!), but one thing I have problems with is working out whether to use English terminology or a French equivalent. Examples: lock (as in a synchronisation lock) - do I use the verb "locker" or do I use verrouiller? shard (databases) - "un shard" or "un tesson" (which means a shard of glass) ...and so-on... So, what do people recommend? Can anyone point out some good websites for translating this kind of terminology? The usual online translation tools are a bit too everyday English/French, not the slightly more specialised version that I find myself needing.

• How do I Set PATH in /etc/profile.d?

  I'm using zsh as my shell, and I'm trying to configure my environment. I usually define my $JAVA_HOME variable by creating a file: /etc/profile.d/java.sh with the following content export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/jdk export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH then I logout and back in, and it all works, but for some reason the PATH variable is not set. It recognizes JAVA_HOME, but not the new PATH, see this terminal snippet: ~ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0_05 ~ echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games and I confirmed it by trying to run a command form the jvm ~ java -version zsh: command not found: java the PATH doesn't include the $JAVA_HOME as it should. is there something else I should check? EDIT I have checked that if I run source /etc/profile.d/java.sh it all runs correctly and my variables get set as they should, but shouldn't the scripts in /etc/profile.d run automatically?

• AWStats: cannot access /var/log/apache2/access.log

  I installed awstats on my new Ubuntu Lucid server, but when cron tries to run it as user www-data, it complains that cannot access /var/log/apache2/access.log: Permission denied. In /usr/share/doc/awstats/README.Debian there's this paragraph: By default Apache stores (since version 1.3.22-1) logfiles with uid=root and gid=adm, so you need to either... 1) Change the rights of the logfiles in /etc/logrotate.d/apache so that www-data has at least read access. 2) As 1) but change to a specific user, and use the suEXEC feature of Apache to run as same user (and either change the right of /var/lib/awstats as well or use another directory). This is more complicated, but then the logs are not generally accessible to the server (which was probably the point of the Apache default). 3) Change awstats.pl to group adm (but beware that you are then taking the risk of allowing a CGI-script access to admin stuff on the machine!). I'd go with 1, but what are the recommended permissions to grant?

• Issues with ILMerge, Lambda Expressions and VS2010 merging?

  A little Background For quite some time now, it’s been possible to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly using ILMerge in Visual Studio 2008.  This is especially helpful when writing wrapper assemblies for 3rd-party libraries where it’s desirable to minimize the number of assemblies for distribution.  During the merge process, ILMerge will take a set of assemblies and merge them into a single assembly.  The resulting assembly can be either an executable or a DLL and is identified as the primary assembly. Issue During a recent project, I discovered using ILMerge to merge assemblies containing lambda expressions in Visual Studio 2010 is resulting in invalid primary assemblies.  The code below is not where the initial issue was identified, I will merely use it to illustrate the problem at hand. In order to describe the issue, I created a console application and a class library for calculating a few math functions utilizing lambda expressions.  The code is available for download at the bottom of this blog entry. The MathLib.dll assembly was built in release configuration and copied to the MathLib folder.  The following folder hierarchy was used for this example:   The project file for ILMergeLambdasConsole project file was edited to add the ILMerge post-build configuration.  The following lines were added near the bottom of the project file:  <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(Configuration)' == 'Release'"> <Exec Command="&quot;..\..\lib\ILMerge\Ilmerge.exe&quot; /ndebug /out:@(MainAssembly) &quot;@(IntermediateAssembly)&quot; @(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'&quot;%(FullPath)&quot;', ' ')" /> <Delete Files="@(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'$(OutDir)%(DestinationSubDirectory)%(Filename)%(Extension)')" /> </Target> The ILMergeLambdasConsole project was modified to reference the MathLib.dll located in the MathLib folder above. ILMerge and ILMerge.exe.config was copied into the ILMerge folder shown above.  The contents of ILMerge.exe.config are: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> </startup> </configuration> Post-ILMerge After compiling and building, the MathLib.dll assembly will be merged into the ILMergeLambdasConsole executable.  Unfortunately, executing ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe now results in a crash.  The ILMerge documentation recommends using PEVerify.exe to validate assemblies after merging.  Executing PEVerify.exe against the ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe assembly results in the following error:    Further investigation by using Reflector reveals the divisibleBy method in the MathHelpers class looks a bit questionable after the merge.     Prior to using ILMerge, the same divisibleBy method appeared as the following in Reflector: It’s pretty obvious something has gone awry during the merge process.  However, this is only occurring when building within the Visual Studio 2010 environment.  The same code and configuration built within Visual Studio 2008 executes fine.  I’m still investigating the issue.  If anyone has already experienced this situation and solved it, I would love to hear from you.  However, as of right now, it looks like something has gone terribly wrong when executing ILMerge against assemblies containing Lambdas in Visual Studio 2010. • Is there a difference between "." and "source" in bash, after all?

  I was looking for the difference between the "." and "source" builtin commands and a few sources (e.g., in this discussion, and the bash manpage) suggest that these are just the same. However, following a problem with environment variables, I conducted a test. I created a file testenv.sh that contains: #!/bin/bash echo $MY_VAR In the command prompt, I performed the following: > chmod +x testenv.sh > MY_VAR=12345 > ./testenv.sh > source testenv.sh 12345 > MY_VAR=12345 ./testenv.sh 12345 [note that the 1st form returned an empty string] So, this little experiment suggests that there is a difference after all, where for the "source" command, the child environment inherits all the variables from the parent one, where for the "." it does not. Am I missing something, or is this is an undocumented/deprecated feature of bash? [ GNU bash, version 4.1.5(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) ]

• Error when setting Piwik analytics

  I've uploaded the latest version of Piwik unto my web server, which is hosted by go daddy.com, on a linux hosting plan. I'm setting it up (accessing it from my browser as instructed) and I have the "Piwikinstallation" page open on step 3 (database set-up ) of 9. I don't know what to imput in the field "database server"... the default is the number 127.0.0.1 When I leave that input as is, and click "Next" leaving the gives the error: "Error when trying to connect to database server: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2013] Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111" and changing that input to "localhost" gives me another error: "Error when trying to connect to database server:SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"

  At my local university, there is a small student computing club of about 20 students. The club has several small teams with specific areas of focus, such as mobile development, robotics, game development, and hacking / security. I am introducing some basic agile development concepts to a couple of the teams, such as user stories, estimating complexity of tasks, and continuous integration for version control and automated builds/testing. I am familiar with some basic development life-cycles, such as waterfall, spiral, RUP, agile, etc., but I am wondering if there is such a thing as a software development life-cycle for hacking / breaching security. Surely, hackers are writing computer code, but what is the life-cycle of that code? I don't think that they would be too concerned with maintenance, as once the breach has been found and patched, the code that exploited that breach is useless. I imagine the life-cycle would be something like: Find gap in security Exploit gap in security Procure payload Utilize payload What kind of differences (if any) are there for the development life-cycle of software when the purpose of the product is to breach security?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 1

  I'm going to try something here... if it seems useful, I'll continue, if it doesn't, I'll stop... so give me feedback! There are *lots* of Apps in the WP7 Marketplace, and heaven help me, but the Marketplace sucks for finding stuff. I won't rehash what's already been said in the blogs, but I agree with one and all. I went out last Saturday to find 2 apps that I knew were released, and couldn't do so on my device. Even in the Zune app, it took quite a while to find them... ok, I'll back off a bit, because I just found out I can do 'Search' now if I know the name... I didn't think that was working before. So my thought is on Monday (like today), I will post a review of 5 apps/games I either use or have played with on my device. These are strictly my opinions, you understand, but hey... it's better than a poke in the eye with an iPhone! A few disclaimers:     Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week, and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. In this Issue:   Jingo! is the first app I bought, just to see what the experience was like. It's very much like a game we used to play in school in the Army in 1971 on paper we passed around. Sort of a cross between hangman and Mastermind, you try to figure out the hidden word in 5 tries. You get really good at 5-letter words after a while. I like this because you have to think, and you're not pressured by a clock Jingo! is by James Furdell and is $1.99 I reviewed René Schulte's Pictures Lab a while back, and have not changed my mind. This is an excellent app for playing with any photo on your device... one you've just taken, one you've synced from your PC, or one you've saved from email. I like this because you can get some cool effects for your photos, and it just works. Pictures Lab is by Schulte Software Development and is $1.99 Since I work as a consultant, and from home, I wanted something I could track my time with. I've test-driven all the contenders I could find so far on the phone, and so far I like ONTRACK! the best. If asked, I have some suggestions, but it's probably just the way I work or think. What I do like is I can tap a project to start/stop/restart a counter, and at the end of the day it shows me how much time I've been working. If there's a way to make an adjustment in case you forget to tap the counter, I don't know how to do it, and that's my biggest complaint. I like this because you can get a daily readout which you can also email as a spreadsheet. The daily results display is very good. ONTRACK! is by Qmino and is $2.99 Remember Item 4 above... I've been playing guitar for 48 years... obviously since before the invention of 'tuners', so I'm not as dependent upon these as some folks are. I've tried some in the past and have always felt I can do just as good by ear (I have perfect relative pitch). So, I gave this app by András Velvárt a dance just to see how it works, and it is surprisingly good. If you're used to one of the stage tuners this may take a little getting used to, but it does the job. The difference with this one is there is no real 'null' point inside which you can think your guitar is in tune. The soundwave stays visible on the device, and if it's moving to the right, your string is flat, if it's moving to the left, your string is sharp. Getting it exact might be tricky, but it is exact! If you need to rely on a tuner, this is a good choice in my opinion, exactly because of the sensitivity.. tune up with this and you're dead-on. Guitar Tuner is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $0.99 Popper 2 is the WP7 version of a wildly popular game by Bill Reiss named Dr. Popper. You can get a trial, or you can now get a free lite version of the game. Popper 2 is a fast-paced bubble breaker game. I find it something fun to play when I just want to buzz out, but maybe the best review is that my daughter didn't want to give my phone back when I showed it to her, and always wants to grab my phone to play 'that game'. • SP1 of RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010 released, featuring VS2010 and Client Profile support

  As always, Telerik's plans were closely aligned with Microsoft's release schedule, and we were dedicated to provide VS2010 support even before Visual Studio 2010 was officially launched. Now that the first VS2010 launch event is over, here comes the first of many Telerik Service Packs to support VS2010. This RadControls for WinForms release is the first to provide support for the Client Profile, introduced with .NET3.5, and now default when starting new windows forms projects with VS2010. The Client Profile is a smaller version of the.NET Framework that includes only the assemblies needed for deploying client-based applications, which in turn reduces the size of the application. Basically, the Design time classes are excluded from the Client Profile (CP), because they are only needed for designing and not for running an application. • How to update coffee script?

  I got a following error when I tried to watch coffee scripts by coffee -o js -cw coffee. /usr/local/lib/node_modules/coffee-script/lib/coffee-script/command.js:321 throw e; ^ Error: watch Unknown system errno 28 at errnoException (fs.js:636:11) at FSWatcher.start (fs.js:663:11) at Object.watch (fs.js:691:11) at /usr/local/lib/node_modules/coffee-script/lib/coffee-script/command.js:287:27 at Object.oncomplete (/usr/local/lib/node_modules/coffee-script/lib/coffee-script/command.js:100:11) I have no idea what is going with error. Then I checked the versions, coffee -v is 1.6.1 and node -v is v0.6.12.
