• Build one to throw away vs Second-system effect

  One one hand there is an advice that says "Build one to throw away". Only after finishing a software system and seeing the end product we realize what went wrong in the design phase and understand how we should have really done it. On the other hand there is the "second-system effect" which says that the second system of the same kind that is designed is usually worse than the first one; there are many features that did not fit in the first project and were pushed into the second version usually leading to overly complex and overly engineered. Isn't here some contradiction between these principles? What is the correct view over the problems and where is the border between these two? I believe that these "good practices" are were firstly promoted in the seminal book The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks. I know that some of these issues are solved by Agile methodologies, but deep down, the problem is still the principles still stand; for example we would not make important design changes 3 sprints before going live.

• Standby Problem, PC can not enter Standby mode

  I have a problem with the Standby function: My Computer does not enter the Standby mode with Ubuntu 14.04LTS. If I remeber me right it, works with Ubuntu 13.10 but this Version was not long installed on this PC. Now when i press Standby in the menu or on my Keyboard the Display turns black for a few seconds, then some messages appear for a very short moment on the screen. After that, the the log-in screen appear. Two times I was able to enter Standby but the other times it fails. Tecnical Data about my PC: Ubuntu 14.04 with all Updates main storage: 3,8GiBprocessor: Intel® Core™ i3-2330M CPU @ 2.20GHz × 4 graphic: Intel® Sandybridge Mobile graphic board: NVIDA GEFORCE GT 555M CUDA 1GB Dual Boot System with win7 x64Bit Medion P6812 Laptop Here is the message output: Usally I got only a half of the screen filled with messages like that. When I filmed it it was much more. I dont know, maybe this is a Bug.

• HOWTO Turn off SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration.

  Since we released hardware crypto acceleration for SPARC T4 and Intel AES-NI support we have had a common question come up: 'How do I test without the hardware crypto acceleration?'. Initially this came up just for development use so developers can do unit testing on a machine that has hardware offload but still cover the code paths for a machine that doesn't (our integration and release testing would run on all supported types of hardware anyway).  I've also seen it asked in a customer context too so that we can show that there is a performance gain from the hardware crypto acceleration, (not just the fact that SPARC T4 much faster performing processor than T3) and measure what it is for their application. With SPARC T2/T3 we could easily disable the hardware crypto offload by running 'cryptoadm disable provider=n2cp/0'.  We can't do that with SPARC T4 or with Intel AES-NI because in both of those classes of processor the encryption doesn't require a device driver instead it is unprivileged user land callable instructions. Turns out there is away to do this by using features of the Solaris runtime loader (ld.so.1). First I need to expose a little bit of implementation detail about how the Solaris Cryptographic Framework is implemented in Solaris 11.  One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.  The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax() and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so, and the unfortunately misnamed due to historical reasons libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  For SPARC T4 that would be: export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" and for Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes" This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  It also works for the Oracle DB and Java JCE.  However does not work for the default enabled OpenSSL "t4" or "aes-ni" engines (unfortunately) because they do explicit calls to getisax() themselves rather than using multiple ELF cap sections. However we can still use OpenSSL to demonstrate this by explicitly selecting "pkcs11" engine  using only a single process and thread.  $ openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 54170.81k 187416.00k 489725.70k 805445.63k 1018880.00k $ LD_HWCAP="-aes" openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 29376.37k 58328.13k 79031.55k 86738.26k 89191.77k We can clearly see the difference this makes in the case where AES offload to the SPARC T4 was disabled. The "t4" engine is faster than the pkcs11 one because there is less overhead (again on a SPARC T4-1 using only a single process/thread - using -multi you will get even bigger numbers). $ openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 85526.61k 89298.84k 91970.30k 92662.78k 92842.67k Yet another cool feature of the Solaris linker/loader, thanks Rod and Ali. Note these above openssl speed output is not intended to show the actual performance of any particular benchmark just that there is a significant improvement from using hardware acceleration on SPARC T4. • RadBook for Silverlight now supports virtualization

  I am proud to announce that RadBook, along with RadGridView, RadTreeView, RadTreeListView, RadChart and RadScheduler, now supports virtualization. With previous versions, it would take up to 16 seconds to load 1000 pages, where now it takes just 2 seconds to load a set of 10,000,000 (10 million) items.   The cause of the performance boost is the way RadBook handles the unnecessary(non-visible) elements. As you probably know, while turning a page, only four pages are visible at any given moment in time. Previous versions of RadBook would just collapse the unnecessary elements, which had a significant impact on the initial loading time. The new version of RadBook now takes advantage of the VirutalizingPanel and creates only as many elements as necessary for the book to render properly. • Visual Studio 2010: Fun with extensions

  One of the powerful things that has come into Visual Studio over the last few years has been joy of extensions. With 2010 there seems to be even more!! Of course teaching old dogs like myself new tricks always takes time but interestingly enough some of the rules I learnt early in my working life over 30 years ago still hold true!! A derivation of one that was knocked into during my engineering apprenticeship and associated exams was RTFQ! Read the ‘flippin’ question. (I replaced the original ‘F’ with a more palatable version here!). Today I forgot that rule and didn’t RTFI (I being instructions) and spent a fruitless hour wondering why my Entity Framework POCO generator never appeared in the new project template list when I wanted to add it!! It was simple of course – I had only installed the Entity Framework POCO generator for web sites and not building a web project meant it would never appear!!! A quick look again I found the ‘other’ extension that supported my project type! So RTFI!!

• MSR Issue on 12.1 Enterprise Controllers

  We've noticed a problem with MSR initialization and synchronization on Enterprise Controllers that are using Java 7u45. If you're running into the issue, these jobs fail with Java errors. Java 7u45 is bundled with Oracle Solaris 11.1 SRU 12, so if you're using that version or if you plan to use it, you should be aware of this issue. There's a simple fix. You can do the fix before upgrading to SRU 12, but you can't do it before you install the Enterprise Controller. First, log on to the Enterprise Controller system and stop the EC using the ecadm command. This command is in the /opt/SUNWxvmoc/bin directory on Oracle Solaris systems and in the /opt/sun/xvmoc/bin directory on Linux systems: ecadm stop -w Then run this command to fix the issue: cacaoadm set-param java-flags=`cacaoadm get-param -v java-flags -i oem-ec | sed 's/Xss256k/Xss384k/'` -i oem-ec And then restart the EC: ecadm start -w Once you apply this fix, you should be set.

• Create a package for official Realtek ALC665 drivers (Dell XPS 15 L502X)

  is it possible for someone to create an ALSA driver package from the official Realtek "LinuxPkg_5.17Beta.tar.bz2" drivers (found via Google)? These drivers provide excellent support for the ALC665 chipset, found eg. in the Dell XPS 15 notebook series (L502x). All the features like output selection (HDMI, headphones) that were not working before are supported. I am asking for a package because the driver is unusable as-is: it comes with an outdated version of ALSA that does not compile on a 3.5 kernel. Apart from that, it also removes all the default snd-* drivers that come with the kernel package. Any help in bringing better support for this device to the official Ubuntu packages is much appreciated. N.

But I have another Ubuntu based distribution on my laptop (BackTrack linux), which is also 10.04, but it has the b43 driver installed and the overall performance is MUCH better. So I would like to install it on this OS too, but even google didn't help me. So my question is how to install the latest b43 driver on my Ubuntu?

• Bumblebee : Module bbswitch could not be loaded

  I've upgraded to 12.04 and I had to switch from Ironhide to the latest version of Bumblebee. Now, when I try to run bumblebeed, I get this error: FATAL: Module bbswitch not found. [ERROR]Module bbswitch could not be loaded (timeout?) [WARN]No switching method available. The dedicated card will always be on. I don't really need to use the secondary VGA on Kubuntu, so I would like to find a way to definitely shut the discrete GPU down and avoid wasting battery. I can't disable it from the BIOS because I use it on Windows. My card is an nvidia 540M.

• Volume indicator issue after xubuntu 13.10 upgrade

  Last night I decided to upgrade my system to the latest version of Xubuntu, 13.10. The process went fine, but now I'm facing this strange issue. There is no sound settings available in the settings manager window and the volume indicator looks like when the volume is muted, clicking the indicator being broken as well. The indicator looks like this: I tried to do a alsa force-reload followed by a restart of the computer, but didn't help. Any thoughts ? l.e. After some digging I found out that the volume control exists, so this must be a volume indicator issue.

• How do I restrict my kids' computing time?

  Access to our computer (not only to the internet) needs to be restricted for the accounts of my kids (7, 8) until they are old enough to manage this by themselves. Until then we need to be able to define the following: the hours of the day when computing is o.k. (e.g. 5 - 9 pm) the days of the week when computing is not o.k. (e.g. mondays to fridays) the amount of time allowed per day (e.g. 2 hours) In 11.10 all of the following that used to do the job don't work any more: Timekpr: for 11.10 not available through the ppa. The installed version from 11.04 does not work in 11.10. Timoutd: command line alternative, but in 11.10 removed from the repositories. Gnome Nanny: Looks great but repeatedly crashes to force restarting X-server. So we can't use or recommed this program at the moment. Are there any other alternatives?

• Configuring Eclipse Xubuntu 12.04

  Just installed Eclipse 3.7.1 on my xubuntu 12.04. I used to have eclipse installed on my 10.04. You could choose new java project, java source files etc. but this version doesn't have these options. If i make a .java file, it's just plane text, no highlighting and no chance to compile. I have installed eclipse-jdt. I looked https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EclipseIDE this manual. It tells to modify /etc/eclipse/java_home file but there is no such file on my system, just eclipse.ini. Am i missing a step here or have i encountered some sort of a bug?

• How can I import models from Blender into jMonkeyEngine?

  I have some blender model files (Blender version 2.6) which I would like to use with the jMonkeyEngine SDK. However, when I use Blender's native .obj exporter, I can't import it in jMonkeyEngine (the model simply fails to import or looks messed up). I've tried importing .obj files or .blend files directly into the jMonkeyEngine SDK to no avail. I've also tried to use various OGRE exporters to export .scene and .material files, but only the .scene file is created. Is there a simple way to simply export files from Blender into the jMonkeyEngine SDK? EDIT: I seem to have found something in Blender. When I go under addons, there's a warning in the OGRE exporter; "'.mesh' output requires OgreCommandLineTools". However, I have already installed those tools under the C drive. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

• Parallel Installation of Ubuntu, Wubi and Windows 7?

  I have Windows 7 installed on a Notebook. Because I wanted to experiment with Ubutnu without loosing my Windows 7 configuration I installed the Wubi Version of Ubuntu inside of Windows 7. Since things seam to work out well with Ubuntu and my harddisk space is very limited, I want to make Ubuntu my only operating system on this machine. So my question is: Is it possible, to install Ubuntu 11.04 additionally to my actual configuration (Wubi and Windows 7)? And if things turned out well with the native installation of Ubuntu, too, to delete Wubi and Windows 7 from my system afterwards? Why I am asking this is simply, that I am afraid, that if I just format my machine and made the whole harddisk available for the fresh Ubuntu installation, it could be possible, that it turns out, that one thing or an other would not work properly, like it did in Wubi. (Possible Network, VPN, and Firewall@work issues) In this case I'd like the possibility to switch back.

  I would like to install the latest Ubuntu Touch on a 2013 Nexus 7 tablet. Which version should I be looking for: the regular Ubuntu (for ARM platform) or a separate Ubuntu Touch? I understand that after Ubuntu Touch is in frantic development, but I would like to be able to keep track which one is which. I can see the following images: Ubuntu 14.09 RTM, daily-preinstalled Ubuntu Touch 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build, but only i386 and amd64; no ARM. Does it mean that ARM variant has moved to one of the first two links?

• How to Install Nvidia Drivers

  I just ordered the Nvidia GTX 560 card, which should arrive tomorrow. I have a dilemma, though. Should I keep using the driver which is available in "additional drivers" in Ubuntu (10.10), or should I install the driver from the nvidia site?
