• What should I do with my programming project?

  I've been working on a top secret project that has potential of becoming very popular. No one has done anything like it. The problem is I have no motivation to finish it, and its about 70% done. I also don't have the ability to sell & market the product. The documentation is a pain to write. I just want to finish the project , receive my reward and move on to other things. I know that if I were to release it as a product I'm going to have to do support, and do bug fixes. No thank you! I've thought of making it open source but I'm failing to see the benefits. My hard work is just going to be up for grabs isn't it? How can I abandon my project whilst getting rewarded for the work I've done so far?

• Ways to earn money through programming and/or programming knowledge [closed]

  It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

• If the bug is 5+ years old, then is it a feature?

  Allow me to add details: I work at an institutional place with many coders, testers, QA analysts, product owners, etc. and here is something that bugs me: We have been able to sell crappy (albeit pretty functional) software for over a decade. It has many features and the product is competitive, but there are a some serious bugs out there, as well as thousands of "paper cuts" - little annoyances that clients need to get used to. It pains me to look at some of the things because I firmly believe that if computers do not help to make our lives easier, then we should not use them. I have confidence in my colleagues - they are smart, able, and can improve things when the focus is on doing that. But, it can be difficult to file bugs against some old functionality without seeing them closed or forgotten. "It worked like that for ions" is a typical answer. Also, when QA does regression, they tend to look for anything that is different as much as anything that does not seem right. So, a fix to an old problem can be written up as a bug, because "it has been like that before even my time". The young coder in me thinks: rewrite this freaking thing! As someone who had the opportunity to be close to sales, clients, I want to give a benefit of a doubt to this approach. I am interested in your opinion/experience as well. Please try to consider risk, cost-to-benefit, and other non-technical factors.

• Using SDL Tridion 2011 Core Service to create Components programatically

  I have seen some of the questions/answers related to this topic here, however still I am not getting the suggestion which I want. So I am posting my question again here, and I would be thankful for your valuable time and answers. I would like to create “Component, Page, SG, Publication, Folders “ via programmatically in SDL Tridion Content Manager, and later on, I would like to add programmatically created components in Page and attach CT,PT for that page, and finally would like to publish the page programmatically. I have done these all the activities in SDL Tridion 2009 using TOM API (Interop DLL's), and I tried these activities in SDL Tridion 2011 using TOM.Net API. It was not working and later on I came to know that, TOM.Net API will not support these kinds of works and it is specifically only for Templates and Event System. And finally I came to know I have to go for Core services to do these kinds of stuffs. My Questions: When I create console application to create component programmatically using core service, what are the DLL’s I have to add as reference? Earlier, I have created the exe and ran in the TCM server, the exe created all the stuffs, can I used the same approach using core services too? Will it work? Is BC still available or Core Service replaced BC? (BC-Business Connector) Can anyone send some code snippet to create Component/Page (complete class file will be helpful to understand better) Thanks Jai

• Anomalous results getting color components of some UIColors

  I'm trying to extract the rgb components of a UIColor in order to hand-build the pixels in a CGBitmapContext. The following sample code works fine for most of the UIColor constants but, confusingly, not all. To wit: CGColorRef color = [[UIColor yellowColor] CGColor]; const float* rgba = CGColorGetComponents(color); float r = rgba[0]; float g = rgba[1]; float b = rgba[2]; float a = rgba[3]; NSLog( @"r=%f g=%f b=%f a=%f", r, g, b, a); The results for [UIColor yellowColor] above are r=1.000000 g=1.000000 b=0.000000 a=1.000000, as expected. [UIColor redColor] gives r=1.000000 g=0.000000 b=0.000000 a=1.000000, again as expected. Similarly for blueColor and greenColor. However, the results for [UIColor blackColor] and [UIColor whiteColor] seem completely anomalous, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong (if indeed I am). To wit, [UIColor blackColor] gives r=0.000000 g=1.000000 b=0.000000 a=0.000000, which is a tranparent green, and [UIColor whiteColor] gives r=1.000000 g=1.000000 b=0.000000 a=0.000000, which is a transparent yellow. I'd appreciate it if somebody could either: (1) explain what I'm doing wrong (2) replicate my anomalous results and tell me it's not me, or (3) hit me over the head with a big hammer so it stops hurting so much. • Perl: remove relative path components?

  I need to get Perl to remove relative path components from a Linux path. I've found a couple of functions that almost do what I want, but: File::Spec->rel2abs does too little. It does not resolve ".." into a directory properly. Cwd::realpath does too much. It resolves all symbolic links in the path, which I do not want. • Implementing Drag and Drop using MouseListener for custom Components

  I am working on a school assignment that requires me to be able to pick up a tile, drag it to a location, then drop it there. I was able to get this working using TransferHandler and a bunch of stuff from the dnd package, but this is not an acceptable way to perform this action for this assignment according to the professor. So, I am trying to achieve the same effect using the MouseListener interface. The basic setup is this: I have a JPanel-derived class called LocationView that contains JLabel-dervived instances of TileView. I need to get events that give me the LocationView that has the mouse pressed on and the LocationView that has the mouse released on. I am proxying mouse events through the TileView to its containing LocationView so that I can properly handle the mousePressed event. I added System.out.println()'s to the mouse listeners for mousePressed and mouseReleased to both LocationView and TileView so that I could observe the events that were being generated. To my surprise, pressing the mouse on Tile A in Location A, then dragging to Location B and releasing would generate a mouse released event for both Tile A and Location A, but not for Location B. I need the mouse released event triggered for only Location B. To try to work around this, I tried implementing a glass pane based off of the FinalGlassPane found at http://weblogs.java.net/blog/2006/09/20/well-behaved-glasspane. After adding the glass pane and adding an event listener for it, I can see that the mouse events are indeed filtering through the glass pane, but the mouse released event is still only being called on the item the mouse was clicked on. Is there a way to have mousePressed and mouseReleased events associated with the same drag action be called on separate components?

• Accelerometer gravity components

  Hi, I know this question is definitely solved somewhere many times already, please enlighten me if you know of their existence, thanks. Quick rundown: I want to compute from a 3 axis accelerometer the gravity component on each of these 3 axes. I have used 2 axes free body diagrams to work out the accelerometer's gravity component in the world X-Z, Y-Z and X-Y axes. But the solution seems slightly off, it's acceptable for extreme cases when only 1 accelerometer axis is exposed to gravity, but for a pitch and roll of both 45 degrees, the combined total magnitude is greater than gravity (obtained by Xa^2+Ya^2+Za^2=g^2; Xa, Ya and Za are accelerometer readings in its X, Y and Z axis). More detail: The device is a Nexus One, and have a magnetic field sensor for azimuth, pitch and roll in addition to the 3-axis accelerometer. In the world's axis (with Z in the same direction as gravity, and either X or Y points to the north pole, don't think this matters much?), I assumed my device has a pitch (P) on the Y-Z axis, and a roll (R) on the X-Z axis. With that I used simple trig to get: Sin(R)=Ax/Gxz Cos(R)=Az/Gxz Tan(R)=Ax/Az There is another set for pitch, P. Now I defined gravity to have 3 components in the world's axis, a Gxz that is measurable only in the X-Z axis, a Gyz for Y-Z, and a Gxy for X-Y axis. Gxz^2+Gyz^2+Gxy^2=2*G^2 the 2G is because gravity is effectively included twice in this definition. Oh and the X-Y axis produce something more exotic... I'll explain if required later. From these equations I obtained a formula for Az, and removed the tan operations because I don't know how to handle tan90 calculations (it's infinity?). So my question is, anyone know whether I did this right/wrong or able to point me to the right direction? Thanks! Dvd

• Components inside a repeater not resizing as expected

  I have an mxml panel in which I'm using a repeater. The panel can be resized horizontally and I would like for the repeated components to resize together with panel. Here is a simplified example of how things look like: <mx:TitleWindow xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical" ...> <!-- scripts and some controls --> <mx:VBox width="100%"> <core:Repeater width="100%" dataProvider="model"> <ns1:MyItemRenderer width="100%" /> </core:Repeater> </mx:VBox> </mx:TitleWindow> When I resize the component, the width of the repeated items does not change. There also buttons and event handlers, which add and remove items from the model. When this is done, the repeater updates to display the correct number of items and all the items are resized correctly. I have not been able to get the items to resize when the root panel is resized. I can see, that the VBOx around the repeater is getting a resize event. However, the repeated items are not getting the event. I tried to dispatch a resize event to the repeated items manually from a resize handler I hooked up to the VBox but that didn't help. I also tried adding and removing a dummy-item from the ArrayCollection which is the dataProvider (because that triggers a correct resize otherwise as mentioned above) However, doing this in the resize handler of the VBox just leads to the repeater not showing any items at all. Is there any way to get items in a repeater to resize with their enclosing container?

  Is it possible to add JSF Components using javascript? In my case , on change of a select option , i need to display a different combination of input controls (like text box(s)). • [IceFaces] Why are validators of unchanged components called?

  I have a IceFaces-form and several input fields. Let's say I have this: <ice:selectOneMenu id="accountMenu" value="#{accountController.account.aId}" validator="#{accountController.validateAccount}"> <f:selectItems id="accountItems" value="#{accountController.accountItems}" /> </ice:selectOneMenu> and this: <ice:selectOneMenu id="costumerMenu" value="#{customerController.customer.cId}" validator="#{customerController.validateCustomer"> <f:selectItems id="customerItems" value="#{customerController.customerItems}" /> </ice:selectOneMenu> If I change one value, the respective validator is called, what is fine. But also the other validator is called, which is not fine, because the user get's an irritating message to insert a value to a field he maybe was just going to pay attention to. It's like poking the user with a stick to "Hurry up now!". BAD! I thought the attribute "partialSubmit" is controlling this behaviour, so only the one DOM-part is submitted, which is affected by the user interaction, but if I declare the both components to be partially submitted, nothing changes. Still both validators are called if one component value is changed. How can I prevent the whole form from being validated until it is submitted completely?

• Compile Delphi component package (bpl) for different Delphi versions

  Hello. The situation is the following. Typically I use RAD Studio 2010 for Delphi development. I have some components I would like to redistribute in binary form (*.bpl without source). But I would like people to be able to use them despite of their Delphi version. But, for example, dcu files can be used only by compiler version, which generated them. Almost the same situation is with bpl files as I know. Every bpl file will require corresponding VCLXX.bpl library depending on Delphi version. How do I make my bpls, compiled in 2010 to be able to be used in Delphi7, 2007 etc? Is the only solution to have ALL Delphi versions installed and compile bpl files separately in each?

  I have been looking at game engine design (specifically focused on 2d game engines, but also applicable to 3d games), and am interested in some information on how to go about it. I have heard that many engines are moving to a component based design nowadays rather than the traditional deep-object hierarchy. Do you know of any good links with information on how these sorts of designs are often implemented? I have seen evolve your hierarchy, but I can't really find many more with detailed information (most of them just seem to say "use components rather than a hierarchy" but I have found that it takes a bit of effort to switch my thinking between the two models). Any good links or information on this would be appreciated, and even books, although links and detailed answers here would be preferred.

• Wicket : Can a Panel or Component react on a form submit without any boilerplate code?

  I am currently evaluating Wicket and I am trying to figure out how things work. I have a question regarding form submit and panels (or other components). Imagine a custom wicket panel which contains a text field, doing as-you-type validation using ajax. This panel is added to a form. How can the Panel react a form submit (let's say because javascript/ajax is unavailable)? I am currently only aware of one solution: calling a panel's method inside the Form onSubmit() method. But this seems not like a "reusable" approach here, because I have to add boilerplate code to every form's onSubmit() which contains the panel (and every developer which use the panel must know this). So here comes my question: Is there any way that a Panel/Component can "detect" a form submit in some way? Or is there any other solution beside this? Thank you.

Near as I can tell the component isn't working and I've no idea as to why.   Having spent several hours reading about the features and limitations of services like DropBox and Jungle Disk and the hundreds of competitors they seem to have (as though everyone with an AWS account these days goes ahead and writes a file sharing application just for fun), I have yet to find one that would let a team of people at a small business collaborate without stepping all over each other's toes. At a small business there are often many small documents per project — estimates, contracts, project plans, budgets — and team members frequently have to open and edit them, with all sorts of problems happening if two people edit a file at once. Even if a sharing service is smart enough to keep both versions of the file created, most small-business software (like word processors, spreadsheets, estimating software, or billing systems) has no way to compare — much less to merge! — the changes in two rival versions of a file that two people edited at the same time without each other's knowledge. So, my question: are their cloud-based file sharing solutions that not only provide a virtual network drive that people can access, but that also let users lock files — even if it's not a real lock but just a flag or indicator — that could possibly prevent remote workers from both editing the same file at once? Having one person wait for another person to finish editing is a very, very small inconvenience compared to the hour or more than it can take to compare two estimates by hand until you find and resolve the rival changes. Given this fact, I am surprised that almost none of the popular file sharing solutions seem to recognize this problem and provide some solution! Does anyone know of a service that does?

• How could one track all emails sent from employees?

  My client runs a small business. This business has a small number of employees. For various reasons, my client would like to be able to have a copy of all of the emails sent from their employees BCC'd to them. The net effect here would be similar to the access they would have if they hosted their email through Exchange but the business is too small to make this a feasible option. They are currently hosted through GoDaddy. I have not investigated it myself personally but apparently GoDaddy can do something along these lines for all incoming email but not for outgoing email. Is there a way to set up email accounts for a particular domain to where a specified admin user could be copied on all outgoing email? UPDATE: I've modified the title to reflect that it's employees not just users who are the goal here. Also I forgot to mention how they currently do email through GoDaddy - POP3. I think maybe IMAP is also possible through GoDaddy, not sure. And yes, the bottom line here is to basically emulate a feature of a larger-class platform through a smaller, cheaper platform. Opinion-only answers should probably be relegated to the comments. For the sake of argument let's say that any legal requirements have been met.

Currently the emails are all done through POP3 so all the email is basically housed in files on individual machines (remember, small business). It's been proposed an inexpensive solution to this would be to have all emails BCC'd to a main account so that conversations with the outside would could be archived and tracked. I have not investigated it myself personally but apparently GoDaddy can do something along these lines for all incoming email but not for outgoing email. So my concerns are :- 1. The free sql express database that i am currently using have a limitation of 10 GB i think So i want to buy SQL server for small business to remove the database limitations. So my questions that i need help with them are:- **1. If i use the sql server for small business then will my web application have other limitations on production i am unaware of ? 2. Will be using SQL server for small business my right choice? baring in my that the system will be used by 2-4 clients only? 3. How much does “approximate ” the sql server database will cost in US dollars? 4. • MVC2 jQuery Validation & Custom Business Objects

  I have an application that was built with MVC1 and am in the process of updating to MVC2. I have a custom DLL and BLL, of which the model objects are custom business objects that reside in a separate class library. I was using this validation library in MVC1, which worked great. It worked great, but I want to eliminate the extra plugins and use what is available. Rather than use the Enterprise Library validation attributes I have converted to using DataAnnotations and want to use jQuery validation as the client side validation. My questions are: 1) Is the MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation JS file still required, where do I download. 2) How to you automate the validation to views that do not have models, IE Membership sign in page? 3) How to you add model errors in a custom business layer. Thanks for any help or guidance.

  I'm trying to clean my code to make it unit-testable. I know that unit tests must be created while coding but... I have to do it now, with code completed. My business class is full of methods with a similar implementation like: var rep=new NHrepository<ModelClass1>(Session); rep.Where(x=>x.Field1==1).ToList(); first error (from my point of view) is that I don't have to use "new" but instead use DI and add in the ctor parameters a INHrepository modelClass1Repository. If in my class I have two or more repository of different model class? Each must be in the ctor? Or probably business class is not build with SeparationOfConcern principle?

  Most freelance developers are essentially contractors - working full time and often hired through another company. What are the best options for real freelancing or small business built around development skills? (I am only looking for local clients, odesk etc is not interesting) Most options open for small companies are web sites. But most clients don't want to pay much, and there are lots of people that are willing to do it for very little money. Think if you want to do money that way you must be a "web site" business. Think the best option should be to work for companies spending a lot of resources on web and db? How could I get in touch with them? Other ideas? Part of my concept is to use some off-shoring to complement my skillset, so i should be able to do PHP or Drupal even if I am not at expert level.
