• File private variables in PHP

  Is it possible to define private variables in a PHP script so these variables are only visible in this single PHP script and nowhere else? I want to have an include file which does something without polluting the global namespace. It must work with PHP 5.2 so PHP namespaces are not an option. And no OOP is used here so I'm not searching for private class members. I'm searching for "somewhat-global" variables which are global in the current script but nowhere else. In C I could do it with the static keyword but is there something similar in PHP? Here is a short example of a "common.php" script: $dir = dirname(__FILE__); set_include_path($dir . PATH_SEPARATOR . get_include_path()); // Do more stuff with the $dir variable When I include this file in some script then the $dir variable is visible in all other scripts as well and I don't want that. So how can I prevent this?

• How to call another PHP script from a PHP script?

  Hello, I have a PHP script that has a runtime of 34 seconds. But it dies after 30 seconds. I guess my webhost a time limit of 30 seconds. I am thinking of splitting the script into two parts say PHP-1 and PHP-2. Can I call PHP-2 from PHP-1 and kill PHP-1? Both scripts have to run in sequence, so calling both of them using cron is not possible. [ My host provides cron with interval 5 mins and does not allow to change the start time] -Will this circumvent the time limit set by host?

• PHP: session isnt saving before header redirect

  Hi guys, I have read through the php manual for this problem and it seems quite a common issue but i have yet to find a solution. I am saving sessions in a database. My code is as follows: // session $_SESSION['userID'] = $user->id; header('Location: /subdirectory/index.php'); Then at the top of index.php after the session_start(), i have var_dumped the $_SESSION global and the userID is not in there. As i said ive looked through the PHP manual (http://php.net/manual/en/function.session-write-close.php) and neither session_write_close or session_regenerate_id(true) worked for me. Does anybody know a solution? Edit: I have session_start() at the top of my file. When i var_dump the session global before the header redirect, i see the userID in there, but not in the other file, which is in a subdirectory of this script Thanks, Matt

  I am working on windows. I am building a twitter application which periodically checks for new tweets as well as allows users to update their status. I have written separate PHP files for reading (reader.php) and writing tweets (writer.php). The only problem is how do I periodically read the tweets. There are a few ways which I can think of - 1) Use a time-based job scheduler (like Cron) to periodically run the reader.php. How do I do this? 2) Use multithreading to run both reader and writer.php and use a timer function in reader.php Suggestions?

  hi, i am new to a php site, only familiar with .net web forms sites. i can't figure out how routing is working on this php site. www.oursite.com/suggestions.php is to suggestions.php www.oursite.com/suggestions also loads the php fine www.oursite.com/suggestions/ loads the php, but no css is applied www.oursite.com/suggestions/anything - anything that comes after the '/' is ignored and suggestions is loaded without css. so oursite.com/suggestions////// works, as does oursite.com/suggestions/2/2/2/2/whatever i have searched but not found any good explanation on how this is working. can someone explain or provide a good resource? thank you.

• PHP Extension using libtidy compiles, but does not load

  I wrote an extension in C++ that uses libtidy, and it runs perfectly under PHP when I compile PHP --with-tidy. However, it would be nice to have the extension run on a vanilla PHP. When I try to use the extension, I get something like: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'extension.so': undefined symbol: tidyCleanAndRepair in Unknown on line 0 and the extension is not loaded. Obviously, the official tidy extension works fine. I have the relevant libtidy development packages installed on the system, and it compiles+links without a problem. I have tried to look through the code for the tidy extension, but it is a huge mass of macros - copying pieces at random felt like cargo code. Besides linking to the library with PHP_ADD_LIBRARY_WITH_PATH(tidy, $TIDY_LIBDIR, TIDY_SHARED_LIBADD), Is there a PHP extension or C statement that fixes this error? Thanks in advance!!

• What is the scope of require_once in PHP?

  Simple question: Is the scope of require_once global? Or does it rely on the already required file from the main php file (analagous to calling require_once twice consecutively for the same include file)?   Hi, I am going crazy with this error: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by... Please note that I know about the gazillion results on google and on stack overflow. My problem is the way I've constructed my pages. To keep html separate from php, I use include files. I can't have the header redirect before the output so having output buffering on is the only thing I can do. Naturally it works fine that way - but having to rely on that just stinks. It would be nice if PHP had an alternative way to redirect or had additional parameters to tell it to clear the buffer.

  Hi, I just got my ssl certificate to work for the first time. For some reason when I connect to my website using https my browser tries to download the php file. I have the following line in my httpd.conf. Isn't this the line which makes sure php files are run using php? AddType application/x-httpd-php .php What else do I need to change so that I can get the php files to work over the https connection. Thanks!

• How to use PHP-based authentication from non-PHP based AJAX app?

  I've been asked to create a stand-alone webapp using "straight" HTML and Javascript that does user authentication against an existing PHP app (backend is MySQL). Unfortunately, I really don't have a firm grasp on how PHP authentication works, and I'd rather not invest a lot of time in learning PHP just for this particular case. I can see two possibilites so far 1) create a PHP wrapper around my new app and use native PHP authentication (don't like this) 2) create a simple REST-ful webservice around the PHP authentication (don't know how to do this) Anything else I should consider? • IIS 8 - PHP Manager - Enabling php_oci8.dll for Oracle Connection

  I would need to connect to Oracle DB in my PHP codes. I'm using Windows Server 2012, IIS 8 with PHP Manager. I opened IIS PHP Manager, then go to PHP Extensions, then I enabled "php_oci8.dll" extension. However when I tried to connect to Oracle DB I'm getting the following PHP error: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function oci_connect() I just restarted the IIS using the IIS Manager, but didn't done computer reboot. Do I need to reboot? Do I also need to download "instantclient-basic-windows.x64-12.1.0.1.0.zip"? If yes, do I just need to set it to classpath "Path" where I extracted? • jQuery - Save to SQL via PHP

  This is probably easy for you guys, but I can't understand it. I want to save the filename of an image to it's own row in the SQL base. Basically, I log on to the site where I have my own userID. And each user has its own column for background images. And the user can choose his own image if he wants to. So basically, when the user clicks on the image he wants, a jquery click event occurs and an ajax call is made to a php file which is supposed to take care of the actual update. The row for each user always exist so there's only an update of the data that's necessary. First, I collect the filename of the css property 'background-image' and split it so I get only the filename. Line 8 in 'save_to_db.php' is this one: mysql_query("UPDATE brukere SET brukerBakgrunn = $uploadstring WHERE brukerID=" .$_SESSION['id'] .""; Not sure if you need to see db_connect.php as well. I can add that later if you need to see it. So what am I missing here?
