  I heard just Microsoft Expressions studio from my project manager and he told me to explore on it and find out if we can do development faster using it as compared to vs2008, I started downloading trial version and started googling about it, but I couldn't find answers to following questions Why Microsoft came out with new IDE when they already have very successful one i.e. the visual studio ? How its different that visual studio ? Does it offer advantages over visual studio ? Can somebody please help me find out these answers ?

  Hi, i am trying to upload a file with upload.class and i need to overwrite the file when the user upload a new one. But instead of overwriting, he is putting photo_01, photo_02, etc... • Converting ASP.NET MVC to n-Tiered Architecture

  I just built an application using ASP.NET MVC. The programmers at my company want to build all future modules using n-Tiered (Presentation Layer, Business Logic Layer, Data Access Layer) architecture. I am not the programmer and need to know why this makes sense? Do I have to completely rewrite the entire code or can it be converted? We are building an HRIS system with Business Intelligence. Somebody please explain why or why not this approach does or does not make sense.

• Windows Identity Foundation - Local STS on Windows Azure.

  Hello, I am trying to use Federated authentication on Azure. I found a example of having a local sts outside azure which is used for authentication from a web role hosted in azure. This works perfectly. My issue is, i dont want to have an application outside azure. Instead, I want to host the local sts website also in azure. So in effect I will have two web roles (1. my actual website, 2. the sts). I tried the above approach my creating a new webrole and moving the files from my original sts project. But i am getting compilation errors even if I reference the required dlls. I have also set "copy local" to true. It will be very helpful if somebody can guide me.. Thanks

  Hi, I have a question. Somebody, who was working on my code before me, created some method and passed Runnable as parameter, more likely: void myMethod(Runnable runnable){ runnable.run(); } Then calling myMethod out of main looks like: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new Runnable(){ public void run() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } So, to supply parameter to myMethod I need to instantiate object of (in this case anonymous) class implementing Runnable. My question is: is it necessary to use Runnable in this example? Can I use any different interface? I mean I can create new interface with single method i.e. interface MyInterface{ void doThis(); } then change look of myMethod: void myMethod(MyInterface myObject){ myObject.doThis(); } And of course client too: public static void main(String args[]) { try { myMethod(new MyInterface (){ public void doThis() { //do something...; }}); } catch (Throwable t) { } } Or maybe something is about Runnable?!

  I'm trying to calculate somebody's bowel health based on a points system. I can edit the data structure, or logic in any way. I'm just trying to write a function and data structure to handle this ability. Pseudo calculator function: // Bowel health calculator var points = 0; If age is from 30 and 34: points += 1 If age is from 35 and 40: points += 2 If daily BMs is from 1 and 3: points -= 1 If daily BMs is from 4 and 6: points -= 2 return points; Pseudo data structure: var points_map = { age: { '30-34': 1, '35-40': 2 }, dbm: { '1-3': -1, '4-6': -2 } }; I have a full spreadsheet of data like this, and I am trying to write a DRY version of code and a DRY version of this data (ie, probably not a string for the '30-34', etc) in order to handle this sort of thing without a humongous number of switch statements.

• PropelBundle database:create for postgres

  I've installed propel bundle for symfony2. my database configuration is: propel: dbal: driver: pgsql user: postgres password: postgres dsn: pgsql:host=localhost;port=5432;dbname=test_database options: {} attributes: {} When i wan to create this database from console (console propel: database:create) i have got strange error : Unable to open PDO connection [wrapped: SQLSTATE[08006] [7] FATAL: database "pgsql" does not exist. i created pgsql database on my localhost and everything was good. Database "test_database" was succesfull created. Can somebody explain me why i got this previous error? On mysql i've created database without any problems.

  I know I'll get into all kinds of trouble for bringing this up on SO, but considering that nearly all of us programmers depend on the Internet to get our jobs done, I really think it's worth looking into today's failure of our right to use the Internet by way of Lobbying ISPs. Although something tells me there will be retribution for the actions of the ISPs/tel cos/cable and their lobbyist since, lets face it...ISPs/Telcos didn't invent the Internet. I'm not going to be the one to do it, but um I think somebody already has...as everybody I talked to was having Internet connection problems today at work. Just thought this might be relevant to all of our jobs...in the U.S.A. at least. If you work at an Big evil ISPs, by all means...try and close this question. • How can I create a class diagram with NetBeans' 6.8 UML module?

  It seems to me the UML module of NetBeans is a bit too much hidden. In NetBeans 6.5 it was very easy to create an UML diagram. No plugin installation necessary or sth. like. Read my post where I found a zip file to install the UML module. And now, after this procedure, I got the UML module back, but it seems to me that I cannot create class diagram with it. Do you know how I can do this with NetBeans 6.8? Update1: There seems to be no support Update2: Nevertheless somebody seems to got it working.

  Got a controller in codeigniter who handles different sub sites. site/index/1 fetches content for subsite a site/index/2 fetches content for subsite b Now we decided to register domain names for these sub sites. so what we need: http://www.subsite1.com - default controller should be site/index/1 without the site/index/1 in the uri http://www.subsite2.com - default controller should be site/index/2 without the site/index/2 in the uri I fiddled and tried to play with routes.php but getting nowhere.. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

  Am I missing something or there really is no support for generic object type hinting in PHP 5.x? I find it really strange that hinting arrays is supported while hinting objects is not, at least not out of the box. I'd like to have something like this: function foo(object $o) Just as we have: function foo(array $o) Example of possible use: methods of an objects collection class. Workaround: using an interface "Object" implemented by all classes or extending all classes from a generic class "Object" and writing something like this: function foo(Object $o) Well, that just ain't cute.   In my application, I have a dictionary of phrases that are used throughout of the application. This same dictionary is used to create PDFs and Excel Spreadsheets. The dictionary looks like so: GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB = { 'fiscal_year': _('Fiscal Year'), 'region': _('Region / Focal Area'), 'prepared_by': _('Preparer Name'), 'review_cycle':_('Review Period'), ... snip ... } In the code to produce the PDF, I have: fy = dashboard_v.fiscal_year fy_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['fiscal_year'] rg = dashboard_v.dashboard.region rg_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['region'] rc = dashboard_v.review_cycle rc_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['review_cycle'] pb = dashboard_v.prepared_by pb_label = GLOBAL_MRD_VOCAB['prepared_by'] Now, when the PDF is produced, in the PDF, I don't see these labels but rather, I see: <django.utils.functional.__proxy__ object at 0x10106fdd0> Can somebody help me with this? • JBoss envers and huge audit tables

  All, I am auditing my JEE application with JBoss Evers and the nature of my application causes the audit table to grow very fast. The historic data is queried infrequently and access time is not really an issue, apart from the data from the last week. This data IS queried frequently and access needs to be fast. Ideally, I would split the data and distribute it over two tables, with the older data in compressed format. Unfortunately, Envers does not allow spreading data over multiple tables as far as I can tell from the docs. Does somebody have any idea what would be the best way to achieve this (if possible while still using Envers)? Cheers, LeChe

• getTextContent from Node with whitespace character normalization

  Hi, I am working with XPATH, Java and want to extract some text out of one html page. The text is located under some div with some whitespace characters in between, like &nbsp; <br> etc. I want these to be converted into 'space' and 'newline' respectively while extracting. The method I am using to extract text is Element.getTextContent() which does not respect whitespace characters. Could somebody tell me if there is a way to extract text with whitespace normalization OR Extract whole html markup under the 'Node' so that i could replace it by myself. Thanks Nayn

  What is a good setup for .hgignore file when working with Visual Studio 2008? I mostly develop on my own, only occasionly I clone the repository for somebody else to work on it. I'm thinking about obj folders, .suo, .sln, .user files etc.. Can they just be included or are there file I shouldn't include? • What's Your favorite f# use? where does f# makes life (a lot) easier (compared to c#)?

  I've skimmed the stack and did not get the overflow as there is probably no such question. I'm just learning f# and I am A seasoned c# and .net dev. I am into financial apps and currently F# helps me a lot with maths calcs like zero finding or minimum finding (although I still want some good maths library there). I see that processing multiple items (files or smth) tends to be easier, but my GUI (web, win) are still c# based. I am in the team of 5 devs and we know that the new tool is out, we are learning it after hours (to pimp ourselves up) but maybe we shouldn't bash the door somebody already opened. So in business apps, whats Your first killer part of soft You would code in F# (if You could and would know IT would be easier, faster, more testable, easier to maintain etc.? Business rules? ImageProcessing? Data processing? hope it's not to subjective. luke

• Delegation, is this just opinionated or is there a common pattern?

  If I have a java class containing substantial code and I wish to add extra features, am I right in thinking the delegate class would have the additional features added as methods. Then my original class would create the delegate object and just call the extra functionality via the delegate instance? I am being told by somebody else that my original class should become the delegate and that the class containing the new functionality should contain an instance of the original class, to use as a delegate? This seemed a little backward to me, because there would be far more delegate calls because most of the code is now in the delegate.... I was always under the impression the delegate object would contain the additional new behaviour and an instance of it would be in the original class to inboke the new behaviour from?

  Hi Can somebody fill me in on JavaScript Testing Frameworks? I'm working on a project now and as the JS (Mostly jQuery) libraries grow, it's getting more and more difficult to introduce change or refactor, because I have no way of guaranteeing the accuracy of the code without manually testing everything. I don't really know anything about JavaScript Testing Frameworks, or how they integrate/operate in a .Net project, so I thought I'd ask here. What would a good testing framework be for .Net? What does a JavaScript test look like? (e.g. with NUnit, I have [TestFixture] classes & [Test] methods in a ProjectTests assembly) How do I run a javascript test?   Hello , Can somebody help me out in creating compiled queries where input is to be a list of class objects? I have seen examples where Func<DataContext, somematchobject, IQueryable<T>> is created and compiled. But can I do something like Func<List<T>, matchObject, T>, and compile it? Basically I want an object(T) meeting certain conditions (as in matchObject) to be returned from a list of objects(List<T>). Will CompiledQuery.Compile help me in this? Please help me experts!!

• How to make javascript for font sizes fully language dependent?

  Hello All I have a multilanguage webiste English and Arabic. The javascript for the fontsizes is included in the theme not in the .css. Both language have different fontsize 16 and 12. When switching from English to Arabic the English letters such as ( dates and stuff like that ) are shown way too big. And when switching from English to Arabic the arabic letters are too small. • C++ - Resources in static library question

  Hello! This isn't a duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/531502/vc-resources-in-a-static-library because it didn't help :) I have a static library with TWO .rc files in it's project. When I build my project using the Debug configuration, I retrieve the following error (MSVS2008): fatal error LNK1241: resource file res_yyy.res already specified Note, that this happens only in Debug and Release library builds without any troubles. The command line for Resources page in project configuration looks the same for every build: /fo"...(Path here)/Debug/project_name.res" /fo"...(Path here)/Release/project_name.res" and I can't understand what's the trouble. Any ideas? UPDATE I don't know why this happens, but when I turn "Use Link-Time Code Generation" option on the problem goes away. Could somebody explain why does this happen? I feel like MS-compiler is doing something really strange here. Thanks.
