• Restore data from overwritten LVM

  I lost all of my data (8 TB) which I collected over the past few years yesterday because I made some seriuos mistakes during the remounting of my LVM. I run a XenServer5.6 installation with additional 4 harddisks for data storage. An LVM over those 4 HDDs was used to store all of my data. Yesterday, I reinstalled XenServer and wanted to mount my old Harddrives and add the LVM. I run xe sr-create [...] for all disks (/dev/sdb .. /dev/sde), but that was totally wrong. This command deletes the old LVM on the disks and created an new, empty lvm on every single disk with no partitions. No i got 4 empty harddrives :( Is it possible to recover some data from that lost LVM volumes? I have no clue how to do it because i deleted all informations about the old LVM. Is there a way to access the files insed that old lvm directly?

• New graphics card (GTX 760) slowing down entire PC

  My new graphics card is making my PC totally unusable. It boots up really slowly, and when the windows screen comes on, the mouse lags really far behind. Nothing opens at a normal speed. However, when I put in my 5-year old graphics card, it all works fine. I'm currently using a Foxconn Renaissance LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Motherboard, Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor, and a EVGA SuperNOVA 850G2 80PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V/EPS12V 850W Power Supply . I know it can't be the power supply, because I just bought it today to try to fix the problem. I've also installed the newest version of BIOS available for my motherboard. I've also seen extreme variations in CPU while the new graphics card is in, and when the old graphics card is installed, it is much calmer. Any thoughts?

• nginx regex characters that require quoting?

  So I was configuring nginx today and I hit a weird problem. I was trying to match a location like this: location ~ ^/([0-9]+)/(.*) { # do proxy redirects } ...for URLs like "http://my.domain.com/0001/index.html". This rule was never matching, despite the fact that it by all rights should. It took me awhile to figure out, based on this documentation, that some characters in regexes need to be quoted. The problem is, the documentation is for rewrites, and it specifically calls out curly braces, not square brackets. After a fair bit of experimentation that involved a lot of swearing, I discovered that I could fix the problem by quoting the regex like so: location ~ "^/([0-9]+)/(.*)" { # do proxy redirects } Is there a list somewhere of characters that nginx requires quoting regexes with? Or could there be something else going on here that I'm totally missing? This is my first nginx configuration job, so it's very possible I've misunderstood something...

• Running SQL*Plus with bash causes wrong encoding

  I have a problem with running SQL*Plus in the bash. This is working fine. My problem is that when I save the file script.sql my encoding goes wrong. All special characters(like íášc) are broken and that's causing inserting wrong characters into my DB. Encoding of that file is UTF-8, also UTF-8 is set on the XSQL page on our intranet. So I really don't know where could be a problem. And also any advices regarding to my script are welcomed, I am total newbie in Linux scripting:-)

  Recently our web-server crashed and we had to recover everything from a backup which took the whole day(totally unacceptable in our business). So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future? Our main server is on Amazon with Windows 2008/IIS + Postgresql 9.1. I was thinking on creating the same server on a different location as a complete mirror with the database replication. But I'm not sure how to implement IIS instance mirroring over the internet... So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future?

• Using GlusterFS for simple replication

  Hi, newbie question. I need to build this: /shared folder ~500GB of files, ~1MB each one. Two boxes (server1 and server2) connected by a 1Gbs LAN Every box needs to get r/w access to the files, so their are both clients I want that the files replicated on both boxes, every time a file is written in one server the same file should be present in the other one. My questions regarding GlusterFS: It'll duplicate the files on the same box?. For example the files are on /shared and the mount in /mnt/shared. It'll take 1GB space on every server? Instead, should I use the filesystem directly, locally writing on /shared? Does the replication work in this way without mountin a client? Also, if anyone know any other way to acomplish this setup I'll be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

  I am hosting a mysql server in a debian 6.0.4 server hosted in linode, the new data is frequently written into the mysql server using R, about 30-40 "write" per minute, about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Recently I found that the mysql server seem to down frequently, always give me error that mysql server cannot be connected through socket. I wonder if this is caused by my high demand to my mysql server, and if this can be solved. I am definitely a newbie in manage server.   I kind of screwed up the Apache "stuff" on my Mac. Usually when I visit http://localhost/, I would see the "It Works!" but now it just lists the directory and files inside /Library/WebServer/Documents. When I try to stop/start/restart the server with sudo apachectl stop, I get: httpd: Syntax error on line 68 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so, 10): Symbol not found: _apr_file_info_get$INODE64\n Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so\n Expected in: flat namespace\n in /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so I don't want to do the MacPorts install, I tried it earlier but... I just want to do it via source code with the usual ./configure, make, make install. Any ideas on how to get this working? Is there a way to totally remove Apache and then reinstall a fresh version?   A few newbie OSX questions: Despite the fact that most applications can be installed by dragging them to the Applications directory, some software still requires the creation of a separate program folder. Where should I put this folder? Does it matter? Is the Applications directory special somehow, or is it just a convenient folder with a custom icon? If I move one of these program folders later on, will the program still work? Will shortcuts to files in the folder break? Is there something similar to a registry in OSX? Thanks!

  I am a linux newbie so excuse me if I ask silly things. I recently find out that if I edit GRUB before booting and I add rw init=/bin/bash I end up with a root shell. Being in a condition that I want to understand everything I would like to know why this happens. I mean is it a bug? is it a feature? is it there to help admins to fix things as it only works if you have physical access to a computer? Which part are we exploiting? GRUB or the actual kernel?   I am newbie with Apache's mod_rewrite and I'm having some difficulties getting it to do what I want. In my static directory, I have some javascript files (.js) with 2 kind of filename: xxxx.js which is the standard file name AT_xxxx.js (with prefixed filename) which has been duplicated from previous standard file name but also contains my customizations I would like to parse requests for each standard requested javascript file (xxxx.js) to check if a customized file exists (AT_xxxx.js) including all sub-directories. Then, in this case, use the custom file instead of the standard file (perhaps by internal redirect). I tried to figure this out for hours but something is still wrong. Note: Also, I don't know how to find custom files in sub-directories.   Background I have a broadband connection. The fiber optic cable running from outside to my building is connected to a converter unit. The output of the converter is connected to a router. The router also provides 8 LAN ports to which the computers are connected. Shortly speaking, all computers are interconnected in a workgroup as opposed to a domain. My computer hosts an IIS web server using a private or local domain name www.mydomain.local. I has added 127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.local to the hosts file in the server C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc so I can browse the site from within the server. So far so good. How to make other computers connected to my workgroup able to browse my web server via my private local domain www.mydomain.local? Note: Again, I am a newbie. I have no idea what I should do next.

• Website requests not reaching IIS?

  To start off with a confession, I am not a server admin - just a developer tasked with getting to the root of a problem. Please be gentle! I have an intranet ASP.NET website running in IIS on a virtual machine. The website is not accessed very often (the last IIS log file was modified nearly six months ago). Both the IP address and Host header value are now failing to return the website, and the IIS log still doesn't show any more recent activity. The virtual machine was moved to a different physical location a few months ago, and the IP address for it has changed. Could this be what has broken access to the site? What else should I be checking to solve this? I don't have totally unrestricted access to the building's network settings, structures, etc. I would be grateful for any advice, even if I can't use it myself it'll improve my knowledge of what's going on behind the scenes!

  Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver). • Audio input problem in Ubuntu 9.10

  My audio input is a mix of my mic output and my sound card output. I'd like it to be just my mic output. I was able to do so in Ubuntu 9.04 but the interface is 9.10 is totally changed and I tried every my creativity was able to think. It's really annoying when talking to other people over the internet because they keep hearing their voice back. I'm not sure I explained it in clear way so I'll give you an example: What I do: I put an mp3 on play or a video on youtube then open a recorder and start to talk on my mic. What happens: both my voice and audio from mp3/youtube get reordered, even if I put headphones volume to 0 (via hardware). What I'd like to happen: Only my voice should be recorded. I'm sure I'm missing some technical term, but that's the problem and I'd like to solve it in Ubuntu 9.10, any idea?

• Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a WindowsXP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try. This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas? Thanks
