• Windows 7 safe mode pretends it's Windows XP?

  Just a question in between. A friend of mine brought me a laptop that does not work anymore and wanted me to check whether I can do something. She told me it's Windows 7, and startup screen and login screen look like it. However, as she gets a bluescreen on startup it is only possible to boot in safe mode where the system pretends to be Windows XP SP3. The system also may have 1 GB of RAM but the system itself states that it has 954 MB of RAM which is a value I've never seen before. Is everything corrupt from operating system to hardware, or am I just a newbie that does not know that Windows 7 pretends to be Windows XP SP3 in safe mode? Or is this laptop just the victim of an illegal, crazy copy of Windows XP sold as Windows 7? Maybe some strange Chinese stuff? I also recognized that the startup screen of Outlook Express reads "Outllok Express" (no typo) I´m kind of confused, maybe someone could put light into this ;)

• Encrypt connection between apache web server and mysql server.

  I'm setting up a local webapp. I have a CentOS-5 box that will be the webserver (Apache 2.2). I have another box (RHEL5) that will be used only for MySQL. The data will be encrypted on the webserver via PHP before being sent to the MySQL box and inserted into the db. All web-based connections to the webserver will be encrypted via SSL. From the research I've done, it's not totally clear on whether or not there is a need to encrypt the connection to the db from webserver (NB paranoia level: Orange). If it is not overkill, or even if it is (unless it is a really bad idea for some reason), any advice or pointers on the direction to take to get this done would be appreciated.

• ASP.NET High CPU Bringing Servers to their Knees

  Ok, our new build is having 100% cpu spikes on each server at random intervals. For long durations it make the site totally unresponsive - this will be at peak times as people in different countries log on to the site etc. We've looked at perfmom, memory profilers, CLR profiler, sql profilers, Red gate ants profiler, tried load testing in UAT - but cannot even reproduce the problem. This could mean only thousands of users hitting the live site causes it to happen. One pattern we did notice was that the new code - the broken build - actually uses noticably less threads. We are also using spring for IOC - does this have a bed reputation? To make things worse, we cannot deploy to live due to the business impact - so cannot narrow the problem down to subset of the new features we've added. We truly are destroyed - has anyone got any battle scars that may save us a few lives?

• Facebook unresponsive in Chrome, pepper flash disabled

  Facebook becomes unresponsive after a second or two when I open Chrome. This problem happens every few weeks or so, and it's incredibly annoying. I've disabled Chrome's internal pepper flash: http://imgur.com/8hlqvaX I've also tried disabling all extensions, and even tried it in incognito mode. Facebook works just fine in Firefox, but it's totally unusable in Chrome. The problem goes away eventually, but it returns every now and then and it's super annoying. Chrome version: 30.0.1599.101 (Official Build 227552) m How can I fix this?

• Robocopy hiding folders on backup drives

  I have a backup batch file that uses Robocopy to backup my files: robocopy "C:\" "G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C" /XF Pagefile.sys /XD "System Volume Information" "Recycler" "Temporary Internet Files" "Installer Cache" "Temp" /E /R:1 /W:0 /TEE /XJ This should create a folder structure on the external backup drive like so: G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C\... However, G: appears totally empty. What is weird, is that the folders and files are there! If I type the above path into the address bar, I see all the files and folders! Can anyone help me work out why? I think it might be some NTFS-based ownership/permissions thing but I'm not sure.

• Monit can't detect MySQL, but I can

  Monit is configured to watch MySQL on localhost at port 3306. check process mysqld with pidfile /var/lib/mysql/li175-241.pid start program = "/etc/init.d/mysql start" stop program = "/etc/init.d/mysql stop" if failed port 3306 protocol mysql then restart if 5 restarts within 5 cycles then timeout My application, which is configured to connect to MySQL via localhost:3306, is running just fine and can access the database. I can even use MySQL Query Browser to connect to the database remotely via port 3306. The port is totally open and possible to connect to. Therefore, I'm pretty darn certain that it's running. However, running monit -v reveals that Monit cannot detect MySQL on that port. 'mysqld' failed, cannot open a connection to INET[localhost:3306] via TCP This happens consistently, until Monit decides not to track MySQL anymore, as configured. How can I begin to troubleshoot this issue?

• Computer froze up

  Why would my computer freeze up out of the blue? I have Apache Webserver w/php, and MySQL server installed. I am not sure exactly when it happened, but I was doing something on a wordpress site that I have installed, and it just waited and waited and waited. Then, all the folders on it that were open on my other computer closed, as though I had disconnected it. Then the skype account went offline. The computer was totally froze. I thought maybe it was someone on logmein, but disconnecting it from the network didn't do anything. I had to "crash" it (held in the power button till it shutdown). It started up normally then and the logs showed absolutely nothing wrong. And doing the same thing that I did when it froze didn't repeat the freeze. Any ideas, I never had this happen before.

• Convert video files for Maemo (Nokia N900) using ffmpeg/mencoder

  I'm a newbie in video encoding so I'm looking for some expert advice. I'm looking to transcode media files with ffmpeg or mencoder (or something other) on Ubuntu for my Nokia N900 running Maemo. I'd prefer mencoder, because of ffmpeg's crazy dependencies. Video output should be AVC/H.264 (probably hardware accelerated on device). Audio output in AAC (should have preferred Vorbis but not supported natively and requires .mkv which is also not completely supported). Output video should retain the original aspect ratio. Resolution of screen is 800x480 (16:10). (Explanation of why-this-value-is-chosen would be really appreciated). Thanks.

• I am transferring a namserver domain what do I need to update?

  Perhaps I am totally over thinking this but I have a domain name and name servers that are working just fine. I want to transfer the one domain name that I have for my server which is also the name of the nameserver. e.g. mydomain.com with nameservers ns1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com I am transfering the mydomain.com from the current registrar to the one I use for all my other domains. The question is what do I have to update? Once the transfer is complete mydomain.com will have ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com as it's nameservers as it is today. I was wondering though how ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com are resolving if mydomain.com is pointing to ns1 and ns2. Am I over thinking this or am I missing something in the process here? I always just enter the nameserver names when I configure any domains on my server. Do I have to setup A records somewhere for ns1 and ns2 ?

• First requests are painfully slow

  I am running Redmine under IIS using Zoo. Installation was done using the Web Platform Installer and the default configuration has not been touched. However, when using the application, the first requests take very long to complete (sometimes more than one minute). During that time, the ruby.exe causes some CPU load (about 15%). According to the log files, it's mainly the views taking that long to render: Started GET "/redmine/login" for IP at 2012-09-04 09:54:08 +0200 Processing by AccountController#login as HTML Rendered account/login.html.erb within layouts/base (42150.5ms) Completed 200 OK in 43508ms (Views: 43008.5ms | ActiveRecord: 0.0ms) Rendered account/login.html.erb within layouts/base (42435.1ms) Completed 200 OK in 44100ms (Views: 43523.3ms | ActiveRecord: 0.0ms) After the initial delay, further request times are totally acceptable. Any ideas on how to speed up the warmup time?

This is the requirement for the request: Look for Incoming Mail addressed to #CRITICAL (mutlipurpose, internal group containing a list of engineers) For mail matching Point 1, append "For Immediate Action: " to the front of the Subject Some restrictions I have: Only the Domino server is under my charge, not to touch on network-side or other servers No 3rd party software to be installed I have gone through the configurations in the Domino server and the closest thing I have to filtering Email is the Router/SMTP Restrictions... Rules. But this is not able to fulfill Point 2 in any way. Is this even possible using just Domino server settings, or through agents?

• Install latest kernel to Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel

  I have an installed Ubuntu Distro (Karmic 9.10) already. However, due to some problems with xorg ati driver, I cannot standby my computer. Some guy have suggested me to try the latest version of xorg driver which in turn requires a newer version of Linux kernel than the newest release available from Ubuntu Central Repository (2.6.33). I have searched though several articles on how to install a custom Linux kernel. However, these articles are so 2004/2005 and they were talking about lilo (???). Since then, I'm afraid that I cannot make the Grub Boot recognize the new Linux kernel properly (I'm just a newbie to Linux). I would love to know how to install the kernel into Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel.

• Questions about Domains and DNS

  Hi, I am totally new to the DNS and server hosting world and not quite sure what I need. I want to get a domain, forward it to my own server, so that the user sees example.com in the url bar and example.com/foo/bar will work. Depending on what subdomain it is, it should do different things (another base-directory at webserver, ftp, etc). Also my email should be able to be sent to and received by that server. What irritates me, is the fact, that in the A-record I can only list IP-addresses and no ports. So do I have to set up a nameserver on my own server? Or do I accomplish this via vhosts on my webserver? I would appreciate any help or link to a tutorial. I know how DNS works, know some basic apache-stuff, etc... so no need to explain that. Thanks

• install grub on pendrive containing linux installation, making it system independent

  i have a win7 system and i want to install debian 6 on usb flash drive. the problem is grub loader. i want to install the grub loader on usb itself, so i can just plug in the pendrive in any computer and boot to deb6. so in effect making the flash drive an independent system. i tried it earlier, but ended up with grub loader needing me to insert the pendrive every time to give me boot options to even boot the win7 system, even though it was on primary hdd. so is there a way to turn the pendrive into full linux system with own boot loader, which can automatically detect os in the system i plug it in and be able to boot any of them. totally, self sufficient and system independent; making the pen drive so that it only needs a host system to run the os it carries. thank you, waiting for replies.

• Hyper-V management remotely

  I'll tell you in advance that I'm newbie in the topic. I have a Win8 (Home) machine with Hyper-V installed behind a router. The router has a public IP and a domain attached. I have another Win8 (Work) machine also installed Hyper-V. I want to access to my home Hyper-V via Hyper-V Manager so I can manage my virtual machines from work. I found this article but I don't know if it's applicable to me. I thought that a simple port forwarding should work and I only need to do is grant the Work HV manager my domain and the port I choose and if it's pop a login form I only need to fill the user data of my Home computer? How can I solve this? My thoughts revolve around: - Port forwarding - set domain+port and set my home user - Set up a VPN and use the local ip address of my home computer (it looks like a little cumbersome and my router only support PPTP) I'm open to any other solution too. • Custom one-key keyboard shortcuts in Outlook 2010?

  I'm a gmail junkie, and one of my favorite features is the keyboard shortcut "a" inside an email to archive the message. I can't remember if that was the default or if I set it to such a quick little keypress, but by now it's totally ingrained in my memory. I'm setting up Outlook 2010 for work, and set up a similar "quick step" to archive, mark as read, and mark as complete any email. It would be great, except for keyboard shortcuts they only give the option for "CTRL + SHIFT + 1" and other number key options. With a keyboard shortcut that convoluted, I'm not going to remember it and might as well just reach for my mouse. Is there any way to set custom keyboard shortcuts for Outlook 2010? I want one-key shortcuts, not 3-keys-at-once!

• Migrating from MyISAM to XtraDB

  Just a few questions that I just can't find anywhere about migrating to XtraDB. My group has been using MyISAM dbs for production and was wondering how hard is it to migrate to Percona's XtraDB and how would you go about doing so? Would I have to migrate MyISAM to InnoDB first or can I go straight to XtraDB? I installed Percona Server with XtraDB package on my Fedora machine but the documentation isn't very helpful as to how to use it so I was wondering does Percona just piggyback on a standard MySQL installation or is it a separate entity? • Putty freezes at random when logging into a remote machine in another continent

  I have to ssh to a remote machine in Europe from Asia every day for my work. But Putty freezes sometimes at totally random times and I have no choice but to close and re-open a new ssh session. It's frustrating especially when I'm editing something or executing a long running program. I know the question really doesn't have much details ('cause nothing seems to be wrong with the network at all). Has anyone experienced this sort of issue with Putty and had resolved it? • ESXi 4.0u1 - backup/copy options

  I have a machine built using ESXi 4.0u1 and it has 3 hard drives. I have my hosts built on different hard drives but wondering about backup options. I do not have RAID but I have 3 drives and 1 is totally empty. I had been using it to store ISOs for loading. So what options do I have to either create a 1 time copy onto the spare drive or some sort of snapshot to the spare drive? - There must be some way to do this either via the vsphere client or ssh into the ESXi box and go from there. Witch now have resulted in the server being totally trashed, there are so many different kinds of the same program install that anything doesn’t work. And don't get me started on the users and groups :D Well at last I have been given the responsibility to administrate our development server. But I would like to start from scratch, instead of trying to find every single package and config the previous admin have **ed up. • What can I do to enhance MacBook Pro internal mic sound quality in iMovie?

  After using MacBook for two years, I bought 17'' MacBook Pro. I'm pretty happy with it, performance and all, but I also was going to record some music videos for YouTube. I play guitar and sing. However I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality that comes by default. I'm 100% sure my 13'' MacBook mic was much better at recording music and singing. Currently mic can't event handle acoustic guitar, outputting sound you'd think was recorded 5 years ago in ARM format on a Nokia phone on a loud concert. It totally feels like some lame filter is cutting low and high frequencies. I want to know what settings (visible or hidden) in iMovie or Mac OS itself I might want to tweak in order to get my MBP mic record clean sound.

• Laptop Backup Software (Corporate)?

  I wondered if any of you who have a fleet of laptops are using anything to back them up, and if so what? In particular I'm looking for a solution that is totally hands-off once installed i.e. the user doesn't have to do anything, press anything, remember to change something when their domain password changes etc. Right now we use Druva Insync which I have to say is pretty damned good, however our license is up for renewal in a couple of months so I want to be sure it's the best solution before renewing - the only other vaguely comparable product that I know of is from Atempo but the cost of a SQL Server license is a big problem there. When running 2nd pass , the CPU seems to be at 98% usage, but first pass run totally ignores "-threads" option. Using libx264 . Here is my preset: flags=+loop+mv4 cmp=256 partitions=+parti4x4+parti8x8+partp4x4+partp8x8+partb8x8 me_method=hex subq=7 trellis=1 refs=5 bf=3 flags2=+bpyramid+wpred+mixed_refs+dct8x8 coder=1 me_range=16 g=250 keyint_min=25 sc_threshold=40 i_qfactor=0.71 qmin=10 qmax=51 qdiff=4 Is there any reason why the 1st pass is not utilizing my CPUs ?
