• How to ssh to my dorm computer with shared public IP and no admin rights over the router?

  First of all, I am not a Linux or ssh newbie. I have searched for this problem on many forums extensively but nobody seemed to have discussed this. Please help me! I live in a student dorm (off-campus) and all students of the dorm share the same WAN IP (Internet or public IP), which is fortunately static. I am not an admin and have no control over the router that assigns private IP's to all of the students, so I can't really forward port 22 to my computer :( Is it still possible to establish an ssh connection to my dorm computer from a computer on campus?

• Ganglia divide colors by rolles

  Sorry for a silly question I am still newbie to Ganglia. In Ganglia I control few important metrics for mysql (seconds behind master and etc.). In addition I have few bunches of mysql servers (every bunch has it's own tasks, but all of the bunches should be tested for seconds behind master). I am interested if this possible to show all metrics on the one page with different colors to different bunches. Right now in metric "seconds behind master" I see all mysql servers with metric "seconds behind master" with colors to different states (red is critical, gray is ok). Can I set a color to a graph according to it's bunch? Thanks!

• Boot to VHD backup plan

  I have a machine that I just reinstalled Windows and all of my applications onto... what a chore that is. I want to totally and completely avoid this from now on by creating an image. My first thought was to see if it possible to copy a VHD file when you are booted into it since I am using Windows 7 Ultimate as boot-to-vhd (without a parent machine). Is this possible and if so, how could I accomplish this? Keep in mind, this is my personal machine and I'm trying to keep things inexpensive (a good script would work). Thanks, Josh

• Can someone explain the physical architecture of RAID 10 in complete layman's terms?

  I am a newbie in the world of storage and I am having a hard time digesting the physical architecture of some of the RAID levels. I am particularly interested in RAID 10, and 50. I asked the question specifically about RAID 10, because I feel if I understand that, I'll understand the other. So, I get the definition of RAID 10 - "minimum 4 disks, a striped array whose segments are mirrored". If I've got 4 disks and Disks 1 and 2 are a mirrored pair, and Disks 3 and 4 are a mirrored pair - where does the data get striped? Thanks.

• What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

• How can I access an Apple Xserve with no I/O ports

  I have an Apple Xserve at my place of employment, that I stumbled across one day going through some old equipment. The Xserve has one card installed on it, being the NIC, and is labelled with the static IP adresses that it has assigned, but other than that it is totally 'headless'. I would like to put it to use ( by either rolling it over to a Linux, or Windows Server 08 environment... 0_o ) but have yet to figure out how to get into the system to manage it. I'm a frequent at StackOverflow, but this is my first SuperUser post, so please let me know if this should be on one of the affiliate sites.

• Moving a window from a disconnected monitor to connected monitor on Vista

  I have a laptop that runs Vista Mega Ultimate Amazing for Business 64-bit. When at work, I connect a monitor via USB (which totally rocks) to the "left" of the laptop monitor. It's identified as monitor 3. At home, I use an old CRT monitor that sits to the right of the laptop monitor. It's monitor 2. Monitor 1 is, of course, the inbuilt laptop monitor. Now at home I open a window, any window, on monitor 2. Then I come to work and plug in monitor 3. Anything I had open on monitor 2 is now stuck in unretrievable land. (Actually, it's probably anything that was minimised when I left home that belonged on monitor 2 will expand back onto monitor 2, even though it's disconnected) How can I get those windows back onto connected monitors?

• Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

  First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

• How to Restart Windows Update Service in Windows 7?

  I'm running into an issue with Windows Update on Windows 7 Professional. I am totally up to date in Windows Updates as of last week, but discovered this issue [today] during my Sunday morning PC maintenance ritual. In CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM & SECURITY - Windows Update, when I select "Check for Updates", I get a pop-up stating: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I've re-started several times, checked that the service hadn't been disabled at start up, and I've googled extensively on the topic - but have come up with nothing. I know there must be some way to start the service from the cmd line, and I would like to know how to get the service to start at boot. Please let me know if I have left any details out that may aid in formulating a response. Any of the community's excellent insights would be greatly appreciated!

• Reverse proxy using hop and RDP

  I am trying to connect from Vista to XP using RDP via reverse proxy using putty and an intermidiate host. There are myriad articles on the internet how to do it using vnc, ssh servers, winsshd, etc, but I can't find anything that helps me in this specific case. What I have: Windows XP host behind the firewall - 'destination' linux host running ssh on the internet - 'intermediate' windows host behind the firewall - 'source' All I want to do is open reverse tunnel from destination to intermidiate and use this tunnel for connecting back from the source. That should be simple to setup, however I just cannot make it. This is what I do: On 'destination', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate' using following settings: source port 3389, destination is 'source:33389', direction is local On 'source', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate'using following settings: source port 33389, destination is 'destination:33389', direction is local Finally, on source, open termnal services client and connect it to localhost:33389.Unfortunately it seems like packets do go somewhere but eventually client times out. Am I totally misunderstanding the concept? Please help!

• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router?   Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• Queue'ing cron jobs up to 10 times

  Hi All, This kind of touches on another post I made but is different so I have posted it as a new question. I have a script that runs that may take just over 1 minute to process, and my cron is set to run every minute. I can stop another cron job executing the script if the first one hasn't finished by using flock (php) in the file, however, this means that I would lose one iteration of the routine and have to wait nearly a minute before it is triggered again (as my understanding leads me to believe). What I would like to do is if the script is locked, not bomb out, but wait. Over time however, this could get quite high so I would also like to limit the amount of queued cron's to 10. I am a real newbie with Linux (had a Linux VPS for 3 days now) so I am not sure if my solution is even practical. Thanks.

• Un-balanced network speed although using fiberoptic cable line

  I'm not sure this is a right place to ask this question, but there's a strange thing that I don't quite sure what the reason is. My company has hired a fiberoptic cable line for network use (Wifi and cable through a router). But the strange thing is that, whenever someone view YouTube or listen stream music, then network speed for all the others become extremely slow. The download speed for that person is about 4-5 MB/s (or more), but others suffer. I'm still a newbie about networking. But I know there should be a solution. Could anyone tell me a way to stop this bad behavior? It's not possible for asking people not viewing YouTube, since that's part of their jobs. Any insights about this problem would be very welcome.

• Shielded ethernet cable and ethernet sockets earthing how to?

  Hi I'm going to install 5 Ethernet sockets in my house using cat5e shielded cable. I decided to use this because the sockets will be on the second floor and the most practical way up is within a trunk along with some mains wiring. The cable will be terminated at the router and at the Ethernet faceplate. What can I use to earth then? The faceplate/router are both plastic hence no earth wire needed. I can't use the earth wire within the main socket can I? I figured it will be very very dangerous. I don't want to be connecting to the earth block on the mains either since I totally incompetent when it comes to mains electricity.

• Gnome Terminal intercepts ctrl-F1

  Gnome Terminal does not pass on to applications the keypress ctrl-F1. It's an official bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/932940 The bug is marked Feb. 2012 but lives on in serendipity since 2009. The bug report is not even complete since shift-ctrl-F1 is also affected. However, I noticed that those two keys are the default keys for switch-to-workspace-1 and move-to-workspace-1. So I disabled them. Zero, zippo, zilch: Gnome Terminal would still swallow the keys. Next, I assigned to those two workspace functions totally different keys. The new keybindings did work, Gnome Terminal would still swallow ctrl-F1 and shift-ctrl-F1. Where are the default workspace keybindings stored? [Not in a xml-file.]

• Uninstalled Ubuntu, no GRLDR?

  So I'm a big fat idiot. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my school's laptop, and here's come the time that I have to turn it back in. I wrote GRUB to the Master Boot Record, thinking it wasn't going to be permanent. So, fast forward to yesterday. I decided to hell with this, and popped in my Windows 7 CD, deleted the whole partition, formatted to NTFS, and installed Windows 7 on it. I'm surfing the web and my computer overheats [totally typical] I boot up, and get this: Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No GRLDR Try (hd0,1): invalid or null Try (hd0,2): invalid or null Try (hd0,3): invalid or null Try (hd1,0): NTFS5: No grldr Try (hd1,1): invalid or null Try (hd1,2): invalid or null Try (hd1,3): invalid or null Cannot find GRLDR. Press space bar to hold the screen, any other key to boot previous MBR... Timeout: 5 The timeout part just counts down to 0 from 5. I need to turn in this thing before tomorrow, please please please can someone help me out?

• Troubleshooting mailserver (Postfix, Dovecot) on Ubuntu Server 9.10?

  I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

  I am currently a high level consumer break/fix technician responsible for about 300-400 repairs a month. I am good at my job, but bored, and I want to move into the enterprise side of my company, dealing with Server 2008 R2 and exchange and switches and routers that cost more than I make in a month. How do I make this transition? Whats the best thing to learn first? Is there a standard trajectory for making this leap from consumer to business? I am full time employed, so going back to school is not a great option, but I have no life, so spending my nights and weekends reading and practicing is totally within my realm. I am basically overwhelmed by the number of things to learn, and looking for any advice you may have on the best way to proceed. PS - I apologize if this is a not quite the right forum for this, I know its not a technical question exactly, but I also know the sorts of people I want to answer this question are reading this website.

• How does one delete a directory filled with files and other subdirectory permanently, bypassing the trash, from the command line in OS X?

  So my command line skills are a little rusty and I'm having trouble remembering the differences between the meanings of flags in different distro's os's. I also don't really remember all my technical lingo so manpages seem really unclear. Basically I'm on Mac OS X and want to delete a directory along with all of its contents. What I'm mainly concerned about, I suppose, is that it'll delete literally ALL of the references within the directory, including ../ and ../<everything else, including ../'s own ../> and then just totally screw up my entire system.   I found a guide for setting up a bridge in Fedora and was trying this: $ nmcli connection delete p33p1 $ nmcli connection add con-name br0 type bridge ifname br0 autoconnect yes $ nmcli connection add con-name p33p1 type bridge-slave ifname p33p1 master br0 autoconnect yes I found that $ nmcli con delete uuid [uuid here] accomplished the first step. nmcli connection does not have an 'add' action in this distribution. Please help me do the 2nd and 3rd steps. Context: I am trying to set up a virtual machine. I believe this is a necessary step for the VM to access my network and the internet. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong! BTW, I am a linux newbie, tech oldie. Thank you.

• How to get cluster information remotely via Powershell?

  I've been trying to find a good way to gather various pieces of a windows cluster setup remotely, preferably via WMI, as we are not yet at a point where Powershell remoting is implemented (and I know this problem goes away with that). I know I can use the following to get the current node: Get-WmiObject Win32_ComputerSystem -ComputerName RemoteServer1 | Select Name I also need the name property of Get-Cluster, which I can't figure out how to get from a remote system. Is there something out there, or should I wait it out until Remoting gets implemented? I'm a newbie to all things clustering, just a dba looking to inventory our servers properly. • ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

  Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!! • Which CMS for a mobile app? No HTML, just XML or JSON

It is ok if the CMS can also manage HTML websites, but the priority is on the data transfer over a web service. Which is the best CMS to use here? • How can I create an AMI from an existing EC2 instance?

  (I suspect that this may already be answered somewhere, since it seems like it would be a common operation. But I can't find it, so...) I am a relative AWS newbie. I have inherited a running Amazon EC2 instance, with various items (Apache, MySQL, Sphinx, ...) installed on it and a bunch of configuration. I'd like to turn it into an AMI that I can spin up other instances from. I can't find any information on creating a custom AMI on Amazon's site - only the fact that you can, repeatedly referenced, as if to taunt me... I believe this is not an EBS-backed instance, just an "ordinary" one. I do not know what AMI it was originally created from. How would I create an AMI that I could use for spinning up other instances which will be identical except for the hostname?
