• How to fix the boot loader with an installation disk at hand

  Hi, I recently messed up my Master Boot Record and my system is not booting. I was dual booting Windows and Ubuntu. Both of them are not loading now. I don't care if I lose my windows, but I want my Ubuntu back!! How to get it (I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 LTS disk with me). I went through the install wizard but feared that I may loose my existing installation/setup. Thats why I came here to check what is the ideal procedure to only update the Boot record instead of a full installation.

• Learning Erlang vs learning node.js

  I see a lot of crap online about how Erlang kicks node.js' ass in just about every conceivable category. So I'd like to learn Erlang, and give it a shot, but here's the problem. I'm finding that I have a much harder time picking up Erlang than I did picking up node.js. With node.js, I could pick a relatively complex project, and in a day I had something working. With Erlang, I'm running into barriers, and not going nearly as quickly. So.. for those with more experience, is Erlang complicated to learn, or am I just missing something? Node.js might not be perfect, but I seem to be able to get things done with it.

• Installing PHP extensions on Linux

  Please bear with me; I'm a developer, not a server admin. My company wants to explore using Magento. They've handed me a pre-configured Linux server with apache and PHP installed, but when I try to run the Magento setup, it tells me that there are PHP extensions that need to be loaded. I can edit the php.ini file, but have no idea where to get the extensions or how to install them, and there's no one here who knows, either. Can anyone give me a hand? I need the PDO_MySQL, mcrypt, and GD extensions. I've searched and found sites that talk about downloading from the terminal and compiling code, but it's all way over my head. Is there an easy way to do this?

Moments ago, the Exchange engineering team signed off on the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. This milestone means the coding and testing phase of the project is complete and we are now focused on releasing the new Exchange via multiple distribution channels to our business customers. General availability is planned for the first quarter of 2013. We have a number of programs that provide business customers with early access so they can begin testing, piloting and adopting Exchange within their organizations: We will begin rolling out new capabilities to Office 365 Enterprise customers in our next service updates, starting in November through general availability. • How to represent a tree structure in NoSQL

  I'm new to NoSQL and have been playing around with a personal project on the MEAN stack (Mongo ExpressJs AngularJs NodeJs). I'm building a document editor of sorts that manages nodes of data. Each document is actually a tree. I have a CRUD api for documents, to create new trees and a CRUD api for nodes in a given document. Right now the documents are represented as a collection that holds everything, including nodes. The children parent relationship is done by ids. So the nodes are an map by id, and each node has references to what nodes are their children. I chose this "flat" approach because it is easier to get a node by id from a document. Being used to having a relation table between nodes and documents, a relation table between nodes and children nodes I find it a bit weird that I have to save the entire "nodes" map each time I update a node. Is there a better way to represent such a data type in NoSQL?

• Creating natural environments that can run on lower end computers in Unity3D/C#

  So, I'm starting work on a project soon that will require me to create realistic environments that can preferably run on PC's besides high quality ones. The goal is to get as real an environment as possible while still being easy(ish) to run. The only problem is I've NEVER done anything with 3D environments, making trees sway, grass move, lighting, etc. Can anyone give me any help? Perhaps describe how it's done? Link me to articles? • DNS Configuration when registrar and host are two different companies

  I'm a total noob when it comes to DNS configuration. My client bought a domain through one company and is hosting their site with another (a virtual dedicated server). I can't find anything on the web that explains one's way through this setup. Where do I start? Which nameservers do I use? Which company's zone files do I edit? Basically it boils down, for me that I don't understand which company takes the lead, and which piggybacks off their configuration. Thanks in advance for the help.

  I have setup some rules in which subdomains (my users) will default to where I have located the robots.txt, favicon.ico, and crossdomain.xml therefore if a user creates a site say testing.mywebsite.com and they don't make their own favicon.ico at testing.mywebsite.com/favicon.ico, then it will use the favicon.ico I have in /misc/favicon.ico This works perfect, but it doesn't work for the main website. If you attempt to go to mywebsite.com/favicon.ico it will check if "/" exists, in which it does. And then never redirects to /misc/favicon.ico How can I get it so both instances redirect to /misc/favicon.ico ? # Set all crossdomain (openpalace file) favorite icons and robots.txt doesnt exist on their # side, then redirect to site's just to have something to go on. • What is the best way to learn how to develop drivers?

  At some point in my career I would definitely like to get involved in some embedded programming. I was thinking that starting out with developing some drivers would be a good place to develop my abilities in the regard. I'm open to doing so on either windows or linux platform (eventually will want to probably attempt both). What tools would you recommend that I look into to get me started on this project? Any other resources that you have found to be helpful (i.e. books, websites, programs, etc)? Any advice/recommendations? Thanks!

  I see the term 'enterprise' being thrown around software developers and programmers a lot and used loosely it seems. en·ter·prise/'ent?r?priz/ Noun: A project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort. Initiative and resourcefulness. Can someone please clarify what this term actually encompasses? "At an enterprise level", "enterprise scale". There are even "enterprise editions" of things. What exactly does it mean? It obviously doesn't make sense judging by the above definition so more specifically to software what does one mean when using the word enterprise??? EDIT: To add a spin on this - how does this term then fit into phrases such as Enterprise Framework Model? What does data access and data context have to do with company-wide descriptions?

  I am working in Flash and a few things have been brought to my attention. The two questions I have on this are: What happens when it is unable to call that function every 1/60 of a second? Is this a way of processing events that need to be limited by time (ex: a ball which needs to travel to the right of the screen from the left in X seconds)? Or should it be done a different way?

• Release an upgraded iOS app with a different revenue model

  I am starting a new iOS project and initially plan release a simple free version to gather feedback. I don't intend to monetize or market this initial version. However, I believe "Version 2" of this app will be good enough to pay for. I would prefer to release Version 2 as an upgrade from Version 1 rather than release it as a separate app. This way I can reserve a name for the app. It will also be easier to keep everything in a single repository. Are there any downsides of this approach? It's my understanding that I can change the price of an app at any point in time, so it shouldn't be an issue transitioning to a paid app, should it?

• My Latest Hare-Brained Scheme

  I have not had a significant side project for a while but I have been working on a product idea. Its an analytics application that analyses twitter data and reports on market sentiment. The target market is companies who want to track trends in consumer sentiment. My idea is to teach the application to divide relevant tweets into ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ categories. If the input was the set of tweets featuring the word ‘telstra’ the application would find the following tweet:   and put it in the ‘negative’ category. Collecting data in this fashion facilitates the creation of graphs such as: which can then be correlated against events, such as a share offer or new product release. I may go ahead and build this, just because I am a programmer and it amuses me to do so. My concerns are: There  is no market for this tool There is a market, but I don’t understand it and have no way to reach it.

I decided to start with Python to solve the problems on Project Euler and was throughly impressed with the language. Since then I've went on to learn Django, and now use it primarily for my web applications. I would love to have a career programming in this language, however I fear the future of the language is currently in a state of uncertainness. With Google and other major companies embracing it there may be some hope, what are your thoughts on Python, do you see many job opportunities out there?

• Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

  A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used to have and I know that his current setup is significantly more powerful than my laptop. And then it turned out he is running Ubuntu off an external HDD hooked up via USB2.0. The HD enclosure is USB3.0 but apparently he can't manage to get it to boot on USB3.0 so he switched to one of the USB2.0 ports or whatever and that works, albeit not very well. Now I would expect USB to add some overhead to communication between the computer and the HDD; SATA is after all designed to get the maximum out of a hard drive, whereas USB is, well, universal. What are your expreriences with booting off external HDDs? Edit: Does anybody know just how much of a slowdown can be expected?

  Hello /* programmers */ (I usually hang in SO) I've been discussing a conceptual project with a friend of mine and the the most effective way we've seen of doing it is writing the engine in C++ while the logic would be done in Ruby. However, we would need data to be passed around often, for example: Engine reports that A happened, that gets triggered in a proc array (event "A" is passed but proc doesnt use it) Ruby decides that we need to wait for B to happen Ruby adds a proc to an array. The array of procs is iterated during each cycle in the C++ engine C++ engine reports that B happened and passes "event B (should be a ruby object) Ruby receives event B and decides what to do next I don't work with multiple languages often, and was wondering if it's possible to implement things in this way. I know that there's the ruby VALUE in C++, but would like to know the standard way of combining the two. (of course I know ruby follows the perl "more than 1 way to do it", but there's often a standardized way)

• Adventures in Scrum: Lesson 1 &ndash; The failed Sprint

  I recently had a conversation with a product owner that wanted to have the Scrum team broken up into smaller units so that less time was wasted on the Scrum Ceremonies! Their complaint was around the need in Scrum to have the entire “Team” (7+-2) involved in the sizing of the work during the “Sprint Planning Meeting”.  The standard flippant answer of all Scrum professionals, “Well that's not Scrum”, does not get you any brownie points in these situations. The response could be “Well we are not doing Scrum then” which in turn leads to “We are doing Scrum…But, we have split the scrum team into units of 2/3 so that they can concentrate on a specific area of work”. While this may work, it is not Scrum and should not be called so… It is just a form of Agile. Don’t get me wrong at this stage, there is nothing wrong with Agile, just don’t call it Scrum. The reason that the Product Owner wants to do this is that, in effect, through a number of miscommunications and failings in our implementation of Scrum, there was NO unit of potentially Shippable software at the end of the first sprint. It does not matter to them that most Scrum teams will fail the first Sprint, even those that are high performing teams. Remember it is the product owners their money! We should NOT break up scrum teams into smaller units for the purpose of having less people tied up in the Scrum Ceremonies. The amount of backlog the Team selects is solely up to the Team… Only the Team can assess what it can accomplish over the upcoming Sprint. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org The entire team must accept the work and in order to understand what they can accept they must be free to size it as a team. This both encourages common understanding and increases visibility on why team members think a task is of a particular size. This has the benefit of increasing the knowledge of the entire team in the problem domain. A new Team often first realizes that it will either sink or swim as a Team, not individually, in this meeting. The Team realizes that it must rely on itself. As it realizes this, it starts to self-organize to take on the characteristics and behaviour of a real Team. - Scrum Guide, Scrum.org This paragraph goes to the why of having the whole team at the meeting; The goal of Scrum it to produce a unit of potentially shippable software at the end of every Sprint. In order to achieve this we need high performing teams and this is what Scrum as a framework has been optimised to produce. I think that our Product Owner is understandably upset over loosing two weeks work and is losing sight the end goal of Scrum in the failures of the moment. As the man spending the money, I completely understand his perspective and I think that we should not have started Scrum on an internal project, but selected a customer  that is open to the ideas and complications of Scrum. So, what should we have NOT done on our first Scrum project: Should not have had 3 interns as the only on site resource – This lead to bad practices as the experienced guys were not there helping and correcting as they usually would. Should not have had the only experienced guys offsite – With both the experienced technical guys in completely different time zones it was difficult to get time for questions. Helping the guys on site was just plain impossible. Should not have used a part time ScrumMaster – Although the ScrumMaster attended all of the Ceremonies, because they are only in 2 full days of the week it makes it difficult for the team to raise impediments as they go. Should not have used a proxy product owner. – This was probably the worst decision that was made. Mainly because the proxy product owner did not have the same vision as the product owner. While Scrum does not explicitly reject the idea of a Proxy Product Owner, I do not think it works very well in practice. The “single wringable neck” needs to contain both the Money and the Vision as well as attending the required meetings. I will be brining all of these things up at the Sprint Retrospective and we will learn from our mistakes and move on. • Authentication issue with CUPS 5.3.1 on SMB Printer

  I am trying to print to a samba printer via CUPS. I have configured the printer allright, but there seems to be a problem with authentication. The error message I get is Session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE The GUI also tells me: Idle - Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) It used to work with previous versions of CUPS (1.4.3 and 1.4.6) under Ubuntu 11.04 I am doing this on a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, CUPS version 1.5.3. I have tried changing some rights relating to apparmor, with no success as described here: http://www.compdigitec.com/labs/2010/01/16/fixing-usrlibcupsbackendsmb-failed-error-in-ubuntu/ I have been working with Ubuntu for years - but this is the kind of problem I need help with.
