• MySQL Workbench 6.2.1 BETA has been released

  The MySQL Workbench team is announcing availability of the first beta release of its upcoming major product update, MySQL  Workbench 6.2. MySQL Workbench 6.2 focuses on support for innovations released in MySQL 5.6 and MySQL 5.7 DMR (Development Release) as well as MySQL Fabric 1.5, with features such as: A new spatial data viewer, allowing graphical views of result sets containing GEOMETRY data and taking advantage of the new GIS capabilities in MySQL 5.7. Support for new MySQL 5.7.4 SQL syntax and configuration options. Metadata Locks View shows the locks connections are blocked or waiting on. • Script / command to drop all connections / locks in Sybase SQL Anywhere 9?

  I've recently become responsible for administering an application which is essentially a front end to a Sybase SQL Anywhere 9 database, including the database itself. I'd like to use unload table to efficiently export the data for backup and, in the case of a few tables, ETL to get it into a reporting database / small scale data warehouse. The problem is that the client application crashes and leaves dead connections and shared locks on a pretty regular basis, which seems to prevent unload table from getting the (brief) exclusive locks it needs. Currently I use Sybase Central to verify that these connections are in fact zombies and drop them myself at the end of the day / week. Is there a command or script to drop all connections? Being able to drop everything at once after verifying that they're unneeded would be quite helpful but I haven't found a way to do it.

• How to either completely remove SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation or repair it?

  I've installed MSSQL server correctly, then I took some wrong turns and I'm now left in a pretty undesirable state. I wanted to change the server instance to another drive, so I uninstalled SQL server and all of it's features from the Programs and Features control panel. Now when I tried to install a new instance, I got a few errors, but it still installed most of them: Then I tried to run a repair, which I figured would fix things, but it throws an exception about not being able to read something from the CD (tried more than once always the same exception) Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file R:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\SSCERuntime_x86-enu.msi , and it fails to repair a few of the features: And I don't have the server instance installed either. So I'm left with no MSSQLMS, no server instance, and no happiness. What would be the best course of action here?

• SQL Server Management Studio Reports: Why no open transactions?

  On a server with several hundred user connections, when I open the SQL Server 2008 SP1 Management Studio report "Database - User Statistics", the result page shows the following results: Login Name: appUser Active Sessions: 243 Active Connections: 243 Open Transactions: 374 Still, when I open the report "Database - All Transactions" on the same DB, it doesn't show any connections ("Currently, there are no transactions running for [Database Name] Database"). What gives? Is this a bug in Management Studio? This is not the only report where this kind of behavious happens... Thanks all!

• Is it possible to backup an SQL Database hosted on an Azure VM, to our internal DPM2012?

  I've got an SQL database on an azure VM (non domain) that i'd like to backup to our internal DPM 2012 server. I've installed the DPM agent on the Azure VM, setup DCOM to use only the ports 5000 to 5025 on both the VM and the DPM server, created the 135, 5000-5025, 5718 5719 endpoints on azure and on the VM's firewall. When trying to add this agent to the DPM server, I end up with an error, "Unable to contact the protection Agent on server .cloudapp.net" I know there is some sort of connection between them, as using a wrong password gives me an Invalid Credentials error. The error seems to be DCOM related : When trying to connect to the Azure VM from the DPM server using VBEMTest, i get an Error "0x800706ba The RPC server is unavailable", but access is deneid when using wrong credentials ) What am i missing ? Has someone been able to achieve this kind of setup ? Thanks for your help !

• SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

• Why does Oracle SQL Developer take so long to open?

  I think anyone who's used Oracle SQL Developer will agree that it's painfully slow on the load. My research has lead me to a solution that seems to have helped a little, and that's telling OSQLD not to check for updates on startup. However, it still takes several minutes to open. What could OSQLD possibly be doing during load time? Is there any way get it to open right away? • In place SQL 2008 upgrade vs. Side by side?

  I have a SQL 2005 Std edition server with 5 databases in production, 4 db's are used by web-based apps the 5th is a desktop application. My question is should I perform an in-place upgrade or a side-by-side by creating an sql2008 instance on the same box? The machine is a VM on vmware and I'm planning on taking a snapshot before the upgrade and having a 'blackout' window during the upgrade so that I could roll back to the snapshot if things go really bad. Any previous experience and advice is appreciated.

  We have a web application project wich will be created using ASP.NET 4.0, Entity Framework, and SQL Sever 2008 R2. To meet the needs, suppose a normal page of this application that has a query which it takes 10 miliseconds to response on a Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz proccessor with 2x2GB of DDR3 Ram (EntityFramework overheads are considered). And we will have about 2000 concurrent user at peek times. So, what is the best recommended specifications (CPU/RAM/RAID/...) for the server which will be host this application? -- Or -- How can I calculate that?

  Im getting an error half way through an SQL Server 2008 r2 installation. The error states Not all privileges or groups referenced are assigned to the caller. it asks to retry or cancel. Upon trying both, the error message returns and I must cntrl-alt-delete to end the process. I have checked all permissions associated with local account, network domain account and ran installation as administrator. I have searched on the web and other people are having this problem too but I cant find a solution. so I turn to the experts, anyone encounter this error??

• Should Production Windows Web Servers (IIS & SQL) be in a domain?

  We have a few web servers and a few database servers. To date, they've been standalone machines that are not part of a domain. The web servers don't talk to each other, and the web servers talk to the database servers via SQL Auth. My concern with putting the machines in a domain together were added complexity - it's one more "thing" running, and doing "things" that could go wrong. risk - if a domain controller fails, am I now putting other machines at risk? However, in certain scenarios it does seem convenient for them to be on a domain, sharing credentials. For example, if I want to give the "services" control on one machine access to another machine (because Remote Desktop craps out) I need to go in and assign privileges on multiple machines - something that I believe Active Directory and Domain Accounts set to simplify. My question: I'm sure there are things I'm not considering here. Is there a best practice?

• Getting 400 Bad Request when requesting by server name on nginx/uwsgi

  I'm trying to run 2 different sites on nginx via different ports (they each have a load balancer that points to the appropriate port). The first site work perfectly. The second site... If I access http://localhost:81/ it works correctly If I access http://127.0.01:81/ it works correctly If I access the hostname http://THEHOSTNAME:81/ it fails with a 400 error If I access the public IP http://x.x.x.x:81/ it fails with a 400 error I've set the error_log to info, but the only lines I get in the log when this happens is: ==> /var/log/nginx/access.log <== 10.183.38.141 - - [24/Aug/2014:21:03:28 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 400 37 "-" "curl/7.36.0" "-" ==> /var/log/nginx/error.log <== 2014/08/24 21:03:28 [info] 7029#0: *5 client 10.183.38.141 closed keepalive connection In my uwsgi log, I only see this: [pid: 6870|app: 0|req: 87/92] 10.28.23.224 () {32 vars in 380 bytes} [Sun Aug 24 21:05:21 2014] GET / => generated 26 bytes in 1 msecs (HTTP/1.1 400) 2 headers in 82 bytes (1 switches on core 2) What should be my next step in debugging this?

I have heard of no one who does. What are you for? - perplexedly wondered aged and wise DBA. At least that DBA thought she was aged and wise though each day tried to prove to her that she wasn't. - I know you. You are quite lazy. Why would you do additional clicks to move from window to window? From Tool to tool ? This is irritating, isn't it? I can run windows system commands, sql statements and much more from the same script, from the same query window! - I have all my tools that I‘m used to, I have Management Studio, Cmd, Powershell. They can do anything for me. I don’t need additional tools. - I promise you, you will like me. – the thing continued to whine . - All right, show me. – she gave up. It’s always this way, she thought sadly, - easier to agree than to explain why you don’t want. - Enable me and then think about anything that you always couldn’t do through the management studio and had to use other tools. - Ok. Google for me the list of greatest features of SQL SERVER 2012. - Well... I’m not sure... Think about something else. - Ok, here is something easy for you. Well, aged and wise dba wasn’t thinking about the weirdness of the situation at that moment. - After enabling me, – said unfairly forgotten feature (it was thinking of itself in such manner) – after enabling me you can use all command line commands in the same management studio query window by adding two exclamation marks !! at the beginning of the script line to denote that you want to use cmd command: -Just keep in mind that when using this feature, you are actually running the commands ON YOUR computer and not on SQL server that query window is connected to. This is main difference from using xp_cmdshell which is executing commands on sql server itself. Bottomline, use UNC path instead of local path. - Look, there are much more than that. - The SQLCMD feature was getting exited.- You can get IP of your servers, create, rename and drop folders. You can see the contents of any file anywhere and even start different tools from the same query window: Not so aged and wise DBA was getting interested: - I also want to run different scripts on different servers without changing connection of the query window. - Sure, sure! Another great feature that CMDmode is providing us with and giving more power to querying. Use “:” to use additional features, like :connect that allows you to change connection: - Now imagine, you have one script where you have all your changes, like creating staging table on the DWH staging server, adding fact table to DWH itself and updating stored procedures in the server where reporting database is located. - Now, give me more challenges! - Script out a list of stored procedures into the text files. - You can do it easily by using command :out which will write the query results into the specified text file. The output can be the code of the stored procedure or any data. Actually this is the same as changing the query output into the file instead of the grid. - Now, take all of the scripts and run all of them, one by one, on the different server.  - Easily - Come on... I’m sure that you can not... -Why not? Naturally, I can do it using :r commant which is opening a script and executing it. Look, I can also use :setvar command to define an environment variable in SQLCMD mode. Just note that you have to leave the empty string between :r commands, otherwise it’s not working although I have no idea why. - Wow.- She was really impressed. - Ok, I’ll go to try all those… -Wait, wait! I know how to google the SQL SERVER features for you! This example will open chrome explorer with search results for the “SQL server 2012 top features” ( change the path to suit your PC): “Well, this can be probably useful stuff, maybe this feature is really unfairly forgotten”, thought the DBA while going through the dark empty parking lot to her lonely car. “As someone really wise once said: “It is what we think we know that keeps us from learning. Learn, unlearn and relearn”.

• REPLACENULL in SSIS 2012

  While preparing my slides e demos for the forthcoming SQL Server Conference 2012 in Italy, I’ve come across a nice addition to DTS Expression language which I never noticed before and that seems unknown also to the blogosphere: REPLACENULL. REPLACENULL is the same of ISNULL in T-SQL. It’s *very* useful especially when loading a fact table of your BI solution when you need to replace unexisting reference to dimension with dummy values. This is the brainchild of Jen McCown, who posted the second of these recently. I’m actually a bit late in responding, as I haven’t got it in my head to look for these posts yet. Still, Jen says I can still contribute now, hence this post. The theme this time is on Tech Giants. I could list people all day for those I admire in the SQL Server space, and go on even longer if I branch out to other areas. But I actually want to highlight four guys that I admire so much for their skills, integrity and general awesomeness that I hired them. Yes – the guys that work for me at LobsterPot Solutions, being Ben McNamara, David Gardiner, Roger Noble and Ashley Sewell. I admire them all, and they present the company with a platform on which to grow.

• 553-Message filtered - HELO Name issue?

  I am having major issues sending from my SBS2011 machine to Message labs server-13.tower-134.messagelabs.com #553-Message filtered. Refer to the Troubleshooting page at 553-http://www.symanteccloud.com/troubleshooting for more 553 information. (#5.7.1) ## I have changed the IP and hostnames from the below. I am not on any IP or domain blacklists. I have setup SPF (which includes mailchimp servers): v=spf1 mx a ip4:95.74.157.22/32 a:remote.mydomain.com include:servers.mcsv.net ~all I am sure i have setup my HELO names correctly under the Exchange Management console, sending a test email from the SBS server and looking at the header shows the following: X-Orig-To: [email protected] X-Originating-Ip: [95.74.157.22] Received: from [95.74.157.22] ([95.74.157.22:52194] helo=remote.mydomain.com) by smtp50.gate.ord1a.rsapps.net (envelope-from <[email protected]>) (ecelerity 2.2.3.49 r(42060/42061)) with ESMTP id 11/90-10010-E529C835; Mon, 02 Jun 2014 11:04:09 -0400 Received: from MYSBSSVR.mydomain.local ([fe80::3159:95a6:23f:1bef]) by MYSBSSVR.mydomain.local ([fe80::3159:95a6:23f:1bef%10]) with mapi id 14.01.0438.000; Mon, 2 Jun 2014 19:03:56 +0400 Is is the main helo name there OK and do i need to worry about the second Received block where the MYSBSVR.mydomain.local is mentioned? Anything else I can do to find out why i am being filtered?

  I have the following snippet of fail2ban configuration on Ubuntu 13.10 server: #jail.conf [apache-getphp] enabled = true port = http,https filter = apache-getphp action = iptables-multiport[name=apache-getphp, port="http,https", protocol=tcp] mail-whois[name=apache-getphp, dest=root] logpath = /srv/apache/log/access.log maxretry = 1 #filter.d/apache-getphp.conf [Definition] failregex = ^<HOST> - - (?:\[[^]]*\] )+\"(GET|POST) /(?i)(PMA|phptest|phpmyadmin|myadmin|mysql|mysqladmin|sqladmin|mypma|admin|xampp|mysqldb|mydb|db|pmadb|phpmyadmin1|phpmyadmin2|cgi-bin) ignoreregex = I know the regex is good, because if I run the test command on my access.log: fail2ban-regex /srv/apache/log/access.log /etc/fail2ban/filter.d/apache-getphp.conf I get a SUCCESS result with multiple hits, and in my log I see entries like 187.192.89.147 - - [13/Apr/2014:11:36:03 +0100] "GET /phpTest/zologize/axa.php HTTP/1.1" 301 585 "-" "-" 187.192.89.147 - - [13/Apr/2014:11:36:03 +0100] "GET /phpMyAdmin/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 301 593 "-" "-" Secondly I know email is configured correctly, as each time I service fail2ban restart I get an email for each of the filters stopping/starting. However despite all this no action seems to be taken when one of these requests comes in. No email with whois, and no entries in iptables. What possibly could be preventing fail2ban from taking action? (everything looks in order in fail2ban-client -d and I can see the chains have loaded with iptables -L)
