• Juju stuck in "pending" state when using LXC

  So I'm trying to get started with Juju, and tried to do this locally using LXC. I followed the instructions here: How do I configure juju for local usage? Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work for me. status shows the following: $ juju status machines: 0: agent-state: running dns-name: localhost instance-id: local instance-state: running services: mysql: charm: cs:precise/mysql-1 relations: db: - wordpress units: mysql/0: agent-state: pending machine: 0 public-address: null wordpress: charm: cs:precise/wordpress-0 exposed: true relations: db: - mysql units: wordpress/0: agent-state: pending machine: 0 open-ports: [] public-address: null 2012-05-10 14:09:38,155 INFO 'status' command finished successfully As you can see the agent-state is 'pending' and there is no public address where I'm able to access the newly created site. Am I missing something here? UPDATE: Tried destroying the environment an doing everything again (multiple times). • Unable to build my c++ code with g++ 4.6.3

  I am facing multiple issues with building my c++ code on Ubuntu 12.04. This code was building and running fine on RH Enterprise. I am using g++ 4.6.3. • Another sound not working post

  Tried all the other "sound not working" posts i think, lost count. purge/reinstall alsa and pulse, reboot, add user to audio group, various lines in the alsa config file such as "options snd-hda-intel model=" then tried different options like generic, auto, basic, default, etc. tried pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload a few times, with and without rebooting. • Logging WebSocket Frames using Chrome Developer Tools, Net-internals and Wireshark (TOTD #184)

  TOTD #183 explained how to build a WebSocket-driven application using GlassFish 4. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will explain how do view/debug on-the-wire messages, or frames as they are called in WebSocket parlance, over this upgraded connection. This blog will use the application built in TOTD #183. First of all, make sure you are using a browser that supports WebSocket. If you recall from TOTD #183 then WebSocket is combination of Protocol and JavaScript API. A browser supporting WebSocket, or not, means they understand your web pages with the WebSocket JavaScript. caniuse.com/websockets provide a current status of WebSocket support in different browsers. Most of the major browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari already support WebSocket for the past few versions. As of this writing, IE still does not support WebSocket however its planned for a future release. Viewing WebSocket farmes require special settings because all the communication happens over an upgraded HTTP connection over a single TCP connection. If you are building your application using Java, then there are two common ways to debug WebSocket messages today. Other language libraries provide different mechanisms to log the messages. Lets get started! Chrome Developer Tools provide information about the initial handshake only. This can be viewed in the Network tab and selecting the endpoint hosting the WebSocket endpoint. You can also click on "WebSockets" on the bottom-right to show only the WebSocket endpoints. Click on "Frames" in the right panel to view the actual frames being exchanged between the client and server. The frames are not refreshed when new messages are sent or received. You need to refresh the panel by clicking on the endpoint again. To see more detailed information about the WebSocket frames, you need to type "chrome://net-internals" in a new tab. Click on "Sockets" in the left navigation bar and then on "View live sockets" to see the page. Select the box with the address to your WebSocket endpoint and see some basic information about connection and bytes exchanged between the client and the endpoint. Clicking on the blue text "source dependency ..." shows more details about the handshake. If you are interested in viewing the exact payload of WebSocket messages then you need a network sniffer. These tools are used to snoop network traffic and provide a lot more details about the raw messages exchanged over the network. However because they provide lot more information so they need to be configured in order to view the relevant information. Wireshark (nee Ethereal) is a pretty standard tool for sniffing network traffic and will be used here. For this blog purpose, we'll assume that the WebSocket endpoint is hosted on the local machine. These tools do allow to sniff traffic across the network though. Wireshark is quite a comprehensive tool and we'll capture traffic on the loopback address. Start wireshark, select "loopback" and click on "Start". By default, all traffic information on the loopback address is displayed. That includes tons of TCP protocol messages, applications running on your local machines (like GlassFish or Dropbox on mine), and many others. Specify "http" as the filter in the top-left. Invoke the application built in TOTD #183 and click on "Say Hello" button once. • It’s the thought that counts…

  I recently finished editing a book called Tribal SQL, and it was a fantastic experience. It’s a community-sourced book written by first-timers. Fifteen previously unpublished authors contributed one chapter each, with the seemingly simple remit to write about “what makes them passionate about working with SQL Server, something that all SQL Server DBAs and developers really need to know”. Sure, some of the writing skills were a bit rusty as one would expect from busy people, but the ideas and energy were sheer nectar. Any seasoned editor can deal easily with the problem of fixing the output of untrained writers. We can handle with the occasional technical error too, which is why we have technical reviewers. The editor’s real job is to hone the clarity and flow of ideas, making the author’s knowledge and experience accessible to as many others as possible. What the writer needs to bring, on the other hand, is enthusiasm, attention to detail, common sense, and a sense of the person behind the writing. If any of these are missing, no editor can fix it. We can see these essential characteristics in many of the more seasoned and widely-published writers about SQL. To illustrate what I mean by enthusiasm, or passion, take a look at the work of Laerte Junior or Fabiano Amorim. Both authors have English as a second language, but their energy, enthusiasm, sheer immersion in a technology and thirst to know more, drives them, with a little editorial help, to produce articles of far more practical value than one can find in the “manuals”. There’s the attention to detail of the likes of Jonathan Kehayias, or Paul Randal. Read their work and one begins to understand the knowledge coupled with incredible rigor, the willingness to bend and test every piece of advice offered to make sure it’s correct, that marks out the very best technical writing. There’s the common sense of someone like Louis Davidson. All writers, including Louis, like to stretch the grey matter of their readers, but some of the most valuable writing is that which takes a complicated idea, or distils years of experience, and expresses it in a way that sounds like simple common sense. There’s personality and humor. Contrary to what you may have been told, they can and do mix well with technical writing, as long as they don’t become a distraction. Read someone like Rodney Landrum, or Phil Factor, for numerous examples of articles that teach hard technical lessons but also make you smile at least twice along the way. Writing well is not easy and it takes a certain bravery to expose your ideas and knowledge for dissection by others, but it doesn’t mean that writing should be the preserve only of those trained in the art, or best left to the MVPs. I believe that Tribal SQL is testament to the fact that if you have passion for what you do, and really know your topic then, with a little editorial help, you can write, and people will learn from what you have to say. You can read a sample chapter, by Mark Rasmussen, in this issue of Simple-Talk and I hope you’ll consider checking out the book (if you needed any further encouragement, it’s also for a good cause, Computers4Africa). • SQL 2005 Transaction Rollback Hung–unresolved deadlock

  Encountered an interesting issue recently with a SQL 2005 sp3 Enterprise Edition system. Every weekend, a full database reindex was being run on this system – normally this took around one and a half hours. Then, one weekend, the job ran for over 17 hours  - and had yet to complete... At this point, DBA cancelled the job. Job status is now cancelled – issue over…   However, cancelling the job had not killed the reindex transaction – DBCC OPENTRAN was still showing the transaction being open. The oldest open transaction in the database was now over 17 hours old.  Consequently, transaction log % used growing dramatically and locks still being held in the database... Further attempts to kill the transaction did nothing. ie we had a transaction which could not be killed. In sysprocesses, it was apparent the SPID was in rollback status, but the spid was not accumulating CPU or IO. Was the SPID stuck ? On examination of the SQL errorlog – shortly after the reindex had started, a whole bunch of deadlock output had been produced by trace flag 1222. Then this :- spid5s      ***Stack Dump being sent to   xxxxxxx\SQLDump0042.txt spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * spid5s      * BEGIN STACK DUMP: spid5s      *   12/05/10 01:04:47 spid 5 spid5s      * spid5s      * Unresolved deadlock spid5s      * spid5s      *   spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- spid5s      * Short Stack Dump spid5s      Stack Signature for the dump is 0x000001D7 spid5s      External dump process return code 0x20000001. Unresolved deadlock – don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these before…. A quick call to Microsoft support confirmed the following bug had been hit :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961479 So, only option to get rid of the hung spid – to restart SQL Server… Fortunately SQL Server restarted without any issues. I was pleasantly surprised to see that recovery on this particular database was fast. However, restarting SQL Server to fix an issue is not something I would normally rush to do... Short term fix – the reindex was changed to use MAXDOP of 1. Longer term fix will be to apply the correct CU, or wait for SQL 2005 sp 4 ?? This should be released any day soon I hope..

• No audio with headphones, but audio works with integrated speakers

  My speakers work correctly, but when I plug in my headphones, they don't work. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. My audio card is Realtek ALC259 My laptop model is a HP G62t a10em In another thread someone fixed a similar issue (headphones work, speakers not) folowing this: sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (or some other editor instead of Vi) Append the following at the end of the file: alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=auto Reboot but it doesnt work for me. I have reinstalled the following packages and rebooter: -alsa-hda-realtek-ignore-sku-dkms -alsa-modules-2.6.32-25-generic -alsa-source -alsa-utils -linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic -linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic-pae -linux-sound-base -(i think i listed them all) After rebooting, the audio worked, both in speakers and headphones. I have no idea which is the package that made my audio work, but it certainly was one of them. [/SOLUTION]

Here you can write any logic you can fetch it from the database or you can even fetch it from xml based on key passed. For the demo purpose I have written that hardcoded. So it will create a meta tag string and will return it. Now I am going to store that meta tag in ViewBag just like we have a title tag. In this post I am going to use standard template so we have our title tag there in viewbag message. Same way I am going save meta tag like following in ViewBag. public ActionResult Index() { ViewBag.Message = "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC!"; ViewBag.MetaTag = HomeMetaTags(); return View(); } Here in the above code you can see that I have stored MetaTag ViewBag. Now as I am using standard ASP.NET MVC3 template so we have our we have out head element in Shared folder _layout.cshtml file. So to render meta tag I have modified the Head tag part of _layout.cshtml like following. <head> <title>@ViewBag.Title</title> <link href="@Url.Content("~/Content/Site.css")" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="@Url.Content("~/Scripts/jquery-1.5.1.min.js")" type="text/javascript"></script> @Html.Raw(ViewBag.MetaTag) </head> Here in the above code you can see I have use @Html.Raw method to embed meta tag in _layout.cshtml page. This HTML.Raw method will embed output to head tag section without encoding html. As we have already taken care of html tag in string function we don’t need the html encoding. Now it’s time to run application in browser. Now once you run your application in browser and click on view source you will find meta tag for home page as following. • Wireless internet is connected to an open network but has no internet

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop yesterday and it connected to the wireless fine. Then I took it to school, put it on their wired connection, downloaded some stuff, and now the wireless doesn't work. At first it would detect networks, but not connect. I restarted it and now it can connect, but it acts like it doesn't have internet in the browser. Wired connection still works fine on it. I know it isn't the network because my ipad is working on the wireless connection fine. I found another solution on here switching the security settings for the wireless, but this is the apartment's wireless so they have it open, and I won't be able to mess with it at all. • Getting UPK data into Excel

  Did you ever want someone to review your UPK outline outside of the Developer? You can send your outline to an Excel report, which can be distributed through email. Depending on how much additional data you want with your outline, there are two ways you can do this task. Basic data: • You can print a listing of all the items in the outline. • With your outline open, choose File/Print... • Choose the "Save document as" command on the right, and choose Excel (or xlsx). • HINT: If you have not expanded your entire outline, it's faster to use the commands in Developer to expand the entire outline. However, you can expand specific sections by clicking on them in the print preview. • NOTE: If you have the Details view displayed rather than the Player view, you can print all the data that appears in that view. Advanced data: If you desire a more detailed report, you can use the HP Quality Center publishing style, which also creates an Excel file. This style contains a default set of fields for use with Quality Center, but any of the metadata fields can be added to the report, and it can be used for more than just importing into HP Quality Center. To add additional columns to the HP Quality Center publishing style: 1. Make a copy of the publishing style. This process ensures that you have a good copy to revert to if something goes wrong with your customizations, and also allows you to keep your modifications when the software is upgraded. 2. Open the copy of the columnspec.xml file in your favorite XML editor - I use notepad. (This file is located in a language-specific folder in the HP Quality Center publishing style.) 3. Scroll down the columnspec file until you find the column to include. All the metadata fields that can be added to the report are listed in the columnspec file - you just need to tell the system to include the columns. 4. You will see a series of sections like this: 5. Change the value for "col export" to "yes". This will include the column in the Excel file. 6. • Help trying to get two-finger scrolling to work on Asus UL80VT

  Multi-touch works fine on Windows 7 with: two-fingers scroll vertical and horizontally, two-finger tap for middle click, and three-finger tap for right click. However with Ubuntu, I've never been able to get multi-touch to "save" and work, I was able to get it to work a few times but after restarting - it would just reset back. I have the settings for two-finger scrolling on: Mouse and Touchpad Touchpad Two-finger scrolling (selected) Enable horizontal scrolling (ticked) The cursor stops moving when I try to scroll with two fingers, but it doesn't actually scroll the page. When I perform xinput list, I get: Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? Solution (not ideal for most people) So, I ended up reinstalling a fresh 12.04 after indirectly playing around with burg and plymouth then removing plymouth which removed 50+ packages (I saw the warnings but was way too tired and assumed I could just 'reinstall' them all after (except that didn't work).   I just received a mpman ts300 mp3 player for Christmas. But when I try to connect it to ubuntu (10.10) through usb it doesn't seem to be recognized. I searched for a linuxdriver but came up with nothing. I even tried installing mpman manager from the software center, but still the same problem... Has anybody got any ideas about how to fix this? • Can't boot 12.04 installed alongside Windows 7

  I realize there are other questions like this one here, but I have visited them and tried several things and nothing is helping. One of them had a suggestion to boot the liveCD, and sudo mount /dev/sda* /mnt and to then chroot and reinstall grub. I did this and it did not help. Then on the Windows side, I downloaded a free version of easyBCD and chose to add a Grub2 Ubuntu 12.04 entry. On restart I saw this entry, but when I click on it it takes me to a Windows failed to boot error, as if it wasn't even trying to boot Ubuntu. I have booted from Ubuntu liveCD once again and have a snapshot of my GParted I ran this bootinfoscript thing from the liveCD, here are my results: It seems grub is on sda. I just want to be able to boot into my Ubuntu on startup. When I was using easyBCD, it kept saying I had no entries at all, so I did the add entry thing for Ubuntu many times and I see several of those on boot screen now. I'd love to get rid of all those unusable options.
