• Is there benefit to maintain a large project with bad code?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

• How can I increase the text size in empathy chat windows?

  The text that appears in empathy chat windows is quite small, even though I have set the font DPI to a large value in Preferences Appearance. There does not appear to be any option to make this larger so that I can read what other people are sending me easily. I've been using pidgin in the meantime because it is a little better in this respect. I would be grateful for any tips on how to increase the text size in empathy chat windows, even if this involves clever .gtkrc-2.0 hacks. Thanks!

  I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

  I have written one web services using Java. Its already live (Up & Running). During development I have SVN(repository) + Jira for task maintenance + Maven for building the web services. Now i have some small update for my web services and i have created that task in Jira and committed the files in svn with respect to Jira-Id after all testing, etc.. Say my web services is used by 10 clients, we did not give our source code to them. Is there any steps/procedure available to release patch/updates? • Can I set up a hostname alias that is only active in a specific network?

  I have a small ARM box running ownCloud in my house, and a domain bound to my DSL router with Dynamic DNS. This works well as I can configure the ownCloud client to use the domain name, which works both in the house and when I'm on the road. However, at home I would like to let my laptop and my server talk to each other directly on the local network, rather than as if they were talking over the Internet (including DNS resolution for my domain name, routing all traffic through the DSL machinery etc.). I know that I can set a hostname alias for my domain in /etc/hosts - the problem is that I want this alias to only be active when I'm in the home network, while in all other cases DNS resolution should be used as normal. Is this possible?

• Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

• ubuntu will not connect after restart

  Firstly, I hope this hasn't been covered elsewhere, I have searched but haven't found this particular problem. I updated to 12.04 a while back and though I now thoroughly regret that decision, I'm able to live with 12.04 and all it's odd little quirks. The one problem that I would like to fix is this. I have a small network, using a router modem which stays on most of the time. If the computer is switched off, when it is switched on again I have to click on "auto Ethernet" in "Network" in order to get on the internet. It then works fine. Previous versions just connected automatically on restart. When 12.04 says it is unable to connect, other computers on the network are able to connect. Thanks for any help.

• Lubuntu 13.10 - Laptop Loses wireless after sleep

  I'm running Lubunu 13.10 on an hp G62 - I'm new to Lubuntu having used ubuntu previously, but I've made the switch as my laptop is now getting toward the lower end of acceptability, and I'm delighted with how well it runs. Anyway, I'm having an issue that if I close the lid of the laptop it won't reconnect to the wi-fi when I open it again, and I'm not sure how to even force it to scan for a network - I have to restart it at the moment - and then it always connects perfectly. The router is a BT Business Hub 405. Any help much appreciated - thank you.

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. So, my to my question - I got loop that run 5 times and in each time it echo something, If I'll make variable and the loop will add the text I want to echo into the variable and just in the end I'll echo the variable - will it be faster? loop 1 (with the echo inside the loop) for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { echo "test"; } loop 2 (with the echo outside [when the loop finish]) $echostr = ""; for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { $echostr .= "test"; } echo $echostr; I know that loop 2 will increase a bit the file size and therefore the user will have to download more bytes but If I got huge loop will it be better to use second loop or not? • How to remove geoclue-master?

  Looking in System Monitor I saw a process called geoclue-master. As far as I can tell, this reports my precise location to applications and the internet. This computer is sitting in the same office all the time so I have no need whatsoever for such a thing, and would rather have the memory and processor cycles that this unnecessary service uses up - however small - free for things that I do need and want. I could not find instructions for disabling and removing this service so I renamed the file, but then the calendar disappeared from the notification area. Is there a way to remove this service but leave the calendar? I'm using 11.10.

• How to push through a domain transfer in spite of the 60 day rule

  I recently purchased a domain through a registrar which I won't name here. Within the first five minutes of logging in, I found a severe vulnerability that allows me access to all registration details of all users. Simply put, I do not trust this registrar with any kind of business. But I'm unable to transfer the domain because, for some reason, it has to exist in its current state for 60 days. We're planning to launch the site this weekend - we can't wait 60 days. But I can not trust this registrar: if I found such a severe vulnerability in the first few minutes, how many more similar un-trustables will I find in those 60 days? Is there a higher authority to whom I can submit a case to get my domain transferred to a different registrar?

  I have no previous experience on creating a project for a seller which will use barcode reader. I am trying to put together a small project but I cannot figure out how the pieces should glue together. I will create a sample with Motorola Scanner SDK to read barcodes and from that point, I have couple of questions: How UPC barcodes work in general?
