• Why does Windows share permissions change file permissions?

  When you create a (file system) share (on windows 2008R2) with access for specific users does it changes the access rights to the files to match the access rights to the share? We just killed our intranet web site when sharing the INetPub folder (to a few specified users). It removed the file access rights for authenticated users, i.e., the user could not log in using single signon (using IE & AD)! Could someone please tell me why it behaves like this? We now have to reapply the access right every time we change the users in the share killing the site in the process every time!

• Cross-Forest Trust

  I am looking at testing a cross-domain trust we can have two domain controllers (with different forests and domain names) setup so we can move everyone onto the new domain. We do NOT run exchange on site and we do not have any links to O365 to AD currently. Onto the problem: I have setup two DCs in a Virtual Machine: They are on the same network 192.168.0.* The Windows 2003 server: Name: OLDSRVR "Clone" of our current Domain Controller IP: 192.168.0.1 Domain: internal.test.com The Windows 2012 server: Name: ADCTEST01 Brand new domain setup from scratch separate to internal.test.com Domain: internal.test2.com IP: 192.168.0.2 OLDSRVR can only see ADCTEST if it has dynamic IP set. If I set a static IP it cannot see it. If I try using the dynamic IP and try to join it gets to the end then complains "??The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" Any ideas?

  Hi All, Is it possible to emulate my customer production environment inside my AD domain by just creating the same domain inside my primary DNS server ? Can I created mycustomer.com DNS zone (STUB) just for the sake of listing few database servers and application servers and then for the other DNS records eg. MX, NS and the other refer to the REAL MX record entry so that my Exchange Server email flow is unaffected to mycustomer.com ? because if I just create A record in my current domain for some of the servers, the FQDN is not exactly what I want.   Since the old days ISA and now TMG have had several great features that I often want to deploy to my customers because of the enhanced functionality and security, but often the cost of an additinal server HW, Windows Server, and TMG license is too much to justify when compaired to a $300-500 appliance. Are there other gateway firewalls that can perform one or more of these application layer features: pre-auth incoming http traffic against AD/LDAP before sending packets to internal server (forms auth or basic creds popup)? read host headers of incoming http traffic (even on https) to a single public IP and route packets to different internal servers based on that host header?

• Cloning a Windows server with VMWare ESXi without domain membership conflicts

  We are using VMWare ESXi 3.5, and have found it quite useful for cloning a live server to then use the virtualized version to test/practice software upgrades. The trouble is, when the virtualized version fires up, it registers itself on our domain (Active Directory), causing the original server to no longer be accessible via Windows shares. The fix is to remove the virtualized version from the domain, configuring it to use a workgroup instead, deleting the Computer account in AD, and then removing the real server from the domain and re-adding it. Is there a better procedure? Note, we cannot simply disconnect the virtual network from the virtualized server, as it needs to be connected to the network to actually be removed from the domain.

• Interface to collect successful remote backups status

  I would like to deploy into our infrastructure a web interface that could register when the copies are finished and if for some reason they haven't. The current issue is that we are doing on site backups for customers, for each backup a mail is sent ad the end of the backup, the problems is that sometimes the mail isn't sent for a variety of reasons: System doesn't have internet Backup system crashed before sending the mail etc.. What I'd like to do is to have a web interface that the backup software cant visit after doing the backup (either if it's a success or a fail), that acknowledges that the backup has finished, after some time, I'd like to receive a report of the machines that hadn't done the backup. Is there anything remotely similar to this that I could use/adapt to our environment? UPDATE: Just found out this (paessler.com) that seems to be a privative solution of what I intended.

• Microsoft InTune in a SBS2008 Environment

  I'm looking into using InTune and Office 365, mainly for the licensing benefits it brings but also because our company is moving to having more users based around the globe and I feel it will make managing the computers easier. Currently we have a SBS2008 (Premium) server running Exchange and File and Print which I need to keep for File and Print (Exchange can move to Office 365). I cant find any information on how the AD is synchronized between InTune and the SBS server (as users will still needs access control to file shares on the SBS server). Does anyone have any experience in doing this or even know if its possible? Richard

  Hi, I have a Netware Novell server with an eDirectory and different objects configured. I implemented an OEServer2 SP1 to emulate a DSfW to manage the eDirectory with AD. I join the domain with the Administrator login and I am logged as the Administrator domain. So far, there are no problems. When I open the MMC window on Windows Server 08 and snap in the "Active Directory Users and Computers" I can see all the OUs and objects presented in the Netware N. server. But, when I select some OUs I can have an error, and when I select other I don’t have this error. Error: “Data from XXXXX is not available from Domain Controller OES2.yyyy.local because: The server is unwilling to process the request. Try again later, or choose another DC by selecting Connect to Domain Controller on the Domain context menu.” With XXXX= OU’s name and yyyy.local= domain name and OES2 server name If somebody can upload this SP or post a link to download it...   Server 2003 SP2 (not R2) with 2 new Win 7 Pro workstations. Home Drive is set in AD (not GP) to map to \\server\users\username. Home Drive map fails, other network drives map correctly. No error logged on server or PC, Win 7 shows "Could not reconnect all network drives." There is no Y: (Home Drive) listed, either in the GUI or via Net Use. Manual map via batch file in startup group with the same path works correctly? Home Drive map works correctly on XP workstations.

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

• Windows 2003-R2-Server: Process "System" takes large chunks of CPU time

  I have a domain controller running 2003 R2. The server behaves very well when restarted daily, however, each day it is not restarted, there's a process called "System" that takes enourmous chunks of CPU time (up to 95%). The server supports AD, WINS, DNS, has Kaspersky Endpoint Security running, and manages backups via Arcserve 15. When I tried so far: Process Explorer (ex-Sysinternals) shows that the "System" process has no sub-processes. In the "Threads" tab of the detailled view I can see that 90% of the CPU time is used up by "ntkrnlpa.exe+0x803c0". The "Interrupts" process is running at 3-5% of CPU time, I'm not sure if this accounts for the amount of CPU time that System takes.

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office.   We have a SharePoint Services 3.0 site set up supporting about 300 users right now. This report is isolated and has never been duplicated. We have one AD user who cannot log into the SharePoint site with his account from his machine and is subsequently returned a 401.1 error. If any other user tries to log on with their account from his machine, it works okay. If he moves to another machine and logs on, it works okay. The only solution to this point has been to install FireFox on the machine. When he authenticates with FF, everything is okay. Remedies tried so far: Cleared cookies/cache Turned off/on Integrated Windows Authentication in IE Downgraded IE 8 to IE 6 Removed site from Intranet Sites zone Renamed the machine Disjoined/Rejoined Domain

• Network Printer Issue.

  Hello, I have a Windows-7 Desktop at office. There is a network printer Dell MFP2335dn which is installed on this dekstop. The printer worked fine for me(I could print from my desktop), sometime back but recently i am not been able to print. When i give a print job, it stays in the queue for a long time, nothing gets printed. When i see the status of the printer in "Devices and Printers", it says - Offline. I removed the printer installed on my Desktop, and tried to install the drivers downloaded from Dell website: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R241894&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=349205 But still the same problem.   Preliminary Note: After reading what I wrote below, I would like to stress that this ain't a TeamViewer ad. It's just that all other tools that I checkked online seem to miss one feature or the other. :-) OK, so I'm currently trying to get a picture of available solutions for remote desktop software. I have found (through personal usage) that TeamViewer pretty much ticks all boxes that I personally would want from any remoting tool. (Specifically it's setup is amazingly trivial.) It supports a wide range of platforms and it's even free for private use, so I'm really quite OK with it. I would be interested if anyone knows of other tools that ticks as many boxes as TeamViewer seems to do.

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

  I've got a WSS3 sharepoint site that requires windows authentication both in IIS and via the Sharepoint site. What I would like to do is in the case that a user does not provide valid AD credentials they are redirected to a custom error page. Currently, if the user immediately hits cancel when prompthey will see a plain text response of "401 UNAUTHORIZED". If they make an attempt and then hit cancel they instead see a blank page. I have looked into several options such as customErrors, httpModule interception (only saw examples for this after the user is authenticated), IIS Url rewrites (didn't see how this could help). Is there a good way to do this?

The below two methods i tried to recover to the new purchasing server,but it is fail. 1)First Method: Using the windows 2008 R2 CD to boot and carry out recover from backup. Everything is OK, but after reboot it will come out blue screen and restart again. 2)Second Method: a)Install the OS in this new server b) Reboot the server to DSRM. c)Using the Windows Backup Tools to restore the system states only After reboot, it will come out the blue screen error and restart again. I know this is may be the different hardware issue, but how to resolve? Or can we only restore the AD services not whole system status? Any suggestion?

• Superscope DHCP leases and configuration set up

  Hello I wanted to see if someone could help with a network problem I am having. Right now we have a super-scope and scopes of 192.168.50.1 and 192.168.51.1, as of now both are activated but only 192.168.50.1 is handing our leases, 192.168.51 wont. here is a summary of our network Gateway: watchguard firebox x750e for our router/gateway at 192.168.50.1 I set up as a secondary IP address 192.168.51.1 Server: Server 2008 r2 standard, running our DNS @ 192.168.50.242 and 8.8.8.8 as a secondary, AD, and DHCP. On that NIC card i have 192.168.50.242 as the IP address and 192.168.51.242 as a secondary. 192.168.50.1 as the default gateway and 192.168.51.1 as a secondary. Im am not very knowledgeable at this but as far as i have researched after adding a super scope and activating scopes, they should automatically start handing out addresses and I cant figure out why only one does. any help at all would be appreciated.

• Windows 2008 Server Unable to activate with other methods

  I'm trying to activate windows 2008 server SP2 today since the activation trial is done. I do not have an internet connection with this server so I can not activate online, and with the other servers in this farm I've been able to run the slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and then it would open up the activate by phone method and we would just activate that way. I say again, I don't have an internet connection so I can not do the online activate. If I do the slui 4 it brings up the activation window but show me other ways to activate is still greyed out. I've disabled the NIC on this Hyper-V server and I still can not get the other way to activate to show up... Anyone have any ideas? This computer is one of my AD servers so.. it being in notification mode kind of sucks. Thanks.

Most of our users operate under a policy that propts them for a password change every 6 months as a security measure, with a few administrator accounts & terminal machines not using the policy for the sake of ease as they are needed all the time. Recently all machines regardless of policy have started asking for a password change out of schedule.   I have a batch file that takes a computer name as its argument and will install Java JRE on it remotely. Now, Im trying to run this Powershell script to repeatedly call the batch file and install Java on any system that it finds without the latest version. It seems to run error-free, but the statements inside the if code block never seem to run - even when the if conditional test evaluates to true. • Is there a way to reliably backup and restore a complex network configuration on Windows XP?

  I have some Windows XP laptops (10+) that host a ad-hoc WIFI network connection to wireless PDA devices. The laptop itself is connected via a 3rd party VPN radio network. The radio network itself seems to be reliable. If one small thing goes wrong with the network configuration then the PDA loses connectivity and so I need a way to backup a networking config , either via a script or a 3rd party program, so that I can restore a working network configuration if something goes wrong. Is this possible? Does anyone have any ideas?
