• OS X Login Authentication Against Leopard Server

  I am doing a few tests with OS X Server before I have to do a deploy in a few months. I have configured Open Directory, and created a few users. I've configured Directory Utility on a 10.5 client, but the login authentication doesn't work the way I would expect. I would expect I could user a username/password from any user created in Open Directory and be able to log into the client. Instead, it appears I need to create a local user, which you then sync with a directory user using Directory Utility. Alternatively, if I add an Active Directory config to the client, I can use any AD user, as I would expect. Am I hoping for the impossible, or is something likely wrong with the configuration?

  I did a backup to a remote nfs folder with rsync, from a MAC to a Remote Debian. The final backup is 58GB less than the original. Rsync says that everything was OK, and nothing to update. • Align windows to a grid in Snow Leopard

  I've become so used to aligning windows to a grid on Windows (via Win+Arrow Key) and Linux (via Compiz Grid) that when I sit down at a Mac I want to gouge my eyes out trying to align windows. Is there any sort of application or service for Mac OS X that handles windows like this? Here is an example of Compiz Grid plugin.

• Macbook Pro 2.2ghz 2011 (OSX 10.6.7) problem with NTFS 3G

  I installed NTFS 3G but now get the following error message when I try to plug in my external drive. I also get it on startup about my Windows partition. Uninstall/ reinstall does not work. NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1at /volumes/freeagent GoFlex Drive because the following error occured: /library/filesystems/fuse.fs/support/fusefs.kext failed to load- (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/ kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8). The MacFUSE file system is not available (71) Any help would be great. I'd hope to avoid reinstalling OS X if possible!

• Inbound connections using Internet Connection Sharing in Apple/Mac/Leopard

  I have a Mac mini which I'm using to give some other devices wireless access, by sharing it's Airport connection with the local ethernet, and that is plugged into a switch. All devices can get online no problem. (See how: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20041112101646643 and http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304 ) The issue is that I need to be able to connect in to these machines as well (at least, for the Slingbox to work). All the devices have 192.168.2.* addresses, and the rest of my local network is on 192.168.1.*. I tried setting a static route so that the 192.168.2.* addresses would use a gateway of 192.168.1.50 (my mac mini's address) but that didn't seem to help. Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible? I admit I'm not certain what Internet Connection sharing is really doing under the hood... perhaps it just does basic nat, and doesn't do the type of routing I'm looking for. If so, anyone know if this is possible?

• OSX Mail.app send only plaintext but read as html

  I get email which seems properly plaintext formatted, but when I forward it out, the font size ends up being enormous and a few other formatting stupidities. So I tried the following: defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool TRUE And this works great, all outgoing email regardless of the text original is plaintext only, just the way I like it. But now for incoming email only the plaintext portions are available to read without going into View - Message - Raw Source (or something similar to that). Does anyone know how I can force only outgoing mail to include only plaintext, but continue to read incoming mail in the formatting it was intended?

• Root certificate authority works windows/linux but not mac osx - (malformed)

  I have created a self-signed root certificate authority which if I install onto windows, linux, or even using the certificate store in firefox (windows/linux/macosx) will work perfectly with my terminating proxy. I have installed it into the system keychain and I have set the certificate to always trust. Within the chrome browser details it says "The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information. Error type: Malformed certificate" I used this code to create the certificate: openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 4096 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf If the issue is NOT that it is malformed (because it works everywhere else) then what else could it be? Am I installing it incorrectly? Update I tried changing the certificate attributes, but to no avail: openssl genrsa -des -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 2048 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha256 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf

• Dynamic to static internal IP address (Snow Leopard server)

  I purchased a new Mac mini server, since my old iMac, which was a server pretty much died. My problem is this. How do I change my internal IP address for my mac mini server to a static address, like 192.168.0.2? Before you guys harp on me, my old server was running Ubuntu Hardy and I only had to map the IP address in the router, which would automatically assign the reserved address through DHCP. Now, I know things are different between the two, but my problem is that the mac is not accepting the assigned IP address or the router just is not assigning. However, every time I have manually changed it on the Mac to an address of my choice, it takes the computer off the Internet. My router is a NetGear WTG624 v2, I believe. I need this to work, so I can utilize Dynamic DNS.

  Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. The connection is done by: Xnest :1 -query 192.168.0.193 -geometry 1280x1024 and it gives me some errors: (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (dlopen(/usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so, 5): image not found) (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer (EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb/rules/base (EE) XKB: No components provided for device Virtual core keyboard Couldn't get keyboard.   I have a group of users on my server, "Developers", and I would like an environment variable to be set for them whenever they login. More specifically, when anyone in this group logs in, I would like the equivalent of: setenv ANDROID_SDK_HOME /Developers/Android/User to be set at login. I can do this with a login script if necessary, but what I'm asking is: is it possible to set this type of thing in Profile Manager, Workgroup Manager, Directory Utility, etc? Thanks - I've looked everywhere but can't find anything.

• Mac OSX DHCP Stopped Working [on hold]

  Tethering a Raspberry PI to a MacBook (Mavericks) via ethernet is proving to be a real pain. This worked for about a day. My MacBook required a rare reboot and once it came back up the Pi won't get an address. I've confirmed it's not a problem with the Pi. It's a problem with the MacBook for sure. It's basically just stopped giving out IPs. I've read as much as I've found about how to fix this friggin' problem, but I've thus far come up blank. Internet sharing Wi-fi Ethernet enabled, and/or Edited /etc/bootpd.plist as described here (http://www.jacquesf.com/2011/04/mac-os-x-dhcp-server/ - this worked initially and now no longer does) Pi connected directly to the router has no problems. My MacBook DHCP server will no longer give out addresses. Any help would be much appreciated.

  with yesterday's rollout of icloud, it seems those of us who refuse to upgrade to lion are left in the dust as far as it goes with calendar/contact syncing. i have had a mobileME account for years, i use it to sync my calendars, contacts and email between iphone/imac/macbook pro. i am NOT upgrading to lion. with the icloud transition, it seems im only able to access my mobileME email, but my calendars and contacts have stopped syncing. has anyone been able to get sync working with icloud contacts/calendars under 10.6.8? if not, what are some viable options for a seamless, background sync of calendars and contacts between my various devices?

• Prompt for user group when logging into OSX domain

  When a user is a member of more than one group, when logging in to a 10.6 machine, it shows a prompt asking for what group to apply settings for. We're using the groups to mount different shares, e.g. Production and Accounts, based on user membership. Often, a user is a member of more than one group, and needs all the drives available. The Open Directory server is running 10.6 also. Is there a way to skip this prompt and apply settings for all groups. I can foresee that there may be conflicts between group settings, but perhaps a priority can be set too? Or is this totally the wrong way to go about this?

• Macbook Pro - Disk Locked HD needs repair, can't reinstall OSX

  I basically have the same problem. A friends HD was acting badly. Ran Disk Repair Util many times. Says disk needs repair but it won't repair it. I re formatted and installed 10.8 but that hasn't fixed it. Ive tried partitioning it and that won't work. Now I'm trying to get system 10.8 to reinstall and it says the disk is locked. Your fix requires Terminal, is that right? How do I open terminal to run your fix? Please help if you can. Disk Warrior couldn't fix it. I think the disk is bad. What do you think?

• Mac OSX 10.8 Server DNS Domain Routing

  I just cant seem to figure out the logic in how to configure my Mac Server. So I have set up an DNS, which will take the domain and all subdomains and point towards an IP. File: db.mydomain.com (in /var/named/) mydomain.com. 10800 IN SOA mydomain.com. admin.mydomain.com. ( 2012110903 ; serial 3600 ; refresh (1 hour) 900 ; retry (15 minutes) 1209600 ; expire (2 weeks) 86400 ; minimum (1 day) ) 10800 IN NS mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 www.mydomain.com. 10800 IN A 10.0.1.2 So I want all of these requests to be requested to the 10.0.1.2 server, as I run 2 servers in my cluster. This one has always handled the requests, and now I want to add a server in between. So the server in between will get all the signals from my router which NAT the trafic coming from outside. So after setting this up and trying to point my port 80 towards my new server which will be the middle point, it doesn't work. Is it even possible to do it this way? First server: Mac Second server: Linux So what I try to achieve once more: 1. User goes to mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com 2. User request gets handled by my first server 3. First server refers to a local server, which is only available locally (it is configured to allow requests on port 80 and handle them) 4. Second server receives signal 5. Second server returns a request (either directly send to user or send through first server, whichever is most secure and configurable) I also want to be able to set up domains that lead to other servers in the future, and some that are only available within the VPN. (If that changes anything) I hope some kind soul could help me with this, it is really cumbersome for my mind to get the logic here. Do I have to configure my other server in any way? /Marcus

• Windows server 2003SP2 as LDAP replica master for Mac OSX 10.6

  Hello there, we have a single domain controller with Windows 2003 with few child. All the users are in the main DC. We have already created a connection from AD to Mac Xserve 10.6 and can read all the users, but: 1. If the DC goes down (or the net), Mac lose all the users, so no file access, no emails, no nothing. 2. the users are in read only. Mac admin cannot reset password, change attribute and so on. What we need is a stable environment where both AD admins and LDAP admins can manage the users; if one server goes offline the users of the other server should work (email, shared folders) just fine. Thanks in advance P.S. we already tried to connect the MacOSX to Windows LDAP, instead of AD, but we're unable to do it: MacOSX requires DNS IP (gotcha), user admin and password (ok) and a root LDAP password we're unable to find any reference of it in Windows 2003.

• Cannot access internal network on OSX 10.6.6

  Last week, I began having trouble connecting to our internal web servers. Usually, a refresh would take care of it or switching to a different wireless network, but as of yesterday, this wasn't enough. We have an internal DNS server using dnsmasq and a private internal host name (us.lcl). Once I started having more issues with the names not resolving, I tried pinging the server. Using the internal host name (s1.us.lcl), it failed. I tried using the IP address, but that also failed. I have no problems accessing external sites with the exception of it being a bit slower than normal. A reboot yesterday at lunch time after following the instructions here seemed to fix the issue, but when I came into the office this morning, it had stopped working. As of this posting, I cannot ping, ssh or access the web server using the internal host name or ip address. I'm the only one running 10.6 in my office and none of my colleagues has this issue.

  I had a drive "Fail" and drop out of our raid 5 array... After reboot the drive came back up, but its "Roaming". How do I re-integrate it back into the RAID 5? Right now I have no redundancy with only 2 disks in the array. The migrate RAID Set feature of RAID Utility seems to want to crate a RAID 0 only? • USB Mouse disconnects ONLY on bootcamp (win7,works fine on OSX) [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often? 7 answers I have a mid 2010 iMac with a Logitech G500 mouse which works fine on OS X. I game on Windows 7 in bootcamp, and for a month now I have been getting random mouse disconnects while gaming. Sometimes none, sometimes 2-3 per minute. The mouse lights go off and I get the disconnect sound from Windows 7 then it connects again after a second or two. I tried changing the port I connect the mouse to, but still the same thing. The only devices on USB are Apple keyboard with Apple extension cord, the mouse, and a Creative SoundBlaster Tactic 3D Alpha USB Gaming Headset. Any ideas?

• Apache mod_rewrite not working properly on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

  Hello all, I'm trying to create a PHP website with clean URLs with Apache's mod_rewrite, using a .htaccess file. mod_rewrite seems to be working, however, it claims it cannot find files on my server that do exist. Just as a basic test, this is what my .htaccess file looks like at the moment--going to [mysite]/page should redirect to the index.php file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^page$ index.php Afaik, I have setup the .conf file appropriately as well: <Directory "/Users/myuser/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> However, when I try accessing the URL setup via mod_rewrite ( localhost/~myuser/mysite/page ), I get this: Not Found The requested URL /Users/myuser/Sites/mysite/index.php was not found on this server. However, that file does exist, and that is the proper location! The site works fine otherwise, if I go to localhost/~myuser/mysite/index.php, everything works fine--minus any sort of clean URLs, of course. Has anyone seen this before/have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

• socket problem with MySQL

  This is a recent problem... MySQL was working and a couple of days ago I must have done something. I deleted MySQL and tried reinstalling using the .dmg file. The mysql.sock file never gets created and I get the following error messages: Hristo$ mysql Enter password: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) I also tried stopping Apache and installing but Apache gave me an error... I don't know if this is good or bad: Hristo$ sudo apachectl stop launchctl: Error unloading: org.apache.httpd I tried the MacPorts installation as well but the socket file still didn't get created. I don't really know what to do and I don't want to reinstall Snow Leopard and start from scratch :/ I also tried installing the 32-bit version and same deal. No luck. Finally... I tried doing the source installation but when I get to the configuration step, I get the following error: -bash: ./configure: No such file or directory The file is "mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.tar.gz" so I think it is the proper file for source installation and yes I have a 64 bit system.   Hi All, A friend of mine and I have been trying to use git for a project. It is hosted on his server, and I git clone it as: git clone [email protected]:/path/to/git/repos.git Pretty standard stuff, and it works great for a while. But every time one of us has added a large commit (which git supposedly handles very well), of the order of 100MB or so, the git repository gets kind of broken. Basically, at this point I will be able to push new changes and pull other changes (I think), but when I try to clone the repository in a fresh location using that command above, I get an error message that says: $git clone [email protected]:/path/to/git/repos.git Initialized empty Git repository in /local/path/to/repos/.git/ remote: Counting objects: 1455, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (1235/1235), done. error: git upload-pack: git-pack-objects died with error.s fatal: git upload-pack: aborting due to possible repository corruption on the remote side. remote: aborting due to possible repository corruption on the remote side. fatal: early EOF fatal: index-pack failed This has happened 3 or 4 times now, and it's always when I add a large commit. Any idea why this is happening? How can we fix it? We're both using Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Thanks! -M
