  The Software Update tool shows already installed updates. I already installed them a few times, clicking either the 'Update All' button or the indivisual 'Update' buttons. The apps are: Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Skitch, Evernote, Fotor. 'Check for unfinished downloads' reports all downloads have finished. Signing out and back in and reloading didn't help. $ sudo softwareupdate -ia Password: Software Update Tool Copyright 2002-2012 Apple Inc. Finding available software No updates are available. Googling didn't help. How can I fix the GUI tool so it updates its status? OSX 10.9.3

• Determine $DISPLAY socket name on OS X 10.6?

  I'm looking to do something that's a little odd. I'm SSH'ing from a server to a Snow Leopard client to start an X11 data display process. In other words, SSH's X11 forwarding isn't what I want. I can do: client$ echo $DISPLAY /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ ls -l $DISPLAY srwx------ 1 myuser wheel 0 Dec 9 15:47 /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 And, when I do: server$ ssh myuser@client client$ export DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ xterm I happily get my xterm. What I need, then, is some way to find out the correct value for $DISPLAY in my ssh session. From what I've read, $DISPLAY is set by launchd, but I haven't found any way to see that value. If it matters, I know that when my process connects from $server to $client, $client will logged in to the terminal as the same user.

• Disable "Print and Close" Preview Shortcut on OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Leopard and there is a global shortcut that I would really like to disable. Apparently, now if you select a document and press Command + p, Preview will open, print the document, then close. I'm sure this was done with the purest intentions but, unfortunately, it is right next to Command + o, which I use many times a day to open files. Since installing Mountain Lion, I've accidentally printed way too many documents just trying to open them! I've gone into the Keyboard preference pane and tried to find where this shortcut is located, but haven't had any success. Anyone know how I can disable this?

• Visual Studio Development on Virtual Box, Boot Camp, or VMWare Fusion

  I currently have a Mac, 2ghz and 2 gigs of ram, running OS X Leopard and Virtual Box with a Windows 7 Pro 32bit virtual machine. Performance on the virtual machine is fine for minor tasks but is very clunky while trying to multi-task or develop in Visual Studio 2008. What would be my best option for being able to use Visual Studio, keeping cost and time in mind? 1) Upgrade ram to 4 gigs ($100). Will this really improve my performance enough to use Visual Studio in a Windows 7 vm? Or am I just wasting time/money? 2) Reinstall/restore Windows 7 disk image as a Boot Camp partition. I assume this should improve my performance, yes? 3) Purchase VMWare fusion instead of VirtualBox. Does Fusion require less resources to run? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance

• Can't downgrade or update jailbroken iPhone

  I can't update or downgrade my iPhone 3GS, Firmware 4.3.5 tethered with redsn0w. Whenever I try to update it, I get a "device isn't eligible" error. I researched on how to do that, like changing host files, but none of them worked for me. • Active Directory password update not recognized on OS X 10.7.3?

  We have a few Macs in our office which are bound to our Active Directory (Server 2k8R2) domain for login authentication and access to file shares. For the most part this has worked without trouble. I recently changed my AD password (from the Windows box that is my main desktop machine), and my iMac still wants my old password for logins—even after a reboot. It correctly prompts for the new password when I attempt to connect to Windows smb file shares. The last time I changed my password, the iMac was running Snow Leopard and picked up the password change as expected. I'm a little bit of an OS X n00b, so I apologize if this should be obvious. My searching has turned up numerous issues people have had with Lion and Active Directory, but not this particular problem. Possibly related, we do have mobile accounts enabled for AD in the Directory Utility options. I assume this causes credentials to be cached locally, but it's not clear to me how to get them to update.

• Why does Mac OS X sometimes complain that a copy failed because a file is in use?

  Recently I've been copying files from DVDs to network storage on my Mac running Leopard 10.5.7. I'm just dragging and dropping in Finder to perform the copy. Occasionally the copy will fail with a dialog complaining that a file is in use. If I repeat the copy generally it completes successfully. I could understand this being a problem if one was trying to move a file and it was open by another app. But none of these files are open in other apps. I just pop the DVD in, drag and drop the files to my NAS's network share and sometimes it fails with the "file in use" error. This is very annoying. Anyone have any ideas?

• Terminal runs svn commands very slowly, how can I speed this up?

  Spending all day in terminal is beginning to get frustrating. We're working with large CakePHP projects, including a ton of schema files and complex controllers. Whenever I go into a project, and enter svn up, or svn ci my system chokes. It takes a good 15-30 seconds before it returns what revision number I'm on. I'm running OSX 10.6 on a Macbook Pro. Any reasoning behind this? Anyway I could fix this speed issue?

• Pressing 'Enter' doesn't really work in Firefox

  When I'm typing just about anywhere in Firefox on OSX and press enter, it simply doesn't do anything. This includes typing in a textarea element (which should take the cursor to the next line), in a search form (which should submit the form). I'm typing this very question in Firefox right now and I'm unable to advance the cursor to the beginning of the next line. I have no clue what I did to make this happen, but it's kinda driving me insane. This is Firefox 3.6.3 under Mac OS X 10.6. Thanks!

• How do I use XQuartz with ssh on OS X?

  I've downloaded the latest stable version of XQuartz on my Snow Leopard machine, and I'm trying to make an ssh connection with X forwarding but X11 keeps opening. How can I get OS X to use XQuartz? I had X11 installed I downloaded and installed XQuartz X11 is not open / running XQuartz is open and running I try and connect to a remote system using iTerm2: ssh user@remote -X X11 opens. XQuartz is still open, but I doubt it is doing anything. I also tried moving X11 to the trash but then the ssh connection will not complete, even though XQuartz is open. I also get the two warnings which I don't understand how to fix, even after reading the ssh man page. Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

• git-receive-pack : command not found.

  I made a git repo on a local machine with "git init --bare" and added it as the remote origin on the project on my main computer with ssh: git add remote origin [email protected]:repoName.git I was able to make a commit and push from my main computer to the other computer the day I created the repo, but today i tried and it didn't work. When I did "git push origin" it returned this error: bash: line 1: git-receive-pack: command not found fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The two machines are mac the main one running Leopard and the server one running Tiger. • XAMPP won't start Apache on Mac OS

  When I try starting Apache from the XAMPP control panel (Mac OSX Snow Leopard), I get the following error popup and Apache won't start: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/apachectl: line 70: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 XAMPP was running perfectly 10 minutes earlier. I stopped Apache to add some .conf files and it failed on restart. I removed all the new .conf files (i.e. reverted it to how it was before) but now I get the above message. EDIT: I've checked AppMonitor and I see the "httpd" processes (one by _www nested within root). Just tried quitting these but they're auto-restarted on new process IDs and it didn't solve the problem.

• Start a VPN session using a Terminal script

  I use an OSX Terminal session to start a VPN connection. The command that I execute at the prompt is: /etc/netlock/cvc -c :: This works as expected. I would like to save this to a script file that I can simply double-click to start. I created a file, 'vpn.command', added the command (list above), save it, and given execute permission: chmod +x vpn.command When I double-click the file, Terminal opens a BASH shell, executes the command, then exits. Upon closer inspection, the command is now '/etc/netlock/cvc -c ::; exit;' Why is the extra '; exit;' appended to my command? BTW, is there a way to execute another command, /etc/netlock/cvc -d, when the Terminal session is being closed so I can close the VPN automatically?

• Something keeps deleting my downloaded files

  I have been using utorrent for years now and recently I was surprised that I had 24GB free. I thought that was because I deleted some unused apps, but after awhile, I noticed my Torrents folder was gone(I put finished torrents in my Downloads/Torrents folder) I thought I accidentally deleted it(I use rm -r to delete huge files) so I shrugged and tried to download those 24GB back(after banging my head for the sheer stupidity) This morning, I noticed that again, my Torrent folder was gone! This made me think that something MUST be deleting my torrent files. I am not sure but my hunch is uTorrent(so I just upgraded it) or something else entirely. This is getting frustrating, so I hope someone can help me on this. My only guess is when I do CMD + w (I'm on a Mac, OSX Lion), it closes the window and somehow deletes the torrents? I am downloading files again now and will try to document what I do the tomorrow so I can add more input here.

  I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion.   I have a set of files from example001.txt to example100.txt. Each file contains a list of keywords from a superset (the superset is available if we want it). So example001.txt might contain apple banana ... otherfruit I'd like to be able to process these files and produce something akin to a matrix so there is the list of examples* on the top row, the fruit down the side, and a '1' in a column if the fruit is in the file. • Why is my portable WD MY PASSPORT drive is not recognized?

  My "MY PASSPORT" (Western Digital) portable drive is not recognized OSx. It used to be recognized, but not anymore. It does not appear in /Volumes. The hard drive is recognized by a Linux machine. • My iPhone, Macbook and Laptop won't connect to 192.168.1.*

  Previously I could connect perfectly with my iphone to my web server on 192.168.1.* but since I got a MacBook, I now can't even connect my iphone to either of the computers. I can connect to the wifi hub on my iphone, I can connect to the wifi hub on all the computers including my phone. Neither of my computers nor my iphone 5 can communicate with each other. What has happened? I've tried number of different local web servers, even tried the osx web server, but my iphone just wont connect to any.

• Synergy stopped moving cursor over to client computer (config worked previously)

  I am using QuickSynergy on OSX on my client computer and the standard Synergy program on Windows. I had a configuration that worked two days ago when I last used it, but today I came into work and it wasn't working. The odd thing is that the server shows that the client connects: NOTE: started server, waiting for clients NOTE: accepted client connection NOTE: client "danbook.local" has connected It's just that the cursor won't move to the other screen. The only change in either of my systems was that I added 4GB of RAM to the client, though that seems unimportant. What might cause this to happen?

• Unable to run Django on Mac OS X

  I'm working with a Django project on my Mac (running Leopard) and I want to show it to my team. I've already passed the neccessary port forwards from my router to my Mac's LAN IP address but it doesn't work. I've also tried running the XAMPP server since that always worked with my Windows XP computer but it still doesn't work. Whenever I type my > it's showing a Page Load Error. Is this possibly an issue with an Mac OS X configuration that I need to setup first to allow my port forwards to get in? It's my first time to do this with Mac, perhaps I need to configure something else in network preferences?

In 0002_[example.com].conf, I have this bit of code: <Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents/secret/"> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^137\.250\. RewriteRule .* /messages/secret.html </Directory> However, in this configuration, the RewriteCond always seems to evaluate to false, since the secret directory gets shown even if the client's address does not begin with 137.250. If I change the config to this <Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents/secret/"> RewriteEngine On RewriteRule .* /messages/secret.html RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^137\.250\. </Directory> the condition either does not get evaluated at all or always evaluates to true. Either way, all clients get blocked. What am I doing wrong?
