  I have the same problem with this topic! How to resolve BackgroundContainer.dll error on startup? The thing is i did everything that says in answer but i)I found nothing when i started regedit.exe and searched (F3 or CTRL+F) for BackgroundContainer.dll ii)I made a full scan with AntiVirus Scanner like Microsoft Security Essentials/ Defender and also i scaned my PC with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware,but i found nothing. So this pop up message on start up keep appeared! any idea? Thank you!

• Delete on windows vista and seven -- discovery process

  Hi SUs! I've recently encountered a problem. Using svn at work I needed to clear some space. As you may know svn directories are full of sub-directories and files. So the delete process begins with a step of discovering the items to be deleted (I guess this is for displaying the progress bar). But in my case it ended up to be still running after I watched Braveheart (Off-topic: good film in my opinion. On-topic: and it last 2h50) and counting 440 000+ files. I finally decided to cut off the process and use the good old cmd with a del <directory> to do the job. (Done in some minutes) So I'm wondering if someone know how to override the system to make it actually begins the process while scanning the other items? At the end, I just want the file to be deleted and I don't care the number of files to be deleted. On the contrary I care about the time it takes. Thanks

• How to monitor the size of files in Windows folder?

  What are some of good ways to automatically monitor the size of files in a directory and send warning email if they get close to a certain limit on a Windows server? I have a Progress DB installation to keep in check, and last week we hit some problems. Apparently, the size of extents has hit 2GB - and Progress won't work past that - we needed to open a new extent. I'm coming from a Linux environment, so I don't know what are the usual to monitor this in a Windows environment (or monitoring tools whatsoever). I prefer some generic solution, as I have a mixed environment (Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2). Thanks in advance for all usable alternative answers.

  I've mapped my domain users to a remote share, and I'm trying to get rid of the security warning that appears whenever a file is run from the remote share. I've tried adding the FQDN to the intranet list with no prevail and I'm starting to go crazy. I've also turned off IE Enhanced Security Configuration for both Admins and Users. • Mount a network drive when windows starts up without being logged in.

  Current Scenario: I have a NAS Box, and a Windows 2003 Server that our recording software is on (Security Cameras). The software stores the data on the NAS box. Currently someone has to be logged in with valid credentials in order to keep the drive mounted (e.g. domain admin). I know you can mount the drive with a batch file, but this stores credentials in clear text and is not a good solution. I am looking for another way to get the drive to mount on startup without someone having to be logged in. I do have a generic account setup that has access to read/write to the drive but can't log-in interactively, this is the account I would like to use to mount it if any. Any suggestions?

• What's the deal with NTFS tags in windows 7

  So back in the days of 'longhorn' there was this WinFS idea which was both cool looking and scary looking. Then it seemed to disappear, but we were told that many of the concepts would be rolled into Vista. Then maybe Win7. Anyway, nowadays if you look at a win7 Explorer window, you can have columns that have a lot of tag-based info about a file (right click on column header-more...), including one called "tags". Is this something in NTFS that can be modified per-file somehow? Is its GUI hiding, or is this something that's infinitely-delayed, or is it just a figment of my imagination? Sure would be nice to be able to get around the NTFS path 256 character limit for searches, and to filter file folders per Excel 2007.

• windows VPS running apache and mysql, php scripts running slow.. but cpu usage is 1-3%..

  So every night I run some cron jobs. It requires probably about 20 min to process all the records. I gather the script does something like 10,000 sql queries. I figure this task was just that intense and needs time to complete, but I looked at CPU and memory usage, and it is super low. Cpu usage is between 1-3% and once in a while will bounce to 50ish for 2-3 seconds. This VPS is running windows 2003 server with Apache and MySQL. Does this sound right?

(5) What am I to understand? What should I do to get it working form all of my computers.

• Active Directory FRS problems. 13508 error and other problems

  I have 3 Domain Controllers. We will call them DC1, DC2 and DC3. DC3 and DC2 show Event ID 13508 in their FRS logs with no follow-up event(13509 I think) to say the error had been fixed. DC1's FRS log no matter what you do never shows any events besides FRS service stopped and started. DC1 holds the SYSVOL that needs to be replicated to the other DC's. The other DC's sysvol folders are empty. I have tried the burflag method of fixing this but I haven't had any luck. My procedure for that was to stop all FRS services on all DC's. Then set the burflag on DC1 to D4 and the other two DCs burflag to D2. Started FRS on DC1 and the only event's I see in DC1's FRS event logs are service stopped and service started messages. This fact is leading me to believe that something is wrong on FRS for DC1. I believe there should be events 13553 and 13516 in the FRS event logs after an authoritative sysvol restore. The other two DC's do not have anything in their SYSVOL, otherwise I would have made one of them the authoritative sysvol. DC1 is MS Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 DC2 is MS Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1 DC3 is MS Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 I did not setup this domain originally but I am now the administrator of it, so I don't have a lot of background on why certain things may have been done in the past. My main goal is to try and fix these issues to get myself better prepared to decommision DC1 and add a DC running Server 2008 to my domain. Thanks.

• Excel 2010 data validation warning (compatibility mode)

  We have some legacy worksheets that were created in Excel 2003, which are used by LabVIEW-based test automation software. The current LabVIEW software can only handle the legacy .xls format, so we're forced to keep these worksheets as-is for the time being. We've migrated to Office 2010 and when working with these worksheets, I see this warning: "The following features in this workbook are not supported by earlier versions of Excel. These features may be lost or degraded when you save this workbook in the currently selected file format. Click Continue to save the workbook anyway. To keep all of your features, click Cancel and then save the file in one of the new file formats." "Significant loss of functionality" "One or more cells in this workbook contain data validation rules which refer to values on other worksheets. These data validation rules will not be saved." When I click 'Find', some cells that do indeed have validation rules are highlighted, but those rules are all on the same worksheet! We're using simple list-based validation, with some cells off to the side containing the valid values (for example, cell B4 has a List with Source "=$D$4:$E$4") This makes no sense to me whatsoever. One, the workbook was created in Excel 2003, so obviously we couldn't implement a feature that doesn't exist. Secondly, the modifications we're making don't involve changing the validation rules at all. Thirdly, the complaint that Excel is making is incorrect! All of the rules are on the same worksheet as the target. As if the story wasn't bizarre enough: I went ahead and saved the worksheet with Excel 2010. I then went to an old computer back in the lab and opened the document with Excel 2003. Guess what - the validations were untouched! My questions are: is this a legitimate bug in Excel 2010, or is this some exotic error in the legacy .xls worksheet that is confusing the heck out of Excel 2010? Has anyone else observed this issue working in compatibility mode?

• no mails routed to/from new Exchange 2010

  I have an Exchange Server 2003 up and running for years. Now I am in the mid of transition to Exchange Server 2010, I already installed it, put the latest Servicepack on it and everything seems fine, BUT: Mails do not get delivered to MailBoxes on the new Exchange 2010. e.g. when I create a new mailbox on the old server, Emails in and out to/from it work like a charm. But as soon as I move it to the new server, emails get stuck. Noe delivered from outside or old mailboxes, not send out from the new server to enywhere. Sending between Mailboxes on the new Server of course is working. I can see the connectors between old and new Server in the Exchange 2003 Admin Tool, but I cannot find these nowhere on the new server. I have also setup sending connectors at the new server to send out mails directly, but that does not work. In all other areas, the servers are perfectly working together - moving mailboxes between, seeing each other etc. "just" they dont exchange (!) any emails - Any ideas what I missed? I also followed the hints from: Upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, routing works in one direction only There Emails were transported at least in one direction, in my case they are not transported at all. Both my connectors are up and valid abd have the correct source/target shown on Get-RoutingGroupConnector | FL Kind regards Michael

• Sporadic email delivery to one user

  I have a user that occasionally does not receive emails from outside our organization. It does not seem to matter whether the other person is replying to an initial email or sending a new message. I have checked the Exchange System Manager and there is no record of the sender at all during this time period. No record of the message getting captured by the spam software (GFI Mail Essentials). The sender does not receive an NDR or any other indication that the message didn't arrive. It seems to me that these messages are not even getting to our servers at all. But, this is only impacting one user(that I am aware of) and not all the time. Some messages get through without any problem, others just disappear. The senders are not related at all. One is in another country, one uses AOL, one uses a corporate Exchange server locally. I can't seem to find a pattern. Where else can I look to try to figure out where these messages are going/getting captured? Are there additional logs that I can enable either within GFI or Exchange that might shed some light on this? Thanks. We are using Exchange 2003 on Server 2003. Desktop client is Outlook 2003 on Windows XP Pro.

• connecting to server with multiple nics in other vlan

  I have a windows 2003 server with 3 nics on 3 vlan's (this is in domain 1). nic 1 has a default gateway to my router/firewall (sonicwall). In nic 2 and 3 I have left it empty, because it is advised like that everywhere. Within this domain and VLAN's 1-3 everything works fine. BUT... I have a second domain (domain 2) with a 4th Vlan (all 4 VLAN's connected to the same router/firewall) from which my clients need to access the 2003 server in domain 1 (it's my antivirus management console for both domains). when i ping the server from my vlan4 by it's FQDN, it randomly chooses ip from nic 1, 2 or 3 from my 2003 server. (logically because that server is know in DNS with it's 3 IP-addresses. And that is needed for my VLAN's 1-3) I don't really have a problem with that. BUT, I only get an answer of NIC1 (which sounds logically to me, because it's the only one with a gateway). It is not a router problem, because I'm testing in this phase and ping from vlan4 to any machine in vlan1, 2 or 3 that has 1 nic works just fine. If i add a gateway to nic2 and nic3, I get answer from all 3 nics and this works fine. But I know it's adviced to not do that. Can anyone give me advice in this particular case? Would it really be a problem to add a gateway to nic 2 and 3? They would be pointing to the same router/firewall (only with different ip-address, based on the vlan). Or is there another good solution to fix this problem? Thank's in advance, Thierry.

• Mass-migrating from POP3 to Exchange 2010, how do I copy mailboxes?

  I'm in the process of planning our migration from an internal hosted POP3-server (dovecot) to Exchange 2010. We're using Outlook 2003 for the moment, but will soon upgrade to Outlook 2010. The big problem is that we have about 50 computers here in our HQ, plus ~30 clients in branch offices (wich will get their Exchange migration later sometime). I'm the only IT personel, and having to go around and manually set up Outlook and copy over their PST contents is not a option I'm looking for. Some users have set outlook to keep messages for X number of days on the POP3 server, others have not. Using a POP3 connector to transfer over the mails is not a viable option. Here is what I've done so far: Created a transform for the Office 2003 administrative installation point Created a .PRF file to modify any existing e-mail account to switch over to Exchange (including the RPC-encrypt hotfix described in MSKB 2006508) Tested both transform and PRF, both works Created a test-OU and GPO containing the Office 2003 installation with transform applied, also works My big question is: How can I force Outlook to import any existing .PST into the new Exchange mailbox when the user starts up Outlook for the first time after the MST/PRF have been applied? Is this possible?

• Allowing Sharepoint to relay email through Exchange

  I have written a Sharepoint 2007 web part that sends a field from a form to a specified email address. I have got the form working as I require, but at present it can only send to internal email addresses. Sharepoint's email functions use SMTP to send to our Exchange 2003 server, but because our Exchange server is configured to prevent relaying, if the To: address is not at a local domain, it won't deliver the mail. I don't want to open up our Exchange server to be a completely open relay. What I want is to allow my Sharepoint servers to send mail to addresses outside our domain. The following seem possible: Allow all mail sent from one of the Sharepoint servers to be relayed Allow all mail from a web application pool account to be relayed (I am not sure that the application pool authenticates to the SMTP server though) A combination of the two Can anyone advise on the best way of doing this? Is setting up a dedicated SMTP server on the Exchange server (not a separate physical server) the right way of going about this? EDIT: Note this is for Exchange 2003. There is a post on setting this up in Exchange 2007 which appears to have recognised the frequent requirement to do what I need. It doesn't give much detail on 2003 though. Can anyone expand?

• Stream Media from Windows 7 to XP with VLC Media Player

  So you’ve got yourself a new computer with Windows 7 and you’re itching to take advantage of it’s ability to stream media across your home network. But, the rest of the family is still on Windows XP and you’re not quite ready to shell out the cash for the upgrades. Well, today we’ll show you how to easily stream media from Windows 7 to Windows XP with VLC Media Player. On the host computer running Windows 7, you’ll need to have an account set up with both a username and password. A blank password will not work. The media files will need to be located in a shared folder. Note: If the media files are located within the Public directory, or within the profile of the user account you use to log into the Windows 7 computer, they will be shared automatically. Sharing your Media Folders On your Windows 7 computer, right-click on the folder containing the files you’d like to stream and choose Properties.     On the Sharing Tab of the folder properties, click the Share button. Click OK.   Type or select from the drop down the user account you’ll use to log in, or select “Everyone” to share with all users. Then click Add. You may change the permission level, but only Read permission is required to play the media. Repeat this process for any additional folders you wish to share.    The Windows XP Client Computer Now that we’ve shared our media folders from the Windows 7 computer, we’re ready to play our files on the Windows XP computer. Download and install the VLC Media Player. (See link below) Then open VLC. Click on Media from the and select Open File… Browse your network for the shared folder that contains your media.   You’ll be prompted to log in to the host computer. Provide the credentials for a user on the Windows 7 computer. Click OK.   Select your media file and click Open.    Your media playback will begin momentarily.   This is a nice and easy way to stream media across your home network without upgrading multiple computers to Windows 7.  Plus, VLC is certainly no slouch as a Media Player. If you are tired of looking at the default wallpaper, then join us today as we look at changing it with Oceanis Change Background Windows 7. Special Notes This information is quoted directly from the website and needs to be kept in mind when using Oceanis Change Background Windows 7: If the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program no longer works properly after installing some Windows Updates, then uninstall and reinstall the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program to have it run properly again. If you ever do an in-place upgrade to another higher level edition of Windows 7 in the future, then be sure to uninstall this Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program first to avoid incompatibility issues with it in the new edition of Windows 7. It was designed to only work in Windows 7 Starter edition. Before There it is…the default wallpaper everyone with the Starter Edition gets stuck with. • Change the User Interface Language in Vista or Windows 7

  Would you like to change the user interface language in any edition of Windows 7 or Vista on your computer?  Here’s a free app that can help you do this quickly and easily. If your native language is not the one most spoken in your area, you’ve likely purchased a PC with Windows preinstalled with a language that is difficult or impossible for you to use.  Windows 7 and Vista Ultimate include the ability to install multiple user interface languages and switch between them. However, all other editions are stuck with the language they shipped with.  With the free Vistalizator app, you can add several different interface languages to any edition of Vista or Windows 7 and easily switch between them. Note:  In this test, we used an US English copy of both Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Vista Home Premium, and it works the same on any edition. The built-in language switching in the Ultimate Editions lets you set a user interface language for each user account, but this will only switch it for all users.  Add a User Interface Language to Windows To add an interface language to any edition of Windows 7 and Vista, first download Vistalizator (link below).  Then, from the same page, download the language pack of your choice.  The language packs are specific for each service pack of Windows, so make sure to choose the correct version and service pack you have installed. Once the downloads are finished, launch the Vistalizator program. You do not need to install it; simply run it and you’re ready to go.  Click the Add languages button to add a language to Windows. Select the user interface language pack you downloaded, and click Open. Depending on the language you selected, it may not automatically update with Windows Update when a service pack is released.  If so, you will have to remove the language pack and reinstall the new one for that service pack at that time.  Click Ok to continue. Make sure you’ve selected the correct language, and click Install language. Vistalizator will extract and install the language pack.  This took around 5 to 10 minutes in our test. Once the language pack is installed, click Yes to make it the default display language. Now, you have two languages installed in Windows.  You may be prompted to check for updates to the language pack; if so, click Update languages and Vistalizator will automatically check for and install any updates. When finished, exit Vistalizator to finish switching the language.  Click Yes to automatically reboot and apply the changes. When you computer reboots, it will show your new language, which in our test is Thai.  Here’s our Windows 7 Home Premium machine with the Thai language pack installed and running. You can even add a right to left language, such as Arabic, to Windows.  Simply repeat the steps to add another language pack.    Vistalizator was originally designed for Windows Vista, and works great with Windows 7 too.  The language packs for Vista are larger downloads than their Windows 7 counterparts.  Here’s our Vista Home Premium in English… And here’s how it looks after installing the Simplified Chinese language pack with Vistalizator. Revert to Your Original Language If you wish to return to the language that your computer shipped with, or want to switch to another language you’ve installed, run Vistalizator again.  Select the language you wish to use, and click Change language.   When you close Vistalizator, you will again be asked to reboot.  Once you’ve rebooted, you’ll see your new (or original) language ready to use.  Here’s our Windows 7 Home Premium desktop, back in it’s original English interface. CAML it’s a markup language like html that allows developers to do queries against SharePoint lists, it’s syntax is very easy to understand and it allows to add logical conditions like Where, Contains, And, Or, etc, just like a SQL Query. For one of our projects we have the need to do a filter on SharePoint views, the problem here is that the view it’s a list containing a CAML Query with the filters the view may have, so in order to filter the view that’s already been filtered before, we need to append our filters to the existing CAML Query. That’s not a trivial task because the where statement in a CAML Query it’s like this: <Where>   <And>     <Filter1 />     <Filter2 />   </And> </Where> If we want to add a new logical operator, like an OR it’s not just as simple as to append the OR expression like the following example: <Where>   <And>     <Filter1 />     <Filter2 />   </And>   <Or>     <Filter3 />   </Or> </Where> But instead the correct query would be: <Where>   <Or>     <And>       <Filter1 />       <Filter2 />     </And>     <Filter3 />   </Or> </Where> Notice that the <Filter# /> tags are for explanation purpose only. In order to solve this problem we created a simple component, it has a method that receives the current query (could be an empty query also) and appends the expression you want to that query. Example: string currentQuery = @“ <Where>    <And>     <Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>A</Value></Contains>     <Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>B</Value></Contains>   </And> </Where>”; currentQuery = CAMLQueryBuilder.AppendQuery(     currentQuery,     “<Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>C</Value></Contains>”,     CAMLQueryBuilder.Operators.Or); The fist parameter this function receives it’s the actual query, the second it’s the filter you want to add, and the third it’s the logical operator, so basically in this query we want all the items that the title contains: the character A and B or the ones that contains the character C. The result query is: <Where>   <Or>      <And>       <Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>A</Value></Contains>       <Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>B</Value></Contains>     </And>     <Contains><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>C</Value></Contains>   </Or> </Where>             The code:   First of all we have an enumerator inside the CAMLQueryBuilder class that has the two possible Options And, Or. public enum Operators { And, Or }   Then we have the main method that’s the one that performs the append of the filters. public static string AppendQuery(string containerQuery, string logicalExpression, Operators logicalOperator){   In this method the first we do is create a new XmlDocument and wrap the current query (that may be empty) with a “<Query></Query>” tag, because the query that comes with the view doesn’t have a root element and the XmlDocument must be a well formatted xml.   XmlDocument queryDoc = new XmlDocument(); queryDoc.LoadXml("<Query>" + containerQuery + "</Query>");   The next step is to create a new XmlDocument containing the logical expression that has the filter needed.   XmlDocument logicalExpressionDoc = new XmlDocument(); logicalExpressionDoc.LoadXml("<root>" + logicalExpression + "</root>"); In these next four lines we extract the expression from the recently created XmlDocument and create an XmlElement.                  XmlElement expressionElTemp = (XmlElement)logicalExpressionDoc.SelectSingleNode("/root/*"); XmlElement expressionEl = queryDoc.CreateElement(expressionElTemp.Name); expressionEl.InnerXml = expressionElTemp.InnerXml;   Below are the main steps in the component logic. • Install Ubuntu and erase Windows Vista

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

• Weird caching bug where old version of the same web page (same filename) is still called (Windows 2008 R2, Tomcat 5.5)

  This is definitely one of the strangest errors I've seen and it occurs intermittently. I am running Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7.5, and Apache Tomcat 5.5, by the way. Let's say I have two machines, A and B. Both A and B are running Windows 2008 R2. I have a web page called login.jsp on machine A, and I have a newer, modified version of login.jsp on machine B . Now, I copy the new login.jsp from machine B and paste it to machine A, replacing the older version with the same filename. For whatever reason, when I hit up the web page in my browser from a local machine (i.e. my laptop), it still recalls the old version of the web page, even though it's been replaced! I tried restarting IIS and Apache Tomcat. That didn't work. I tried restarting machine A and that didn't work. I tried a cold reboot of my local machine and that didn't work, either. So, I spoke to someone I can confide in for help. He said to open the login.jsp page in notepad, put a space in, save the file, and try again. Sure enough, it worked. He said he hasn't seen it in Windows 2003, but this is occurring with Windows 2008. What I don't understand is why did it work and what the heck is this error and I do I really diagnose it and resolve it for good, instead of the hack my colleague proposed? Is this bug related to Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Tomcat, or something else entirely? Anyone else have the same problem? Thank you for any help.
