• ASP.NET - dynamically creating database connection in datasets

  I am currently using datasets for my data access layer. I currently store the connection string in the web.config file. I need the ability to change the connection to another database before any queries are processed. Is there an event that is triggered or a base class that can be modified that intercepts the process of retrieving the connection string from the web.config file? Is there any way to handle multiple database connections using the same code base and also take advantage of the connection pooling? I understand the best method is to get rid of datasets and use custom data objects. Any ideas?

• C# How to Present Such Question?

  greetings! i have a C# game program that im developing. it uses sound samples and winsock. when i test run the game most of the audio works fine but from time to time if it is multiple samples being played sequentially the application form shakes a little bit and then goes back to its old position. how do i go about debugging this or present it to you folks in a manageable manner? im sure no one is going to want the whole app code in fear of virus attacks. please guide me.. thanking you. EDIT: i have not been able to pin down any code section that produces this result. it just does and i cannot explain it. EDIT: no the x/y position are not changing. the window like shakes around a few pixels and then goes back to the position were it was before the shake.

  Today I was bitten again by "Mutable default arguments" after many years. I usually don't use mutable default arguments unless needed but I think with time I forgot about that, and today in the application I added tocElements=[] in a pdf generation function's argument list and now 'Table of Content' gets longer and longer after each invocation of "generate pdf" :) My question is what other things should I add to my list of things to MUST avoid? Mutable default arguments Import modules always same way e.g. from y import x and import x are different things, they are treated as different modules. Do not use range in place of lists because range() will become an iterator anyway, the following will fail: myIndexList = [0,1,3] isListSorted = myIndexList == range(3) # will fail in 3.0 isListSorted = myIndexList == list(range(3)) # will not same thing can be mistakenly done with xrange: `myIndexList == xrange(3)`. • Red Gate in the Community

  Much has been said recently about Red Gate's community involvement and commitment to the DotNet community. Much of this has been unduly negative. Before you start throwing stones and spewing obscenities, consider some additional facts: Red Gate's software is actually very good. I have worked on many projects where Red Gate's software was instrumental in finishing successfully. Red Gate is VERY good to the community. I have spoken at many user groups and code camps where Red Gate has been a sponsor. Red Gate consistently offers up money to pay for the venue or food, and they will often give away licenses as door prizes. There are many such community events that would not take place without Red Gate's support. All I have ever seen them ask for is to have their products mentioned or be listed as a sponsor. They don't insist on anyone following a specific script. They don't monitor how their products are showcased. They let their products speak for themselves. Red Gate sponsors the Simple Talk web site. I publish there regularly. Red Gate has never exerted editorial pressure on me. No one has ever told me we can't publish this unless you mention Red Gate products. No one has ever said, you need to say nice things about Red Gate products in order to be published. They have told me, "you need to make this less academic, so you don't alienate too many readers. "You need to actually write an introduction so people will know what you are talking about". "You need to write this so that someone who isn't a reflection nut will follow what you are trying to say." In short, they have been good editors worried about the quality of the content and what the readers are likely to be interested in. For me personally, Red Gate and Simple Talk have both been excellent to work with. As for the developer outrage… I am a little embarrassed by so much of the response that I am seeing. So much of the complaints remind me of little children whining "but you promised" Semantics aside. A promise is just a promise. It's not like they "pinky sweared". Sadly no amount name calling or "double dog daring" will change the economics of the situation. Red Gate is not a multibillion dollar corporation. They are a mid size company doing the best they can. Without a doubt, their pockets are not as deep as Microsoft's. I honestly believe that they did try to make the "freemium" model work. Sadly it did not. I have no doubt that they intended for it to work and that they tried to make it work. I also have no doubt that they labored over making this decision. This could not have been an easy decision to make. Many people are gleefully proclaiming a massive backlash against Red Gate swearing off their wonderful products and promising to bash them at every opportunity from now on. This is childish behavior that does not represent professionals. This type of behavior is more in line with bullies in the school yard than professionals in a professional community. Now for my own prediction… This back lash against Red Gate is not likely to last very long. We will all realize that we still need their products. We may look around for alternatives, but realize that they really do have the best in class for every product that they produce, and that they really are not exorbitantly priced. We will see them sponsoring Code Camps and User Groups and be reminded, "hey this isn't such a bad company". On the other hand, software shops like Red Gate, will remember this back lash and give a second thought to supporting open source projects. They will worry about getting involved when an individual wants to turn over control for a product that they developed but can no longer support alone. Who wants to run the risk of not being able to follow through on their best intentions. In the end we may all suffer, even the toddlers among us throwing the temper tantrum, "BUT YOU PROMISED!" Disclaimer Before anyone asks or jumps to conclusions, I do not get paid by Red Gate to say any of this. I have often written about their products, and I have long thought that they are a wonderful company with amazing products. If they ever open an office in the SE United States, I will be one of the first to apply.

  ...before the pagination chunks have been determined. I know you can do this in multiple statements, but there must be a better way. my results are returned ordered by date and I want to return the pagination chunk that contains a given id. So I could, for example, select the date of the given id and then select a chunk of results where date is less than or greater than the date. That would work. But is there some native mysql method of doing this sort of thing in one statement? It just seems reasonable to expect that we could ask for X results in which a given id exists if results are ordered by date.

• post commit hook fail

  I have Master/Slave setup using Win2k8R with SVN 1.6.9 and using TortoiseSVN 1.6.7. The access is through Apache and using http. Everything works but when I commit I get the following message: Error: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with output: Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. This happen when using multiple TortoiseSVN dialog for committing the files in rapid succession. If I use one TortoiseSVN dialog and wait till the commit reply is back then I won't see the problem. In other words, committing one at the time cause no issue. The post-commit script output is logged. Even though I get the above error but when I check the Master and Slave repository the files have been replicated okay with no issue. I am wondering how this issue can be solved.

  I'm working on a project to develop a cross-browser testing web app. Simply put, I'm tired of having to maintain multiple browsers on the same system and IE in VMware solely for the purpose of testing. Does anyone know if there is any way to change the render kit programmatically? For example, if I insert a URL, I would be able to load the URL and switch the browser render within a frame of some assortment. I am experienced with PHP, JS, and RoR if there is a solution using any of those. Thank you! John

  Hi, I have a HTML file which contains the following: <img src="MATCH1" bla="blabla"> <something:else bla="blabla" bla="bla"><something:else2 something="something"> <something image="MATCH2" bla="abc"> Now I need a regex to match both MATCH1 and MATCH2 Also the HTML contains multiple parts like this, so it can be in the HTML 1, 2, 3 of x times.. When I say: <img\s*src="(.*?)".*?<something\s*image="(.*?)" It doesn't match it. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

  Hi all, Using DBI::DatabaseHandle#execute or DBI::DatabaseHandle#prepare it's not possible to run an sql script (with mutiple sql statments).   I feel very very very silly posting this, but I can't find the answer. I've searched google and here. // originally values in a multi dimensional array, but used simple values // to rule out errors. $somenumber = 1; $anotherone=5; if ($somenumber < $res->shares < $anotherone ) { blah } Get the error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' Seems pretty simple and straight forward. Is there some weird thing that you can't compare multiple values? Do I have to explicitly type? It works in Perl. Which of course means that it has to work like this in everything else. ;)

  I'm implementing a prototype of a RESTful API using ASP.NET MVC and apart from the odd bug here and there I've achieve all the requirements I set out at the start, apart from callers being able to use the X-HTTP-Method-Override custom header to override the HTTP method. What I'd like is that the following request... GET /someresource/123 HTTP/1.1 X-HTTP-Method-Override: DELETE ...would be dispatched to my controller method that implements the DELETE functionality rather than the GET functionality for that action (assuming that there are multiple methods implementing the action, and that they are marked with different [AcceptVerbs] attributes). So, given the following two methods, I would like the above request to be dispatched to the second one: [ActionName("someresource")] [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Get)] public ActionResult GetSomeResource(int id) { /* ... */ } [ActionName("someresource")] [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Delete)] public ActionResult DeleteSomeResource(int id) { /* ... */ } Does anybody know if this is possible? • Javascript string to Date conversion - simple?

  Hi all, Yesterday I managed to solve this, then lost a day's work due to the death of a HD. Now I cannot remember what I did to fix it, but I know it can be done. Input: string date in the format 'm/d/yy', eg '12/25/10', or '4/1/10' (1st April) Output - Date object I'm working with date.js and date.format.js so have Date.fromString() and Date.format() avaiable. But trying multiple combinations is not giving me what I need. IF the date were 'mm/dd/yy' then it's simple. But I'm using jquery.datepicker.js which outputs in 'm/d/yy' and I don't want to change this much I know this conversion can be done. After a 22 hour day... I need help. Thanks. Mark...

  Hello, I have a solution with multiple projects - executable, library, and others(unimportant right now). Library contains EF entity classes and executable uses them. When I'm working on some code from the executable then every entity that I use is marked as an error and compiler says that I should check usings and references. Reference in the executable project is set to library project(not the dll itself). When I build the library project then everything gets back to normal, but when I start typing then it happens again. I could live with it, but intelli sense isn't working and that is quite a disadvantage. Any ideas?

  I have a method whose callers require different datatypes. I could repeat the requisite conversions a dozen times by putting them in each of the callers, but it seems much more efficient to do it once in the called method. public String myMethod(String myArg) { return DoSomething(myArg); } public Int32 myMethod(String myArg) { return Convert.ToInt32(DoSomething(myArg)); } private String DoSomething(key) { return SomeList[key]; } If I have multiple methods that pull data from SomeList and have to utilize different data types then in each I have to do a type conversion. Examples might be session variables or query or form requests or any other number of things. • What event do I need to supress to stop IE from "Dinging" when I press enter in a text box?

  On simple forms with one text box pressing enter submits the form (and this is great for easy search forms) However on a form with multiple fields, pressing Enter in an input="text" box won't do anything (e.g. submit) but in IE it "Dings" as if you have tried to delete an undeletable object. The question is... what event do I need to suppress in IE to stop this sound? e.g. if I have a username/password form, I DO want the enter key to submit the form, but I certainly don't want the "error" sound.   Hi all, I am writing an app, which needs to take the screen shots automatically (just like pressing PrintScreen button). So please suggest me how to get this done. A raw 24 bit BMP image would suffice. PLEASE NOTE: My app is in C, so any win32 APIs that can be called from my code is what I am looking for. (Sometimes back I had got an example code from codeproject which used to get the screen shots but the mouse pointer user to blink when the screen shot is taken.   I'm just taking a look at CoffeeScript for the first time so bare with me if this is a dumb question. I'm familiar with the hidden pattern methodology however I'm still wrapping my head around object prototypes. I'm trying to create a basic class for controlling a section on my site. The problem I'm running into is losing defined class variables within a different scope. For example, the code below works fine and creates the properties within the object perfectly. However when I jump into a jQuery callback I lose all knowledge of the class variables storing some of the jQuery objects for multiple uses.
